The j.int European Space Agency.and Chinese Academy.of Sciences Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)mission will explore global dy.amics of the magnetosphere under vary.ng solar wind and interplanetary.magnetic field conditions,and simultaneously.monitor the auroral response of the Northern Hemisphere *** these large-scale responses with medium and fine-scale measurements at a variety.of cadences by.additional ground-based and space-based instruments will enable a much greater scientific impact bey.nd the original goals of the SMILE ***,we describe current community.efforts to prepare for SMILE,and the benefits and context various experiments that have explicitly.expressed support for SMILE can offer.A dedicated group of international scientists representing many.different experiment ty.es and geographical locations,the Ground-based and Additional Science Working Group,is facilitating these *** include constructing an online SMILE Data Fusion Facility.the discussion of particular or special modes for experiments such as coherent and incoherent scatter radar,and the consideration of particular observing strategies and spacecraft *** anticipate growing interest and community.engagement with the SMILE mission,and we welcome novel ideas and insights from the solar-terrestrial community.

Encroachment drives facilitation at alpine shrublines

Ongoing encroachment is driving recent alpine shrubline dy.amics globally.but the role of shrub-shrub interactions in shaping shrublines and their relationships with stem density.changes remain poorly.***,the size and age of shrubs from 26 Salix shrubline populations along a 900-km latitudinal gradient(30°-38°N)were measured and mapped across the eastern Tibetan *** pattern analy.es were used to quantify.the spatial distribution patterns of j.veniles and adults,and to assess spatial associations between *** intensity.of univariate and bivariate spatial patterns was related to biotic and abiotic *** mark correlation functions with a quantitative mark(shrub height,basal stem diameter,crown width)were also employ.d to investigate the spatial relationships between shrub traits of j.veniles and *** equation models were used to explore the relationships among conspecific interactions,patterns,shrub traits and recruitment dy.amics under climate *** shrublines showed clustered patterns,suggesting the existence of conspecific *** patterns of j.veniles and conspecific interactions(potentially.facilitation)tended to intensify.with increasing soil moisture *** warming before 2010 triggered positive effects on population interactions and spatial patterns via increased shrub ***,summer warming after2010 triggered negative effects on interactions through reduced shrub ***,shrub recruitment shifts under rapid climate change could impact spatial patterns,alter conspecific interactions and modify.the direction and degree of shrublines responses to *** changes would have profound implications for the stability.of alpine woody.ecosy.tems.

In this paper,lay.red periodic foundations(LPFs)are numerically.examined for their responses to longitudinal and transverse modes in the time and frequency.*** different unit-cells,i.e.,2-lay.r,4-lay.r,and 6-lay.r unit-cells,comprising concrete/rubber,concrete/rubber/steel/rubber,and concrete/rubber/steel/rubber/lead/rubber materials,respectively.are taken into ***,the viscoelasticity.behavior of the rubber is modeled with two factors,i.e.,a frequency.independent(FI)loss factor and a linear frequency.dependent(FD)loss *** the extraction of the complex dispersion curves and the identification of the band gaps(BGs),the simulations of wave transmission in the time and frequency.domains are performed using the COMSOL *** parametric studies evaluate the effects of the rubber viscoelasticity.models on the dispersion curves and the wave transmission for the longitudinal and transverse *** results show that considering the rubber viscoelasticity.enhances the wave attenuation ***,the transverse-mode damping is more sensitive to the viscoelasticity.model than its longitudinal *** 6-lay.r unit-cell LPF exhibits the lowest BG,ranging from 4.8 Hz to 6.5 Hz.

An acute loss of smell emerged as a striking sy.ptom present in roughly.half of the people infected with the severe acute respiratory.sy.drome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)virus in the early.phases of the COVID-19 *** most COVID-19 patients,olfaction recovers over the course of a few ***,a lasting partial or complete loss of smell,often associated with distorted olfactory.perceptions termed parosmia,has emerged as a widespread problem impacting at least 5%-10%of those who experience anosmia due to *** inability.to offer effective therapies to this hy.osmic or anosmic population,comprising millions of patients,highlights an enormous unmet need for the medical ***,we summarize the current understanding of the pathobiology.causing acute olfactory.loss due to SARS-CoV-2 infection,focusing on how the virus interacts with the peripheral olfactory.sy.tem,a maj.r site of viral *** also explore the problem of long-COVID olfactory.dy.function,which may.accompany.other persistent sy.temic disorders collectively.termed postacute sequelae of ***,we discuss an emerging model focused on unresolved immune cell activity.driving ongoing ***,we review current and future therapeutic approaches aimed at restoring olfactory.function.

Though silanization of aluminum powder is currently.used to improve its flow properties,for use as an alternative fuel source,there are a wide range of experimental parameters for the process and not all of them have been thoroughly.*** this is complete,it is unknown if the process is optimized in terms of time,efficiency.and ***,we report on a study.into the effects of changes in humidity.degree of agitation,reaction temperature,and curing time upon the deposition of pheny. triethoxy.ilane into 20μm(d50)aluminum *** confirm the deposition of the coating via diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy.and x-ray.photoelectron *** then characterize the coated particles using apparent density.measurements and Carney.flow *** analy.is of variance,we find that,of the parameters explored,only.changes in cure time and reaction temperature provide meaningful changes to the apparent density.while none of our parameters produced statistically.significant changes in Carney.flow ***,we conclude that,when optimizing silanization of aluminum particles,environmental control of humidity.is unneeded and that the reaction can be run with minimal *** ability.to largely.ignore these parameters is a benefit to large-scale processing.

Background The cry.tic nature of pink bollworm Pectinophora gossy.iella(Saunders)larvae enables its reduced vul-nerability.to insecticidal ***,the development of resistance against Bacillus thuringiensis(Bt)toxins posed a serious threat to transgenic cotton *** necessitated determining the critical timing of spray.applications on the control *** study.assessed the influence of egg age(freshly.laid ***-day.old)and the loca-tion of larvae(directly.exposed to the insecticide residues on the boll rind *** inside the bolls)on insecticide control *** The results revealed a significant decrease in the ovicidal activity.of tested insecticides with an increase in the age of eggs from one day.old to three day. old(paired t-test,Py.exposed to the insec-ticide residues on the boll rind were more susceptible(>80%mortality.than the larvae exposed after they.had bur-rowed inside the bolls(y..The inhibitory.effects of tested insecticides on developmental biology.were more pronounced in the experiment on pre-larval release insecticide treatment compared with insecticide treatment given post-larval release and entry.inside the *** Egg age influences the insecticide susceptibility.as does the larval location,directly.exposed vs bur-rowed inside the *** eggs and the larvae that had burrowed inside the green bolls of cotton were relatively.less susceptible to the insecticide *** toxic effects of insecticides on egg and larval stages were primar-ily.*** findings are significant for devising a comprehensive strategy.for pink bollworm management on a sustainable basis.

Developing a new agenda for increased food and climate security

In many.countries, political and environmental pressures are currently.combining to generate a perfect storm of circumstances that is reducing food availability. increasing food costs and thereby.reducing the availability.of food to many. The UK is currently.considering new national food and land management policies, and attention is also being given to legislation to address diet-related health issues. Many.now argue for a revolution in UK farming practices to reduce their impact on the natural environment. The UK is not alone in facing these and other challenges. Both the contribution of agriculture to greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and the effects of climate change on food production are issues receiving worldwide *** agricultural practices can result in greater C capture, reduced GHG emissions, enhanced soil quality.and enhanced biodiversity. However, it is questioned if such farming sy.tems will be productive enough to feed a growing population with the food required for social and health benefits. To fully.exploit the impact of new plant science in farmer fields, it is imperative to effectively.link science to farming practices and conduct a broader conversation around the food revolution with social scientists and with the general public.

Polio eradication surveillance in Sri Lanka,2019-2023

Obj.ctive:To evaluate the polio laboratory.surveillance carried out from j.nuary.2019 to May.2023 by.the Polio Regional Reference Laboratory.Sri ***:This retrospective study.analy.ed all stool samples received under the acute flaccid paraly.is(AFP)and immunodeficient vaccine-derived poliovirus(VDPV)surveillance at Polio Regional Reference Laboratory.Sri Lanka from j.nuary.2019 to May.*** results of the testing methodologies were extracted from the laboratory.data sy.tem,i.e.,poliovirus virus isolation,intra-ty.ic differentiation/VDPV real time reverse transcriptase poly.erase chain reaction(ITD/VDPV rRTPCR)and sequencing,along with the data on timing of reporting results,stool adequacy.and *** was analy.ed using descriptive ***:A total of 2141 stool samples from 1644 cases were received for AFP surveillance from Sri Lanka(93.61%),Maldives(1.52%),and immunodeficient VDPV(4.86%)*** polioviruses(19/1644,1.15%)and non-polio enteroviruses(73/1644,4.44%)were isolated,while Sabin-like 3 virus was detected in maj.rity.12/19,63.15%)among the poliovirus *** polioviruses or circulating VDPVs were not detected among the *** all y.ars of the study.the non-polio AFP detection rate was>1/100000 in children aged less than 15 y.ars,whereas stool adequacy.rate was>80%.All results were reported within 14 day. of receipt,ensuring timely.reporting as per global ***:The Polio Regional Reference Laboratory.Sri Lanka play. a vital role in maintaining the polio-free status in the country.through its robust laboratory.surveillance,while adhering to the surveillance ***-detection of wild polioviruses and circulating VDPV during the study.period reinforces the polio-free status in the country.
