Data I/O management approach for the post-hoc visualization of big simulation data results

Leading-edge supercomputers,such as the K computer,have generated a vast amount of simulation results,and most of these datasets were stored on the file system for the post-hoc analysis such as *** this work,we first investigated the data generation trends of the K computer by analyzing some operational log data *** verified a tendency of generating large amounts of distributed files as simulation outputs,and in most cases,the number of files has been proportional to the number of utilized computational nodes,that is,each computational node producing one or more *** that the computational cost of visualization tasks is usually much smaller than that required for large-scale numerical simulations,a flexible data input/output(I/O)management mechanism becomes highly useful for the post-hoc visualization and *** this work,we focused on the xDMlib data management library,and its flexible data I/O mechanism in order to enable flexible data loading of big computational climate simulation *** the proposed approach,a pre-processing is executed on the target distributed files for generating a light-weight metadata necessary for the elaboration of the data assignment mapping used in the subsequent data loading *** evaluated the proposed approach by using a 32-node visualization cluster,and the K *** the inevitable performance penalty associated with longer data loading time,when using smaller number of processes,there is a benefit for avoiding any data replication via copy,conversion,or *** addition,users will be able to freely select any number of nodes,without caring about the number of distributed files,for the post-hoc visualization and analysis purposes.

Modification of the Micro Arc-oxidized Ti Surface for Implant Applications

Surface treatments applied to titanium and its alloys for implant applications are important for the development of bio *** this study,first an oxide layer was formed on the surface of the titanium plate by micro arc oxidation,and then both calcium phosphate and calcium phosphate/chitosan accumulation were performed for different samples by the sol-gel ***-SEM/EDS examinations,XRD,FTIR and thermal analysis were performed for these micro arc-oxidized,calcium phosphate-coated and calcium phosphate/chitosan-coated *** surface roughnesses for these surfaces were measured between 10μm and 100μm,suitable for bone development on the *** effect of chitosan addition on the calcium phosphate-coated surface on apatite formation ability and antibacterial properties was *** the addition of chitosan slows down the formation of apatite,it ensured that the coating had antibacterial *** calcium phosphate/chitosan biocomposite obtained can be recommended for dental and orthopedic implants.

In vitro Study on Biodegradable AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Fibers Reinforced PLGA Composite

AZ31 magnesium alloy fibers reinforced poly（lactic-co-glycolic acid）（PLGA） composites were prepared and their mechanical property, immersion corrosion behavior and biocompatibility were studied. The tensile test showed that with the addition of AZ31 fibers, the composites had a significant increment in tensile strength and elongation. For the direct cell attachment test, all the cells showed a healthy morphology and spread well on the experimental sample surfaces. The immersion results indicated that pH values of the immersion medium increased with increasing AZ31 fiber contents. All the in vitro experimental results indicated that this new kind of magnesium alloy fibers reinforced PLGA composites show a potential for future biomedical applications.

Analyzing and Mining Ordered Information Tables

Work in inductive learning has mostly been concentrated on classifying. However,there are many applications in which it is desirable to order rather than to classify instances. For modelling ordering problems, we generalize the notion of information tables to ordered information tables by adding order relations in attribute values. Then we propose a data analysis model by analyzing the dependency of attributes to describe the properties of ordered information *** problem of mining ordering rules is formulated as finding association between orderings of attribute values and the overall ordering of objects. An ordering rules may state that "if the value of an object x on an attribute a is ordered ahead of the value of another object y on the same attribute, then x is ordered ahead of y". For mining ordering rules, we first transform an ordered information table into a binary information table, and then apply any standard machine learning and data mining algorithms. As an illustration, we analyze in detail Maclean's universities ranking for the year 2000.

Solid Desiccant Dehumidification Techniques Inspired from Natural Electroosmosis Phenomena

Electroosmosis has been shown to be an effective means of different applications in various fields such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems （MEMS） and biomimetics applications. This paper aims to prove the concept that the electroosmosis phenomena can also be cooperated into larger scale applications in the building service industry like dehumidification or damping proof. The electroosmotic flow inside a porous medium is validated experimentally to further understand the dehumidification mechanism of combined techniques. An experimental test validates that the condensation from the porous medium can be obtained by electroosmotic force generated by external electric field, especially for specific desiccant powders like zeolite and diatomaceous earth. With a range of volts from 5 V to 20 V applying between the testing plates, the maximum flow rate through the cross section in the testing plate achieved during the peak period is 1.35 laL＇min 1. These promising phenomena can act as an alternative way for energy choice in dehumidification industrial field. Further researches on new regeneration methods for solid desiccant dehumidification are required to make the system simple, energy-saving and suitable for small air conditioning units.

Friction stir spot welding of SPCC low carbon steel plates at extremely low welding temperature

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) was applied to 2.0 mm thick steel plate cold-rolled commercial (SPCC) low carbon steel plates at a very low rotation speed that ranged from 5 to 50rpm, which was much lower than that generally used for the conventional FSSW technique. Due to the very low heat input, the welding processes could therefore be completed at a peak welding temperature below 160℃. As a result, a significantly refined microstructure with an average grain size of about 0.41μm was formed in the stir zone of the joints and the JI {0-11 } and J2{1-1O} shear textures were the dominant components, which are different from the D1{11-2} and D2{-1-12} shear textures formed in the conventional FSSW joints. In addition, no heat affected zone could be detected along the crosssectional plane of the joints. Although a few void-like non-bonded areas were still observed along the interface between the upper and lower steel plates, the shear tensile loads of the joints increased to about 10.0 kN when welded at a condition of 8t, 20rpm and 30 s, and the joints fractured through the plug failure mode.

Active elastic metamaterials for subwavelength wave propagation control

Recent research activities in elastic metamaterials demonstrate a significant potential for subwavelength wave propagation control owing to their interior locally resonant mechanism. The growing technological developments in electro/magnetomechanical couplings of smart materials have introduced a controlling degree of freedom for passive elastic metamaterials. Active elastic metamaterials could allow for a fine control of material physical behavior and thereby induce new functional properties that cannot be produced by passive approaches. In this paper, two types of active elastic metamaterials with shunted piezoelectric materials and electrorheological elastomers are proposed. Theoretical analyses and numerical validations of the active elastic metamaterials with detailed microstructures are pre- sented for designing adaptive applications in band gap structures and extraordinary waveguides. The active elastic metamaterial could provide a new design methodology for adaptive wave filters, high signal-to-noise sensors, and structural health monitoring applications.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of TiAl/TiAl joints brazed with a newly developed Ti–Ni–Nb–Zr quaternary filler alloy

A novel Ti-Ni-Nb-Zr quaternary filler alloy with the composition of Ti-(19～25)Ni-(15～25)(Nb+Zr)(wt.%) was *** filler alloy was composed of(Ti,Nb)ss,(Ti,Zr,Nb)ss+(Ti,Zr)2Ni,α-Ti and Ti2Ni *** was fabricated into filler foil with a thickness of about 45 μm by a rapid solidification *** results indicate that the liquidus temperature of the Ti-Ni-Nb-Zr brazing alloy was about 978℃,and the brazing alloy presented excellent wettability on TiAl *** TiAl joint mainly consisted of β/B2 phase,Ti2Al,Ti2AlNi and α2-Ti3Al *** diffusion of Al atom from base metal to brazed seam led to the formation of Ti2Al and *** that no previously references on XRD pattern of Ti2AlNi compound can be found,Ti2AlNi cast alloy specimen was specially prepared and XRD peaks were specially *** micro-hardness and bending strength tests of the Ti2AlNi phase were carried out,and the results were 761 HV and 192 MPa,*** brazing parameters of 1010 ℃/10 min offered the joint shear strength of 280 MPa at room temperature,and the joints exhibited tensile strength of 372 MPa at room temperature and 340 MPa at 750 ℃,indicating that the newly developed filler alloy could offer a stable high-temperature strength.

Bone metastasis from early gastric cancer following non-curative endoscopic submucosal dissection

A 67-year-old male underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)to treat early gastric cancer(EGC)in *** lesion(50 mm × 25 mm diameter)was histologically diagnosed as poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma,with an ulcer *** the tumor was confined to the mucosa with no evidence of lymphovascular involvement,the ESD was regarded as a noncurative resection due to the histological type,tumor size,and existence of an ulcer finding(as indicated by the 2010 Japanese gastric cancer treatment guidelines,ver.3).Despite strong recommendation for subsequent gastrectomy,the patient refused *** alternative follow-up routine was designed,which included five years of biannual clinical examinations to detect and measure serum tumor markers and perform visual assessment of recurrence by endoscopy and computed tomography scan after which the examinations were performed *** patient's condition remained stable for eight years,until a complaint of back pain in 2010 prompted further clinical *** scintigraphy indicated increased *** examination of biopsy specimens taken from the lumbar spine revealed adenocarcinoma resembling the carcinoma cells from the EGC that had been treated previously by ESD,and which was consistent with immunohistochemical findings of gastrointestinal tract ***,the diagnosis of bone metastasis from EGC was *** reported rates of EGC recurrence in surgically resected cases range 1.4%-3.4%,but among these bone metastasis is very *** our knowledge,this is the first reported case of bone metastasis from EGC following a non-curative ESD and occurring after an eight-year disease-free interval.

Reduction of structural response to near fault earthquakes by seismic isolation columns and variable friction dampers

This paper focuses on the investigation of a hybrid seismic isolation system with passive variable friction dampers for protection of structures against near fault earthquakes. The seismic isolation can be implemented by replacing the conventional columns fixed to the foundations by seismic isolating ones. These columns allow horizontal displacement between the superstructure and the foundations and decouple the building from the damaging earthquake motion. As a result, the forces in the structural elements decrease and damage that may be caused to the building by the earthquake significantly decreases. However, this positive effect is achieved on account of displacements occurring in the isolating columns. These displacements become very large when the structure is subjected to a strong earthquake. In this case, impact may occur between the parts of the isolating column yielding their damage or collapse. In order to limit the displacements in the isolating columns, it is proposed to add variable friction dampers. A method for selecting the dampers＇ properties is proposed. It is carried out using an artificial ground motion record and optimal active control algorithm. Numerical simulation of a sevenstory structure shows that the proposed method allows efficient reduction in structural response and limits the displacements at the seismic isolating columns.
