Stripe rust （yellow rust）, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici （Pst）, is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat throughout the world. H9020-1-6-8-3 is a translocation line originally developed from interspeciifc hybridization between wheat line 7182 and Psathyrostachys huashanica Keng and is resistant to most Pst races in China. To identify the resistance gene（s） in the translocation line, H9020-1-6-8-3 was crossed with susceptible cultivar Mingxian 169, and seedlings of the parents, F1, F2, F3, and BC1 generations were tested with prevalent Chinese Pst race CYR32 under controlled greenhouse conditions. The results indicated that there is a single dominant gene, temporarily designated as YrH9020a, conferring resistance to CYR32. The resistance gene was mapped by the F2 population from Mingxian 169/H9020-1-6-8-3. It was linked to six microsatellite markers, including Xbarc196, Xbarc202, Xbarc96, Xgpw4372, Xbarc21, and Xgdm141, lfanked by Xbarc96 and Xbarc202 with at 4.5 and 8.3 cM, respectively. Based on the chromosomal locations of these markers and the test of Chinese Spring （CS） nullitetrasomic and ditelosomic lines, the gene was assigned to chromosome 6D. According to the origin and the chromosomal location, YrH9020a might be a new resistance gene to stripe rust. The lfanking markers linked to YrH9020a could be useful for marker-assisted selection in breeding programs.

Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Coo.13Mn0.54]O2 cathode materials were synthesized by carbonate-based co-precipitation method, and then, its surface was coated by thin layers of FePO4. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, field emission scanning electron micro- scope （FESEM）, energy-dispersive spectroscopy （EDS）, and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. The XRD and TEM results suggest that both the pristine and the coated materials have a hexagonal layered structure, and the FePO4 coating layer does not make any major change in the crystal structure. The FePO4-coated sample exhibits both improved initial discharge capacity and columbic efficiency compared to the pristine one. More significantly, the FePO4 coating layer has a much positive influence on the cycling perfor- mance. The FePO4-coated sample exhibits capacity reten- tion of 82 % after 100 cycles at 0.5℃ between 2.0 and 4.8 V, while only 28 % for the pristine one at the same charge-discharge condition. The electrochemical impe- dance spectroscopy （EIS） results indicate that this improved cycling performance could be ascribed to the presence of FePO4 on the surface of Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mno.54102 par- ticle, which helps to protect the cathode from chemical attacks by HF and thus suppresses the large increase in charge transfer resistance.

BACKGROUND Previous studies have indicated bidirectional associations between urate levels and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),including ulcerative colitis(UC)and Crohn’s disease(CD).However,it remains unclear whether the observations are causal because of confounding factors.AIM To investigate the causal associations between urate levels and IBD using bidirec-tional Mendelian randomization(MR).METHODS Independent genetic variants for urate levels and IBD were selected as instru-mental variables from published genome-wide association studies(GWASs).Summary statistics for instrument-outcome associations were retrieved from three separate databases for IBD(the UK Biobank,the FinnGen database and a large GWAS meta-analysis)and one for urate levels(a large GWAS meta-analysis).MR analyses included the inverse-variance-weighted method,weighted-median estimator,MR-Egger and sensitivity analyses(MR-PRESSO).A meta-analysis was also conducted to merge the data from separate outcome databases using a fixed-effects model.RESULTS Genetically higher serum urate levels were strongly associated with an increased risk of UC[odds ratio(OR):1.95,95%confidence interval(CI):1.86-2.05]after outlier correction,and the ORs(95%CIs)for IBD and CD were 0.94(95%CI:0.86-1.03)and 0.91(95%CI:0.80-1.04),respectively.Animal studies have confirmed the positive association between urate levels and UC.Moreover,genetically predicted IBD was inversely related to urate levels(OR:0.97,95%CI:0.94-0.99).However,no association was observed between genetically influenced UC or CD and urate levels.CONCLUSION Urate levels might be risk factors for UC,whereas genetically predicted IBD was inversely associated with urate levels.These findings provide essential new insight for treating and preventing IBD.

Vegetation restoration and reconstruction are effective approaches to desertification control and achieving social and economic sustainability in desert areas.However,the self-succession ability of native plants during the later periods of vegetation restoration remains unclear.Therefore,this study was conducted to bridge the knowledge gap by investigating the regeneration dynamics of artificial forest under natural conditions.The information of seed rain and soil seed bank was collected and quantified from an artificial Caragana korshinskii Kom.forest in the Tengger Desert,China.The germination tests were conducted in a laboratory setting.The analysis of species quantity and diversity in seed rain and soil seed bank was conducted to assess the impact of different durations of sand fixation(60,40,and 20 a)on the progress of vegetation restoration and ecological conditions in artificial C.korshinskii forest.The results showed that the top three dominant plant species in seed rain were Echinops gmelinii Turcz.,Eragrostis minor Host.,and Agropyron mongolicum Keng.,and the top three dominant plant species in soil seed bank were E.minor,Chloris virgata Sw.,and E.gmelinii.As restoration period increased,the density of seed rain and soil seed bank increased first and then decreased.While for species richness,as restoration period increased,it gradually increased in seed rain but decreased in soil seed bank.There was a positive correlation between seed rain density and soil seed bank density among all the three restoration periods.The species similarity between seed rain or soil seed bank and aboveground vegetation decreased with the extension of restoration period.The shape of the seeds,specifically those with external appendages such as spines and crown hair,clearly had an effect on their dispersal,then resulting in lower seed density in soil seed bank.In addition,precipitation was a crucial factor in promoting rapid germination,also resulting in lower seed density in soil seed bank.Our findings provide valuable insigh

To the Editor:Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease.It is the 8th most prevalent disease in the world.Among adolescents,more than 85%once suffered from acne.[1]Moreover,according to the recent evidence,[2]patients often experience great physical and mental stress especially among the college students,due to its recurrence and scars or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation left after healing.In China,while there are many studies on acne among adolecents and young adults,most of them are hospital-based.Substantial selection bias may be introduced in these studies because patients with severer symptoms or signs of disease are more likely to seek medical care,and perceive more impaired quality of life.The epidemiologic data from population-based studies in China are still lacking.Our study aims to estimate the prevalence of moderate and severe acne in Chinese college students and assess its impact on the quality of life.

A novel efficient Cu2WS4/MoS2step-scheme（S-scheme） heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed for the first time and applied in the removal of environmental pollutants.Among the as-prepared photocatalysts,the Cu2WS4/MoS2-8 % heterojunc tion photoc atalyst demonstrates the optimal photocatalytic performance,with the catalytic oxidation efficiency of tetracycline（TC） and the catalytic reduction efficiency of Cr6+reaching 93.3%and 82.1 %,respectively.The excellent catalytic properties of Cu2WS4/MoS2heterojunction photocatalysts are attributed to the effective separation pathways of charges and the presence of S-scheme heterojunctions,together with stronger redox capabilities.It is speculated that the photogenerated carrier migration path of the Cu2WS4/MoS2catalyst follows the typical S-scheme photocatalytic mechanism,which is verified by the in-depth experimental study and simulated calculations including the electron paramagnetic resonance（EPR） analysis,free radical quenching experiments,charge density distribution,and simulated built-in electric field formation at the interface,which acts as driving force to promote the separation of photoinduced electrons and holes.Finally,the photocatalytic mechanism of S-scheme photogenerated carrier migration for the Cu2WS4/MoS2catalyst is revealed based on the systematic experimental techniques and simulated calculations,accounting for its superior photocatalytic oxidation and reduction activities.This study provides inspiring implications to develop high-efficient S-scheme photocatalytic systems for versatile applications in solarenergy conversion.

Occurrence and Characterization of Pale,Soft,Exudative-Like Broiler Muscle Commercially Produced in China

Pale, soft, exudative-like （PSE-like） broiler muscle is a growing problem for meat industry all over the world. However, limited studies have been made to assess broiler meat quality in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics and incidence of PSE-like broiler muscle commercially produced in China. A total of 1 274 Pectoralis muscles of Arbor Acre broiler were randomly obtained from the processing line to determine the commercial incidence of PSE-like muscle based on color. Furthermore, broiler Pectoralis muscles selected from the 1 274 muscle samples were classified as PSE-like muscle （L＊〉53, n=33） and normal muscle （L＊〉48 and L＊=53, n=33） to assess meat quality. It was determined that PSE-like muscle had lower muscle pH values, lower water-holding capacity （WHC）, lower sarcoplasmic protein solubility, and lower total protein solubility than the normal muscle did. SDS-PAGE profile also showed that bands of approximate 96 and 24 kDa in sarcoplasmic protein and myofibrillar protein varied between these two groups, suggesting partial denaturation of sarcoplasmic proteins and precipitation on myofillarments. Correlation analysis showed that L＊ values have significant correlation with WHC and protein solubility. Furthermore, the distribution of L＊ values exhibited a normal curve with range varying from 42.70 to 58.37. It was considered that approximately 23.39% of the population was PSE-like muscle. These results suggest that PSE-like meat can represent a significant portion of commercially processed broiler breast meat in China and that the L＊ value measurement could be used to sort broiler meat quality using a cut-off point.

To clarify the functions and mechanism of stimulated by retinoic acid gene 8 （Stra8） in spermatogenesis, we analyzed the testes from Stra8 knockout and wild-type mice during the first wave of spermatogenesis. Comparisons showed no significant differences in morphology and number of germ cells at 11 days postpartum, while 21 differentially expressed genes （DEGs） associated with spermatogenesis were identified. We speculate that Stra8 performs many functions in different phases of spermatogenesis, such as establishment of spermatogonial stem cells, spermatogonial proliferation and self-renewal, spermatogonial differentiation and meiosis, through direct or indirect regulation of these DEGs. We therefore established a preliminary regulatory network of Stra8 during spermatogenesis. These results will provide a theoretical basis for further research on the mechanism underlying the role of Stra8 in spermatogenesis.

Implanted neural probes can detect weak discharges of neurons in the brain by piercing soft brain tissue,thus as important tools for brain science research,as well as diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases.However,the rigid neural probes,such as Utah arrays,Michigan probes,and metal microfilament electrodes,are mechanically unmatched with brain tissue and are prone to rejection and glial scarring after implantation,which leads to a significant degradation in the signal quality with the implantation time.In recent years,flexible neural electrodes are rapidly developed with less damage to biological tissues,excellent biocompatibility,and mechanical compliance to alleviate scarring.Among them,the mechanical modeling is important for the optimization of the structure and the implantation process.In this review,the theoretical calculation of the flexible neural probes is firstly summarized with the processes of buckling,insertion,and relative interaction with soft brain tissue for flexible probes from outside to inside.Then,the corresponding mechanical simulation methods are organized considering multiple impact factors to realize minimally invasive implantation.Finally,the technical difficulties and future trends of mechanical modeling are discussed for the next-generation flexible neural probes,which is critical to realize low-invasiveness and long-term coexistence in vivo.
