Evaluation of water management on arsenic methylation and volatilization in arsenic-contaminated soils strengthened by bioaugmentation and biostimulation

Arsenic(As) fate in paddy fields has been one of the most significant current issues due to the strong As accumulation potential of rice plants under fooded conditions. However,no attempt was done to explore As methylation and volatilization under non-fooded conditions. Herein, we investigated the effects of water management on As methylation and volatilization in three arsenic-contaminated soils enhanced by biostimulation with strawderived organic matter and bioaugmentation with genetic engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440(GE P. putida). Under fooded conditions, the application of biochar(BC), rice straw(RS)and their combination(BC+RS) increased total As in porewater. However, these effects were greatly attenuated under non-fooded conditions. Compared with RS amendment alone, the combination of GE P. putida and RS further promoted the As methylation and volatilization,and the promotion percentage under non-fooded conditions were significantly higher than that under fooded conditions. The combined GE P. putida and RS showed the highest efficiency in As methylation(88 μg/L) and volatilization(415.4 μg/(kg·year)) in the non-fooded soil with moderate As contamination. Finally, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis presented that methylated As, DOC and p H in porewater were the most important factors contributing to As volatilization. Overall, our findings suggest that combination of bioaugmentation with GE P. putida and biostimulation with RS/BC+RS is a potential strategy for bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils by enhancing As methylation and volatilization under non-fooded conditions.

Stable hydrogen isoscape in precipitation generated using data fusion for East China

The stable hydrogen isotope in precipitation is an effective environmental tracer for climatic and hydrologic ***,accurate and high-precision precipitation hydrogen isoscapes are currently unavailable in *** this study,a data fusion method based on Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN)is used to fuse the hydrogen isotopic composition(δ^(2)H_(p))of observations and isotope-equipped general circulation model(iGCM)simulations.A precipitation hydrogen isoscape with a temporal resolution of monthly and a spatial resolution of 50-60 km is established for East China for the 1969-2017 *** to building the isoscape,the performance of three data fusion methods(DFMs)and two bias correction methods(BCMs)is *** results indicate that the CNN fusion method performs the best with a correlation coefficient larger than 0.90 and root mean square error smaller than 10.5‰ when using observation as a *** fusion methods based on back propagation and long short-term memory neural network perform similarly,while slightly outperforming the bias correction ***,the CNN method is used to generate the hydrogen isoscape,and the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the hydrogen isotope in precipitation are analyzed based on this *** generated isoscape shows similar spatial and temporal distribution characteristics to *** general,the distribution pattern of δ^(2)H_(p) is consistent with the temperature effect in northern China,and consistent with the precipitation amount effect in southern *** trend of the δ^(2)H_(p) time series is consistent with that of observed precipitation and ***,the generated isoscape effectively reproduces the observations,and has the characteristics of time continuity and relative spatial regularity,which can provide valuable data support for tracking atmospheric and hydrological processes.

Geochemical modeling to aid experimental design for multiple isotope tracer studies of coupled dissolution and precipitation reaction kinetics

It is a challenge to make thorough but efficient experimental designs for the coupled mineral dissolution and precipitation studies in a multi-mineral system, because it is difficult to speculate the best experimental duration, optimal sampling schedule, effects of different experimental conditions, and how to maximize the experimental outputs prior to the actual experiments. Geochemical modeling is an efficient and effective tool to assist the experimental design by virtually running all scenarios of interest for the studied system and predicting the experimental outcomes. Here we demonstrated an example of geochemical modeling assisted experimental design of coupled labradorite dissolution and calcite and clayey mineral precipitation using multiple isotope tracers. In this study, labradorite(plagioclase) was chosen as the reactant because it is both a major component and one of the most reactive minerals in basalt. Following our isotope doping studies of single minerals in the last ten years, initial solutions in the simulations were doped withmultiple isotopes(e.g., Ca and Si). Geochemical modeling results show that the use of isotope tracers gives us orders of magnitude more sensitivity than the conventional method based on concentrations and allows us to decouple dissolution and precipitation reactions at near-equilibrium condition. The simulations suggest that the precise unidirectional dissolution rates can inform us which rate laws plagioclase dissolution has followed. Calcite precipitation occurred at near-equilibrium and the multiple isotope tracer experiments would provide near-equilibrium precipitation rates, which was a challenge for the conventional concentration-based experiments. In addition, whether the precipitation of clayey phases is the rate-limiting step in some multi-mineral systems will be revealed. Coordinatively unsaturated cobalt single-atom nanozymes for visual pesticides detection by smartphone-based platform

Manganese cobaltite(MnCo_(2)_(4))is a promising electrode material because of its attractive redox chemistry and excellent charge storage *** previous work demonstrated that the octahedrally-coordinated Mn are prone to react with the hydroxyl ions in alkaline electrolyte upon electrochemical cycling and separates on the surface of spinel to reconstruct into d-MnO_(2) nanosheets irreversibly,thus results in a change of the reaction mechanism with Kþion ***,the low capacity has greatly limited its practical ***,we found that the tetrahedrally-coordinated Co_(2) þions were leached when MnCo_(2)_(4) was equilibrated in 1 mol L^(-1) HCl solution,leading to the formation of layered CoOOH on MnCo_(2)_(4) surface which is originated from the covalency competition induced selective breakage of the CoT–O bond in CoT–O–CoO and subsequent rearrangement of free Co_(6) *** as-formed CoOOH is stable upon cycling in alkaline electrolyte,exhibits conversion reaction mechanism with facile proton diffusion and is free of massive structural evolution,thus enables utilization of the bulk electrode material and realizes enhanced speciﬁc capacity as well as facilitated charge transfer and ion *** general,our work not only offers a feasible approach to deliberate modiﬁcation of MnCo_(2)_(4)'s surface structure,but also provides an in-depth understanding of its charge storage mechanism,which enables rational design of the spinel oxides with promising charge storage properties.

Formation estimation and evolution mechanism of the pressure arch for non-circular tunnels under asymmetrical stress field

The tunneling-induced stress redistribution is dependent on the tunnel shape and the in-situ stress field, and the previous arch characterization method based on the circumferential or maximum principal stresses is only suitable for the circular tunnels under the hydrostatic stress field. In this study, a unified characterization method of the pressure arch for non-circular tunnels under the arbitrary stress field is proposed. By comparing the variations of compressive stress in different directions due to excavation, the ratio of the most significant increase in compressive stress is presented to characterize the arch effect, and the corresponding numerical algorithm is given. Since the proposed method takes the stress element as the basic analytical model, it can be easily applied to various complex excavation situations. Thereafter, combined with the established folding catastrophic model, an objective and unified quantitative method of the pressure arch boundaries is given. Using the proposed method, the longitudinal evolution of the pressure arch is analyzed. According to the expansion rate of the arch boundaries, three evolution stages including the initial formation, rapid expansion and stabilization are categorized. Parametric studies are conducted to illustrate the effect of ground properties and support stiffness on the pressure arch formation. It is found that the ground strength parameters and burial depth affect the arch range at a decreasing rate, while they have little effect on the arch shape. The lateral pressure coefficient has a significant effect on both the shape and range of the pressure arch. Increasing the support stiffness helps reduce the pressure arch range with a decreasing rate, while the synchronous variation of the elastic moduli of the surrounding rock and support does not affect the arch range under a certain relative elastic modulus. Finally, field monitoring is conducted to validate the proposed method in actual support design.
