Enhanced charge separation by incomplete calcination modified co-doped TiO_(2)nanoparticle for isothiazolinone photocatalytic degradation

Photocatalytic oxidation techniques are promising for degradation of the highly ecotoxic and refractory isothiazolinone bactericides in relevant industrial wastewaters.However,low charge separation and directional transport efficiency under solar light radiation restrain their practical application.Here,we report a nanostructured photocatalyst doped with Gd and B in TiO_(2)with carbon incorporation and defect formation through incomplete calcination.The specific surface area,grain size,and hydrophilicity of TiO_(2)are improved,which is beneficial for the interfacial reaction between the photocatalyst and pollutants.The reduction of the bandgap,the broadening of the photo-absorption range,and the retarded electron-hole recombination promote the photocatalytic performance due to the improved oxygen vacancies based on the electron distribution modification.The difference in partial density of states(ΔPDOS)between the current catalyst and raw TiO_(2)indicates that the co-doping of Gd and B with incomplete calcination changes the electronic hybridization of conduction band and valence band near the Fermi level,and affects the band gap energy.It improved charge separation and directional transport efficiency and benefited the formation of main active species,including•OH and O_(2)•−,for the pollutant decomposition.The rate of photocatalytic removal of benzisothiazolinone(BIT)by the current photocatalyst reaches 1.25 h^(−1),being 4.31 times that of TiO_(2).The current work offers a constructive approach to the design and synthesis of nanostructured photocatalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants.

Riverine sulfate sources and behaviors in arid environment,Northwest China:Constraints from sulfur and oxygen isotopes

The fate of riverine sulfate ion (SO_(4)^(2-)) and its environmental effects in arid environment are difficult to evaluate due to its complicated sources and strongly coupled behaviors with water cycle which is significantly modified by humans.To understand the sulfur cycle in aquatic systems in arid environment,the chemical and sulfur and oxygen isotopic compositions (δ^(34)S_(SO4)and δ^(18)O_(SO4)) of major rivers around the Badain Jaran Desert,northwestern China,were investigated.These rivers had averaged SO_(4)^(2-)content at 1336μmol/L,over 10times higher than the global average.The δ^(34)S_(SO4)and δ^(18)O_(SO4)values ranged from-5.3‰to+11.8‰and+1.6‰to+12.8‰,respectively.The end-member analysis and the inverse model showed that riverine sulfate was mainly derived from evaporites dissolution (0-87%),sulfide oxidation (13%-100%) and precipitation (0-33%),indicating heterogeneity in sulfur sources and behaviors along the river drainage with the lithology variations and climate gradients.Multiple isotopic tools combining with hydro-chemistry compositions could be applied to reveal sulfur cycle in arid environment.Based on the calculation,sulfide oxidation plays the primary role in the headwater and upstream in the Qilian-Mountains area,where sulfide is widely exposed.While the proportion of evaporites dissolution contributing to riverine sulfate is much higher in downstream in a drier environment.Besides,less precipitation and higher temperature can lead to more intensive evaporation,affecting the process of sulfide oxidation and enhancing the rates of evaporites dissolution and sulfate precipitation in the basin.

Understanding the spring phenology of Arctic tundra using multiple satellite data products and ground observations

The Arctic is highly sensitive to climate change,and the rise in its near-surface air temperatures has been almost twice the global average.The increased growth of the Arctic tundra and its changing seasonality have been observed,largely in response to the impacts of climate change.In this study,we investigated the temporal and spatial variations of the start of the growing season(SOS)using various remote sensing indices,including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index,Normalized Difference Water Index,and Normalized Difference Snow Index from 2000 to 2018 in Arctic tundra regions.The SOS was derived at 29 sites from ground observations,including CO2 flux data,phenological images,and field records that were used to validate the SOS from remote sensing indices.Our results revealed that the SOS was delayed by approximately 3.86 days per degree of latitude along the northward latitudinal gradient.From 2000 to 2018,the start of the growing season and the interannual variability differed greatly among tundra types.Although the overall trends were not significant from 2000 to 2018,the start of the growing season in different plant communities was consistently delayed after 2016.High Arctic vegetation,including(1)low wetland complexes(5–10 cm)dominated by sedges,grasses,and mosses,and(2)slightly higher prostrate and hemi-prostrate shrubs(<15 cm),experienced a delayed start of the growing season.The start of the growing season of Low Arctic vegetation,comprising(1)wetland complexes(10–40 cm)dominated by sedges,grasses,mosses,and dwarf shrubs,(2)moist tundra(20–50 cm)dominated by tussock cottongrass and dwarf shrubs,and(3)transition zones containing tundra and taiga,displayed no obvious trend.

Biohythane production from two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste:A review

The biotransformation of food waste(FW)to bioenergy has attracted considerable research attention as a means to address the energy crisis and waste disposal problems.To this end,a promising technique is two-stage anaerobic digestion(TSAD),in which the FW is transformed to biohythane,a gaseous mixture of biomethane and biohydrogen.This review summarises the main characteristics of FW and describes the basic principle of TSAD.Moreover,the factors influencing the TSAD performance are identified,and an overview of the research status;economic aspects;and strategies such as pre-treatment,co-digestion,and regulation of microbial consortia to increase the biohythane yield from TSAD is provided.Additionally,the challenges and future considerations associated with the treatment of FW by TSAD are highlighted.This paper can provide valuable reference for the improvement and widespread implementation of TSAD-based FW treatment.

Identification of high oxygen-consuming substances in stormwater drainage systems illicitly connected with sewage system

The dissolved oxygen content in water is an important indicator for assessing the quality of the water environment,and maintaining a certain amount of dissolved oxygen is essential for the healthy development of the ecological environment.When a water body is anoxic,the activity of anaerobic microorganisms increases and organic matter is decomposed to produce a large number of blackening and odorizing substances,resulting in black and odorous water bodies,which is a very common and typical phenomenon in China.Presently,there is still a relatively universal occurrence of illicitly connected stormwater and sewage pipes in the urban drainage pipe network in China,which makes oxygen-consuming substances be directly discharged into rivers through stormwater pipes and consume the dissolved oxygen in the water bodies,resulting in an oxygen deficiency of the water.This induces seasonal or year-round black and stink phenomena in urban rivers.Hence,identifying high oxygen-consuming substances,which lays the foundation for the subsequent removal of oxygen-consuming substances,is essential.Through a series of comparisons of water quality indicators and analysis of organic characteristics,it was found that the oxygen consumption capacity of domestic sewage was higher than that of industrial wastewater in the selected area of this study,and the oxygen-consuming substances of domestic sewage were small molecular amino acids.By comparing 20 conventional free amino acids,it was found that seven of them consumed oxygen easily,and compared with chemical oxygen consumption,biological oxygen consumption was in a leading position.

Heterogeneous Trends of Precipitation Extremes in Recent Two Decades over East Africa

East Africa is so vulnerable to the impacts of precipitation extremes varying from frequent floods to prolonged droughts.However,systematic regional assessment of precipitation extremes across seasons has received little attention,and most previous studies of precipitation extremes have employed many indices and sparse gauge observations giving marginalized details.In this study,we use three precipitation extreme indices to examine the intensity of the highest single-day rainfall record(rx1day),prevalence of very heavy rainfalls(r30mm),and persistence of successive wet days(cwd)at both annual and seasonal scales over recent two decades(1998-2018)based on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM)Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis data.The results show that the most intensive and frequent precipitation extremes are noticeable from January to May across the areas extending from Madagascar to the Tanzanian coastal zone.These areas also exhibit patches of significant increasing trends in frequency,duration,and intensity of precipitation extremes annually and seasonally.However,significant declines in frequency and intensity of precipitation extremes are observed from western Ethiopia to Congo-Uganda,especially in June-September.The October-December season witnesses higher interannual variability amounting to overall weak and less significant trends.Further subregional assessment shows overall declining intensity and frequency of precipitation extremes in northern part of the study areas.Mean wetness duration increased,with persistence of moderate wet days and slight reduction of severe events.This study unveils higher susceptibility of the East African region to the widely observed hotspots of precipitation extremes posing threats to food security,water resource,and human well-being.The region should consider upscaling irrigation schemes in addition to planning resilient and supportive infrastructures to withstand the upsurging precipitation extremes,especially along the coastal zone.

Aldehyde oxidase mediated enantioselective metabolic health risk of dinotefuran

Chiral pollutants often pose significant differential environmental health risks.In this study,the biotransformation of chiral dinotefuran(DIN)and its enantioselective metabolic toxicity mechanisms have been systemically investigated.Firstly,reversedphase chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry was developed to quantify the content of DIN R/S chiral enantiomer with pg level sensitivity,revealing a lower elimination rate constant(K_(e))of S-DIN(0.730 h^(-1))than R-DIN(0.746 h^(-1)).Secondly,the interaction mechanism between DIN metabolism and important endogenous bioactive molecules,such as aldehyde oxidase(AOX)and neurotransmitters,was revealed.The DIN nitro-group was converted into a guanidine group by the reducing site of nearby flavin adenine dinucleotide(FAD)in AOX with the preferred higher affinity of S-configuration.Meanwhile,the endogenous tryptophan(Trp)aldehyde metabolic intermediate,5-hydroxyindoleacetaldehyde(5-HIAL),provides a persistent electron donor for DIN reduction via the oxidation-catalyzed site in AOX,resulting in remarkable up-regulation of monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.Thirdly,the higher level of neurotransmitters further mediated dysregulation of oxylipin homeostasis via the serotonergic pathway,where S-DIN exhibited more pronounced liver lipid damage and environmental health risk with the accumulated lipid biomarkers,oxidized triglyceride(OxTG)and oxidized sphingomyelin(OxSM).This study elucidates the AOX-mediated enantioselectivity metabolic pathway of DIN,providing a new analytical method for chiral pollutants and paves the way for their health risk assessments.

Controllable chemical redox reactions to couple microbial degradation for organic contaminated sites remediation:A review

Global environmental concern over organic contaminated sites has been progressively conspicuous during the process of urbanization and industrial restructuring.While traditional physical or chemical remediation technologies may significantly destroy the soil structure and function,coupling moderate chemical degradation with microbial remediation becomes a potential way for the green,economic,and efficient remediation of contaminated sites.Hence,this work systematically elucidates why and how to couple chemical technology with microbial remediation,mainly focused on the controllable redox reactions of organic contaminants.The rational design of materials structure,selective generation of reactive oxygen species,and estimation of degradation pathway are described for chemical oxidation.Meanwhile,current progress on efficient and selective reductions of organic contaminants(i.e.,dechlorination,defluorination,-NO_(2) reduction)is introduced.Combined with the microbial remediation of contaminated sites,several consideration factors of how to couple chemical and microbial remediation are proposed based on both fundamental and practical points of view.This review will advance the understanding and development of chemical-microbial coupled remediation for organic contaminated sites.
