Characterization of submicron aerosol particles in winter at Albany,New York

A thorough understanding of chemical composition,particle pH,and pollutant emissions is essential to address the climate and human health effects of atmospheric particles.In this study,we used a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer(HR-ToF-AMS)and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer(SMPS)to characterize the composition of submicron particles.Moreover,we applied the ISORROPIA-II model to analyze the particle acidity effect on the compositional characterization of submicron particles from December 22,2016 to January 7,2017 in Albany,New York,USA.The results indicated that aerosols with mobility diameter from SMPS in the range 200–400 nm were the main contributors to the mass during the measurement period.The dominance of organics(47%)and sulfate(16%)was similar to previous observations in the eastern United States in Winter 2015,while the fraction of nitrate(23%)was much higher.Moreover,nitrate could easily form at colder temperatures and lower RH levels even when there were more acidic particle periods during the measurement period in Albany.The ISORROPIA-II model indicated that there were more acidic particles,which was estimated using pH values.Lower temperature conditions tended to favor nitrate formation.The nitrate concentration exceeded that of sulfate in the measurement period,even though the SO2and NOxemissions were similar.The organics in submicron particles were strongly influenced by the local emissions in winter.However,the inorganic compounds in submicron particles could be derived from regional transport as their pollution sources originated from different directions.This may help strategize emission reductions in the future.

Retrieval of refractive index of ultrafine single particle using hygroscopic growth factor obtained by high sensitive surface plasmon resonance microscopy

When exposed to different relative humidities (RHs),the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols will change because of changes in the aerosol particle size and complex refractive index (RI),which will affect haze formation and global climate change.The potential contributions of ultrafine particles to the atmospheric optical characteristics and to haze spreading cannot be ignored because of their high particle number concentrations and strong diffusibility;measurement of the optical properties of wet ultrafine particles is thus highly important for environmental assessment.Therefore,a surface plasmon resonance microscopy with azimuthal rotation illumination (SPRM-ARI) system is designed to determine the RIs of single particle aerosols with diameters of less than 100 nm in the hygroscopic growth process.Measurements are taken using mixed single particles with different mass ratios.The RIs of mixed single aerosols at different RHs are retrieved by measuring the scattering light intensity using the SPRM-ARI system and almost all the RIs of the bicomponent particles with different mass ratios decrease with increasing water content under high RH conditions.Finally,for each of the bicomponent particles,the maximum standard deviations for the retrieved RI values are only 2.06×10^(-3),3.08×10^(-3)and 3.83×10^(-3),corresponding to the NaCl and NaNO_(3)bicomponent particles with a 3:1 mass ratio at 76.0%RH,the NaCl and glucose particles with a 1:3 mass ratio at 89.0%RH,and the NaCl and OA particles with a 1:1 mass ratio at 78.0%RH,respectively;these results indicate that the high-sensitivity SPRM-ARI system can measure the RI effectively and accurately.

Investigating the effect of volatility on the hygroscopicities of acetate nanoparticle aerosols by surface plasmon resonance microscopy

Under high relative humidity(RH)conditions,the release of volatile components(such as acetate)has a significant impact on the aerosol hygroscopicity.In this work,one surface plasmon resonance microscopy(SPRM)measurement system was introduced to determine the hygroscopic growth factors(GFs)of three acetate aerosols separately or mixed with glucose at different RHs.For Ca(CH_(3)COO)_(2) or Mg(CH_(3)COO)_(2) aerosols,the hygroscopic growth trend of each time was lower than that of the previous time in three cyclic humidification from 70% RH to 90% RH,which may be due to the volatility of acetic acid leading to the formation of insoluble hydroxide(Ca(OH)_(2) or Mg(OH)_(2))under high RH conditions.Then the third calculated GF(using the Zdanovskii-Stokes-Robinson method)for Ca(CH_(3)COO)_(2) or Mg(CH_(3)COO)_(2) in bicomponent aerosols with 1:1 mass ratio were 3.20% or 5.33% lower than that of the first calculated GF at 90% RH.The calculated results also showed that the hygroscopicity change of bicomponent aerosol was negatively correlated with glucose content,especially when the mass ratio of Mg(CH_(3)COO)_(2) to glucose was 1:2,the GF at 90% RH only decreased by4.67% after three cyclic humidification.Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrum(ICP-AES)based measurements also indicated that the changes of Mg^(2+)concentration in bicomponent was lower than that of the single-component.The results of this study reveal thatduring the efflorescence transitions of atmospheric nanoparticles,the organic acids diffusion rate may be inhibited by the coating effect of neutral organic components,and the particles aging cycle will be prolonged.

Bilateral carotid cavernous fistula after trauma:a case report and literature review

Background:Carotid cavernous fistula is a rare complication that is typically associated with head trauma and skull base fractures.The traumatic bilateral carotid cavernous fistula are significantly rarer.Case presentations:We report a case of a 61-year-old man presenting with unilateral exophthalmos,swollen eyelids,conjunctival congestion,and edema etiologically associated with severe trauma.Thereafter,the patient demonstrated symptoms of contralateral oculomotor nerve injury caused by skull base fracture,such as ptosis of eyelid,dilated pupils,and eye movement disorder,and was diagnosed with bilateral carotid cavernous fistula.Conclusions:The patient recovered after undergoing endovascular embolization of bilateral cavernous sinus fistulas.The patient demonstrated the classic symptoms of an extremely rare condition known as bilateral carotid cavernous fistula,in only one eye.Reporting and analyzing this case will help us elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this disease.

Study on the Sediment Transport Flux and Mechanism in the Bohai Strait at the Tidal and Monthly Scales in Summer

Based on the data of tidal currents and suspended sediment concentrations observed synchronously at 11 stations in the Bohai Strait lasting for 25 hours,the temporal and spatial variations of currents and suspended sediment concentrations in the Bohai Strait in summer were analyzed.The Study preliminarily discussed the transport mechanism,transport trend and transport flux of suspended sediments in summer,using flux-mechanism decomposition method and numerical simulation.The suspended sediment transport was mainly controlled by advection and next influenced by vertical net circulation,while resuspension is relatively weak in Bohai Strait.The single-width fluxes of investigation stations varied from 3.8 to 89.1 gm^(−1) s^(−1),with the maximum value in Miaodao Strait.The suspended sediment transport trends in Laotieshan channel along the vertical section are obviously distinct.The waters mainly flow out of the Bohai Sea in surface layer,while into the Bohai Sea in bottom layer.However,the transport trends of other channels in the centre and south are consistent vertically.The sediments in the Bohai Strait follows the transport pattern of moving outward from the south and inward from the north in summer,i.e.,the sediments are carried out of the Bohai Sea through the Laotieshan channel,while into the Bohai Sea through other channels.And the outflow flux exceeds the inflow flux in August with the net water flux of 1.4×10^(10)m^(3),basically same as the deliveries of the rivers into the Bohai Sea.Moreover,the suspended sediment flux is 0.33 Mt under the action of tidal residual currents in the Yellow Sea in August.

Simulation of three-stage operating temperature for supersaturation water-based condensational growth tube

In order to realize accurate dynamic control of supersaturation and to study condensation growth characteristics of nanoparticles through different levels of super saturation,a series of parametric analyses and systematic comparisons between two-stage and three-stage operating temperature designs were simulated with COMSOL Multiphysics.The simulation results showed that the three-stage operating temperature did not change peak supersaturation compared with two operating temperatures,and the three-stage operating temperature was superior in decreasing the amount of water vapor and the temperature,thus lowering particle loss and variation in detection and collection.The peak supersaturation level increased by 0.3 as the flow rate increased from 0.6 to 2.0 L/min,but the supersaturation peak moved from 0.0027 z0 to 0.08 z0(i.e.,the growth time and the final size decreased by 40%).Peak supersaturation increased as the temperature difference increased or the temperature difference window was shifting left,and minimum activation size decreased.Shifting the 70℃temperature difference window from 9℃,79℃-1℃,71℃for the condenser and initiator temperatures resulted in peak supersaturation in the centerline being above 5.8,and the activation size changed as low as 1 nm.Experiments with flow rates varying by a factor of 2.5(from 0.6 to 1.5 L/min)resulted in a final size decrease of 43%(from 3.2 to 1.8μm),and experimental results of outlet particle size distributions were equivalent with theoretical analysis as the operating temperature was changed.

Research on robot grabbing system based on hybrid cloud

Robot grabbing has been successfully applied to a range of challenging environments but met the resource bottleneck. To answer this question, a hybrid cloud-based robot grabbing system is proposed, which supports centralized bin-picking management and deployment, large-scale storage, and communication technologies. The hybrid cloud combines the powerful computational capabilities through massive parallel computation and higher data storage facilities in the public cloud with data privacy in the private data center. The benchmark tasks against a public cloud based on robot grabbing method are evaluated, whose results indicate that the whole system reduces the data collection time and increases elastic resource scheduling and is adapted in the real industry.

Origin and geochemistry of surface sediments in the mud deposit area offshore the Shandong Peninsula,China

The waters offshore the Shandong Peninsula separate the North Yellow Sea from the South Yellow Sea,and receive a large amount of terrestrial material from Chinese and Korean rivers,making it an ideal area for studying land-sea interactions.However,little attention has been given to measuring sediment transportation in most previous studies.Based on an analysis in composition of major and trace elements and particle size characteristics from 62 surface sediment samples from the northeastern region off Shandong Peninsula,the type,element composition,and controlling factors of the surface sediments were investigated.In addition,the transportation of sediments from source to sink was described from measured thermohaline data.The results show two types of surface sediments:sandy silt and silt.The sediments were mainly terrestrial;and marine carbonate had little effect on sediment composition.Shown on a binary diagram of Rb/Sc to Co/Sc,the Huanghe(Yellow)and Changjiang(Yangtze)Rivers are the main sources of surface sediments in the study area.The component mixing model showed that the relative contribution of sediment from the Huanghe River was up to 92%,followed by the Changjiang River(8%).The Yellow Sea Warm Current and the North Shandong Peninsula Coastal Current met at∼37.7°N in the study area,and were the main forces carrying sediment from the two main river sources.However,there was a deficit of transported material into the study area in summer.The secondary distribution of sediment from the two river sources was controlled by tidal currents and waves.

The Reliability and Operational Test System of a Power Grid with Large-scale Renewable Integration

This paper proposes a reliability and operational test system named XJTU-ROTS2017,characterized by large-scale renewable power integration and long-distance transmission.The test system has 38 nodes,63 lines,15 transformers and 20 generators in three areas,with peak load 10,421 MW and total installed capacity 16050 MW.Electricity primarily transmits from a resource-rich area to a load area,carrying wind/solar power generation.The determination of component parameters and grid topology is based on design manuals and typical practices.The test system can be conveniently applied to reliability evaluation and operation optimization of composite power systems integrating coal/hydro/solar/wind resources.Finally,the extended applications to AC/DC hybrid power systems and interconnected power systems are discussed.

Erythroblast island macrophages: recent discovery and future perspectives

Erythroblastic island(EBI),composed of a central macrophage surrounded by developing erythroid cells,is a structure found in hematopoietic tissues such as fetal liver and bone marrow.It is the first described hematopoietic niche that predominantly supports erythropoiesis.Although it is well accepted that EBIs and EBI macrophage play important roles during erythropoiesis,the mechanisms by which they support erythropoiesis remain largely unclear due to our inability to identify and isolate EBI macrophages.Earlier efforts to identify surface markers for EBI macrophages have focused on the adhesion molecules which are involved in macrophage’s interaction with erythroblasts.These include EMP,Vcam1,CD169,CD163,and aV integrin.Findings from these earlier studies suggested that combination of Vcam1,CD169,and mouse macrophage surface marker F4/80 can be used to define mouse EBI macrophage.We found that not all F4/80+Vcam1+CD169+macrophages are EBI macrophages.Instead,we discovered that EBI macrophages are characterized by the expression of Epor in both mouse and man.RNA-seq analyses of the newly identified EBI macrophages revealed that EBI macrophages have involved specialized function in supporting erythropoiesis.Our findings provide foundation for future studies.Here we will review current knowledge of EBI macrophages and discuss future perspectives.
