Successful outcomes of unilateral vs bilateral pedicle screw fixation for lumbar interbody fusion:A meta-analysis with evidence grading

BACKGROUND Whether it’s better to adopt unilateral pedicle screw(UPS)fixation or to use bilateral pedicle screw(BPS)one for lumbar degenerative diseases is still controversially undetermined.AIM To make a comparison between UPS and BPS fixation as to how they work efficaciously and safely in patients suffering from lumbar degenerative diseases.METHODS We have searched a lot in the databases through 2020 with index terms such as“unilateral pedicle screw fixation”and“bilateral pedicle screw fixation.”Only randomized controlled trials and some prospective cohort studies could be found,yielding 15 studies.The intervention was unilateral pedicle screw fixation;Primarily We’ve got outcomes of complications and fusion rates.Secondarily,we’ve achieved outcomes regarding total blood loss,operative time,as well as length of stay.Softwares were installed and utilized for subgroup analysis,analyzing forest plots,sensitivity,heterogeneity,forest plots,publication bias,and risk of bias.RESULTS Fifteen previous cases of study including 992 participants have been involved in our meta-analysis.UPS had slightly lower effects on fusion rate[relative risk(RR)=0.949,95%CI:0.910 to 0.990,P=0.015],which contributed mostly to this metaanalysis,and similar complication rates(RR=1.140,95%CI:0.792 to 1.640,P=0.481),Δvisual analog scale[standard mean difference(SMD)=0.178,95%CI:-0.021 to 0.378,P=0.080],andΔOswestry disability index(SMD=-0.254,95%CI:-0.820 to 0.329,P=0.402).In contrast,an obvious difference has been observed inΔJapanese Orthopedic Association(JOA)score(SMD=0.305,95%CI:0.046 to 0.563,P=0.021),total blood loss(SMD=-1.586,95%CI:-2.182 to-0.990,P=0.000),operation time(SMD=-2.831,95%CI:-3.753 to-1.909,P=0.000),and length of hospital stay(SMD=-0.614,95%CI:-1.050 to-0.179,P=0.006).CONCLUSION Bilateral fixation is more effective than unilateral fixation regarding fusion rate after lumbar interbody fusion.However,JOA,operation time,total blood loss,as well as length of stay were improved for unilateral fixation.

Influence of Firing Temperature on Properties of High Alumina Bricks

To reduce production costs and make full and reasonable use of raw materials,high alumina bricks were prepared using tabular corundum and mullite as aggregates,sillimanite as intermediate particles,and white fused corundum powder,α-alumina micropowder,and Suzhou soil as the matrix,firing at different temperatures(1420,1440,1460,1480,1500 and 1520℃)for 4 h.The apparent porosity(AP),the bulk density(BD),the cold crushing strength(CCS),the thermal shock resistance(TSR),the refractoriness under load(RUL)and the creep rate of the samples were tested.The effects of the firing temperature on the creep rate(1450℃×50 h,under a load of 0.2 MPa)of the samples were studied.The results show that with the sillimanite addition of 22.5 mass%,the sample fired at 1460℃for 4 h performs the best comprehensive properties:the AP of 17.5%,the BD of 2.75 g·cm^(-3),the CCS of 100.5 MPa,the TSR number of 35 cycles,the RUL of 1682℃,and the creep rate of-0.428%,which can prolong the service life of furnaces.

Boosting thermal stability and crystallization of closed-loop-recyclable biodegradable poly(p-dioxanone) by end-group regulation

A chemically closed-loop-recyclable biodegradable polymer,poly(p-dioxanone)(PPDO),is one of the ideal candidates for single-use plastic products due to its suitability for different application scenarios.Fascinatingly,when PPDO wastes can be collected,its monomer p-dioxanone(PDO) will be obtained through chemical recycling of these wastes;when cannot be collected,the wastes are able to be biodegraded into harmless substances.However,unsatisfied thermal stability and low crystallization rate of PPDO restrict its wider applications.Herein,based on end-group regulation,we simultaneously realized the significant enhancement of thermal stability and crystallization of PPDO through the simple melt processing with tributyl phosphite(TBP) or triphenyl phosphite(TPP).The model reactions were conducted to investigate the reaction mechanism and theoretical products during the preparation of PPDO/phosphite compounds.Two kinds of phosphites were proved to act as the end-capped reagent and chain extender in the melt processing,while TBP presented better reactivity.As a result,the activation energy of thermal decomposition was largely elevated,and the unprecedented T_(5%)(the temperature at a weight loss of 5%) and Tmax(the temperature at a maximum rate of weight loss) of PPDO were obtained,i.e.,T_(5%)of ~330 ℃ and Tmaxof ~385 ℃ in N_(2) atmosphere,T_(5%)of ~240 ℃ and Tmaxof ~317 ℃ in air atmosphere,respectively.Furthermore,the increased crystallization rate,crystallinity,crystalline orderliness,and realizable monomer recovery(yield >90%,purity >99.9%) of PPDO/phosphite compounds were confirmed.

Corrosion Behavior of Pipeline Steel in Oilfield Produced Water under Dynamic Corrosion System

In order to predict the corrosion trendency of X100 pipeline steel in flowing oilfield produced water,the effect of flow rate on the corrosion behavior of X100 pipeline steel was studied under general dynamic condition and simulated real working condition at the flow rate of 0.2,0.4,and 0.6 m·s^(-1).Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the corrosion behavior of X100 steel.Energy dispersive spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze corrosion product composition and micromorphology.The experimental results show that the corrosion is more serious under simulated real working conditions than that under the general dynamic conditions.In any case the corrosion current density increases with the increase of the flow rate,and the total impedance value decreases.The corrosion products include Fe_(3)O_(4),Fe_(2)O_(3),and FeOOH.The mass transfer and electrochemistry were simulated by flow coupled in COMSOL software.The multiphysical field coupling simulation results are closer to the engineering practice than the single flow field simulation,and similar results from the experiments were obtained.Both experimental and simulation results reveal that the higher flow rate is,the more serious corrosion appear and the more corrosion products accumulate.By combining experimental and COMSOL simulation data,the corrosion process model of X100 steel was proposed.

SOD-like activity of CeO_(2) nanoparticles(Ce NPs)is driven by Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+),high oxidative stress can oxidize Ce^(3+) to reduce the ratio of Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+),inactivating the SOD activity of Ce NPs.Herein,we found Au@Ce NPs,assembled by Au NPs and Ce NPs,exhibited high-performance of SOD mimetic enzyme activity even upon the oxidation of H_(2)O_(2).Ce NPs supported by nano-Au can acquire the electrons from Au NPs through the enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR),maintaining the stability of Ce^(3+)/Ce^(4+) and SOD-like activity.Meanwhile,Au@Ce NPs retained the peroxidase function and catalase function.As a result,Au@Ce NPs effectively scavenged O_(2·-) and the derived ROS in AML cells,which are the important signaling source that drives AML cell proliferation and accelerates cell cycle progression.When HL-60 cells were treated by Au@Ce NPs,the removal of endogenous ROS signal significantly arrested cell cycle at G1 phase and suppressed the cell proliferation by blocking the mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs)signaling and the Akt/Cyclin D1 cell cycle signaling.Importantly,this treatment strategy showed therapeutic effect for subcutaneous transplantation of AML model as well as a satisfactory result in diminishing the leukocyte infiltration of liver and spleen particularly.Thus,assembled Au@Ce NPs show the high-performance SOD-like activity,promising the potential in treating AML and regulating abnormal ROS in other diseases safely and efficiently.

A Model to Evaluate the Device-Level Performance of Thermoelectric Cooler with Thomson Effect Considered

In this paper,a one-dimensional thermodynamic model was developed to evaluate the device-level performance of thermoelectric cooler(TEC)with the Thomson effect,contact resistance,gap heat leakage,heat sink,and heat load taken into account.The model was generalized and simplified by introducing dimensionless parameters.Experimental measurements showed good agreement with analytical results.The parametric analysis indicated that the influence of the Thomson effect on cooling capacity continued to expand with increasing current,while the effect on COP hardly changed with current.Low thermal contact resistance was beneficial to obtain lower hot-junction temperature,which can even reduce 2 K compared with the electrical contact resistance in the case study.The gap heat leakage was a negative factor affecting the cooling performance.When the thermal resistance of the heat sink was small,the negative effect of heat leakage on performance would be further enlarged.The enhancement of heat load temperature would increase the cooling power of the TEC.For example,an increase of 5 K in heat load can increase the cooling capacity by about 4%.However,once the current exceeded the optimum value,the raising effect on the cooling power would be weakened.The research can provide an analytical approach for the designer to perform trade studies to optimize the TEC system.

Aerogels with excellent properties combination of ultralow density and great thermal insulation are drawing attention to applications in harsh conditions.Common aerogels,however,are usually constructed with nanoparticles with a weakness in physical combination.The silicon carbide nano wire(SiC_(NW)) is a kind of one-dimensional(1D) nano wire possessing the promising properties of flexibility,great thermal insulation,and stability at high temperatures.An aerogel constructed by the SiC_(NW) will produce a great material with a promising material,the amazing SiC_(NW) aerogel.Here,a novel SiC_(NW) aerogel was fabricated consisting of quantities of β-SiC_(NW) of15-40 nm in diameter and tens to hundreds of micrometers in length.This SiC_(NW) aerogel possessed an ultralow density of 5.82 mg·cm^(-3),high-temperature resistance,and great thermal insulation with its thermal conductivities of0.063 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1) at 100℃ and 0.243 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1) at900℃ in He.Furthermore,the thermal insulation applicability of this aerogel was simulated.This study provides a promising way for designing and fabricating other multifunctional nanowire aerogels for high-temperature thermal insulation.

A secure and high-performance multi-controller architecture for software-defined networking

Controllers play a critical role in software-defined networking(SDN).However,existing singlecontroller SDN architectures are vulnerable to single-point failures,where a controller's capacity can be saturated by flooded flow requests.In addition,due to the complicated interactions between applications and controllers,the flow setup latency is relatively large.To address the above security and performance issues of current SDN controllers,we propose distributed rule store(DRS),a new multi-controller architecture for SDNs.In DRS,the controller caches the flow rules calculated by applications,and distributes these rules to multiple controller instances.Each controller instance holds only a subset of all rules,and periodically checks the consistency of flow rules with each other.Requests from switches are distributed among multiple controllers,in order to mitigate controller capacity saturation attack.At the same time,when rules at one controller are maliciously modified,they can be detected and recovered in time.We implement DRS based on Floodlight and evaluate it with extensive emulation.The results show that DRS can effectively maintain a consistently distributed rule store,and at the same time can achieve a shorter flow setup time and a higher processing throughput,compared with ONOS and Floodlight.

Bio-adhesive polysaccharide-based hydrogels have attracted much attention in first-aid hemostasis and wound healing for excellent biocompatibility,antibacterial property and pro-healing bioactivity.Yet,the inadequate mechanical properties and bio-adhesion limit their applications.Herein,based on dynamic covalent bonds,photo-triggered covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds,multifunctional bio-adhesive hydrogels comprising modified carboxymethyl chitosan,modified sodium alginate and tannic acid are developed.Multi-crosslinking strategy endows hydrogels with improved strength and flexibility simultaneously.Owing to cohesion enhancement strategy and self-healing ability,considerable bio-adhesion is presented by the hydrogel with a maximal adhesion strength of 162.6 kPa,12.3-fold that of commercial fibrin glue.Based on bio-adhesion and pro-coagulant activity(e.g.,the stimulative aggregation and adhesion of erythrocytes and platelets),the hydrogel reveals superior hemostatic performance in rabbit liver injury model with blood loss of 0.32 g,only 54.2%of that in fibrin glue.The healing efficiency of hydrogel for infected wounds is markedly better than commercial EGF Gel and Ag+Gel due to the enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant properties.Through the multi-crosslinking strategy,the hydrogels show enhanced mechanical properties,fabulous bio-adhesion,superior hemostatic performance and promoting healing ability,thereby have an appealing application value for the first-aid hemostasis and infected wound healing.
