China faces a substantial burdensome pandemic of obesity.Recent data from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention suggested that over an estimated 8.1%of Chinese adults(85 million Chinese adults)had obesity in 2018,which was three times the level in 2004.[1]To understand the trends of overweight and obesity in China,we accessed the country/territory-level year-specific data of age-standardized summary exposure value(SEV,standing for the pooled proportion among the population),deaths,and disability-adjusted life of years(DALYs)for high body mass index(BMI,high BMI was defined as the BMI level higher than theoretical minimum risk exposure level[25 kg/m2])and its associated diseases for 204 countries/territories between 1990 and 2019 using data from the Global Burden of Disease Collaborative Network.[2]Previous literature described detailed methods for the data synthesis.[3,4]Using the country/territory-level data by year,we calculated the estimated annual percentage changes(EAPCs)with 95%uncertainty intervals(UI)to estimate the annual changing patterns of age-standardized SEV,death,and DALY rates among 204 countries/territories.To compare statistics from China and other regions,we calculated the corresponding estimates from regions including global,North Africa and Middle East,Sub-Saharan Africa,Western Pacific Region,European Union,Latin America and Caribbean,and South Asia.

To the Editor:Acute fatty liver of pregnancy(AFLP)is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease unique to pregnancy that typically occurs in the third trimester and is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in critically ill patients.^([1])The Swansea diagnostic criteria have been widely used in the diagnosis of AFLP worldwide since their proposal.The Swansea criteria include clinical symptoms and laboratory tests,imaging,and pathological examination results.

The catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)is considered a feasible method for VOCs treatment by virtue of its low technical cost,high economic efficiency,and low additionally produced pollutants,which is of important social value.Singleatom catalysts(SACs)with 100%atom utilization and uniform active sites usually have high activity and high product selectivity,and promise a broad range of applications.Precise regulation of the microstructures of SACs by means of defect engineering,interface engineering,and electronic effects can further improve the catalytic performance of VOCs oxidation.In this review,we introduce the mechanisms of VOCs oxidation,and systematically summarize the recent research progress of SACs in catalytic VOCs total oxidation into CO_(2)and H_(2)O,and then discuss the effects of various structural regulation strategies on the catalytic performance.Finally,we summarize the current problems yet to be solved and challenges currently faced in this field,and propose future design and research ideas for SACs in catalytic oxidation of VOCs.

The relationship between physical activity in early pregnancy and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: a cohort study in Chinese women

Lower adiponectin and higher leptin levels are reported to correlate with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM). In addition, both adiponectin and leptin as common adipokines, are widely involved in lipid metabolism. We aimed to examine how lipid species mediated the associations of maternal adiponectin and leptin with subsequent risk of GDM in Chinese pregnant women. Methods Maternal lipidomics, adiponectin, and leptin were measured in early pregnancy(6-15 weeks of gestation) among 327 GDM women and 654 matched controls in a nested case-control study within Tongji-Shuangliu Birth Cohort. Plasma lipidomics were measured by UHPLC-MS. Serum adiponectin was determined by ELISA, and serum leptin was analyzed by Meso Scale Discovery U-PLEX Metabolic Assays. Lipid species were natural log-transformed and standardized to z-scores before statistical analyses. Multivariable linear regression and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO) regression were performed to identify lipids that were the most informative and parsimonious features associated with adiponectin and leptin, respectively. Corresponding lipid scores were established based on the z-scores and coefficients of selected lipids. Mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate the mediating effect of lipids in the associations of adiponectin and leptin with GDM risk. Results Of the 328 lipids, linear regression and LASSO regression both identified 20 lipid molecules that were correlated with adiponectin and leptin, respectively, which mainly belong to diacylglyceride(DAG), triacylglycerol(TAG), lysophosphatidylcholine(LPC), phosphatidylcholine(PC), and sphingolipids. After multivariable adjustment, each 1-SD increment of adiponectin-related lipid score was associated with 49%(odds ratio, 0.51, 95% confidence interval: 0.43, 0.61) lower risk of GDM, while each 1-SD increment of leptin-related lipid score was associated with 1.33-fold(95% confidence interval: 1.13, 1.56) risk. BACKGROUND:We aimed to examine prospective associations between diff erent intensities and diff erent types of physical activity(PA)in early pregnancy and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy(HDP)among Chinese women.METHODS:A total of 6,820 pregnant women from the Tongji-Shuangliu Birth Cohort were included in this study.The pregnancy physical activity questionnaire(PPAQ)was used to assess PA,including household/caregiving,occupational,sports/exercise,and transportation activities in the first trimester of pregnancy.The diagnosis of HDP was collected,including gestational hypertension(GH)and preeclampsia(PE).Data were analyzed by unconditional multivariate logistic regression,and the odds ratio(OR)and 95%confi dence interval(CI)were calculated.RESULTS:A total of 178(2.6%)of the 6,820 women were diagnosed with HDP,of which 126(1.8%)were GH and 52(0.8%)were PE.Overall,we found no association between PA in early pregnancy and PE.A trend toward lower risk was found only among women with GH and among those with higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity(MVPA)(adjusted OR 0.54,95%CI 0.31–0.96).No association was observed between PA and HDP in early pregnancy,regardless of diff erent intensities or types of PA.CONCLUSION:MVPA in the first trimester is an influencing factor of HDP.Encouraging pregnant women to engage in MVPA in the fi rst trimester may help to prevent GH.

Cardiovascular disease(CVD)and depression and anxiety contribute substantially to the current disease burden worldwide as well as in China.Both depression and anxiety are highly prevalent among patients with CVD.We systematically reviewed the literature to disentangle the role of depression and anxiety disorders in the onset and prognosis of CVD with an emphasis on cohort studies conducted in the Chinese population.Despite the lack of large-scale prospective studies in China,the available evidence implies that both depression and anxiety are closely associated with the onset and prognosis of CVD,including ischemic heart disease and stroke,in Chinese adults.Putative behavioral and biological mechanisms are implicated in the link between depression/anxiety and CVD.Timely screening and diagnosis followed by proper treatment should be implemented for depression and anxiety in both the general population and patients with CVD.Current standard treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and psychotherapies are recommended for CVD patients with depression,although their efficacy for reducing CVD morbidity and mortality remains uncertain.In conclusion,prospective studies on the link between depression/anxiety and the onset and prognosis of CVD are urgently needed in the Chinese population,and more efforts are warranted to examine the efficacy of depression and anxiety treatments for CVD patients,particularly the integrated care model of including psychiatrists in a multidisciplinary clinical group.

With the rapid development of intensive farming,the aquaculture industry uses a great many antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of bacterial diseases.Despite their therapeutic functions,the overuse and accumulation of antibiotics also pose a threat to aquaculture organisms.In the present study,ayu(Plecoglossus altivelis)was used as a fish model to study the impacts of ciprofloxacin(CIP)overuse on intestinal homeostasis and immune response during subsequent Pseudomonas plecoglossicida infection.Based on 16S rRNA gene amplification and Illumina sequencing,we found that CIP pre-exposure caused significant variation in intestinal microbiota,including increased species richness,altered microbiota composition and interaction networks,and increased metabolic dysfunction.Furthermore,immunohistochemical analysis indicated that CIP pre-exposure resulted in severe mucosal layer damage,goblet cell reduction,and epithelial cell necrosis of the intestinal barrier in infected ayu.Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR)showed that disruption of intestinal homeostasis impaired systemic antiinfection immune responses in the intestine,gill,spleen,and head kidney,while inhibiting IL-1β,TNF-α,and IL-10 expression and promoting TGF-βexpression.Our findings indicated that CIP administration can directly affect intestinal microbiota composition and intestinal integrity in ayu fish.This perturbation of intestinal homeostasis is likely responsible for the lower survival rate of hosts following subsequent infection as the capacity to mount an effective immune response is compromised.This study also provides preliminary clues for understanding the effects of antibiotic overuse on higher vertebrates through trophic transfer.

Assessment of quality of life for the patients with cervical cancer at different clinical stages

With improved overall survival of cervical cancer patients, the importance of the quality of life (QOL) is increasingly recognized. This study was conducted to compare the QOL of women with different stage cervical cancer before and after treatment to facilitate improved cervical cancer prevention and treatment. We used the generic Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (MOS SF-36) to collect QOL information. Based on SF-36, we interviewed cervical cancer patients at West China Second Affiliated Hospital and Sichuan Cancer Hospital between May 2010 and January 2011. A total of 92 patients with precancerous lesions, 93 with early cancer, and 35 with advanced cancer responded to our survey. Average physical component summary (PCS) scores were significantly different between the three groups at every time point (P < 0.05). Average mental component summary (MCS) scores were significantly different between the three groups after treatment (P < 0.05). Average PCS and MCS scores increased gradually from the pretreatment to posttreatment period for patients with precancerous lesions. However, they reached the lowest at 1 month after treatment for patients with early and advanced cancers and rebounded between 1 and 6 months after treatment. Our results indicate that patients with precancerous lesions and early cervical cancer show better overall QOL than do those with advanced cervical cancer. Additionally, patients with early cancer recover more quickly than do those with advanced cancer in terms of both physical and mental functions. Thus, early detection and treatment initiatives may improve the QOL for patients with precancerous lesions and cervical cancer.

Auricularia auricular polysaccharide-low molecular weight chitosan polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles: Preparation and characterization

Novel polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles(AAP/LCS NPs) were prepared in this study and these were produced by mixing negatively charged auricularia auricular polysaccharide(AAP)with positively charged low molecular weight chitosan(LCS) in an aqueous medium. The AAP was extracted and purified from auricularia auricular, and then characterized by micr OTOF-Q mass spectrometry, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, moisture analyzer and SEM. The yield, moisture, and total sugar content of the AAP were 4.5%, 6.2% and 90.12%(w/w), respectively. The AAP sample was water-soluble and exhibited white flocculence. The characteristics of AAP/LCS NPs, such as the particle size, zeta potential, morphology, FT-IR spectra, DSC were investigated. The results obtained revealed that the AAP/LCS NPs had a spherical shape with a diameter of 223 nm and a smooth surface, and the results of the FT-IR spectra and DSC investigations indicated that there was an electrostatic interaction between the two polyelectrolyte polymers. Bovine serum albumin(BSA, p I = 4.8) and bovine hemoglobin(BHb, pI = 6.8) were used as model drugs to investigate the loading and release features of the AAP/LCS NPs. The results obtained showed that the AAP/LCS NPs had a higher entrapment efficiency(92.6%) for BHb than for BSA(81.5%). The cumulative release of BSA and BHb from AAP/LCS NPs after 24 h in vitro was 95.4% and 91.9%, respectively. The in vitro release demonstrated that AAP/LCS NPs provided a sustained release matrix suitable for the delivery of protein drugs. These studies demonstrate that AAP/LCS NPs have a very promising potential as a delivery system for protein drugs.
