Removal of kathon by UV-C activated hydrogen peroxide:Kinetics,mechanisms,and enhanced biodegradability assessment

Kathon(CMI-MI),a mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one(CMI)and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one(MI),was extensively used in industry as a nonoxidizing biocide or disinfectant.However,it would show adverse effects on aquatic life when it is discharged into surface water.In this study,the removal performance,parameter influence,degradation products and enhancement of subsequent biodegradation of CMI-MI in UV/H_(2)O_(2)system were systematically investigated.The degradation rate of CMI-MI could reach 90%under UV irradiation for 20 min when the dosage of H_(2)O_(2)was 0.3 mmol·L^(–1).The DOC(dissolved organic carbon)mineralization rate of CMI-MI could reach 35%under certain conditions([H_(2)O_(2)]=0.3 mmol·L^(–1),UV irradiation for 40 min).kobs was inversely proportional to the concentration of CMI-MI and proportional to the concentration of H_(2)O_(2).The degradation rate of CMIMI was almost unchanged in the pH range from 4 to 10.Except the presence of CO_(3)^(2-)inhibited the removal rate of CMI-MI,SO_(4)^(2-),Cl^(-),NO_(3)^(-),and NH_(4)^(+) did not interfere with the degradation of CMI-MI in the system.It was found that UV/H_(2)O_(2)system had lower energy consumption and more economic advantage compared with UV/PS system by comparing the EEO(electric energy per order)values under the same conditions.Two main organic products were identified,namely HCOOH and CH_(3)NH_(2).There’s also the formation of Cl^(-)and SO_(4)^(2-).After UV and UV/H_(2)O_(2)photolysis,the biochemical properties of CMI-MI solution were obviously improved,especially the UV/H_(2)O_(2)treatment effect was better,indicating that UV/H_(2)O_(2)technology is expected to combine with biotechnology to remove CMI-MI effectively and environmentally friendly from wastewater.

Steam disinfection enhances bioaccessibility of metallic nanoparticles in nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats,pacifiers,and teethers

Nano-enabled silicone-rubber articles for feeding or chewing could be a source of metallic nanoparticles(NPs)directly exposed to infants and young children.However,the impact of steam disinfection on release of NPs and the related potential risks to children's health are unknown.Here,we investigated contents and form of Ag and Zn in 57 nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats,pacifiers,and teethers of seven countries and examined the impacts of steam disinfection on in vitro bioaccessibility(IVBA)of Ag and Zn in the articles.Nearly 89%articles had a mixture of Ag-and Zn-containing NPs and the teethers had relatively high Ag and Zn contents(up to 501 and 254μg/g,respectively).Steam disinfection caused rubber decomposition into micro(nano)plastics(0.54-15.7μm)and NP release from the interior of bulk rubber and micro-sized plastics,thus enhancing the IVBA of Ag and Zn by up to 5.5 times.The findings provide insights into mechanisms for NP release by steam disinfection.Though oral exposure risk assessment suggested low health concerns on individual metal release,our study points out the need to assess the potential health risks of child co-exposure to metallic NPs and micro(nano)plastics.

The Orthopoxvirus genus,especially variola virus(VARV),monkeypox virus(MPXV),remains a significant public health threat worldwide.The development of therapeutic antibodies against orthopoxviruses is largely hampered by the high cost of antibody engineering and manufacturing processes.mRNA-encoded antibodies have emerged as a powerful and universal platform for rapid antibody production.Herein,by using the established lipid nanoparticle(LNP)-encapsulated mRNA platform,we constructed four mRNA combinations that encode monoclonal antibodies with broad neutralization activities against orthopoxviruses.In vivo characterization demonstrated that a single intravenous injection of each LNP-encapsulated mRNA antibody in mice resulted in the rapid production of neutralizing antibodies.More importantly,mRNA antibody treatments showed significant protection from weight loss and mortality in the vaccinia virus(VACV)lethal challenge mouse model,and a unique mRNA antibody cocktail,Mix2a,exhibited superior in vivo protection by targeting both intracellular mature virus(IMV)-form and extracellular enveloped virus(EEV)-form viruses.In summary,our results demonstrate the proof-of-concept production of orthopoxvirus antibodies via the LNP-mRNA platform,highlighting the great potential of tailored mRNA antibody combinations as a universal strategy to combat orthopoxvirus as well as otheremerging viruses.

Construction of Naphthalenediimide Lanthanide(Ⅲ)-MOFs and Composites Incorporated Electron-Rich Pyrene Derivative as Multifunctional Fluorescence Sensing for Nitro Aromatic Compounds and Aldehydes

The development of host-guest MOF luminescent composites has attracted considerable attention. However,it is still a challenge to reasonably design large scale conjugated polycarboxylic acids metal-organic framework (MOF) and modulate donor-acceptor interaction. Herein,a series of isostructural 3D porous lanthanide MOF [Ln_(2)(BINDI)0.5(NO_(3))(DMA)(H_(2)O)]∙DMA∙2.5H_(2)O (Ln = La (1),Ce (2),Pr (3) and Nd (4);H_(4)BINDI (N,N’-bis(5-isophthalic acid)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide) were synthesized. Considering the electron-deficient performances of Ln-BINDI MOFs,D-A type composites Ln-MOFs (1—4@H_(4)TBAPy) were prepared via the incorporation of electron-rich H_(4)TBAPy (1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid) pyrene),which more improved the luminescence performance of complexes 1—4 and can be used as fluorescence sensors for the detection of nitro compounds and aldehydes. High sensitivity of 1@H_(4)TBAPy towards pNBA,pNA PNP,DNP,and TNP could be achieved through hydrogen bond interactions between MOF and analytes,as well as the π-π interaction between H_(4)TBAPy and the naphthalene ring of BINDI,thus the fluorescence quenching efficiency of 1@H_(4)TBAPy was better than that of the complex 1. In addition,it is found that 1@H_(4)TBAPy has high selectivity and sensitivity to aromatic aldehyde SA,5-Mesal and HMBA. Such strategy to enhance the emission of NDI based Ln-BINDI MOFs,will open up an avenue to obtain more fluorescent MOFs for sensing.

Robotic versus laparoscopic surgery for sporadic benign insulinoma:Short-and long-term outcomes

Background:Minimally invasive surgery is the optimal treatment for insulinoma.The present study aimed to compare short-and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic and robotic surgery for sporadic benign insulinoma.Methods:A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent laparoscopic or robotic surgery for insulinoma at our center between September 2007 and December 2019 was conducted.The demographic,perioperative and postoperative follow-up results were compared between the laparoscopic and robotic groups.Results:A total of 85 patients were enrolled,including 36 with laparoscopic approach and 49 with robotic approach.Enucleation was the preferred surgical procedure.Fifty-nine patients(69.4%)underwent enucleation;among them,26 and 33 patients underwent laparoscopic and robotic surgery,respectively.Robotic enucleation had a lower conversion rate to laparotomy(0 vs.19.2%,P=0.013),shorter operative time(102.0 vs.145.5 min,P=0.008)and shorter postoperative hospital stay(6.0 vs.8.5 d,P=0.002)than laparoscopic enucleation.There were no differences between the groups in terms of intraoperative blood loss,the rates of postoperative pancreatic fistula and complications.After a median follow-up of 65 months,two patients in the laparoscopic group developed a functional recurrence and none of the patients in the robotic group had a recurrence.Conclusions:Robotic enucleation can reduce the conversion rate to laparotomy and shorten operative time,which might lead to a reduction in postoperative hospital stay.

Pure red cell aplasia(PRCA)is a bone marrow failure syndrome characterized by severe anemia,reticulocytopenia,selective reduction,and even the absence of bone marrow erythroid precursors,while leukocyte and platelet counts are normal.1 Acquired PRCA can be divided into primary and secondary.Both are mediated by immune responses.Reduction in the quantity and dysfunction of committed erythroid progenitors(EPs),including burst forming uniterythroid(BFU-E)and colony forming unit-erythroid(CFU-E),may be the source of reduced erythropoiesis and needs to be elucidated.

Although the performance of perovskite solar cells(PSCs)has been dramatically increased in recent years,stability is still the main obstacle preventing the PSCs from being commercial.PSC device instability can be caused by a variety of reasons,including ions diffusion,surface and grain boundary defects,etc.In this work,the cross-linkable tannic acid(TA)is introduced to modify perovskite film through post-treatment method.The numerous organic functional groups(–OH and C=O)in TA can interact with the uncoordinated Pb^(2+)and I^(-)ions in perovskite,thus passivating defects and inhibiting ions diffusion.In addition,the formed TA network can absorb a small amount of the residual moisture inside the device to protect the perovskite layer.Furthermore,TA modification regulates the energy level of perovskite,and reduces interfacial charge recombination.Ultimately,following TA treatment,the device efficiency is increased significantly from 21.31%to 23.11%,with a decreased hysteresis effect.Notably,the treated device shows excellent air,thermal,and operational stability.In light of this,the readily available,inexpensive TA has the potential to operate as a multipurpose interfacial modifier to increase device efficiency while also enhancing device stability.

Computed tomography radiomic features and clinical factors predicting the response to first transarterial chemoembolization in intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma

Background:According to clinical practice guidelines,transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)is the standard treatment modality for patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Early prediction of treatment response can help patients choose a reasonable treatment plan.This study aimed to investigate the value of the radiomic-clinical model in predicting the efficacy of the first TACE treatment for HCC to prolong patient survival.Methods:A total of 164 patients with HCC who underwent the first TACE from January 2017 to September 2021 were analyzed.The tumor response was assessed by modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors(mRECIST),and the response of the first TACE to each session and its correlation with overall survival were evaluated.The radiomic signatures associated with the treatment response were identified by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO),and four machine learning models were built with different types of regions of interest(ROIs)(tumor and corresponding tissues)and the model with the best performance was selected.The predictive performance was assessed with receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves and calibration curves.Results:Of all the models,the random forest(RF)model with peritumor(+10 mm)radiomic signatures had the best performance[area under ROC curve(AUC)=0.964 in the training cohort,AUC=0.949 in the validation cohort].The RF model was used to calculate the radiomic score(Rad-score),and the optimal cutoff value(0.34)was calculated according to the Youden’s index.Patients were then divided into a high-risk group(Rad-score>0.34)and a low-risk group(Rad-score≤0.34),and a nomogram model was successfully established to predict treatment response.The predicted treatment response also allowed for significant discrimination of Kaplan-Meier curves.Multivariate Cox regression identified six independent prognostic factors for overall survival,including male[hazard ratio(HR)=0.500,95%confidence interval(CI):0.260–0.962,P=0.038],alpha-fetoprotein(HR=

Nomogram prediction of vessels encapsulating tumor clusters in small hepatocellular carcinoma≤3 cm based on enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND Vessels encapsulating tumor clusters(VETC)represent a recently discovered vascular pattern associated with novel metastasis mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).However,it seems that no one have focused on predicting VETC status in small HCC(sHCC).This study aimed to develop a new nomogram for predicting VETC positivity using preoperative clinical data and image features in sHCC(≤3 cm)patients.AIM To construct a nomogram that combines preoperative clinical parameters and image features to predict patterns of VETC and evaluate the prognosis of sHCC patients.METHODS A total of 309 patients with sHCC,who underwent segmental resection and had their VETC status confirmed,were included in the study.These patients were recruited from three different hospitals:Hospital 1 contributed 177 patients for the training set,Hospital 2 provided 78 patients for the test set,and Hospital 3 provided 54 patients for the validation set.Independent predictors of VETC were identified through univariate and multivariate logistic analyses.These independent predictors were then used to construct a VETC prediction model for sHCC.The model’s performance was evaluated using the area under the curve(AUC),calibration curve,and clinical decision curve.Additionally,Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to confirm whether the predicted VETC status by the model is associated with early recurrence,just as it is with the actual VETC status and early recurrence.RESULTS Alpha-fetoprotein_lg10,carbohydrate antigen 199,irregular shape,non-smooth margin,and arterial peritumoral enhancement were identified as independent predictors of VETC.The model incorporating these predictors demonstrated strong predictive performance.The AUC was 0.811 for the training set,0.800 for the test set,and 0.791 for the validation set.The calibration curve indicated that the predicted probability was consistent with the actual VETC status in all three sets.Furthermore,the decision curve analysis demonstrated the clinical benefits of our model for pati
