Hierarchical highly ordered SnO_(2) nanobowl branched ZnO nanowires for ultrasensitive and selective hydrogen sulfide gas sensing

Highly sensitive and selective hydrogen sulfide(H_(2)S)sensors based on hierarchical highly ordered SnO_(2) nanobowl branched ZnO nanowires(NWs)were synthesized via a sequential process combining hard template processing,atomic-layer deposition,and hydrothermal processing.The hierarchical sensing materials were prepared in situ on microelectromechanical systems,which are expected to achieve high-performance gas sensors with superior sensitivity,long-term stability and repeatability,as well as low power consumption.Specifically,the hierarchical nanobowl SnO_(2)@ZnO NW sensor displayed a high sensitivity of 6.24,a fast response and recovery speed(i.e.,14 s and 39 s,respectively),and an excellent selectivity when detecting 1 ppm H_(2)S at 250°C,whose rate of resistance change(i.e.,5.24)is 2.6 times higher than that of the pristine SnO_(2) nanobowl sensor.The improved sensing performance could be attributed to the increased specific surface area,the formation of heterojunctions and homojunctions,as well as the additional reaction between ZnO and H_(2)S,which were confirmed by electrochemical characterization and band alignment analysis.Moreover,the well-structured hierarchical sensors maintained stable performance after a month,suggesting excellent stability and repeatability.In summary,such well-designed hierarchical highly ordered nanobowl SnO_(2)@ZnO NW gas sensors demonstrate favorable potential for enhanced sensitive and selective H_(2)S detection with long-term stability and repeatability.

Enhanced thermoelectric and mechanical properties of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 alloy with dispersed yttrium oxide ceramic nanoparticles

Reducing thermal conductivity while avoiding adverse interfacial reactions during sintering is crucial for improving the thermoelectric performance of Bi2Te3-based composites.Inert ceramic nanoparticles are good candidates for achieving this goal.In this study,we designed and prepared a series of p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3nanocomposites decorated with Y2O3ceramic nanoparticles via ball-milling dispersion and spark-plasma sintering.Owing to the chemical stability of the ceramics,no traces of atomic doping or interfacial reactions were observed.Transport measurements revealed that the Y2O3nanoparticles distributed along the grain boundaries acted as energy-dependent carrier-filtering centers to improve the scattering parameter and Seebeck coefficient,contributing to the elevated power factor even with a decreased electrical conductivity.Moreover,the incorporated Y2O3nanoparticles and various defect structures they induced effectively strengthened the phonon scattering and suppressed the lattice thermal conductivity.Consequently,a peak figure of merit（ZT） of 1.23 at 313 K was achieved for 0.4%Y2O3/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3,which is 13% higher than that of the matrix.In addition,the Vickers hardness of the composite material was 35% higher than that of the matrix.This study demonstrates the effectiveness of ceramic nanoparticles in synergistic ally improving the thermoelectric and mechanical properties,which may be further extended to other thermoelectric systems.

The use of human excrement as fertilizer is a characteristic of traditional Chinese agriculture..The application of excrement from urban residents in agriculture since the Song Dynasty has ensured the cleanliness and hygiene of ancientChinesecities.As early as the ming Dynasty,the Chinese people defined the principle of fertilizing fields with human excrement from the perspective of materialcirculation.The concept Peri-URban ecosystems(PURE)provides inspiration forurban-rural symbiosis regarding circulareconomy.The use of human excrement in fertilization is a major attribute differentiating the Chinese traditional agriculture from the agriculture in other regions around the world.Despite the fact that the exact record showing that human excrement was used as fertilizer in China emerged in the Western Han Dynasty(B.C.202-A.D.8),such records did not become prevalent until the Southern Song Dynasty(A.D.1127-1279).In the ming and Qing eras(A.D.1368-1912),human excrement was even considered"top-class fertilizerand servedas themost essential fertilizerin farmland fertilization.The importance of human excrement in the ming and Qing was mainly reflected by farmers'purchase of human excrement from urban areas.As fertilization practices became increasingly popular during the period,men of letters built a localized theoretical system centering on human excrement.Although the use of human excrement had both positive and negative impacts on public health and the ecological environment,the positive overshadowed the negativeas a whole.Today,it is worth pondering on how the utilization of human excrement as an agricultural resource can be improved so that a material cycle system can be rebuilt to re-connect the urban and rural areas.

Detection and analysis of serum bile acid profile in patients with colonic polyps

BACKGROUND Analyzing the variations in serum bile acid(BA)profile can provide a certain biological basis for early warning and prevention of various diseases.There is currently no comprehensive study on the relationship between the serum BA profile and colonic polyps.AIM To study the serum BA profile detection results of patients with colonic polyps,and analyze the correlation between BA and colonic polyps.METHODS From January 1,2022,to June 1,2023,204 patients with colonic polyps who were diagnosed and treated at Zhongda Hospital Southeast University were chosen as the study subjects,and 135 non-polyp people who underwent physical examination were chosen as the control group.Gathering all patients'clinical information,typical biochemical indicators,and BA profile.RESULTS Compared with the control group,the serum levels of taurocholic acid,glycocholic acid,glycochenodeoxycholic acid,and taurochenodeoxycholic acid in the colonic polyp group were significantly higher than those in the control group,while the content of deoxycholic acid(DCA)was lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).When colonic polyps were analyzed as subgroups,it was shown that there was a strong correlation between changes in the BA profile and polyp diameter,location,morphology,pathological kind,etc.CONCLUSION The serum BA profile showed significant changes in patients with colonic polyps,with a significant increase in primary conjugated BA content and a decrease in secondary free bile acid DCA content.There is a certain correlation between primary free BA and pathological parameters of polyps.

Bone morphogenetic protein-6 suppresses TGF-β_(2)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in retinal pigment epithelium

AIM:To evaluate the effect of bone morphogenetic protein-6(BMP-6)on transforming growth factor(TGF)-β_(2)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)in retinal pigment epithelium(RPE).METHODS:Adult retinal pigment epithelial cell line(ARPE-19)were randomly divided into control,TGF-β_(2)(5μg/L),and BMP-6 small interfering RNA(siRNA)group.The cell morphology was observed by microscopy,and the cell migration ability were detected by Transwell chamber.The EMT-related indexes and BMP-6 protein levels were detected by Western blotting.Furthermore,a BMP-6 overexpression plasmid was constructed and RPE cells were divided into the control group,TGF-β_(2)+empty plasmid group,BMP-6 overexpression group,and TGF-β_(2)+BMP-6 overexpression group.The EMT-related indexes and extracellular regulated protein kinases(ERK)protein levels were detected.RESULTS:Compared with the control group,the migration of RPE cells in the TGF-β_(2) group was significantly enhanced.TGF-β_(2) increased the protein expression levels ofα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA),fibronectin and vimentin but significantly decreased the protein levels of E-cadherin and BMP-6(P<0.05)in RPE.Similarly,the migration of RPE cells in the BMP-6 siRNA group was also significantly enhanced.BMP-6 siRNA increased the protein expression levels ofα-SMA,fibronectin and vimentin but significantly decreased the protein expression levels of E-cadherin(P<0.05).Overexpression of BMP-6 inhibited the migration of RPE cells induced by TGF-β_(2) and prevented TGF-β_(2) from affecting EMT-related biomarkers(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:BMP-6 prevents the EMT in RPE cells induced by TGF-β_(2),which may provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

Effect of inflammatory response on joint function after hip fracture in elderly patients:A clinical study

BACKGROUND Excellent hip joint function facilitates limb recovery and improves the quality of survival.This study aimed to investigate the potential risk factors affecting postoperative joint functional activity and outcomes in elderly hip fractures patients and to provide evidence for patient rehabilitation and clinical management.AIM To explore the relationship between inflammatory factors and hip function and the interaction between inflammation and health after hip fracture in elderly patients.METHODS The elderly patients who had hip fracture surgery at our hospital between January 1,2021,and December 31,2022 were chosen for this retrospective clinical investigation.Patients with excellent and fair postoperative hip function had their clinical information and characteristics gathered and compared.Age,gender,fracture site,surgical technique,laboratory indices,and other variables that could have an impact on postoperative joint function were all included in a univariate study.To further identify independent risk factors affecting postoperative joint function in hip fractures,risk factors that showed statistical significance in the univariate analysis were then included in a multiple logistic regression analysis.In addition to this,we also compared other outcome variables such as visual analogue scale and length of hospital stay between the two groups.RESULTS A total of 119 elderly patients with hip fractures were included in this study,of whom 37 were male and 82 were female.The results of univariate logistic regression analysis after excluding the interaction of various factors showed that there was a statistically significant difference in interleukin(IL)-6,IL-8,IL-10,C-reactive protein(CRP),and complement C1q(C1q)between the fair and excellent joint function groups(P20 pg/mL[Odds ratio(OR)3.070,95%CI:1.243-7.579],IL-8>21.4 pg/mL(OR 3.827,95%CI:1.498-9.773),CRP>10 mg/L(OR 2.142,95%CI:1.020-4.498)and C1q>233 mg/L(OR 2.339,95%CI:1.094-

A molecular insight into coke formation process of vacuum residue in thermal cracking reaction

Understanding the coking behaviors has been considered to be really essential for developing better vacuum residue processing technologies. A battery of thermal cracking tests of typical vacuum residue at410°C with various reaction time were performed to evaluate the coke formation process. The total yields of ideal components including naphtha, atmospheric gas oil(AGO) and vacuum gas oil(VGO) of thermal cracking reactions increased from 10.89% to 40.81%, and the conversion ratios increased from8.05% to 43.33% with increasing the reaction time from 10 to 70 min. The asphaltene content increased from 12.14% to a maximum of 22.39% and then decreased, and this maximum of asphaltene content occurred at the end of the coking induction period. The asphaltenes during the coking induction period,at the end and after coking induction period of those tested thermal cracking reactions were characterized to disclose the structure changing rules for coke formation process, and the coke formation pathways were discussed to reveal the coke formation process at molecular level.

Threshold Selection and Resource Allocation for Quantized Identification

This paper is concerned with the optimal threshold selection and resource allocation problems of quantized identification, whose aims are improving identification efficiency under limited resources. Firstly, the first-order asymptotically optimal quantized identification theory is extended to the weak persistent excitation condition. Secondly, the characteristics of time and space complexities are established based on the Cramér-Rao lower bound of quantized systems. On these basis, the optimal selection methods of fixed thresholds and adaptive thresholds are established under aperiodic signals, which answer how to achieve the best efficiency of quantized identification under the same time and space complexity. In addition, based on the principle of maximizing the identification efficiency under a given resource, the optimal resource allocation methods of quantized identification are given for the cases of fixed thresholds and adaptive thresholds, respectively, which show how to balance time and space complexity to realize the best identification efficiency of quantized identification.

Research on ozone formation sensitivity based on observational methods:Development history,methodology,and application and prospects in China

Observation-based method for O_(3)formation sensitivity research is an important tool to analyze the causes of ground-level O_(3)pollution,which has broad application potentials in determining the O_(3)pollution formation mechanism and developing prevention and control strategies.This paper outlined the development history of research on O_(3)formation sensitivity based on observational methods,described the principle and applicability of the methodology,summarized the relative application results in China and provided recommendations on the prevention and control of O_(3)pollution in China based on relevant study results,and finally pointed out the shortcomings and future development prospects in this field in China.The overview study showed that the O_(3)formation sensitivity in some urban areas in China in recent years presented a gradual shifting tendency from the VOC-limited regime to the transition regime or the NO_(x)-limited regime due to the implementation of the O_(3)precursors emission reduction policies;O_(3)pollution control strategies and precursor control countermeasures should be formulated based on local conditions and the dynamic control capability of O_(3)pollution control measures should be improved.There are still some current deficiencies in the study field in China.Therefore,it is recommended that a stereoscopic monitoring network for atmospheric photochemical components should be further constructed and improved;the atmospheric chemical mechanisms should be vigorously developed,and standardized methods for determining the O_(3)formation sensitivity should be established in China in the near future.

Steam disinfection enhances bioaccessibility of metallic nanoparticles in nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats,pacifiers,and teethers

Nano-enabled silicone-rubber articles for feeding or chewing could be a source of metallic nanoparticles(NPs)directly exposed to infants and young children.However,the impact of steam disinfection on release of NPs and the related potential risks to children's health are unknown.Here,we investigated contents and form of Ag and Zn in 57 nano-enabled silicone-rubber baby bottle teats,pacifiers,and teethers of seven countries and examined the impacts of steam disinfection on in vitro bioaccessibility(IVBA)of Ag and Zn in the articles.Nearly 89%articles had a mixture of Ag-and Zn-containing NPs and the teethers had relatively high Ag and Zn contents(up to 501 and 254μg/g,respectively).Steam disinfection caused rubber decomposition into micro(nano)plastics(0.54-15.7μm)and NP release from the interior of bulk rubber and micro-sized plastics,thus enhancing the IVBA of Ag and Zn by up to 5.5 times.The findings provide insights into mechanisms for NP release by steam disinfection.Though oral exposure risk assessment suggested low health concerns on individual metal release,our study points out the need to assess the potential health risks of child co-exposure to metallic NPs and micro(nano)plastics.
