Adult male tree shrews vigorously defend against intruding male conspecifics. However, the characteristics of social behavior have not been entirely explored in these males. In this study, male wild-type tree shrews(Tupaia belangeri chinensis)and C57 BL/6 J mice were first allowed to familiarize themselves with an open-field apparatus. The tree shrews exhibited a short duration of movement(moving) in the novel environment, whereas the mice exhibited a long duration of movement. In the 30 min social preference-avoidance test, target animals significantly decreased the time spent by the experimental tree shrews in the social interaction(SI)zone, whereas experimental male mice exhibited the opposite. In addition, experimental tree shrews displayed a significantly longer latency to enter the SI zone in the second 15 min session(targetpresent) than in the first 15 min session(targetabsent), which was different from that found in *** behavioral patterns in response to a conspecific male were also observed in male tree shrews and mice in the first, second, and third 5 min periods. Thus, social behaviors in tree shrews and mice appeared to be time dependent. In summary,our study provides results of a modified social preference-avoidance test designed for the assessment of social behavior in tree shrews. Our findings demonstrate the existence of social avoidance behavior in male tree shrews and prosocial behavior in male mice toward unfamiliar conspecifics. The tree shrew may be a new animal model, which differs from mice, for the study of social avoidance and prosocial behaviors.

In arid and semi-arid sand dune ecosystems,belowground bud bank plays an important role in population regeneration and vegetation ***,the responses of belowground bud bank size and composition to sand burial and its induced changes in soil environmental factors have been rarely *** arid sand dunes of Northwestern China,we investigated belowground bud bank size and composition of the typical rhizomatous psammophyte Psammochloa villosa as well as three key soil environmental factors(soil moisture,total carbon and total nitrogen)under different depths of sand *** buds and rhizome buds increased significantly with increasing burial depth,whereas tiller buds first increased and then decreased,with a peak value at the depth of 20-30 *** moisture increased significantly with sand burial depth,and was positively correlated with the number of all buds and rhizome *** total carbon concentration first increased and then decreased with sand burial depth,and total nitrogen concentration was significantly lower under deep sand burial than those at shallow depths,and only the number of tiller buds was positively correlated with soil total nitrogen *** results indicate that soil moisture rather than soil nutrient might regulate the belowground bud bank of ***,and that clonal psammophytes could regulate their belowground bud bank in response to sand burial and the most important environmental stress(i.e.,soil moisture).These responses,as the key adaptive strategy,may ensure clonal plant population regeneration and vegetation restoration in arid sand dunes.

Wheat awns contribute to photosynthesis and grain *** this study,an F2population and F2:3families from a cross between the awned line 7D12 and the Chinese awnless variety Shiyou 20(SY20)were used to identify loci associated with awn ***-segregant RNA sequencing and linkage mapping identified a single dominant locus in a 0.3 cM interval on chromosome *** genes were in the interval,including the recently cloned awn inhibitor *** a single copy of the B1 gene was detected in 7D12,SY20 carried five copies of the *** copy number of B1 in SY20enhanced gene *** on sequence variation among the promoter regions of five B1 gene copies in SY20,two dominant markers were developed and found to cosegregate with B1 in a population of 931 wheat *** 77 awnless accessions harbored sequence variations in the B1 promoter regions similar to those of SY20 and thus carried multiple copies of the gene,whereas 15 randomly selected awned wheats carried only one *** results suggest that an increase in copy number of the B1 gene is associated with inhibition of awn length.

A multifunctional drug delivery system（GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD） was developed by conjugating targeting ligand hyaluronic acid（HA） and RGD with mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods（GNRs@mSiO_2） for dual-targeted chemo-photothermal therapy. The physiochemical properties of the prepared nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, UV-vis spectra, and ~1H NMR. Doxorubicin hydrochloride（DOX）, an anticancer drug, was used as the model drug to investigate the drug loading, in vitro drug release profiles and cytotoxicity. The experimental results show that DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD is synthesized with a mean diameter of 116 nm and a sufficient load capacity of about 19.8%. It also has p H-enzyme sensitive and NIRtriggered drug release manner. Cellular uptake indicates that DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD exhibits a higher cellular uptake via CD44 receptor and integrin receptor mediated endocytosis compared with the GNRs@mSiO_2 modified with one receptor or no receptor. In comparison with chemotherapy or photothermal therapy alone, DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD displayes the synergistic effects and achieves a higher therapeutic efficacy. It can be expected that DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD is a potential dual-targeted chemo-photothermal therapeutic platform for effective cancer treatment.

The WNW-ESE-trending Baiyunshan ophiolitic mélange is exposed in the central Beishan orogenic belt(BOB),between the Hongliuhe-Niujuanzi and Xichangjing ophiolitic mélanges in the west and east,*** we present new petrological,geochemical,and zircon U-Pb age data for the Baiyunshan ophiolitic mélange and metamorphosed lithic sandstones of“the Baiyunshan Formation”.The Baiyunshan ophiolitic mélange is characterized by a block-in-matrix structure,and the blocks of ultramafic-mafic rocks are mainly pyroxenites,dunites,gabbros,and minor *** U-Pb dating yielded an emplacement age of 424.2±3.7 ma for the *** ultramaficmafic rocks have geochemical features of supra-subduction zone-type ophiolites,including low Ti contents(TiO2=0.01 wt.%–0.35 wt.%),negative Nb-Ta anomalies,and U-shaped rare earth element patterns with positive Eu anomalies(δEu=0.99–3.25).“The Baiyunshan Formation”is exposed to the north of the ophiolitic mélange,and comprises mainly meta-cherts in its lower part and metasandstones and marbles in its upper *** of basalt are locally dispersed in the sand-slate *** ages of detrital zircons in the metamorphosed lithic sandstones range from 521 to 464 ma,with an age peak of 500 ma,which is similar to those of the Gongpoquan arc in the *** central Beishan orogenic belt experienced continuous subduction of the Hongliuhe-Xichangjing oceanic lithosphere in the Late Silurian,which produced the Baiyunshan forearc complex and supra-subduction zone-type ophiolite.

Symbiosis between soybean and rhizobia contributes to soybean yield and quality. Although secreted rhizobial type Ⅲ effectors are known to regulate infection and promote nitrogen fixation, much about them remains unknown. Mutation of NopC, a type Ⅲ effector from Sinorhizobium fredii HH103, reduced nodule numbers and dry weights in 310 soybean accessions, and expression of NopC in soybean hairy roots promoted symbiosis. Based on observed differences in nodule traits between Suinong 14 and Zyd 00,006inoculated with HH103 and the NopC mutant, 11 QTL associated with rhizobia were identified in chromosome segment substitution lines(CSSLs) derived from Suinong 14 and Zyd 00006. Using chromosome fragment insertion, whole-genome sequencing of Suinong 14 and Zyd 00006, and qRT-PCR,Glyma.19G176300(GmCRP) was identified as a candidate gene associated with NopC, and GmCRP was found to be induced by NopC to positively regulate nodulation. SNPs located in the regulatory regions of GmCRP influenced its expression response to NopC, with SNPs contributing to nodulation having been selected during domestication. Our findings reveal the function of a soybean gene encoding a rhizobial type Ⅲ effector that contributes to symbiosis, and will facilitate the practical application of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in molecular breeding.

AIM: To elucidate the potential biological role of mi R-30 b in gastric cancer and investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of mi R-30 b to inhibit metastasis of gastric cancer ***: The expression of mi R-30 b was detected in gastric cancer cell lines and samples by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. CCK-8 assays were conducted to explore the impact of mi R-30 b overexpression on the proliferation of gastric cancer cells. Flow cytometry was used to examine the effect of mi R-30 b on the apoptosis. Transwell test was used for the migration and invasion assays. Luciferase reporter assays and Western blot were employed to validate regulation of putative target of mi R-30 ***: The results showed that mi R-30 b was downregulated in gastric cancer tissues and cancer cell lines and functioned as a tumor suppressor. Overexpression of mi R-30 b promoted cell apoptosis,and suppressed proliferation,migration and invasion of the gastric cancer cell lines AGS and MGC803. Bioinformatic analysis identified the 3'-untranslated region of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A2(EIF5A2) as a putative binding site of mi R-30 b. Luciferase reporter assays and Western blot analysis confirmed the EIF5A2 gene as a target of mi R-30 b. Moreover,expression levels of theEIF5A2 targets E-cadherin and Vimentin were altered following transfection of mi R-30 b ***: Our findings describe a link between mi R-30 b and EIF5A2,which plays an important role in mediating epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

Improved simulation of carbon and water fluxes by assimilating multi-layer soil temperature and moisture into process-based biogeochemical model

Background: Soil temperature and moisture are sensitive indicators in soil organic matter decomposition because they control global carbon and water cycles and their potential feedback to climatic variations. Although the Biome-Biogeochemical Cycles (Biome-BGC) model is broadly applied in simulating forest carbon and water fluxes, its single-layer soil module cannot represent vertical variations in soil moisture. This study introduces the Biome-BGC MuSo model, which is composed of a multi-layer soil module and new modules pertaining to phenology and management for simulations of carbon and water fluxes. Although this model considers soil processes among active layers, estimates of soil-related variables might be biased, leading to inaccurate estimates of carbon and water fluxes. Methods: To improve the estimations of soil-related processes in Biome-BGC MuSo, this study assimilates ground-measured multi-layer daily soil temperature and moisture at the Changbai Mountains forest flux site by using the Ensemble Kalman Filter algorithm. The modeled estimates of water and carbon fluxes were evaluated with measurements using determination coefficient (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE). The differences in the RMSEs from Biome-BGC MuSo and the assimilated Biome-BGC MuSo were calculated (ΔRMSE), and the relationships between ΔRMSE and the climatic and biophysical factors were analyzed. Results: Compared with the original Biome-BGC model, Biome-BGC MuSo improved the simulations of ecosystem respiration (ER), net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and evapotranspiration (ET). Data assimilation of the soil-related variables into Biome-BGC MuSo in real time improved the accuracies of the simulated carbon and water fluxes (ET: R^2=0.81, RMSE=0.70 mm·d^-1;ER: R^2=0.85, RMSE=1.97 gC·m^-2·d^-1;NEE: R^2=0.70, RMSE=1.16 gC·m^-2·d^-1).
