depressive disorders are recognized as one of the most common mental health conditions across different age ***,the risk factors associated with depression among older people from low-and middle-income countries remains *** study aims to identify socio-demographic,health and psychosocial-related factors associated with depression in Chilean older adults.A cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of 1,765 adults aged≥60 years participants from the Chilean National Health Survey 2016–***-sion was assessed with the Composite International diagnostic Interview(CIdI-SF).Associations between the exposure variables and depression were investigated using Poisson regression *** mainﬁndings indi-cated that women showed higher likelihood of depression than men(Prevalence Ratio(PR)=2.6[95%CI:1.40;4.89]).An increased likelihood of depression was found in older adults with chronic pain,multimorbidity(≥2 diseases),previous diagnose of depression,high perception of stress,ﬁnancial stress,and difﬁculties for social *** women,higher likelihood of depression was found for those with the frailty phenotype(PR:8.53[95%CI:1.68;43.32]),rheumatoid arthritis(PR:2.41[95%CI:1.34;4.34]),insomnia(PR:2.99[95%CI:1.74;5.12])and low self-rated well-being(PR:4.94[95%CI:2.26;10.79]).Men who were divorced(PR:7.10[95%CI:1.44;34.90])or widowed(PR:10.83[95%CI:3.71;31.58]),obese(PR:5.08[95%CI:1.48;17.42])and who had asthma(PR:7.60[95%CI:2.31;24.99])were associated with higher odds of *** currentﬁndings may have clinical implications for the early identiﬁcation of older adults more susceptible to depression and also suggest the need to implement cultural and age-sensitive strategies to promote mental health in late life.

The ILux^(®) compared to the mechanical meibomian gland expression for the treatment of moderate and severe meibomian gland dysfunction

A pilot prospective prevalence study of chronic rhinosinusitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease

Evolutionary implications of deception in mimicry and masquerade

Aggressive mimicry occurs when an organism resembles some aspect of another organism (the model) in order to obtain prey through its deceptive resemblance. This may function either through the overt response of the receiver or through the lack of response of the receiver. Reviewing selected examples, I discuss some of the difficulties in ascribing a model for the mimic. I also discuss how a single animal can have multiple ploys in its armoury of deceptive signals, thus belonging within two or more categories of deceptive signalling. In addition to aggressive mimicry, these may include crypsis or camouflage, masquerade (mimicry of inanimate objects), and Batesian or protective mimicry. Each of these examples of deception has multiple evolutionary pathways, and some deceptive signals may be more costly to receivers than others, but no single organism is subject to a single selection pressure, leading to the reality that many evolutionary pathways contribute to the diversity we see around us. New technologies are opening new channels of investigation into deceptive signaling in many different sensory modalities, and this is reflected in the recent increase in studies investigating the structure and function of deceptive signals. In turn, these studies are beginning to expose the fascinating complexity of deceptive signaling systems, allowing us to discover the myriad, non-mutually exclusive, solutions that can be selected for to obtain prey.

It seems intuitively sensible that an understanding of the behavioral characteristics of animals, such as their home ranges, diets, mating systems, and dispersal mechanisms, may be useful to inform conservation efforts in determining, for example, suitable reintroduction areas,or the design of dispersal corridors. Behavioral work can also determine the importance of a species within its habitat, for example as a seed disperser, and can highlight which extant species may play fundamental ecological roles, especially in areas where recent extinctions have led to drastic changes in biological composition (e.g., Young et al., 2012). So why is it that these two disciplines rarely merge, despite now being the discipline of Conservation Behavior in its own right? This disconnect and where it occurs has been identified by Palestis(2014), and multiple times by Caro (e.g., 1999,2007), whom contribute to this special column. Both Palestis (2014) and Caro (2007) suggest that behavioral ecologists have been “slow to link with conservation biologists” (Palestis, 2014).

Vocal repertoire of the New Zealand kea parrot Nestor notabilis

The unique alpine-living kea parrotNestor notabilishas been the focus of numerous cognitive studies, but its communication system has so far been largely neglected. We examined 2,884 calls recorded in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Based on audio and visual spectrographic differences, these calls were categorised into seven distinct call types: the non-oscillating ‘screech’ contact call and ‘mew’; and the oscillating ‘trill’, ‘chatter’, ‘warble’ and ‘whistle’; and a hybrid ‘screech-trill’. Most of these calls contained aspects that were individually unique, in addition to potentially encoding for an individual’s sex and age. Additionally, for each recording, the sender’s previous and next calls were noted, as well as any response given by conspecifics. We found that the previous and next calls made by the sender were most often of the same type, and that the next most likely preceding and/or following call type was the screech call, a contact call which sounds like the ‘kee-ah’ from which the bird’s name derives. As a social bird capable of covering large distances over visually obstructive terrain, long distance contact calls may be of considerable importance for social cohesion. Contact calls allow kea to locate conspecifics and congregate in temporary groups for social activities. The most likely response to any given call was a screech, usually followed by the same type of call as the initial call made by the sender, although responses differed depending on the age of the caller. The exception was the warble, the kea’s play call, to which the most likely response was another warble. Being the most common call type, as well as the default response to another call, it appears that the ‘contagious’ screech contact call plays a central role in kea vocal communication and social cohesion.

Geothermal diatoms: Seasonal Variability in the El Tatio Geothermal Field (Altiplano, Chile)

diatom floras were examined in a high-altitude geothermal field, 4200 - 4500 m (29°19'S 68°W'), located in the Central Andean dry Puna ecoregion or southern Altiplano. These locations include hostile environments subjecting living organisms to extreme conditions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the spatial patterns and describe the response of diatom assemblages to differences in physical and chemical variables. different shallow (Achnanthidium exiguum (Grunow) Czarnecki, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata (Ehrenberg) Van Heurck, Eolimna minima (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot, Staurosirella pinnata (Ehrenberg) Williams and Round, Navicula gregaria donkin, Nitzschia inconspicua Grunow, Nitzschia palea (Kützing) Smith, Nitzschia perminuta (Grunow) Peragallo, and Planothidium lanceolatum (Brébisson ex Kützing) Lange-Bertalot. As expected, the 20 to 200 μm-size fraction contained the highest numbers of diatom taxa (53 species), although an unexpectedly high number (47 species) were also found in the smaller 5 to 20 μm-size fraction, more associated to fumaroles and saline systems. The 180 to 2000 μm size fraction contained only two species, including rosette-forming diatom Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère, and the unicellular species Surirella chilensis Janisch, both species exclusively reported in freshwater systems. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and Monte Carlo permutation tests showed clear correlations between species, conductivity, TP (total phosphorous), NO3- , HO3- , Mg2+, temperature and dissolved oxygen (dO). The gradient of ionic composition values explaining most variation in diatom assemblages ranged from waters dominated by Ca2+ and SO4- to waters with higher proportions of Na+, K+, F-, Li+, Mg2+ and Cl-. Other factors include substrate type, presence of macrophytes, current velocity and other local environmental conditions.
