Magmatic-tectonic response of the South China Craton to the Paleo-Pacific subduction during the Triassic:a new viewpoint based on Well NK-1

The Nansha Block(NB)is one of the blocks separated from the southern margin of the South China Craton(SCC)by the western Pacific subduction,which contains rich information of geodynamic and tectonic transformation.To reveal the essence of western Paleo-Pacific subduction during the Triassic period,Well NK-1 in this block was selected for petrographic study,and published research data from other cooperative teams were compared.A double-cycle pattern of basic to neutral magmatic volcanism was established,and 36 lithological rhythmic layers and representative cryptoexplosive breccia facies and welded tuff bands were identified.Combined with a reanalysis of published geochronological data,geochemical elements,and isotope geochemistry,we found that the rock assemblages could be divided into an intermediate-acid dacite(DA)series(SiO_(2)>65%)and basaltic(BA)series(Co<40μg/g),which was formed during the early Late Triassic((218.6±3.2)–(217.9±3.5)Ma).BA exhibits obvious calc-alkaline island-arc magmatic properties:(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr)_i ratio ranging 0.70377–0.71118(average:0.70645),^(147)Sm/^(144)Nd ratio ranging 0.119–0.193(average:0.168),and chondrite-normalized rare earth element(REE)curves being flat,while DA exhibits remarkable characteristics of subducted island-arc andesitic magma:(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr)_i ratio(0.70939–0.71129;average:0.71035),εNd(t)value(-6.2–-4.8;average:-5.6)andε_(Hf)(t)value(-2.9–-1.7,average:-2.2)show obvious crust-mantle mixing characteristics.BA and DA reveal typical characteristics of island-arc magma systems and typeⅡenriched mantle(EM-Ⅱ)magma.BA magma was likely resulted from the process whereby the continental crust frontal accretionary wedge was driven by the Paleo-Pacific slab subduction into the deep and began to melt,resulting in a large amount of melt(fluid)joined the asthenosphere on the side of the continental margin.In contrast,DA magma was likely resulted from the process whereby the plate front was forced to bend with increasing subduction distance,which triggered the upwelling of the

LiMn_(2)O_(4)(LMO)electrochemical lithium-ion pump has gained widespread attention due to its green,high efficiency,and low energy consumption in selectively extracting lithium from brine.However,collapse of crystal structure and loss of lithium extraction capacity caused by Mn dissolution loss limits its industrialized application.Hence,a multifunctional coating was developed by depositing amorphous AlPO_(4)on the surface of LMO using sol-gel method.The characterization and electrochemical performance test provided insights into the mechanism of Li^(+)embedment and de-embedment and revealed that multifunctional AlPO_(4)can reconstruct the physical and chemical state of LMO surface to improve the interface hydrophilicity,promote the transport of Li^(+),strengthen cycle stability.Remarkably,after 20 cycles,the capacity retention rate of 0.5AP-LMO reached 93.6%with only 0.147%Mn dissolution loss.The average Li^(+)release capacity of 0.5AP-LMO//Ag system in simulated brine is 28.77 mg/(g h),which is 90.4%higher than LMO.Encouragingly,even in the more complex Zabuye real brine,0.5AP-LMO//Ag can still maintain excellent lithium extraction performance.These results indicate that the 0.5AP-LMO//Ag lithium-ion pump shows promising potential as a Li^(+)selective extraction system.

Wetting sub-nanochannels via ionic hydration effect for improving charging dynamics

The ionic transport in sub-nanochannels plays a key role in energy storage,yet suffers from a high energy barrier.Wetting sub-nanochannels is crucial to accelerate ionic transport,but the introduction of water is challenging because of the hydrophobic extreme confinement.We propose wetting the channels by the exothermic hydration process of pre-intercalated ions,the effect of which varies distinctly with different ionic hydration structures and energies.Compared to the failed pre-intercalation of SO_(4)^(2-),HSO_(4)^(-) with weak hydration energy results in a marginal effect on the HOMO(Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital)level of water to avoid water splitting during the electrochemical intercalation.Meanwhile,the ability of water introduction is reserved by the initial incomplete dissociation state of HSO_(4)^(-),so the consequent exothermic reionization and hydration processes of the intercalated HSO_(4)^(-) promote the water introduction into sub-nanochannels,finally forming the stable confined water through hydrogen bonding with functional groups.The wetted channels exhibit a significantly enhanced ionic diffusion coef-ficient by~9.4 times.

Carbon uptake by cement in China:Estimation and contribution to carbon neutrality goals

Cement is a widely used construction material globally.Its manufacturing contributes to anthropogenic CO_(2)emissions significantly.However,its alkaline compounds can absorb CO_(2)from the surrounding environment and engage in a carbonation reaction,thereby functioning as a carbon sink.As a major cement producer and consumer,China has an important responsibility to rigorously investigate and accurately account for cement carbon uptake.This study presents a comprehensive analytical model of cement carbon uptake from China,revealing a substantial increase in carbon uptake from 1930 to 2021,peaking at 426.77 Mt CO_(2)(95% Confidence Interval:317.67-874.33 Mt CO_(2))in 2021.The uptake accounts for 8.10% to 45.40% of China’s annual land sink and 2.51% to 4.54% of the global land sink.The cumulative carbon uptake by cement is approximately 7.06 Gt CO_(2)(95%CI:5.22–9.44 Gt CO_(2))during this period,offsetting 50.7% of the total emissions(13.91 Gt CO_(2),95%CI:12.44–17.00 Gt CO_(2))from the cement industry.Notably,cement mortar contributed to most absorption(65.64%).From a life cycle perspective,the service stage of cement materials is the period where the largest CO_(2)sink is formed,accounting for 90.03% of the total.Therefore,the potential for carbon sequestration in cement materials and their waste is enormous.Additionally,the model improves the accuracy of cement carbon accounting,supporting both China and global carbon neutrality assessments.Thus,it is crucial for China to achieve its carbon neutrality goals sooner by prioritizing the environmental benefits of cement materials and wastes,and accelerating the development and commercialization of CO_(2)sequestration technologies for cement and its by-products.

NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1(NQO1)is a flavin protease highly expressed in various cancer cells.NQO1 catalyzes a futile redox cycle in substrates,leading to substantial reactive oxygen species(ROS)production.This ROS generation results in extensive DNA damage and elevated poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase 1(PARP1)-mediated consumption of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NAD^(+)),ultimately causing cell death.Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase(NAMPT),the rate-limiting enzyme in the NAD^(+)salvage synthesis pathway,emerges as a critical target in cancer therapy.The concurrent inhibition of NQO1 and NAMPT triggers hyperactivation of PARP1 and intensive NAD+depletion.In this study,we designed,synthesized,and assessed a novel series of proqodine A derivatives targeting both NQO1 and NAMPT.Among these,compound T8 demonstrated potent antitumor properties.Specifically,T8 selectively inhibited the proliferation of MCF-7 cells and induced apoptosis through mechanisms dependent on both NQO1 and NAMPT.This discovery offers a promising new molecular entity for advancing anticancer research.

Neutrophils are mobilized and recruited to the injured heart after myocardial infarction,and neutrophil count has been clinically implicated to be associated with coronary disease severity.Histidine decarboxylase(HDC)has been implicated in regulating reactive oxidative species(ROS)and the differentiation of myeloid cells.However,the effect of HDC on neutrophils after myocardial infarction remains unclear.Here,we found that neutrophils were disorderly recruited into the ischemic injured area of the myocardium of Hdc deficiency(Hdc^(−/−))mice.Moreover,Hdc deficiency led to attenuated adhesion but enhanced migration and augmented ROS/neutrophil extracellular traps(NETs)production in neutrophils.Hdc^(−/−)mouse-derived NETs promoted cardiomyocyte death and cardiac fibroblast proliferation/migration.Furthermore,protein arginine methyltransferase 1(PRMT1)was increased in Hdc^(−/−)mouse-derived neutrophils but decreased with exogenous histamine treatment.Its expression could be rescued by blocking histamine receptor 1(H1R),inhibiting ATP synthesis or reducing SWItch/sucrose non fermentable(SWI/SNF)chromatin remodeling complex.Accordingly,histamine or MS023 treatment could decrease ROS and NETs ex vivo,and ameliorated cardiac function and fibrosis,along with the reduced NETs in plasma in vivo.Together,our findings unveil the role of HDC in NETosis by histamine–H1R–ATP–SWI/SNF–PRMT1–ROS signaling and provide new biomarkers and targets for identifying and tuning the detrimental immune state in cardiovascular disease.

Bone mass is a key determinant of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.Epidemiologic studies have shown that a 10%increase in peak bone mass(PBM)at the population level reduces the risk of fracture later in life by 50%.Low PBM is possibly due to the bone loss caused by various conditions or processes that occur during adolescence and young adulthood.Race,gender,and family history(genetics)are responsible for the majority of PBM,but other factors,such as physical activity,calcium and vitamin D intake,weight,smoking and alcohol consumption,socioeconomic status,age at menarche,and other secondary causes(diseases and medications),play important roles in PBM gain during childhood and adolescence.Hence,the optimization of lifestyle factors that affect PBM and bone strength is an important strategy to maximize PBM among adolescents and young people,and thus to reduce the low bone mass or osteoporosis risk in later life.This review aims to summarize the available evidence for the common but important factors that influence bone mass gain during growth and development and discuss the advances of developing high PBM.

Long-chain n-alkanols and n-alkanes in core sediments from the northern South China Sea(SCS)were measured to make a comparison during terrestrial vegetation reconstruction from~42 ka to~7 ka.The results showed that terrestrial vegetation record from long-chain n-alkanes matched well with previous studies in nearby cores,showing that more C_(4)plants developed during the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM)and C_(3)plants dominated in the interglacial period.However,these scenarios were not revealed by terrestrial vegetation reconstruction using long-chain n-alkanols,which showed C_(3)plant expansion during the LGM.The discrepancy during the interglacial period could be attributed to the aerobic degradation of functionalized long-chain n-alkanols in the oxygen-rich bottom water,resulting in poor preservation of terrestrial vegetation signals.On the other hand,the different advantages of functionalized n-alkanols and non-functional n-alkanes to record local and distal vegetation signals,respectively,may offer a potential explanation for the contradiction during the LGM when the SCS was characterized by low-oxygen deep water.Nevertheless,large variations on n-alkyl lipid compositions in C_(3)/C_(4)plants could play a part in modulating sedimentary long-chain n-alkanols and n-alkanes toward different vegetation signals,thereby suggesting that caution must be taken in respect to the terrestrial vegetation reconstruction using long-chain n-alkanes and long-chain n-alkanols.

Twelve years of GWAS discoveries for osteoporosis and related traits: advances, challenges and applications

Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease,affecting-200 million people around the world.As a complex disease,osteoporosis is influenced by many factors,including diet(e.***.calcium and protein intake),physical activity,endocrine status,coexisting diseases and genetic factors.In this review,we first summarize the discovery from genome-wide association studies(GWASs)in the bone field in the last 12 years.To date,GWASs and meta-analyses have discovered hundreds of loci that are associated with bone mineral density(BMD),osteoporosis,and osteoporotic fractures.However,the GWAS approach has sometimes been criticized because of the small effect size of the discovered variants and the mystery of missing heritability,these two questions could be partially explained by the newly raised conceptual models,such as omnigenic model and natural selection.Finally,we introduce the clinical use of GWAS findings in the bone field,such as the identification of causal clinical risk factors,the development of drug targets and disease prediction.Despite the fruitful GWAS discoveries in the bone field,most of these GWAS participants were of European descent,and more genetic studies should be carried out in other ethnic populations to benefit disease prediction in the corresponding population.
