Energy storage for black start services:A review

With the increasing deployment of renewable energy-based power generation plants,the power system is becoming increasingly vulnerable due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy,and a blackout can be the worst scenario.The current auxiliary generators must be upgraded to energy sources with substantially high power and storage capacity,a short response time,good profitability,and minimal environmental concern.Difficulties in the power restoration of renewable energy generators should also be addressed.The different energy storage methods can store and release electrical/thermal/mechanical energy and provide flexibility and stability to the power system.Herein,a review of the use of energy storage methods for black start services is provided,for which little has been discussed in the literature.First,the challenges that impede a stable,environmentally friendly,and cost-effective energy storage-based black start are identified.The energy storagebased black start service may lack supply resilience.Second,the typical energy storage-based black start service,including explanations on its steps and configurations,is introduced.Black start services with different energy storage technologies,including electrochemical,thermal,and electromechanical resources,are compared.Results suggest that hybridization of energy storage technologies should be developed,which mitigates the disadvantages of individual energy storage methods,considering the deployment of energy storage-based black start services.

Various kinds of online social media applications such as Twitter and Weibo,have brought a huge volume of short texts.However,mining semantic topics from short texts efficiently is still a challenging problem because of the sparseness of word-occurrence and the diversity of topics.To address the above problems,we propose a novel supervised pseudo-document-based maximum entropy discrimination latent Dirichlet allocation model(PSLDA for short).Specifically,we first assume that short texts are generated from the normal size latent pseudo documents,and the topic distributions are sampled from the pseudo documents.In this way,the model will reduce the sparseness of word-occurrence and the diversity of topics because it implicitly aggregates short texts to longer and higher-level pseudo documents.To make full use of labeled information in training data,we introduce labels into the model,and further propose a supervised topic model to learn the reasonable distribution of topics.Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method achieves better performance compared with some state-of-the-art methods.

Osteosarcoma(OS)is the most common primary malignant bone tumor that more commonly occurs in children and adolescents.The most commonly used treatment for OS is surgery combined with chemotherapy,but the treatment outcomes are typically unsatisfactory.High rates of metastasis and post-treatment recurrence rates are major challenges in the treatment of OS.This underlines the need for studying the in-depth characterization of the pathogenetic mechanisms of OS and development of more effective therapeutic modalities.Previous studies have demonstrated the important role of the bone microenvironment and the regulation of signaling pathways in the occurrence and development of OS.In this review,we discussed the available evidence pertaining to the mechanisms of OS development and identified therapeutic targets for OS.We also summarized the available treatment modalities for OS and identified future priorities for therapeutics research.

A meaningful learning method for zero-shot semantic segmentation

Zero-shot semantic segmentation, which is developed to segment unseen categories, has attracted increasing attention due to its strong practicability. Previous approaches usually applied semantic-visual mapping based on seen categories to unseen categories, and thus failed to generate meaningful unseen visual representations and struggled to balance the seen and unseen concepts in the classifier. To overcome the above limitations, we propose a novel meaningful learning method that could be embedded into any generationbased zero-shot semantic segmentation model, borrowing the idea from the educational psychology field. The proposed meaningful learning method refers to the process that the new concepts could be learned by relating to existing comprehensible concepts and harmoniously incorporated into the concept schema. Specifically, we introduce a generator with conjugate conceptual correlation(G3C) which generates meaningful unseen visual information through anchoring into existing concepts. Moreover, simulating the rational thinking mechanism,we introduce a fast-slow concept modulator to alleviate the noisy over-correlation problem introduced by G3C and further construct a comprehensive concept schema. Extensive experiments conducted on three benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of our method, especially according to the commonlyacknowledged h-m Io U(e.g., 4% improvement on the Pascal-VOC dataset).

The first enantioselective Beckwith-Enholm cyclization reaction is reported herein.Under cooperative photoredox and chiral hydrogen-bonding catalysis mediated by visible light,cyclization of carbonyls with azaarene-based olefins as a new reaction system offers a general and divergent synthetic pathway to furnish a variety of highly valuable enantioenriched azaarenefunctionalized carbocyclic and heterocyclic alcohols,which bear adjacent 1,2-or nonadjacent 1,3-stereocentres on distinct cyclic frameworks,in high yields and enantio-and diastereoselectivities.The good compatibility of various azaarenes and carbonyls as well as the diversity of cyclic structures of the products underscores the generality of the catalysis platform.In addition to the ability to precisely introduce deuterium into molecules in an enantioselective manner,the considerable synthetic value of this method includes the excellent antioxidant stress potential of the products.In particular,molecule 29 was determined to be a promising lead compound for antioxidant stress drug design.

The problems of stability and stabilization for the discrete Takagi-Sugeno（T-S） fuzzy time-delay system are investigated.By constructing a discrete piecewise Lyapunov-Krasovskii function（PLKF） in each maximal overlapped-rules group（MORG）,a new sufficient stability condition for the open-loop discrete T-S fuzzy time-delay system is proposed and proved.Then the systematic design of the fuzzy controller is investigated via the parallel distributed compensation control scheme,and a new stabilization condition for the closed-loop discrete T-S fuzzy time-delay system is proposed.The above two sufficient conditions only require finding common matrices in each MORG.Compared with the common Lyapunov-Krasovskii function（CLKF） approach and the fuzzy Lyapunov-Krasovskii function（FLKF） approach,these proposed sufficient conditions can not only overcome the defect of finding common matrices in the whole feasible region but also largely reduce the number of linear matrix inequalities to be solved.Finally,simulation examples show that the proposed PLKF approach is effective.

Social tagging systems have attracted plenty of research endeavors recently. The dynamic models of tag generation or tag usage are one of the key subjects of inquiry. However, the existing models do not well explain the ＂staged＂ power-law distribution of tag usage frequencies as observed in various social tagging systems. To cope with this, a new tag-generation model is proposed in this paper, which is based on a preferential selection mechanism influenced by the combinatorial effects of system recommendation and resource multidimensionality. Furthermore, to validate the model, the simulative results under different parameter combinations are compared with the distributions of tag usage frequencies in datasets from three famous social tagging systems, namely ***, Last.fin and Flickr. For different categories of resources of the three systems, three tag usage patterns can be identified, namely the power-law distribution with two plateaus, the power-law distribution with one plateau, and the standard power-law distribution. All the three patterns can be well fitted and explained by the proposed model.

Multimodal Sentiment analysis refers to analyzing emotions in infor-mation carriers containing multiple modalities.To better analyze the features within and between modalities and solve the problem of incomplete multimodal feature fusion,this paper proposes a multimodal sentiment analysis model MIF(Modal Interactive Feature Encoder For Multimodal Sentiment Analysis).First,the global features of three modalities are obtained through unimodal feature extraction networks.Second,the inter-modal interactive feature encoder and the intra-modal interactive feature encoder extract similarity features between modal-ities and intra-modal special features separately.Finally,unimodal special features and the interaction information between modalities are decoded to get the fusion features and predict sentimental polarity results.We conduct extensive experi-ments on three public multimodal datasets,including one in Chinese and two in English.The results show that the performance of our approach is signiﬁcantly improved compared with benchmark models.

What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group?The visible light photosensitizer DPZ.How did you get into this specific field?Could you please share some experiences with our readers?Since I began my postdoctoral work at NUS,chiral hydrogen-bonding catalysis,an important branch of asymmetric organocatalysis,has become the general area of focus of my research.To broaden the applications of this strategy,I proposed to exploit photocatalysis to generate highly reactive radical intermediates,thus overcoming the current limitations in both reaction and substrate types stemming from the low energy of hydrogen-bonding interactions.The development of highly efficient organophotocatalysts and explorations of transition metal-free cooperative photocatalysis and chiral hydrogen-bonding catalysis have therefore been my research focus since 2013.My students and I strive to follow the saying"stick to the research direction,thoroughly understand the scientific challenges,and face those challenges with optimism and determination".
