Applications of M/N/C analogue catalysts in PEM fuel cells and metal-air/oxygen batteries: Status quo, challenges and perspectives

To meet the sharp increase in demand for clean and renewable energy, it is necessary to develop new energyconversion and storage technologies, such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs) and metal-air/oxygen batteries(MABs). Due to the sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction(OER) in the cathodes of PEMFCs and MABs, significant amounts of precious metal catalysts need to be used, driving up the cost of fuel cells and MABs and thereby hindering their commercialization on a large scale. Transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbonaceous catalysts(M/N/C) have high catalytic activity towards the ORR and OER once the catalysts are modified with certain promoters/additives. In addition, M/N/C catalysts can be prepared from abundant, inexpensive materials, making their cost negligible compared with precious metal catalysts, a development that would efficiently decrease the cost of PEMFCs and MABs. In last decade, numerous researchers have attempted to realize these applications of M/N/C catalysts, and some exciting results have been achieved, making these promising replacements for precious metal catalysts.However, some serious problems and significant challenges remain. In this paper, we review the research on the application of M/N/C analogue catalysts in PEMFCs and MABs in the last 10 years, indicate the remaining challenges, and suggest the future research directions.

Circulating endothelial microvesicles and their carried miR-125a 5p:potential biomarkers for ischaemic stroke

Background Endothelial microvesicles(EMVs)are closely associated with the status of endothelial cells(ECs).Our earlier study has shown that EMVs could exert protective roles in ECs by transferring their carried miR-125a 5p.However,whether circulating EMVs and their carried miR-125a 5p can be used as biomarkers in ischaemic stroke(IS)are remain unknown.Methods We recruited 72 subjects with IS,60 subjects with high stroke risk and 56 age-matched controls.The circulating EMVs and their carried miR-125a 5p(EMV-miR 125a 5p)levels were detected.We used microRNA(miR)array to study expression changes of miRs in plasma EMVs samples of three IS patients and three matched healthy controls.Transient middle cerebral artery occlusion(tMCAO)was used to establish IS mouse model.Results EMVs level was obviously elevated in IS patients,with the highest level in acute stage,and was positively related to carotid plaque,carotid intima-media thickness(IMT),National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS),infarct volume.On the contrary,we observed that EMV-miR 125a 5p level was obviously reduced in IS,with the lowest level in acute stage,and was negatively correlated with carotid plaque,IMT,NIHSS scores,infarct volume.EMVs and EMV-miR 125a 5p levels were closely related with large artery atherosclerosis subgroup.Importantly,EMVs and EMV-miR 125a 5p levels could serve as independent risk factors,and receiver operating characteristic curve achieved an area under curve(AUC)of 0.720 and 0.832 for IS,respectively,and elevated to 0.881 after their combination.In IS mouse model,control EMVs or n-EMVs administration could decrease the infarct volume and neurological deficit score,while increase the cerebral blood flow of IS mice compared with vehicle group,while IS EMVs or oxygen and glucose deprivation(OGD)-EMVs administration aggravated the tMCAO induced ischaemic injury.In addition,we observed that OGD EMVmiR-125a 5p could partially ameliorate the OGD EMVs induced brain injury after IS.Conclusions These findings demonstrate that circulatin

The multiple PDZ domain crumbs cell polarity complex component gene(MPDZ;MIM:603785),is highly expressed in the brain across the whole lifespan.It encodes the multiple PDZ domain protein,which is a member of the NMDAR signaling complex that may play a role in the control of AMPAR potentiation and synaptic plasticity in excitatory synapses."Previously,MPDZ variants have been demonstrated to be associated with autosomal recessive congenital hydrocephalus-2(HYC2;MIM:615219)which is commonly complicated by brain abnormalities and developmental delay.Seizures were reported in only one case.The association between MPDz and epilepsy requires clarification.

Highly active and robust electrocatalysts are desired for proton exchange membrane fuel cells.Pt-based intermetallic compounds(IMCs) have been recognized as one of the most promising low-platinum catalysts for fuel cells(FCs).Herein,we report a high-performance IMCs by anchoring ordered PtCoNi ternary nanoparticles on the N,Co and Ni co-doped dodecahedral mesoporous carbon(DMC).While the introduced Co and Ni participate in the formation of PtCoNi IMCs,some of them are doped in the mesoporous carbon and coordinated by N to form Co-N_(y)/Ni-N_(z)dual active centers,which further enhances the electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction.Moreover,the addition of Ni results in a negative shift of the d-band center of Pt as compared to the Pt/DMC and Pt_(3)Co/DMC,making it easier to adsorb oxygen on the surface.As expected,our optimal sample Pt_(3)Co_(0.7)Ni_(0.3)/DMC exhibits excellent performance with mass activity and specific activity of 1.32 A mgPt-1and 1.98 mA cm^(-2)at 0.9 V,which are 7.33and 6.19 times that of commercial Pt/C,respectively.The Pt_(3)Co_(0.7)Ni_(0.3)/DMC also reveals much better cathodic performance in an H2-air single fuel cell than commercial Pt/C catalyst with a power density of0.802 W cm^(-2).This work provides critical sights into constructing efficient catalysts by ternary intermetallic strategy and synergetic effect between active components and support.

Prevalence and Spectrum of Complex Congenital Heart Disease in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at High Altitude in China

Background:Previous studies from high altitudes have reported significantly higher prevalence of congenital heart disease(CHD),consisting almost solely of simple CHD.Little is known about the occurrence of complex CHD.Neonates with complex CHD are likely admitted to NICU.We examined the prevalence and spectrum of complex CHD in NICU in order to depict a truer picture of CHD at high altitude.Methods:We reviewed charts of 4,214 neonates admitted to NICU in Qinghai province(average altitude 3,000 m).Echocardiography was performed in 1,943 babies when CHD was suspected based on clinical examinations.Results:CHD was diagnosed in 1,093(56.3%of echoed babies).Mild CHD in 96.8%(1058 babies).Moderate CHD in 0.8%(9)included 1(0.1%)large secundum atrial septal defect,3(0.3%)moderate pulmonary stenosis,2(0.2%)aortic stenosis and 3(0.3%)partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection.Severe CHD in 2.4%(26)included 6(0.5%)complete atrioventricular septal defect,5(0.5%)complete transposition of the great arteries,5(0.5%)hypoplastic right heart,3(0.3%)hypoplastic left heart,3(0.3%)double outlet right ventricle,3(0.3%)tetralogy of Fallot,2(0.2%)truncus arteriosus,2(0.2%)total anomalous pulmonary venous connection,2(0.2%)severe aortic stenosis,2(0.2%)interrupted aortic arch and 2(0.2%)severe pulmonary stenosis and 1(0.1%)single-ventricle abnormality.At two-years follow-up in 737(67.4%)patients,18(90%)with severe CHD and 38(5.3%)with mild and moderate CHD died,and 15 underwent cardiac surgery with 1 early death.Conclusions:At high altitude,a wide spectrum of CHD exists,with many heretofore unreported complex CHD.There is urgent need for routine echocardiography and early interventions in newborns particularly in NICU.

Background and Aims:The redefinition of metabolic-as-sociated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)from nonalcoholic fat-ty liver disease(NAFLD)has caused a revolution in clinical practice,and the characteristics of patients with steatosis but not MAFLD remain unclear.The aims were to compare the diagnosis rate of MAFLD in NAFLD using different steato-sis methods and explore the features of non-MAFLD-NAFLD and MAFLD-non-NAFLD.Methods:A cross-sectional study enrolling consecutive individuals was conducted at three medical centers in southern China from January 2015 to September 2020.Steatosis was evaluated by liver biopsy or magnetic resonance imaging-based proton density fat frac-tion(MRI-PDFF),ultrasound,controlled attenuation param-eter(CAP),and fatty liver index(FLI).Fibrosis was assessed by the NAFLD fibrosis score,transient elastography,or shear wave elastography.Results:The study enrolled 14,985 Chi-nese adults.The agreement of MAFLD and NAFLD diagnoses were 83%for FLI,95%for ultrasound,94%for both CAP and MRI-PDFF,and 95%for liver biopsy.The body mass index,blood pressure and lipid levels among non-MAFLD-NAFLD pa-tients were similar metabolic parameters(p>0.05 for all),but not the alanine aminotransferase and the proportion of pa-tients with insulin resistance,which were significantly higher in non-MAFLD-NAFLD with significant fibrosis.Conclusions:The new MAFLD definition ruled out 5-17%of NAFLD cases.NAFLD and MAFLD-NAFLD involved more severe metabolic abnormalities than MAFLD and MAFLD-non-NAFLD.Non-MAFLD-NAFLD patients with significant fibrosis had more se-vere liver injury and increased glycemic dysregulation within the normal range.Attention should be paid to its progression.

Background:Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a devastating progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects neurons in the central nervous system and the spinal cord.As in many other neurodegenerative disorders,the genetic risk factors and pathogenesis of ALS involve dysregulation of cytoskeleton and neuronal transport.Notably,sen-sory and motor neuron diseases such as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2(HSAN2)and spastic paraplegia 30(SPG30)share several causative genes with ALS,as well as having common clinical phenotypes.KIF1A encodes a kinesin 3 motor that transports presynaptic vesicle precursors(SVPs)and dense core vesicles and has been reported as a causative gene for HSAN2 and SPG30.Methods:Here,we analyzed whole-exome sequencing data from 941 patients with ALS to investigate the genetic association of KIF1A with ALS.Results:We identified rare damage variants(RDVs)in the KIF1A gene associated with ALS and delineated the clini-cal characteristics of ALS patients with KIF1A RDVs.Clinically,these patients tended to exhibit sensory disturbance.Interestingly,the majority of these variants are located at the C-terminal cargo-binding region of the KIF1A protein.Functional examination revealed that the ALS-associated KIF1A variants located in the C-terminal region preferentially enhanced the binding of SVPs containing RAB3A,VAMP2,and synaptophysin.Expression of several disease-related KIF1A mutants in cultured mouse cortical neurons led to enhanced colocalization of RAB3A or VAMP2 with the KIF1A motor.Conclusions:Our study highlighted the importance of KIF1A motor-mediated transport in the pathogenesis of ALS,indicating KIF1A as an important player in the oligogenic scenario of ALS.

A novel 4H-SiC trench MOSFET with double shielding structures and ultralow gate-drain charge

A new ultralow gate–drain charge(Q_(GD)) 4 H-SiC trench MOSFET is presented and its mechanism is investigated by simulation. The novel MOSFET features double shielding structures(DS-MOS): one is the grounded split gate(SG), the other is the P+shielding region(PSR). Both the SG and the PSR reduce the coupling effect between the gate and the drain, and transform the most part of the gate–drain capacitance(C_(GD)) into the gate–source capacitance(C_(GS)) and drain–source capacitance(C_(DS)) in series.Thus the C_(GD) is reduced and the proposed DS-MOS obtains ultralow Q_(GD). Compared with the double-trench MOSFET(DT-MOS)and the conventional trench MOSFET(CT-MOS), the proposed DS-MOS decreases the Q_(GD) by 85% and 81%, respectively.Moreover, the figure of merit(FOM), defined as the product of specific on-resistance(R_(on, sp)) and Q_(GD)(R_(on, sp)Q_(GD)), is reduced by 84% and 81%, respectively.

热带气旋快速加强与海表温度分布统计特征研究

为加强海表温度对热带气旋快速加强影响的认识,利用中国气象局上海台风研究所整编的热带气旋最佳路径数据集和欧洲中尺度天气预报中心提供的海温数据,选取1979-2019年期间的西北太平洋热带气旋,统计分析了海温和热带气旋强度快速变化的特征。研究结果表明:(1)约90%的热带气旋快速加强发生在夏季和秋季,分别占快速加强总次数的32.8%和56.4%,绝大部分热带气旋以跨越1个强度等级的快速加强为主,由强热带风暴快速加强到台风和由台风快速加强到强台风是出现次数较多的两种情况。(2)夏季大于28℃,秋季大于27.5℃的海表温度条件有利于热带气旋快速加强,较低强度等级的热带气旋需要更高的海表温度(> 29℃)才易出现快速加强;热带气旋快速移动有利于其中心处海温维持较高状态。(3)海温的时间变率在±0.2℃/(6 h)内,水平空间梯度低于0.4℃/(°)是热带气旋快速加强的有利条件;热带气旋强度越强,越需要平稳的海表温度环境。(4)热带气旋处于强热带风暴及以上级别时,仅利用海表温度条件对其是否发生快速加强的判断准确性较好。这一工作量化了有利于热带气旋加强的海表温度环境,为业务上基于海表温度定量预报热带气旋强度演变提供了一种技术参考。
