Combining ectomycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria to enhance salt tolerance of Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Plant growth and productivity are negatively affected by soil salinity.This study investigated the effects of the rhizosphere-promoting bacterium,Bacillus paramycoides JYZ-SD5,and the ectomycorrhizal fungus,Schizophyllum commune Be,on the growth of Metasequoia glyptostroboides under salt stress.Changes in biomass,root growth,root ion distribution and in vivo enzyme activities were determined under different treatments(Be,JYZ-SD5,and Be+JYZ-SD5).The results show that all inoculations increased chlorophyll content,shoot length and root diameter with or without salt stress,and the effect of Be+JYZ-SD5was the strongest.JYZ-SD5 and Be+JYZ-SD5 treatments significantly increased root length,surface area,bifurcation number,tip number,main root length and diameter under salt stress.Normal chloroplast structures developed under both single and double inoculations.Relative to the control,root activities of M.glyptostroboides in the Be,JYZSD5,and Be+JYZ-SD5 treatments increased by 31.3%,17.2%,and 33.7%.All treatments increased the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD),Na^(+)-K^(+)-ATPase and Ca^(2+)-Mg^(2+)-ATPase.The strongest effect was by Be+JYZ-SD5.Analysis of root ion distribution showed that,under salt stress,Na^(+)and K^(+)decreased and were concentrated in the epidermis or cortex.Na/K ratios also decreased.The Be+JYZ-SD5 treatment increased betaine by 130.3%and 97.9%under 50 mM and 100 mM salt stress,respectively.Together,these changes result in the activation of physiological and biochemical processes involved in the mitigation of salinity-induced stress in M.glyptostroboides.

Enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins can enhance their emulsifying properties and antioxidant activities.However,the problem related to the hydrolysis of proteins was the generation of the bitter taste.Recently,high hydrostatic pressure(HHP)treatment has attracted much interest and has been used in several studies on protein modification.Hence,the study aimed to investigate the effects of enzymatic hydrolysis by Corolase PP under different pressure treatments(0.1,100,200,and 300 MPa for 1-5 h at 50℃)on the emulsifying property,antioxidant activity,and bitterness of soybean protein isolate hydrolysate(SPIH).As observed,the hydrolysate obtained at 200 MPa for 4 h had the highest emulsifying activity index(47.49 m^(2)/g)and emulsifying stability index(92.98%),and it had higher antioxidant activities(44.77%DPPH free radical scavenging activity,31.12%superoxide anion radical scavenging activity,and 61.50%copper ion chelating activity).At the same time,the enhancement of emulsion stability was related to the increase of zeta potential and the decrease of mean particle size.In addition,the hydrolysate obtained at 200 MPa for 4 h had a lower bitterness value and showed better palatability.This study has a broad application prospect in developing food ingredients and healthy foods.

Insufficient activity and instability(poisoning)of Pt-based electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions(MOR/ORR)impede the development of direct methanol fuel cells.Here,CoWO_(4) nanoparticles-loaded WO_(3) microrods coated by a thin carbon-layer are used as Pt-supports/co-catalysts for MOR/ORR.WO_(3) grows along the(110)crystal plane to form microrod(diameter of~0.6 um),which is coated by a carbon-layer(~5 nm).Pt-CoWO_(4)/WO_(3)@NCL-mr(850℃)shows a higher mass activity(2208 mA mg^(-1)_(pt))than the commercial Pt/C(659.4 mA mg^(-1)_(pt)).CoWO_(4)/WO_(3) heterojunction on the microrod surface with abundant oxygen vacancies allows the generation of surface-adsorbed hydroxyl to facilitate CO elimination and regeneration of the occupied Pt active-sites(promising stability).PtCo WO_(4)/WO_(3)@NCL-mr(850℃)has higher half-wave(0.46 V)and onset(0.54 V)potentials than Pt/C(0.41 and 0.50 V)for ORR.The microrod structure of Co WO_(4)/WO_(3)@NCL facilitates the dispersibility of Pt NPs to increase the utilization of Pt active sites and relieve the self-aggregation of Pt to obtain a promising synergy between Pt and CoWO_(4)(Co^(2+))for ORR in acid media.This study provides insights not only into the synthesis of acid-resistant WO_(3)@NCL microrod as active Pt co-catalyst,but also into the effective utilization of surface oxygen vacancies and Co^(2+) for MOR/ORR.

Docking-based inverse virtual screening: methods,applications, and challenges

Identifying potential protein targets for a small-compound ligand query is crucial to the process of drug development. However, there are tens of thousands of proteins in human alone, and it is almost impossible to scan all the existing proteins for a query ligand using current experimental methods.Recently, a computational technology called docking-based inverse virtual screening(IVS) has attracted much attention. In docking-based IVS, a panel of proteins is screened by a molecular docking program to identify potential targets for a query ligand. Ever since the first paper describing a docking-based IVS program was published about a decade ago, the approach has been gradually improved and utilized for a variety of purposes in the field of drug discovery. In this article, the methods employed in dockingbased IVS are reviewed in detail, including target databases, docking engines, and scoring function methodologies. Several web servers developed for non-expert users are also reviewed. Then, a number of applications are presented according to different research purposes, such as target identification,side effects/toxicity, drug repositioning, drug–target network development, and receptor design. The review concludes by discussing the challenges that docking-based IVS needs to overcome to become a robust tool for pharmaceutical engineering.

Non-precious metal electrocatalyst molybdenum sulphide(MoS) and black phosphorus(BP) are highly promising catalysts for H_(2) evolution reaction(HER).However,BP is environmentally unstable and the basal planes of crystal MoS_(2) are inactive toward HER.Herein,amorphous molybdenum sulphide(MoSx)directly on BP/BiVO4 film dramatically improves the performance of photoelectrochemical water splitting compared with pure BiVO4.Additionally,we demonstrate that a BP layer,inserted between the MoSx and BiVO4,can enhance the photoelectrochemical performance and improve the stability of the electrodes.Finally,MoS_(x)/B P/BVO electrode shows the excellent current density of 2.1 mA/cm^(2) at the potential of 1.2 V(vs Ag/AgCl),which is twice higher than that of pure BVO electrode.Our novel nanostructure materials will lead to a new class of non-precious metal photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

A partial ligand exchange strategy for fabricating catalytically active single palladium site immobilized on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8,Pd1/ZIF-8)is proposed in this work.The one-step synthesis simply involves reacting Na_(2)PdCl_(4) with ZIF-8 in solvent.The Cl ligands of Na_(2)PdCl_(4) exchanged with 2-methylimidazole(2-MeIm)of the framework,resulting in the anchoring Pd on the framework and dissociation of Zn into the solution.The whole synthesis is performed at ambient conditions and the crystalline integrity of ZIF-8 is well retained.The resulting Pd_(1)/ZIF-8 is extensively characterized by different techniques which confirm the proposed mechanism.Pd_(1)/ZIF-8 is also successfully applied in the size-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes.

Sustainable synthesis of high-density fuel via catalytic cascade cycloaddition reaction

During hepatic steatosis,aberrant microRNA expression profiles occur in association with the process of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).We have previously shown that miR-152 increases during NAFLD in high-fat diet induced obese rats.Whether miR-152 is implicated in the regulation of hepatic metabolic functions is not clear.In this work,hepG2 cells and human hepatocytes were transfected with lentiviral-based hsa-miR-152 mimic (LentimiR-152),lentiviral-based hsa-miR-152 inhibitor (Lenti-152-In) or lentiviral-based negative control (Lenti-NC)to assess the role of miR-152 in hepatic steatosis.

The access to high-density hydrocarbon fuels from biomass for the reduction of dependence on fossil resources has been a research highlight in recent years. It is well known that cycloalkanes are the components of fuels with higher energy density than straight or branched alkanes. Herein, we developed a new catalytic pattern to synthesize dimethyltetradecahydroanthracenes(DMTHA), a kind of tricyclic alkane, from biomass-derived isoprene and p-benzoquinone via a cascade Diels-Alder reaction followed by a hydrodeoxygenation reaction. Vanadium supported on titanium dioxide(V-TiO_(2)) was applied to catalyze the cascade Diels-Alder reaction and it was disclosed that V with appropriate V^(4+)/V^(5+) ratio on the surface of TiO_(2) could activate quinones. Experimental tests showed that the heating value of final products was up to 45.7 MJ/kg. The development of new high-density fuel molecules is a long-term trend for the future renewable and sustainable fuel energy application.

The 3D visualization of the porosity in high-pressure die casting(HPDC)Mg alloys AZ91D and Mg4Ce2Al0.5Mn(EA42)was investigated by X-ray computed tomography.It was demonstrated that the volumetric porosity at the near-gate location for alloy EA42 was significantly higher than that far from the gate location.This difference resulted from the low valid time during intensified casting pressure conditions.Specimens of alloy EA42 exhibited a narrow pore distribution in the side view(~0.5 mm)compared to the wide distribution(~1.8 mm)of alloy AZ91D,which was mainly attributed to the formation mechanism of the defect band.The formation of microporosity in the defect band of alloy EA42 was inhibited because of the significant latent heat released by a large amount of the Al11Ce3phase segregated in the defect band during solidification.Additionally,an effective estimator(Z-Propagation)was introduced,which is proposed to predict the projected area fraction of the porosity(f)involved during tensile failure with better effectiveness compared with traditional methods based on the actual fractured surface.By coupling the Z-Propagation method with the critical local strain model,the logarithmic fracture strain and true fracture stress of the specimens were predicted within 3.03%and 1.65%of the absolute value of the average relative error(AARE),respectively.
