Revisiting the anodic stability of nickel-cobalt hydroxide/carbon composite electrodes for rechargeable Ni-Zn battery

Aqueous rechargeable Ni−Zn batteries are considered as a new generation of safe and reliable electro-chemical energy storage system.However,low electronic conductivity of Ni-based cathodes hinders the practical application of Ni-Zn batteries.This problem can be overcome by compositing the Ni-based cath-ode with highly conductive carbon substrates.A chemical oxidation pre-treatment is popularly applied to the carbon substrates to increase their hydrophilicity and thus facilitate the growth of active materials in aqueous systems.However,the anodic stability of the oxidized carbon substrates is greatly challenged,which has never been addressed in previous reports.In this work,we first compared the anodic stabil-ity of carbon fiber paper with and without oxidation treatment and find that carbon substrate with the chemical treatment caused remarkable oxidization current in the required voltage range.To take both anodic stability and fine growth of active materials into account,here we demonstrated a facile physical surface-treatment method of ethanol wetting to replace the chemical treatment.The ethanol infiltration removes gas adsorption on carbon substrates and thus promotes their hydrophilicity.This cost-effective strategy simultaneously achieves a high anodic stability and a fine growth and uniform distribution of nickel-cobalt hydroxide on the carbon microfibers.The resulting Ni-Zn battery provides a high discharge capacity of 219 mAh/g with an operation cell voltage of 1.75 V.

Dissolved organic matter plays a critical role in affecting sorption properties of biochar for organic contaminants.In this study,dissolved humic acid(DHA)as a representative of dissolved organic matter and oak sawdust-derived biochar as a sorbent were prepared and characterized.Roles of DHA in sorption of benzotriazole(BTA),an emerging organic contaminant,to biochar in different electrolyte solutions were investigated.The results revealed the dual roles of DHA in BTA sorption to biochar.On the one hand,DHA can compete for sites and/or block pores available for BTA to inhibit the adsorption of BTA to biochar.On the other hand,the sorbed DHA on biochar can serve as additional partitioning phase to promote the partition of BTA.The finding was in accordance with the site energy distribution analysis of BTA sorption that the site energy of the highest occurring frequency in the DHA-BTA system was lower than that in the DHA-free system(3.41-10.4 versus 13.1-20.1 kJ mol^(−1)).The variation in apparent BTA sorption to biochar affected by DHA was thus a combination of changes in both its partition and adsorption properties.A modified Dual-mode model including the aqueous concentration of DHA was proposed to predict the effect of DHA on BTA sorption to biochar in different electrolyte solutions,which showed good prediction performance with most BTA sorption coefficient(K_(d),L g^(−1))deviations within 0.1 log unit.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) is the most serious infectious disease pandemic in the world in a century, and has had a serious impact on the health, safety, and social and economic development of all mankind. Since the earth entered the“Anthropocene”, human activities have become the most important driving force of the evolution of the earth system. At the same time, the epidemic frequency of major human infectious diseases worldwide has been increasing, with more than 70% of novel diseases having zoonotic origins. The review of several major epidemics in human history shows that there is a common rule, i.e., changes in the natural environment have an important and profound impact on the occurrence and development of epidemics. Therefore, the impact of the natural environment on the current COVID-19 pandemic and its mechanisms have become scientific issues that need to be resolved urgently. From the perspective of the natural environment, this study systematically investigated several major issues concerning the environmental transmission and risk prevention of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2). From a macroscopic temporal and spatial scale, the research focus on understand the impact of the destruction of the natural environment and global changes on the outbreak of infectious diseases;the threat of zoonotic diseases to human health;the regularity for virus diffusion, migration and mutation in environmental media;the mechanisms of virus transmission from animals and environmental media to humans;and environmental safety, secondary risk prevention and control of major epidemics. Suggestions were made for future key research directions and issues that need attention, with a view to providing a reference for the prevention and control of the global coronavirus disease 2019, and to improving the ability of response to major public health emergencies.

The Zr-2.5Nb alloy with a fine microstructure consisting ofαlaths was successfully prepared by electron beam melting(EBM).The thermal oxidation behaviors and kinetics of the as-built,and the EBM-built and hot isostatically pressed(HIPed)Zr-2.5Nb materials in a temperature range of 450-600°C were in-vestigated and compared with those of the alloy prepared by conventional casting and forging.It was found that the oxidation kinetics of the as-built and the forged materials followed the parabolic rate law during isothermal oxidation at 550°C,but the HIPed materials exhibited a parabolic-to-linear kinetic transition,suggesting that the larger grain sizes enhanced the oxidation.The oxide layers of all materials were composed of a large fraction of monoclinic zirconia phase(m-ZrO_(2))and a small fraction of tetrago-nal zirconia phase(t-ZrO_(2)),and transformed from t-ZrO_(2)to m-ZrO_(2)with increasing oxidation time.The surface hardness of the as-built,the forged and the HIPed materials increased from 215,204,and 188 HV before oxidation to 902,1070,and 1137 HV after oxidation,respectively.The cross-sections of the materi-als showed the presence of micropores and microcracks inside the oxide layers with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 8μm.With the oxidation temperature of 600°C and oxidation time duration of 3 h,a dense black m-ZrO_(2)oxide layer with smooth surface and 902 HV hardness was obtained on the EBM as-built Zr-2.5Nb materials.

Unified Variable Selection for Varying Coefficient Models with Longitudinal Data

Variable selection for varying coefficient models includes the separation of varying and constant effects,and the selection of variables with nonzero varying effects and those with nonzero constant effects.This paper proposes a unified variable selection approach called the double-penalized quadratic inference functions method for varying coefficient models of longitudinal data.The proposed method can not only separate varying coefficients and constant coefficients,but also estimate and select the nonzero varying coefficients and nonzero constant coefficients.It is suitable for variable selection of linear models,varying coefficient models,and partial linear varying coefficient models.Under regularity conditions,the proposed method is consistent in both separation and selection of varying coefficients and constant coefficients.The obtained estimators of varying coefficients possess the optimal convergence rate of non-parametric function estimation,and the estimators of nonzero constant coefficients are consistent and asymptotically normal.Finally,the authors investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed method through simulation studies and a real data analysis.The results show that the proposed method performs better than the existing competitor.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAHs）are attracting concern because of their potential toxicity,posing serious threats to health of humans and ecosystems（Kim et al.,2013;zhao et al.,2016）.Generally,similar to other contaminants＇behaviors（Wu et al.,2001;Zhang et al.,2007,2008;Lu et al.,2009）,PAHs result from natural organic matter and activities of humans,the latter＇s contribution usually outweighing the inputs from other sources（Fernández et al.,2000;Srogi,2007）.

A Fusion Kalman Filter and UFIR Estimator Using the Influence Function Method

In this paper,the Kalman filter(KF)and the unbiased finite impulse response(UFIR)filter are fused in the discrete-time state-space to improve robustness against uncertainties.To avoid the problem where fusion filters may give up some advantages of UFIR filters by fusing based on noise statistics,we attempt to find a way to fuse without using noise statistics.The fusion filtering algorithm is derived using the influence function that provides a quantified measure for disturbances on the resulting filtering outputs and is termed as an influence finite impulse response(IFIR)filter.The main advantage of the proposed method is that the noise statistics of process noise and measurement noise are no longer required in the fusion process,showing that a critical feature of the UFIR filter is inherited.One numerical example and a practice-oriented case are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.It is shown that the IFIR filter has adaptive performance and can automatically switch from the Kalman estimate to the UFIR estimates according to operating conditions.Moreover,the proposed method can reduce the effects of optimal horizon length on the UFIR estimate and can give the state estimates of best accuracy among all the compared methods.

The Overwintering Capability of Ulva prolifera Spores and Gametes in the Yellow Sea,China

Green tides caused by the bloom of Ulva prolifera have affected the Yellow Sea annually since 2007.To explore the intrinsic causes of successive blooms,field investigations and indoor simulation experiments were conducted using micro-propagules of U.prolifera.From January to February 2014,micro-propagules of various green algae,including U.prolifera,Ulva flexuosa,and Ulva linza,were prevalent in the coastal waters of Rudong,Lianyungang,and Qingdao.However,in March 2014,micro-propagules of U.prolifera were not detected in the coastal waters of Lianyungang and Qingdao.Neither the spores nor gametes of U.prolifera can germinate at temperatures below 5℃.At 2℃and 5℃,U.prolifera spores and gametes could survive for 1-3 months at a light intensity range of 0-30μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)and for less than 1 month if the light intensity exceeded 30μmol m^(-2)s^(-1).By integrating indoor experiments and field investigations,this study found that U.prolifera spores and gametes could overwinter in the Rudong coastal area,which is an important factor for the annual emergence of recurring green tides in the Yellow Sea.

Thermal shock of subsurface material with plastic flow during scuffing

The thermal shock of subsurface material with shear instability and severe plastic flow during scuffing was investigated.The scuffing damage of M50 steel was tested using a high-speed rolling-sliding contact test rig,and the transient temperature during scuffing was calculated using the Fourier transform method considering the effects of both frictional heat and plastic work.The results show that a thermal shock with a rapid rise and subsequent rapid decrease in the contact temperature is generated in the subsurface layers.The frictional power intensity generates a high temperature rise,leading to the austenitization of the subsurface material.Consequently,the plastic flow is generated in the subsurface layer under the high shear stress,and the resulting plastic strain energy generates a further temperature increase.Subsequently,a rapid decrease in the contact temperature quenches the material,resulting in clear shear slip bands and retained austenite in the subsurface layers of the M50 steel.
