Effects of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion of beta- and gamma-secretase on learning and memory in rats

BACKGROUND： Chronic cerebral hypoxia and ischemia have been shown to be related to occurrence of sporadic Alzheimer＇s disease, and β- and y-secretase play an important role in the generation of β-amyloid protein. Early clinical symptoms in Alzheimer＇s disease patients include learning and memory deficits. OBJECTIVE： To measure learning and memory, as well as β- and β-secretase activities in the hippocampus of a cerebral ischemia/hypoxia rat model with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the Department of Pathology, Capital Medical University from March to December, 2008. MATERIALS： β- and y-secretase activity kits were purchased from R ＆ D Systems, USA. METHODS： Male Sprague Dawiey rats, aged 23 weeks, were randomly assigned to model （n = 56） and sham-surgery （n = 46） groups. Cerebral hypoperfusion rat models were established by bilateral common carotid occlusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Morris water maze was used to test changes in escape latency and path length, and β- and y-secretase activities were measured on days 10, 30, 90, and 180 following surgery. RESULTS： Progressive cognitive impairment resulted from 30 days of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, which lasted for 180 days after cerebral hypoperfusion. β-secretase activity was increased at 10 days after hypoperfusion, which continued until 180 days, with a 14.25% increase compared to the sham-surgery group; y-secretase activity was increased by 10.5%. CONCLUSION： Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion results in impaired spatial memory and upregulated β- and y-secretase activities, which could play an important role in β-amyloid production.

Na-ion cathode materials with a fast charge and discharge behavior are needed to develop future high energy sodium-ion batteries(SIBs).However,inevitably complicated phase transitions and sluggish kinet ics during insertion and removal of Na+in P_(2)-type layered transition metal oxides generate structura instability and severe capacity *** get rid of such a dilemma,we report a structural optimization strategy to promote P2-type layered transition metal oxides with more(010)active planes as an efficien cathode for *** a result,as-prepared hexagonal-prism P2-type layered Na_(0.71)Ni_(0.16)li_(0.09)Co_(0.16)Mn0.6O_(2)cathode with more(010)active planes delivers a reversible capacity of 120.1 mAh/g at 0.1 C,impressive rate capability of 52.7 m Ah/g at 10 C,and long-term cycling stability(capacity retention of 95.6%ove200 cycles).The outstanding electrochemical performance benefited from the unique hexagonal-prism with more(010)active facets,which can effectively shorten the diffusion distances of Na+,increase the Na-ion migration dynamics and nanostructural stability during cycling verified by morphology character ization,Rietveld refinement,GITT,density functional theory calculations and operando XRD.

Flexible ureteroscopic treatment of kidney stones: How do the new laser systems change our concepts?

Objective: Flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) has become a widely accepted and effective technique for treating kidney stones. With the development of new laser systems, the fURS approach has evolved significantly. This literature review aims to examine the current state of knowledge on fURS treatment of kidney stones, with a particular focus on the impact of the latest laser technologies on clinical outcomes and patient ***: We conducted a search of the PubMed/PMC, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, Embase (Ovid), and Cochrane Databases for all randomized controlled trial articles on laser lithotripsy in September 2023 without time ***: We found a total of 22 relevant pieces of literature. Holmium laser has been used for intracavitary laser lithotripsy for nearly 30 years and has become the golden standard for the treatment of urinary stones. However, the existing holmium laser cannot completely powder the stone, and the retropulsion of the stone after the laser emission and the thermal damage to the tissue have caused many problems for clinicians. The introduction of thulium fiber laser and Moses technology brings highly efficient dusting lithotripsy effect through laser innovation, limiting pulse energy and broadening pulse ***: While the holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser remains the primary choice for endoscopic laser lithotripsy, recent technological advancements hint at a potential new gold standard. Parameter range, retropulsion effect, laser fiber adaptability, and overall system performance demand comprehensive attention. The ablation efficacy of high-pulse-frequency devices relies on precise targeting, which may pose practical challenges.

lithium metal(LM)is a promising anode for next-generation batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrode ***,side reactions,volume change,and unwanted lithium dendrite growth seriously limit the practical application of ***,with the aid of a hard template approach,a novel lithiophilic CoF_(2)-carbon hollow sphere(CoF_(2)@C-HS)composite material is successfully prepared via a facile in-situ fluorination and etching *** lithiophilic CoF_(2) acts as nucleation sites to reduce nucleation overpotential as well as induces the spatial li deposition and the formation of liFrich solid electrolyte interphase(SEI),and the hollow carbon matrix can enhance the electrical conductivity and offer free space for LM *** simulations reveal that the synergistic effect of lithiophilic CoF_(2) and hollow carbon matrix homogenizes the electric field distribution and li~+*** from these advantages,the CoF_(2)@C-HS-modified copper substrate electrode delivers an enhanced Coulombic efficiency(CE)of 93.7%for 280 cycles at 1 mA cm^(-2)and 1 mA h cm^(-2).The symmetrical cell using CoF_(2)@C-HS can stably cycle more than 1800 h with a low voltage hysteresis of 11 mV at a current density of 0.5 MA cm^(-2)and an areal capacity of 0.5 mA h cm^(-2).Moreover,the li@CoF_(2)@C-HS composite anode enables more than 300 stable cycles at 1 C with a capacity retention of 95%in liFePO_(4)-based full cell and 110 stable cycles at 1 C in liNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)(NCM811)-based highvoltage full *** work might shed a new light on designing lithiophilic hosts to spatially confine LM deposition,realizing dendrite-free LM anodes and the practical applications of LM batteries.

lithium-sulfur battery is one of the most promising battery systems for industrialization due to its high theoretical specific capacity and high energy ***,the"shuttle effect"has restrained the advancement of lithium-sulfur *** this work,a gradient-structured nanofiber membrane with pure gelatin on one side and Super P-MoO_(2)/MoS_(2)-gelatin on the other side was created using a multi-step electrostatic spinning technique,which was applied for multi-functional separator for lithium-sulfur *** pure gelatin layer facing the anode side primarily homogenizes the lithium flux,whereas the Super P-MoO_(2)/MoS_(2)-gelatin layer facing the cathode side primarily adsorbs polysulfides by physical and chemical adsorption and enhancing polysulfide conversion *** findings demonstrate that even after 150 cycles at 0.2C,the lithium-sulfur battery can still sustain a discharge-specific capacity of 572.3 mAh·g^(-1).When used with li||li symmetric batteries,it has a cycle life of more than 1200 *** commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries is given a fresh idea by this straightforward preparation technique.

POLAR-2 is a gamma-ray burst(GRB)polarimeter that is designed to study the polarization in GRB radiation emissions,aiming to improve our knowledge of related ***-2 is expected to utilize an on-board polarimeter that is sensitive to soft X-rays(2-10 keV),called low-energy polarization *** have developed a new soft X-ray polari-zation detector prototype based on gas microchannel plates(GMCPs)and pixel chips(Topmetal).The GMCPs have bulk resistance,which prevents charging-up effects and ensures gain stability during *** detector is composed of low outgassing materials and is gas-sealed using a laser welding technique,ensuring long-term stability.A modulation factor of 41.28%±0.64% is obtained for a 4.5 keV polarized X-ray beam.A residual modulation of 1.96%±0.58% at 5.9 keV is observed for the entire sensitive area.

Research on the solid particle erosion wear of pipe steel for hydraulic fracturing based on experiments and numerical simulations

Erosion wear is a common failure mode in the oil and gas industry. In the hydraulic fracturing, the fracturing pipes are not only in high-pressure working environment, but also suffer from the impact of the high-speed solid particles in the fracturing fluid. Beneath such complex conditions, the vulnerable components of the pipe system are prone to perforation or even burst accidents, which has become one of the most serious risks at the fracturing site. Unfortunately, it is not yet fully understood the erosion mechanism of pipe steel for hydraulic fracturing. Therefore, this article provides a detailed analysis of the erosion behavior of fracturing pipes under complex working conditions based on experiments and numerical simulations. Firstly, we conducted erosion experiments on AISI 4135 steel for fracturing pipes to investigate the erosion characteristics of the material. The effects of impact angle, flow velocity and applied stress on erosion wear were comprehensively considered. Then a particle impact dynamic model of erosion wear was developed based on the experimental parameters, and the evolution process of particle erosion under different impact angles, impact velocities and applied stress was analyzed. By combining the erosion characteristics, the micro-structure of the eroded area, and the micro-mechanics of erosion damage, the erosion mechanism of pipe steel under fracturing conditions was studied in detail for the first time. Under high-pressure operating conditions, it was demonstrated through experiments and numerical simulations that the size of the micro-defects in the eroded area increased as the applied stress increased, resulting in more severe erosion wear of fracturing pipes.
