Analgesic effect of acupuncture at Hegu (LI 4) on transvaginal oocyte retrieval with ultrasonography

OBJECTIVE: To observe the analgesic effect of acupuncture at Hegu (LI 4) in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) transvaginal oocyte retrieval using ultrasonography and explore its mechanism. METHODS: Ninety patients undergoing IVF-EF oocyte retrieval were randomly divided into three groups: an acupuncture group with needles inserted into bilateral Hegu (LI 4) points, a placebo group given placebo needles, and a control group with routine oocyte retrieval. Each group had an indometacin enema 30 min before the operation. We compared the pain-rated index (PRI), visual analogy scale (VAS), and present pain intensity (PPI) immediately after operation and 1 h after operation. We also determined the neuropeptide Y (NPY) level of the follicular fluid. RESULTS: PRI, VAS, and PPI after operation and 1 hafter operation in the acupuncture group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P0.05) was observed in PRI,VAS, and PPI after operation and 1 h after operation between the placebo group and the control *** NPY level of the follicular fluid in the acupuncture group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P0.05) was observed in the NPY level of the follicular fluid between the placebo group and the control group. CONCLUSION: The analgesic effect of acupuncture at Hegu in transvaginal oocyte retrieval using ultrasonography may be related to the increase in the NPY level of the follicular fluid.

Characteristics of Surface Micro-discharge Excited by Pulsed Voltage in Open Air

The surface micro-discharge(SMD)excited by pulsed voltage in open air is experimentally studied by measuring its voltage,current,emission image,emission spectrum,and ultraviolet(UV)absorption *** is found that the SMD occurs intermittently in each cycle,and that it consists of many filaments on the surface of grounded *** the applied voltage’s peak value Up increases from 1.75 kV to 7.25 kV,the discharge area keeps expanding until Up≈6 kV,when the discharge occupies all the available *** emission spectrum of nitrogen metastable N2(C-B)and the density of ozone increase almost *** ozone density decreases hyperbolically downstream of the grounded electrode due to the diffusion in open *** characteristics of pulsed SMD are presented and analyzed as well,which may be referred by further investigations.

Optimal regenerative repair of large segmental bone defect in a goat model with osteoinductive calcium phosphate bioceramic implants

So far,how to achieve the optimal regenerative repair of large load-bearing bone defects using artificial bone grafts is a huge challenge in *** this study,a strategy of combining osteoinductive biphasic calcium phosphate(BCP)bioceramic scaffolds with intramedullary nail fixation for creating stable osteogenic microenvironment was applied to repair large segmental bone defects(3.0 cm in length)in goat femur *** material characterization results showed that the BCP scaffold had the initial compressive strength of over 2.0 MPa,and total porosity of 84%.The cell culture experiments demonstrated that the scaffold had the excellent ability to promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs).The in vivo results showed that the intramedullary nail fixation maintained the initial stability and structural integrity of the implants at early stage,promoting the osteogenic process both guided and induced by the BCP *** 9 months postoperatively,good integration between the implants and host bone was observed,and a large amount of newborn bones formed,accompanying with the degradation of the *** 18 months postoperatively,almost the complete new bone substitution in the defect area was *** maximum bending strength of the repaired bone defects reached to the 100% of normal femur at 18 months *** results demonstrated the good potential of osteoinductive BCP bioceramics in the regenerative repair of large load-bearing bone *** current study could provide an effective method to treat the clinical large segmental bone defects.

Phototropin （phot）-mediated signaling initiated by blue light （BL） plays a critical role in optimizing photosyn- thetic light capture at the plasma membrane （PM） in plants. However, the mechanisms underlying the regu- lation of phot activity at the PM in response to BL remain largely unclear. In this study, by single-particle tracking and stepwise photobleaching analysis of photl-GFP proteins we demonstrated that in the dark photl proteins remain in an inactive state and mostly exist as monomers. Dimerization and the diffusion rate of photl-GFP increased in a dose-dependent manner in response to BL. In contrast, BL did not affect the lateral diffusion of kinase-inactive photlD806N-GFP but did enhance its dimerization, suggesting that photl dimerization is independent of phosphorylation. Forster resonance energy transfer-fluorescence life- time imaging microscopy analysis revealed that the interaction between photl-GFP and a marker of sterol- rich lipid environments, AtRem1.3-mCherry, was enhanced with increased time of BL treatment. However, this BL-dependent interaction was not obvious in plants co-expressing phot1D806N-GFP and AtRem1.3- mCherry, indicating that BL facilitates the translocation of functional photl-GFP into AtRem1.3-1abeled microdomains to activate phot-mediated signaling. Conversely, sterol depletion attenuated photl-GFP dynamics, dimerization, and phosphorylation. Taken together, these results indicate that membrane micro- domains act as organizing platforms essential for the proper function of activated photl at the PM.

Associations between smoking cessation and depression among the population in Northwest China

Many studies have indicated a relationship between smoking cessation and a history of depression. However, few studies have examined the association between smoking cessation and current depression and even fewer evidence come from China's Mainland. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of smoking quitters, the correlates of successful smoking cessation, and its relationship with depressive symptoms in Northwest China. Methods: A total of 7,644 subjects who met the study’s entry criteria were randomly selected from the urban areas of three provinces in Northwest China and interviewed using standardized assessment tools, including basic characteristics of households and detailed information on family members. All respondents provided informed consent. Results: people with depression symptom have a more than 1.5-fold risk of abstinence from smoking than those without depression (OR=1.54;95% CI, 1.2 to 1.9) and the likelihood ratio test for two models reach statistical significance (x2=13.2, p<0.001). Smoking quitters have a more than 1.5-fold risk of having depressive symptoms than current smokers (OR=1.54;95% CI, 1.2 to 1.9) and the likelihood ratio test for two models is also statistically significant (x2=6449.85, p<0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of smoking quitters in urban areas of Northwest China is very low. After controlling certain confounders, smoking cessation is associated with current depressive symptoms. More rigorous surveys are needed to elucidate the barriers to smoking cessation in China. Government bodies in China should implement appropriate strategies and execute effective measures to mitigate its harmful consequences.

Background:Over the past few decades,a series of major challenges to global health have successively emerged,which call for China’s deeper engagement in global health *** this context,the China-UK Global Health Support Programme(GHSP)was launched in 2012 with about 12 million pounds funded by the United ***:The GHSP was expected to explore a new type of China-UK partnership to strengthen the cooperation in global health,and enhance China’s capacity to engage in global health governance and provide effective development assistance in health(DAH),in order to jointly improve global health *** design and implementation:The GHSP was programmed to support capacity building activities in Chinese experience distillation,DAH,global health governance and pilot partnership at national and institutional levels between October 2012 and March *** activities were assigned to different project implementing agencies(PIAs)and their project cooperative agencies(PCAs)or pilot areas,and were then implemented under the guidance and management by the strategic oversight committee and the project management office of GHSP *** achievements:At the national level,the GHSP held five rounds of China-UK high-level dialogues,conducted studies on China Global Health Strategies to provide robust evidence for developing and issuing relevant national policies,and supported the establishment of the China Global Health *** the institutional level,the GHSP funded a series of activities in research,training,international exchange and pilots etc.,produced a large number of high-quality research outputs and policy briefings,cultivated a group of PIAs and individual researchers,facilitated the partnership building between the PIAs and PCAs,enhanced the practical ability of Chinese institutions to conduct overseas DAH,and improved the health service delivery and outcomes in pilot areas of three Asian and African *** implications

Previous studies have shown that PRDX5 and Nrf2 are antioxidant proteins related to abnormal reactive oxidative species(ROS).PRDX5 and Nrf2 play a critical role in the progression of inﬂammations and *** combination of PRDX5 and Nrf2 was examined by Co-immunoprecipitation,western blotting and Immunohistochemistry.H2O2 was applied to affect the production of ROS and induced multi-resistant protein 1(MRP1)expression in NSCLC *** zebraﬁsh models mainly investigated the synergistic effects of PRDX5 and Nrf2 on lung cancer drug resistance under oxidative *** showed that PRDX5 and Nrf2 form a complex and signiﬁcantly increase the NSCLC tissues compared to adjacent *** oxidative stress improved the combination of PRDX5 and *** demonstrated that the synergy between PRDX5 and Nrf2 is positively related to the proliferation and drug resistance of NSCLC cells in the zebraﬁsh *** conclusion,our data indicated that PRDX5 could bind to Nrf2 and has a synergistic effect with ***,in the zebraﬁsh models,PRDX5 and Nrf2 have signiﬁcant regulatory impacts on lung cancer progression and drug resistance activities under oxidative stress.
