Improving the understanding of the influencing factors on sea level based on wavelet coherence and partial wavelet coherence

Relationship between sea level change and a single climate indicator has been widely discussed.However,few studies focused on the relationship between monthly mean sea level(MMSL)and several key impact factors,including CO_(2) concentration,sea ice area,and sunspots,on various time scales.In addition,research on the independent relationship between climate factors and sea level on various time scales is lacking,especially when the dependence of climate factors on Nino 3.4 is excluded.Based on this,we use wavelet coherence(WC)and partial wavelet coherence(PWC)to establish a relationship between MMSL and its influencing factors.The WC results show that the influence of climate indices on MMSL has strong regional characteristics.The significant correlation between Southern Hemisphere sea ice area and MMSL is opposite to that between Northern Hemisphere sea ice area and MMSL.The PWC results show that after removing the influence of Nino 3.4,the significant coherent regions of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO),Dipole Mode Index(DMI),Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO),and Southern Oscillation Index(SOI)decrease to varying degrees on different time scales in different regions,demonstrating the influence of Nino 3.4.Our work emphasizes the interrelationship and independent relationship between MMSL and its influencing factors on various time scales and the use of PWC and WC to describe this relationship.The study has an important reference significance for selecting the best predictors of sea level change or climate systems.

Digital technology-driven smart society governance mechanism and practice exploration

A smart society is an advanced form of society following agricultural society,industrial society,and information society,with digital data processing system as its main carrier.However,the governance of a smart society still faces many challenges.In view of this problem,first,this research constructs a smart society governance modernization strategy.Second,the innovation mode of a society governance mechanism driven by digital technology is proposed,including the precise intellectual control of a digital twin,the intelligent ubiquitous sensing of the Internet of Things,the empowerment remodeling of a blockchain and the livelihood service of artificial intelligence.Third,this study systematically explores the practice of smart society governance modernization from the aspects of basic information platform construction,evaluation system construction,application demonstration of epidemic prevention and control driven by big data,support of spatial intelligence and artificial intelligence technology for people’s livelihood,smart campus,public resources,and data governance application demonstration to provide theoretical guidance for promoting digital technology innovation in the process of the governance of a smart society.

Internet of Things (IoT)–blockchain-enabled pharmaceutical supply chain resilience in the post-pandemic era

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the current operating environment of pharmaceutical supply chain (PSC) has rapidly changed and faced increasing risks of disruption. The Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain not only help enhance the efficiency of PSC operations in the information technology domain but also address complex related issues and improve the visibility, flexibility, and transparency of these operations. Although IoT and blockchain have been widely examined in the areas of supply chain and logistics management, further work on PSC is expected by the public to enhance its resilience. To respond to this call, this paper combines a literature review with semi-structured interviews to investigate the characteristics of PSC, the key aspects affecting PSC, and the challenges faced by PSC in the post-pandemic era. An IoT–blockchain-integrated hospital-side oriented PSC management model is also developed. This paper highlights how IoT and blockchain technology can enhance supply chain resilience and provides a reference on how PSC members can cope with the associated risks.

Stability of water yield in watersheds

The hydrological system of a watershed is intricately influenced by both underlying characteristics and climate conditions.Understanding the variability in water yield is essential for effective water resources management and water security in the context of changing environments.In this study,we adopted the Budyko framework and leveraged simulations from the CMIP6 model to investigate the compensation effects of climate and underlying characteristics on watershed water yield.Based on Taylor expansion and Budyko framework,we estimated the sensitivity of watershed water yield to climate and underlying characteristics(the first-and second-order partial derivatives).By combining external watershed characteristics(e.g.,water yield ratios and underlying characteristics)with internal sensitivity coefficients,this study further used vine copula and principal component analysis to quantify the stability of watershed water yield.Our findings show:(1)Water-yield changes related to underlying characteristics could be offset by climate-related water-yield changes across all climate zones,maintaining the water yield ratio steady(i.e.,the compensation effects).(2)However,global watersheds will turn more sensitive to underlying characteristics and less sensitive to climate variation in the future.Both climate-and underlying-related sensitivities increase in watersheds with arid climates.(3)The stability of watershed water yield will gradually diminish in the future.From 1901–1950to 2051–2100,the global stability of 280 watersheds drops from 0.054 to 0.021(i.e.,stability index identified by the joint probability).Particularly,the largest change in stability of water yield reaches-0.347±0.18 in arid regions.In semi-arid,semihumid,and humid regions,the changes are-0.039±0.010,-0.028±0.005,and-0.005±0.002,respectively.The findings provide a reference for the future sustainable water resources development under climate change,highlighting the vulnerability of the water resources in arid and semi-arid watersheds.

The fundamental goal of water quality engineering is to ensure water safety to humans and the environment.Traditional water quality engineering consists of monitoring,evaluation,and control of key water quality parameters.This approach provides some vital insights into water quality,however,most of these parameters do not account for pollutant mixtures-a reality that terminal water users face,nor do most of these parameters have a direct connection with the human health safety of waters.This puts the real health-specific effects of targeted water pollutant monitoring and engineering control in question.To focus our attention to one of the original goals of water quality engineering-human health and environmental protection,we advocate here the toxicity-oriented water quality monitoring and control.This article presents some of our efforts towards such goal.Specifically,complementary to traditional water quality parameters,we evaluated the water toxicity using high sensitivity toxicological endpoints,and subsequently investigated the performance of some of the water treatment strategies in modulating the water toxicity.Moreover,we implemented the toxicity concept into existing water treatment design theory to facilitate toxicity-oriented water quality control designs.Suggestions for the next steps are also discussed.We hope our work will intrigue water quality scientists and engineers to improve and embrace the mixture water pollutant and toxicological evaluation and engineering control.

Evaluation and attribution of trends in compound dry-hot events for major river basins in China

Concurrent compound dry and hot events(CDHEs)amplified more damange on the ecosystems and human society than individual extremes.Under climate change,compound dry and hot events become more frequent on a global scale.This paper proposes a mathematical method to quantitatively attribute changes of CDHEs to changes of precipitation,change in temperature and change in the dependence between precipitation and temperature.The attribution is achieved by formulating the total differential equation of the return period of CDHEs among Meta-gaussian model.A case study of China is devised based on monthly precipitation and temperature data during the period from 1921 to 2020 for 80 major river basins.It is found that temperature is the main driving factor of increases in CDHEs for 49 major river basins in China,except for the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River.In West China,precipitation changes drove the increase in CDHEs in 18 river basins(23%),particularly in parts of North Xinjiang,Qinghai and Gansu.On the other hand,dependence between precipitation and temperature dominated changes of CDHEs in 13 river basins(16%)of China with other factors,including parts of South China,East China and Northwestern China.Furthermore,changes in both the mean and spread of precipitation and temperature can also contribute to changes in CDHEs.

EXTENSION OF THE TOPSIS METHOD BASED ON PROSPECT THEORY AND TRAPEZOIDAL INTUITIONISTIC FUZZY NUMBERS FOR GROUP DECISION MAKING

Considering the decision maker＇s risk psychological factors and information ambiguity under uncertainty, a novel TOPSIS based on prospect theory （PT） and trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy numbers （YrIFNs） for group decision making is investigated, in which the criteria values and the criteria weights take the form of TrIFNs, and weights of decision makers are unknown. Firstly, distance measures for TrIFNs are used to induce value function under trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy environment. Secondly, the concepts of distance measures and trapezoidal intuitionistie fuzzy weighted averaging operator are employed to induce the weights of decision makers and thus the decision makers＇ options can be aggregated. Then the PT-based separation measures and relative closeness coefficient are defined and an algorithm for ranking alternatives under trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy environment is proposed. Finally, a numerical example further illustrates the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed TOPSIS method.

Cotton flooding and drought analysis regarding growth stages in Hubei,China,using a daily agrometeorological index

Cotton yield is restricted worldwide by flooding and drought that occur across various growth stages.In this study,cotton flooding and drought in Hubei(a major cotton-production province in China)from 1961 to 2019 were analyzed regarding growth stages through a daily index named the standardized antecedent precipitation evapotranspiration index(SAPEI).In addition,the impacts of flooding and drought on cotton climatic yield were quantified using multiple regression models.The results showed that the temporal trends of cotton flooding and drought intensities were generally smooth,except for an obvious downward trend for cotton drought intensity at the flowering and boll-forming stage.Additionally,cotton drought intensity varied more drastically than that of flooding over the years.Cotton-flooding proneness was much greater than cotton-drought proneness at all growth stages,and the most flooding-prone and drought-prone periods were identified as the flowering and boll-forming stage and the budding stage,respectively.In terms of spatial distribution,northeastern Hubei and southwestern Hubei were most prone to flooding and drought,respectively.The SAPEI-based regression model(R2=0.490,p<0.001),obviously outperforming the SPEI-based model(R2=0.278,p<0.05),revealed that both cotton flooding and drought exhibited negatively significant effects on cotton climatic yield and that the yield-reducing effect of cotton flooding was much greater than that of drought.Moreover,when growth stages were further considered using regression analysis,only the flowering and boll-forming stage was detected with a significant yield-reducing effect of cotton flooding.In conclusion,the SAPEI can effectively assist in monitoring cotton flooding and drought;cotton flooding,especially during the flowering and boll-forming stage and that occurring in northeastern Hubei,is the key issue for cotton field water management in Hubei.

Osteology of Quasipaa robertingeri(Anura:Dicroglossidae)

The objectives of this study are to present a detailed and comprehensive description of the osteology of Quasipaa robertingeri （Anura： Dicroglossidae）, to provide osteological evidence for taxonomy, and to explore the adaptive traits of Q. robertingeri. We comprehensively studied the osteology of 2 adult specimens （1 male 98A00351 and 1 female 98A0041） of Q. robertingeri using conventional methods. Our osteological examination of Q. robertingeri shows that 1） the nasals are large and connect with one another medially; 2） the sphenethmoid is completely covered by the nasals and the frontopatietals, and thus it is not exposed dorsally; 3） the vomerine teeth are well-developed; 4） the anterior parts of the diapophyses＇ of the presacral II protrude forward in the male, the same observation was made in the presacrals II and III in the female; 5） the pectoral girdle is firmisternal; 6） the omosternum is fan-shaped posteriorly, and almost equal to the length of the mesosternum; 7） the xiphistemum is W-shaped with a deep incision posteriorly; 8） the humerus of the male is more developed in the crista ventralis, the crista medialis, and the crista lateralis; 9） the metacarpal II of the male presents with a nuptial tuber; and 10） the distal phalanges of the digits are anchorshaped. Ultimately, the unique characteristics listed are most likely adaptations to the environment and amplexus of Q. robertingeri.

A primal perspective for indefinite kernel SVM problem

Indefinite kernel support vector machine(IKSVM)has recently attracted increasing attentions in machine learning.Since IKSVM essentially is a non-convex problem,existing algorithms either change the spectrum of indefinite kernel directly but risking losing some valuable information or solve the dual form of IKSVM whereas suffering from a dual gap problem.In this paper,we propose a primal perspective for solving the problem.That is,we directly focus on the primal form of IKSVM and present a novel algorithm termed as IKSVM-DC for binary and multi-class classification.Concretely,according to the characteristics of the spectrum for the indefinite kernel matrix,IKSVM-DC decomposes the primal function into the subtraction of two convex functions as a difference of convex functions(DC)programming.To accelerate convergence rate,IKSVM-DC combines the classical DC algorithm with a line search step along the descent direction at each iteration.Furthermore,we construct a multi-class IKSVM model which can classify multiple classes in a unified form.A theoretical analysis is then presented to validate that IKSVM-DC can converge to a local minimum.Finally,we conduct experiments on both binary and multi-class datasets and the experimental results show that IKSVM-DC is superior to other state-of-the-art IKSVM algorithms.
