Two types of Hepialus larvae with different diets were distinguished in the Sejila Mountain,Tibetan Plateau based on the stable carbon isotope data of the host Hepialus larva of Cordyceps sinensis and its closely adjacent tender plant roots and humus *** I is the larva chiefly fed by soil humus,and characterized by the δ 13C values of -22.6‰ to-23.4‰,and more than -23.4‰ in its *** II is the larva chiefly fed by tender plant roots,and characterized by the δ 13C values of-24.6‰ to -27.6‰,and less than -24.6‰ in its *** result has exceeded the traditional understanding that their food sources only come from the tender plant roots,and may provide evidence for choosing cheap and high-quality foods and further establishing artificial habitats in their large-scale reproduction.

With rapid industrialization and agricultural modernization in the past two decades, the Yangtze Delta Region in China has been one of the regions in the world most influenced by human activity. How has the economic development impacted on ecosystem, environment, agriculture and regional climate in this region ？ What are the mechanisms of the interactive processes and feedbacks？ What will be the future changes under different development scenarlos？ These are questions of critical importance to sustain the rate of social and economic development. A Major Project, The Physical-Chemical Processes in the Lower Atmosphere and Their Interaction with the Ecological System over Yangtze Delta, as one of the Ninth Five-Year Major Programs （1996-2000） funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, NSFC, just focused on those questions. Under the leadership of Prof. zhou Xiuji, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences this project has made significant achievements and great progress in answering the above questions.

Somatic embryogenesis receptor kinase（SERK）proteins play pivotal roles in regulation of plant development and immunity. The rice genome contains two SERK genes,OsSerk1 and OsSerk2. We previously demonstrated that OsSerk2 is required for rice Xa21-mediated resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae（Xoo） and for normal development. Here we report the molecular characterization of OsSerk1. Overexpression of OsSerk1 results in a semi-dwarf phenotype whereas silencing of OsSerk1 results in a reduced angle of the lamina joint. OsSerk1 is not required for rice resistance to Xoo or Magnaporthe oryzae. Overexpression of Os Serk1 in OsSerk2-silenced lines complements phenotypes associated with brassinosteroid（BR） signaling defects, but not the disease resistance phenotype mediated by Xa21. In yeast, OsSERK1 interacts with itself forming homodimers, and also interacts with the kinase domains of OsSERK2 and BRI1, ***1 is a functional protein kinase capable of auto-phosphorylation in vitro. We conclude that, whereas OsSERK2 regulates both rice development and immunity, OsSERK1 functions in rice development but not immunity to Xoo and M. oryzae.

Discovery of drugs rapidly and effectively is an important aspect for Alzheimer's disease(AD).In this study,a novel high-throughput screening(HTS)method aims at screening the small-molecules with amyloid-β(Aβ)binding affinity from natural medicines,based on the combinational use of biolayer interferometry(BLI)and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode-array detector and quadrupole/time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC−DAD-Q/TOF-MS/MS)has been firstly ***,the components in natural medicines disassociated from biotinylated Aβwere collected to analyze their potential Aβbinding affinity by UHPLC−DAD-Q/TOF-MS/***,baicalein was confirmed to exhibit the highest binding affinity with Aβin Scutellaria ***,polyporenic acid C(PPAC),dehydrotumulosic acid(DTA),and tumulosic acid(TA)in Kai-Xin-San(KXS)were also identified as potent Aβ*** bioactivity validations indicated that these compounds could inhibit Aβfibrillation,improve the viability in Aβ-induced PC-12 cells,and decrease the Aβcontent and improve the behavioral ability in Caenorhabditis *** molecular docking results confirmed that PPAC,DTA,and TA possessed good binding properties with Aβ.Collectively,the present study has provided a novel and effective HTS method for the identification of natural inhibitors on Aβfibrillation,which may accelerate the process on anti-AD drugs discovery and development.

Dear Editor, Multiple myeloma (MM) is a disease characterized by the clonal expansion of malignant plasma cells in the marrow, leading to anemia, hypercalcemia, bone lesion, and renal dysfunction [1]. Immunoglobulin D (IgD) myeloma is a rare subtype of MM, accounting for approximately 1% to 2% of all MM patients [2]. It occurs at a young age, often accom-panied with a high disease burden and short median sur-vival (18-21 months) [3, 4]. Several studies have suggested that in patients with IgD subtype, the outcomes of those who have had undergone autologous stem cell transplanta-tion (ASCT) were superior than those treated with chemo-therapy alone [5, 6]. However, these have been debatable as other reports have displayed opposite results [7, 8].

Observational analyses show that the equatorial trough in the western North Pacific (WNP) is a well-known origin for tropical cyclones (TC) which have tended to weaken in intensity and decrease in number during the last several decades under global warming. A scientific problem then arises as to why higher sea surface temperatures (SSTs), one of the necessary conditions for typhoon genesis, can cause a weakened equatorial trough and a decreased TC number. In this paper, the WNP is taken as an example to illustrate a possible mechanism for the above-mentioned seemingly counterintuitive phenomena and explain the causality between the unusually heterogeneous pattern of SSTs in a warming environment and TC number in the WNP. This mechanism is based substantially on the second law of thermodynamics.
