Hydroxyl radical production by abiotic oxidation of pyrite under estuarine conditions:The effects of aging,seawater anions and illumination

Pyrite is widely distributed in estuarine sediments as an inexpensive natural Fenton-like reagent,however,the mechanism on the hydroxyl radical(HO^(·))production by pyrite under estuarine environmental conditions is still poorly understood.The batch experiments were performed to investigate the effects of estuarine conditions including aging(in air,in water),seawater anions(Cl^(-),Br^(-)and HCO_(3)^(-))and light on the HO^(·)production by pyrite oxidation.The one-electron transfer dominated the process from O_(2) to HO^(·)induced by oxidation of pyrite.The Fe(oxyhydr)oxide coatings on the surface of pyrite aged in air and water consumed hydrogen peroxide while mediating the electron transfer,and the combined effect of the two resulted in a suppression of HO^(·)production in the early stage of aging and a promotion of HO^(·)production in the later stage of aging.Corrosion of the surface oxide layers by aggressive anions was the main reason for the inhibition of HO^(·)production by Cl^(-)and Br^(-),and the generation of Cl^(·)and Br^(·)may also play a role in the scavenging of HO^(·).HCO_(3)^(-)increased the average rate of HO^(·)production through surface-CO_(2) complexes formed by adsorption on the surface of pyrite.The significant enhancement of HO^(·)production under light was attributed to the formation of photoelectrons induced by photochemical reactions on pyrite and its surface oxide layers.These findings provide new insights into the environmental chemical behavior of pyrite in the estuary and enrich the understanding of natural remediation of estuarine environments.

An uncertainty investigation for liner impedance eduction methods

Impedance eduction methods have been developed for decades to meet the increasing need for high-quality impedance data in the design and optimization of acoustic liners.To this end,it is important to fully investigate the uncertainty problem,to which only limited attention has been devoted so far.This paper considers the possibility of acoustically-induced structural vibration as a nonnegligible uncertainty or error source in impedance eduction experiments.As the frequency moves away from the resonant frequency,with the increase in the value of cavity reactance,the acoustic particle velocity inside liner orifices possibly decreases to the extent comparable to the vibration velocity of liner facing sheet.Thus,the acoustically-induced vibration,although generally being weak except at the inherent structural frequencies,may considerably affect the impedance eduction results near the anti-resonant frequency where the liner has poor absorption.To demonstrate the effect of structural vibration,the vibration velocity of liner facing sheet is estimated from the experimentally educed admittance of the liner samples whose orifices are sealed with tape.Further,a three-dimensional numerical model is set up,in which normal particle velocity is introduced over the solid portion of liner facing sheet to imitate structural vibration,rather than directly solving the acoustic-structural coupling problem.As shown by the results,the vibration of liner facing sheet,whose velocity is as small as estimated by the experiment,can result in anomalous deviation of the educed impedance from the impedance model near the anti-resonant frequency.The trend that the anomalous deviation varies with frequency is numerically captured.

Dynamic characteristics of multi-span spinning beams with elastic constraints under an axial compressive force

A theoretical model for the multi-span spinning beams with elastic constraints under an axial compressive force is proposed.The displacement and bending angle functions are represented through an improved Fourier series,which ensures the continuity of the derivative at the boundary and enhances the convergence.The exact characteristic equations of the multi-span spinning beams with elastic constraints under an axial compressive force are derived by the Lagrange equation.The efficiency and accuracy of the present method are validated in comparison with the finite element method(FEM)and other methods.The effects of the boundary spring stiffness,the number of spans,the spinning velocity,and the axial compressive force on the dynamic characteristics of the multi-span spinning beams are studied.The results show that the present method can freely simulate any boundary constraints without modifying the solution process.The elastic range of linear springs is larger than that of torsion springs,and it is not affected by the number of spans.With an increase in the axial compressive force,the attenuation rate of the natural frequency of a spinning beam with a large number of spans becomes larger,while the attenuation rate with an elastic boundary is lower than that under a classic simply supported boundary.

Optimal synthesis of heat-integrated distillation configurations using the two-column superstructure

In the realm of the synthesis of heat-integrated distillation configurations,the conventional approach for exploring more heat integration possibilities typically entails the splitting of a single column into a twocolumn configuration.However,this approach frequently necessitates tedious enumeration procedures,resulting in a considerable computational burden.To surmount this formidable challenge,the present study introduces an innovative remedy:The proposition of a superstructure that encompasses both single-column and multiple two-column configurations.Additionally,a simultaneous optimization algorithm is applied to optimize both the process parameters and heat integration structures of the twocolumn configurations.The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through a case study focusing on industrial organosilicon separation.The results underscore that the superstructure methodology not only substantially mitigates computational time compared to exhaustive enumeration but also furnishes solutions that exhibit comparable performance.

Comparative Study on Different Methods for Prediction of Thermal Insulation Performance of Thermal Barrier Coating Used on Turbine Blades

As turbine inlet temperature gets higher and higher,thermal barrier coating(TBC) is more and more widely used in turbine blades.For turbine blades with TBC,it is of great significance to evaluate the temperature distribution of its substrate metal quickly and accurately,especially during the design stage.With different degrees of simplification such as whether to consider the change of the geometric size of the fluid domain by TBC and whether to consider the planar heat conduction in TBC,three different methods used in conjugate heat transfer(CHT) simulation to model the TBC of the turbine blades have been developed and widely used by researchers.However,little research has been conducted to investigate the influence of the three methods on the temperature distribution of turbine blade.To fill this gap,three geometric models were designed.They are a solid conduction model with a substrate metal layer and a TBC layer,a transonic turbine vane with internal cooling and TBC,and a plate cylindrical film hole cooling model with TBC.Different methods were used in these geometric models and their differences were carefully analyzed and discussed.The result shows that for the conduction model used in this paper,with the same TBC surface temperature distribution,the difference between the three methods is very small and can be ignored.For a transonic turbine vane with internal cooling,regarding the local maximum temperature of the substrate-TBC interface,the largest difference between the method in which TBC is considered as a thermal resistance or a virtual layer of cells and the method in which three-dimensional heat conduction equation of TBC is solved occurs at the trailing edge.The difference near the leading edge is below 2K.When employed to the film cooling model,the difference of the laterally averaged temperature of the substrate-TBC interface can be 8 K which is mainly due to the change of the length to diameter ratio of the film cooling hole by TBC.If the substrate thickness is reduced by the thickness of TBC wh

Exploring the potential of olivine-containing copper-nickel slag for carbon dioxide mineralization in cementitious materials

Water-quenched copper-nickel metallurgical slag enriched with olivine minerals exhibits promising potential for the production of CO_(2)-mineralized cementitious materials.In this work,copper-nickel slag-based cementitious material(CNCM)was synthesized by using different chemical activation methods to enhance its hydration reactivity and CO_(2) mineralization capacity.Different water curing ages and carbonation conditions were explored related to their carbonation and mechanical properties development.Meanwhile,thermogravimetry differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction methods were applied to evaluate the CO_(2) adsorption amount and carbonation products of CNCM.Microstructure development of carbonated CNCM blocks was examined by backscattered electron imaging(BSE)with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry.Results showed that among the studied samples,the CNCM sample that was subjected to water curing for 3 d exhibited the highest CO_(2) sequestration amount of 8.51wt%at 80℃and 72 h while presenting the compressive strength of 39.07 MPa.This result indicated that 1 t of this CNCM can sequester 85.1 kg of CO_(2) and exhibit high compressive strength.Although the addition of citric acid did not improve strength development,it was beneficial to increase the CO_(2) diffusion and adsorption amount under the same carbonation conditions from BSE results.This work provides guidance for synthesizing CO_(2)-mineralized cementitious materials using large amounts of metallurgical slags containing olivine minerals.

Interactive effect of thermal aging and proton irradiation on microstructural evolution and hardening ofδ-ferrite in 308L stainless steel weld metal

In the harsh service environment of high temperature and intense neutron irradiation in water-cooled nuclear reactors,the austenitic stainless steel weld overlay cladding on the inner surface of the reactor pressure vessel suffers from thermal aging and irradiation damage simultaneously,which can induce microstructural evolution and hardening of the material.Since it is quite difficult to achieve this simul-taneous process out of the pile,two kinds of combined experiments,i.e.,post-irradiation thermal aging and post-aging irradiation were performed on 308 L stainless steel weld metals in this work.The interactive effect of thermal aging and proton irradiation on microstructural evolution and hardening ofδ-ferrite in 308 L weld metal was investigated by combining atom probe tomography,transmission elec-tron microscopy and nanoindentation tests.The results revealed that thermal aging could eliminate the dislocation loops induced by irradiation and affect the phase transition process by accelerating spinodal decomposition and G-phase precipitation,thus enhancing hardening of irradiatedδ-ferrite.For the effect of irradiation on the microstructure and hardening of thermally agedδ-ferrite,however,intensive collision cascades can intensify G-phase precipitation and dislocation loop formation but decrease spinodal decomposition,leading to a limited effect on hardening of thermally agedδ-ferrite.Furthermore,the interaction of thermal aging and irradiation can promote G-phase precipitation.Meanwhile,the interaction can causeδ-ferrite hardening,which is mainly influenced by spinodal decomposition,followed by G-phase and dislocation loops,where spinodal decomposition and G-phase cause hardening by inducing strain fields.

Motion Enhanced Model Based on High-Level Spatial Features

Action recognition has become a current research hotspot in computer vision.Compared to other deep learning methods,Two-stream convolutional network structure achieves better performance in action recognition,which divides the network into spatial and temporal streams,using video frame images as well as dense optical streams in the network,respectively,to obtain the category labels.However,the two-stream network has some drawbacks,i.e.,using dense optical flow as the input of the temporal stream,which is computationally expensive and extremely time-consuming for the current extraction algorithm and cannot meet the requirements of real-time tasks.In this paper,instead of the dense optical flow,the Motion Vectors(MVs)are used and extracted from the compressed domain as temporal features,which greatly reduces the extraction time.However,the motion pattern that MVs contain is coarser,which leads to low accuracy.In this paper,we propose two strategies to improve the accuracy:firstly,an accumulated strategy is used to enhance the motion information and continuity of MVs;secondly,knowledge distillation is used to fuse the spatial information into the temporal stream so that more information(e.g.,motion details,colors,etc.)is obtainable.Experimental results show that the accuracy of MV can be greatly improved by the strategies proposed in this paper and the final recognition for human actions accuracy is guaranteed without using optical flow.

Blockchain-Based Certificateless Bidirectional Authenticated Searchable Encryption Scheme in Cloud Email System

Traditional email systems can only achieve one-way communication,which means only the receiver is allowed to search for emails on the email server.In this paper,we propose a blockchain-based certificateless bidirectional authenticated searchable encryption model for a cloud email system named certificateless authenticated bidirectional searchable encryption(CL-BSE)by combining the storage function of cloud server with the communication function of email server.In the new model,not only can the data receiver search for the relevant content by generating its own trapdoor,but the data owner also can retrieve the content in the same way.Meanwhile,there are dual authentication functions in our model.First,during encryption,the data owner uses the private key to authenticate their identity,ensuring that only legal owner can generate the keyword ciphertext.Second,the blockchain verifies the data owner’s identity by the received ciphertext,allowing only authorized members to store their data in the server and avoiding unnecessary storage space consumption.We obtain a formal definition of CL-BSE and formulate a specific scheme from the new system model.Then the security of the scheme is analyzed based on the formalized security model.The results demonstrate that the scheme achieves multikeyword ciphertext indistinguishability andmulti-keyword trapdoor privacy against any adversary simultaneously.In addition,performance evaluation shows that the new scheme has higher computational and communication efficiency by comparing it with some existing ones.

Machine learning predicts atomistic structures of multielement solid surfaces for heterogeneous catalysts in variable environments

Solid surfaces usually reach thermodynamic equilibrium through particle exchange with their environment under reactive conditions.A prerequisite for understanding their functionalities is detailed knowledge of the surface composition and atomistic geometry under working conditions.Owing to the large number of possible Miller indices and terminations involved in multielement solids,extensive sampling of the compositional and conformational space needed for reliable surface energy estimation is beyond the scope of ab initio calculations.Here,we demonstrate,using the case of iron carbides in environments with varied carbon chemical potentials,that the stable surface composition and geometry of multielement solids under reactive conditions,which involve large compositional and conformational spaces,can be predicted at ab initio accuracy using an approach that combines the bond valence model,Gaussian process regression,and ab initio thermodynamics.Determining the atomistic structure of surfaces under working conditions paves the way toward identifying the true active sites of multielement catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.
