In situ Remediation of Petroleum Contaminated Groundwater by Permeable Reactive Barrier with Hydrothermal Palygorskite as Medium

The permeable reactive barrier（PRB） has proven to be a costeffective technique to remediate the petro leum contaminated groundwater at a northeast field site in China. In this study, the geology, hydrogeology and con tamination characterization of the field site were investigated and the natural hydrothermal palygorskite was chosen as a reactive medium. Furthermore, the adsorption of the total petroleum hydrocarbons（TPH） in the groundwater onto hydrothermal palygorskite and the adsorption kinetics were investigated. The results indicate that the removal rates of TPH, benzene, naphthalene and phenantharene could all reach up to 90% by hydrothermal palygorskite with a diameter of 0.25-2.00 mm that had been thermally pretreated at 140 ℃. The adsorption of TPH onto hydrothermal palygorskite after pretreatment followed a pseudosecondorder kinetic model and a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, suggesting that the theoretic adsorption capacity of hydrothermal palygorskite for adsorbate could be 4.2 g/g. Scan ning electron microscopy（SEM）, infrared spectroscopy（IR）, Xray diffraction（XRD） and Xray fluorescence spec troscopy（XRF） were carried out to analyze the adsorption mechanism. The results reveal that hydrothermal palygors kite is a fibrous silicate mineral enriched in Mg and A1 with large surface area and porosity. The dense cluster acicular and fibrous crystal of hydrothermal palygorskite, and its effect polar group OH played an important role in the physical and chemical adsorption processes of it for contaminants. This study has demonstrated hydrothermal paly gorskite is a reliable reactive medium for in situ remediation of petroleum contaminated groundwater at field sites.

Translocator protein ligand, YL-IPA08, attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced depression-like behavior by promoting neural regeneration

Translocator protein has received attention for its involvement in the pathogenesis of depression. This study assessed the effects of the new translocator protein ligand, YL-IPA08, on alleviating inflammation-induced depression-like behavior in mice and investigated its mechanism of action. Mice were intracerebroventricularly injected with 1, 10, 100 or 1000 ng lipopolysaccharide. The tail-suspension test and the forced swimming test confirmed that 100 ng lipopolysaccharide induced depression-like behavior. A mouse model was then established by intraventricular injection of 100 ng lipopolysaccharide. On days 16-24 after model establishment, mice were intragastrically administered 3 mg/kg YL-IPA08 daily. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine BrdU and NeuN expression in the hippocampus. YL-IPA08 effectively reversed the depression-like behavior of lipopolysaccharide-treated mice, restored body mass, increased the number of BrdU-positive cells, and the number and proportion of BrdU and NeuN double-positive cells. These findings indicate that YL-IPA08 can attenuate lipopolysaccharide-induced depression-like behavior in mice by promoting the formation of hippocampal neurons.

Positive effects of music therapist's selected auditory stimulation on the autonomic nervous system of patients with disorder of consciousness: a randomized controlled trial

Protective effects of soybean phospholipid liposome on glutamate-induced nerve cell injury in vitro

It has been previously reported that soybean phosphatide could reduce the cerebral ischemia damage obviously. Whether soybean phospholipid liposome （SPL） can protect cerebral cortical neurons cultured in vitro from glutamate （Glu）-induced neurotoxicity, particularly nerve cell membrane damage has not been fully investigated. OBJECTIVE： To study the protective effects of SPL on Glu-induced neurotoxicity of neurons in culture, and to discuss the possible mechanisms of neuroprotection. DESIGN： Randomized controlled trial. SETTING： Department of Biochemistry, Liaoning Medical University. MATERIALS： Twelve Spragne-Dawley rats, of either gender, aged 0 to 1 day, were involved in this study. Drugs and reagents： poly-L-lysine and L-glutamate were purchased from Sigma company （USA）. METHODS： The study was carried out in the Department of Biochemistry of Jinzhou Medical University from November 2004 to June 2005. Glu （ 1 X 10^- 4 mol/L ） was added to cortical neurons in injury group for 3 hours, while different concentrations of SPL （0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 g/L） were added at the same time in the SPL groups. Neurons in the normal control group were untouched. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： According to the instruction of reagent kit, lactate dehydrogenase（LDH） activity and nitric oxide（NO） content in the supernatant fluid of the culture medium were assayed, and the activity of nitric oxide synthase （NOS） and superoxide dismutase（SOD）, malonaldehyde （MDA） content in the neurocytes were also determined. RESULTS： ①Activities of LDH and NOS, as well as NO content in the supernatant fluid of injury group were significantly higher than those of normal control group （P 〈 0.01）. Influence of Trace Amount of Calponin on Smooth Muscle Myosin in Different States

Calponin (CaP), a thin filament-associated protein, is thought to be involved in modulating smooth muscle contractile activity, but the role and mechanism keep unknown. In this study, trace amount of calponin (TAC) was found to obviously influence myosin in different states in Ca2+-independent manner, suggesting a high efficient interaction between TAC and myosin. In this assay, the lowest ratio of CaP vs. myosin was 1:10,000, with the concentration of CaP 10,000-fold lower than that used previously. Myosin phosphorylation, myosin Mg2+-ATPase activity and protein binding activity were detected to determine the effects of TAC on the myosin in different states. The amount of precipitated myosin that bound to TAC was used as the index to determine the interaction between myosin and TAC in binding assay. Our data showed that in the absence of actin, TAC significantly increased the precipitation of unphosphorylated myosin, Ca2+- dependently or independently phosphorylated myosin by MLCK, and stimulated the Mg2+-ATPase activities of these myosins slightly but significantly. However, no obvious change of precipitation of myosin phospho- rylated by PKA was observed, indicating the relatively selective effect of TAC. In the presence of actin, the increase of myosin precipitations was abolished, and no obvious change of actin precipitations and actin- activated myosin Mg2+-ATPase activities were observed implicating the high efficiency of TAC on myosin being present in the absence of actin. Although we can not give conclusive comments to our results, we propose that the high efficiency of TAC-myosin interaction is present when actin is dissociated from myosin, even if CaP/myosin ratio is very low; this high efficient interaction can be abolished by actin. However, why and how TAC can possess such a high efficiency to influence myosin and how the physiological significance of the high efficiency of TAC is in regulating the interaction between myosin and actin remain to be inve
