With a deep sense of sadness and sorrow,I learned that Dr Mwelecele Ntuli Malecela,Director of WHOs Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases,passed away on 10 February 2022 after a prolonged illness at the age of 58.I would like to extend my deepest condolences for the sad loss of Dr Mwele Malecela,a well-known scientist and a long-time friend.She was among the most well-known and respected female researchers,scientists and public health leaders in Africa.

Significant disease burden is caused by infections with human liver flukes, includingClonorchis sinensis,Opisthorchis viverrini andO. felineus. Epidemiology is characterized by high burden in the male than the female, and in the elder than the younger. Chemotherapy is the mainstream for morbidity control, but it could not prevent re-infection. Mean-while, behavioral change on the dietary habit of ingesting raw freshwater fish is challenging. In this opinion, we argue why it is important to educate children for sustainable control of liver fluke infections. Then, the design, development and key messages of an educational cartoon for preventing liver fluke infections is introduced. Technical focuses are emphasized based on a pilot using the education cartoon for preventing clonorchiasis in China. Finally, how to further develop and verify this education strategy is discussed.

In 2017,China achieved the target of zero indigenous malaria case for the first time,and has been certified as malaria free by World Health Organization in 2021.To further summarize the historical achievements and technical experiences of the elimination program,a project on the Roadmap Analysis and Verification for Malaria Elimination in China was carried out.Results of the project were compiled and published as the Atlas of Malaria Transmission in China(The Atlas).The Atlas using modern digital information technologies,has been supported by various data from 24 malaria endemic provinces of China since 1950,to assess the changes in malaria epidemic patterns from 1950 to 2019 at national and provincial levels.The Atlas is designed as two volumes,including a total of 1850 thematic maps and more than 130 charts,consisting of introductory maps,thematic maps of malaria epidemic and control at national and provincial levels.It objectively and directly shows the epidemic history,evolution process,and great achievements of the national malaria control and elimination program in China.The Atlas has important reference value for summing up historical experience in the national malaria elimination program of China,and malaria control and elimination in other endemic countries in the world.

Background:Neglected tropical diseases(NTDs)have long been overlooked in the global health agenda.They are intimately related to poverty,cause important local burdens of disease,but individually do not represent global priorities.Yet,NTDs were estimated to affect close to 2 billion people at the turn of the millennium,with a collective burden equivalent to HIV/AIDS,tuberculosis,or malaria.A global response was therefore warranted.Main text:The World Health Organization(WHO)conceived an innovative strategy in the early 2000s to combat NTDs as a group of diseases,based on a combination of five public health interventions.Access to essential NTD medicines has hugely improved thanks to strong public-private partnership involving the pharmaceutical sector.The combination of a WHO NTD roadmap with clear targets to be achieved by 2020 and game-changing partner commitments endorsed in the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases,have led to unprecedented progress in the implementation of large-scale preventive treatment,case management and care of NTDs.The coming decade will see as challenges the mainstreaming of these NTD interventions into Universal Health Coverage and the coordination with other sectors to get to the roots of poverty and scale up transmissionbreaking interventions.Chinese expertise with the elimination of multiple NTDs,together with poverty reduction and intersectoral action piloted by municipalities and local governments,can serve as a model for the latter.The international community will also need to keep a specific focus on NTDs in order to further steer this global response,manage the scaling up and sustainment of NTD interventions globally,and develop novel products and implementation strategies for NTDs that are still lagging behind.Conclusions:The year 2020 will be crucial for the future of the global response to NTDs.Progress against the 2020 roadmap targets will be assessed,a new 2021–2030 NTD roadmap will be launched,and the London Declaration commitments will need to be renewed.It

Marking the end of the five-year programme initiated by the Chinese Government to lift more than 70 million people out of poverty,the year 2020 is a milestone.Poverty alleviation has moved strongly forward in China and the major health indicators are now better than the average of all middle-and high-income countries.However,the dual burden of infectious and chronic diseases remains a challenge with respect to achieving the health target in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for sustainable development goals(SDGs).In 2015,about 44%of the poor population in China were impoverished by illness but already in 2018,multi-sectoral actions delivered by the Health-related Poverty Alleviation programme had reduced the number almost by half.In the past three years 15 million poor people(98%of the poor population)with infectious and chronic diseases had been treated and taken care of thanks to financial support through multiple health insurance schemes and other governmental subsidies.This article discusses the lessons learnt with regard to health-related poverty alleviation in China with special reference to those still remaining impoverished by illness.Consolidation of the achievements reached and provision of basic needs to those still disadvantaged and in poor health will require a major improvement of accessibility to,and affordability of,health services.The next step towards enhanced productivity and better living conditions will involve upgrading of the capacity of health professionals in the poor regions,promotion of coherent efforts in health-related poverty alleviation and rural revitalization measures.As an additional measure,data monitoring and research on health poverty alleviation should be strengthened as they are essential to generate the evidence and knowledge needed to support the move in the direction envisioned by the SDGs,and the new Healthy China 2030 programme.

In the Memorandum of Understanding on Health Technology Cooperation issued in Beijing in 1978,the Ministry of Health(MOH)of China and the World Health Organization(WHO)agreed to create a series of WHO Collaborating Centres(WHOCC).The Institute of Parasitic Diseases at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences(the predecessor of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases[NIPD]at China CDC)was officially designated as a“WHO Collaborating Centre for Malaria,Schistosomiasis,and Filariasis”in 1980 based in Shanghai(1).Since then,the WHOCC for Malaria,Schistosomiasis,and Filariasis has played an important role in promoting the development of medical science in China.

Traditionally,malaria has always been considered one of the tropical diseases.This only has changed in the late 1990s,with the World Health Organization(WHO)profiling HIV,tuberculosis(TB),and malaria as priority“poverty-related”killing diseases(1).This has led to the creation of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS,Tuberculosis,and Malaria(2),that has mobilized substantial resources to advance the control of all three diseases,even if mostly in a siloed manner.

Background About half of the world's population risks contracting malaria,which despite the effective treatments available globally,remains a life-threatening affliction,particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable populations.To raise awareness,advocacy,and action towards defeating the disease,which was responsible for approximately 228 million debilitating infections and 405000 deaths at last count in 2018,the international community has,since 2008,commemorated World Malaria Day on 25 April.Events all over the world have provided opportunities for malaria affected countries to learn from each other's experiences and support each other's efforts.Likewise,it has been an occasion for development partners across all countries to showcase their efforts against malaria,reflect on successes,and assess the challenges ahead.This year the World Malaria Day takes its theme from the pan-African campaign,first launched in Senegal,known as"Zero palu!Je m'engage"or"Zero Malaria Starts with Me".
