Investigation of oil and water migrations in lacustrine oil shales using 20 MHz 2D NMR relaxometry techniques

The behavior of oil and water in tight rocks can change the distribution of oil or water in pores,which affects the production of crude oil.Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR)method is an effective and nondestructive tool for evaluating rocks with comparison and analysis both quantitatively and qualitatively.In our study,20 MHz NMR Relaxometry is used as a key technique to study the changes of water and oil behaviors in Chinese lacustrine Qingshankou shales under different saturated states(imbibition and evaporation without pressure).The results show that variation in different proton populations(water,oil and organic)can be distinguished using 2D T_(1)-T_(2)maps.The comparison among T_(1)-T_(2)maps with different saturated states shows that different signal regions changed during oil and water migrations,which the 1D NMR Relaxometry may be not easy to approach.Combined with the pyrolysis analysis,T2 shift and differences of signal regions in T_(1)-T_(2)maps can reflect properties such as wettability and composition(organic matter,clay and magnetic minerals)to some extent.This study provides better insight into oil and water behaviors in lacustrine oil shales with further understanding of 20 MHz NMR 2D T_(1)-T_(2)maps both in qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Repairing whole facial nerve defects with xenogeneic acellular nerve grafts in rhesus monkeys

Acellular nerve allografts conducted via chemical extraction have achieved satisfactory results in bridging whole facial nerve defects clinically,both in terms of branching a single trunk and in connecting multiple branches of an extratemporal segment.However,in the clinical treatment of facial nerve defects,allogeneic donors are limited.In this experiment,we exposed the left trunk and multiple branches of the extratemporal segment in six rhesus monkeys and dissected a gap of 25 mm to construct a monkey model of a whole left nerve defect.Six monkeys were randomly assigned to an autograft group or a xenogeneic acellular nerve graft group.In the autograft group,the 25-mm whole facial nerve defect was immediately bridged using an autogenous ipsilateral great auricular nerve,and in the xenogeneic acellular nerve graft group,this was done using a xenogeneic acellular nerve graft with trunk-branches.Examinations of facial symmetry,nerve-muscle electrophysiology,retrograde transport of labeled neuronal tracers,and morphology of the regenerated nerve and target muscle at 8 months postoperatively showed that the faces of the monkey appeared to be symmetrical in the static state and slightly asymmetrical during facial movement,and that they could actively close their eyelids completely.The degree of recovery from facial paralysis reached House-Brackmann grade II in both groups.Compound muscle action potentials were recorded and orbicularis oris muscles responded to electro-stimuli on the surgical side in each monkey.Fluoro Gold-labeled neurons could be detected in the facial nuclei on the injured side.Immunohistochemical staining showed abundant neurofilament-200-positive axons and soluble protein-100-positive Schwann cells in the regenerated nerves.A large number of mid-graft myelinated axons were observed via methylene blue staining and a transmission electron microscope.Taken together,our data indicate that xenogeneic acellular nerve grafts from minipigs are safe and effective for repairing whole facial nerve defects in

Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid promotes sciatic nerve repair after injury: molecular mechanism

Previous studies showed that acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid(AKBA),the active ingredient in the natural Chinese medicine Boswellia,can stimulate sciatic nerve injury repair via promoting Schwann cell proliferation.However,the underlying molecular mechanism remains poorly understood.In this study,we performed genomic sequencing in a rat model of sciatic nerve crush injury after gastric AKBA administration for 30 days.We found that the phagosome pathway was related to AKBA treatment,and brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in the neurotrophic factor signaling pathway was also highly up-regulated.We further investigated gene and protein expression changes in the phagosome pathway and neurotrophic factor signaling pathway.Myeloperoxidase expression in the phagosome pathway was markedly decreased,and brain-derived neurotrophic factor,nerve growth factor,and nerve growth factor receptor expression levels in the neurotrophic factor signaling pathway were greatly increased.Additionally,expression levels of the inflammatory factors CD68,interleukin-1β,pro-interleukin-1β,and tumor necrosis factor-αwere also decreased.Myelin basic protein-andβ3-tubulin-positive expression as well as the axon diameter-to-total nerve diameter ratio in the injured sciatic nerve were also increased.These findings suggest that,at the molecular level,AKBA can increase neurotrophic factor expression through inhibiting myeloperoxidase expression and reducing inflammatory reactions,which could promote myelin sheath and axon regeneration in the injured sciatic nerve.

Robust twin-field quantum key distribution through sending or not sending

The sending-or-not-sending(SNS) protocol is one of the most major variants of the twin-field(TF)quantum key distribution(QKD) protocol and has been realized in a 511-km field fiber, the farthest field experiment to date. In practice, however, all decoy-state methods have unavoidable source errors, and the source errors may be non-random, which compromises the security condition of the existing TF-QKD protocols. In this study, we present a general approach for efficiently calculating the SNS protocol’s secure key rate with source errors, by establishing the equivalent protocols through virtual atenuation and the tagged model. This makes the first result for TF QKD in practice where source intensity cannot be controlled exactly. Our method can be combined with the two-way classical communication method such as active odd-parity pairing to further improve the key rate. The numerical results show that if the intensity error is within a few percent, the key rate and secure distance only decrease marginally. The key rate of the recent SNS experiment in the 511-km field fiber is still positive using our method presented here, even if there is a ±9.5% intensity fluctuation. This shows that the SNS protocol is robust against source errors.

Numerical Study on the Pulsation Characteristics of An Attached Air Bubble Under A Nearby Oscillating Bubble

Numerical simulations of the non-spherical evolution of a pulsating bubble interacting with a stationary air bubble attached to a fixed structure were performed using a three-dimensional boundary integral method by implementing the mirror image method to simplify the processing of the numerical model. Code validation was accomplished by comparing the numerical results with the laboratory experimental data obtained in our previous study. Complex phenomena were observed, including three types of bubble jet forms, which depended strongly on the distance parameter with respect to the initial location of the bubble from the plate, the bubble strength parameter and the initial air bubble radius parameters. The results of the simulations provide detail insight into interesting bubble jetting phenomena,such as bubble splitting, jets moving away from the plate, and bubble shedding. The dimensionless distance parameter and the initial air bubble radius parameter play a major role in determining the shapes of two bubbles and the jetting direction. The air bubble strength parameter did not change the bubble jet direction but influenced the bubble shape.The detachment of the attached air bubble under oscillating bubble suction was easily observed for a small initial air bubble. These results showed that bubble jetting toward the plate was manipulated through the effect of attached air bubble, and that cavitation-based applications and underwater explosion bubble may benefit from this erosion mitigation approach.

Starved lubrication analysis of angular contact ball bearing based on a multi-degree-of-freedom tribo-dynamic model

When the oil supply is not adequate to maintain the ideal lubrication,angular contact ball bearing will enter into the starved lubrication regime resulting in the potential performance degradation and consequently the severe failures.To study the effects of starved lubrication on the performance of angular contact ball bearing,this paper first proposes a multi-degree-of-freedom(DOF)tribo-dynamic model by introducing five-DOF inner ring,six-DOF balls,and six-DOF cage.The model considers the starved lubrication in the ball-raceway contact and the full multi-body interactions between the bearing components.With different ball-raceway starvation degrees being analyzed,the effects of starved lubrication on the bearing tribo-dynamic performance are first revealed.By comparison,it is found that the oil film thickness,the skidding performance,and the traction forces in the ball-raceway contact are significantly influenced by the starvation degrees.It is also found that the starvation-induced change of the ball-pocket contact force is dramatical under combined loads,and the maximum contact force under this load condition increases with the increasing starvation degrees.

Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid extracted from Boswellia serrata promotes Schwann cell proliferation and sciatic nerve function recovery

Frankincense can promote blood circulation. Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid （AKBA） is a small molecule with anti-inflammatory properties that is derived from Boswellia serrata. Here, we hypothesized that it may promote regeneration of injured sciatic nerve. To address this hypothesis, we established a rat model of sciatic nerve injury using a nerve clamping method. Rats were administered AKBA once every 2 days at doses of 1.5, 3, and 6 mg/kg by intraperitoneal injection for 30 days from the 1st day after injury. Sciatic nerve function was evaluated using the sciatic functional index. Degree of muscle atrophy was measured using the triceps surae muscle Cuadros index.Neuropathological changes were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Western blot analysis was used to detect expression of phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 （p-ERK1/2） in injured nerve. S100 immunoreactivity in injured nerve was detected by immunohistochemistry. In vivo experiments showed that 3 and 6 mg/kg AKBA significantly increased sciatic nerve index, Cuadros index of triceps muscle, p-ERK1/2 expression, and S100 immunoreactivity in injured sciatic nerve of sciatic nerve injury model rats. Furthermore,for in vitro experiments, Schwann cells were treated with AKBA at 0–20 μg/mL. Proliferation of Schwann cells was detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 colorimetry assay. The results showed that 2 μg/mL AKBA is the optimal therapeutic concentration. In addition, ERK phosphorylation levels increased following 2 μg/mL AKBA treatment. In the presence of the ERK1/2 inhibitor, PD98059 （2.5 μL/mL）, the AKBA-induced increase in p-ERK1/2 protein expression was partially abrogated. In conclusion, our study shows that AKBA promotes peripheral nerve regeneration with ERK protein phosphorylation playing a key role in this process.

Neuroprotective effects of kukoamine A on 6-OHDA-induced Parkinson’s model through apoptosis and iron accumulation inhibition

Objective: Parkinson’s disease(PD) is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra(SN). Our previous study demonstrated kukoamine A(KuA) to exhibit strong neuroprotective effects through antioxidative stress, and autophagy in MPTP/MPP+-induced PD models in vivo and in vitro. It is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of the anti-PD effects under various models.Methods: In the present study, total chemical synthesis was used to obtain KuA, which performed low content in Lycii Cortex. Then, 6-OHDA-induced PD model of PC12 cells was used to investigate the effects of KuA on PD.Results: Our results demonstrated that KuA ameliorated cell loss and mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP) loss, and inhibited Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increase that were induced by 6-OHDA. Iron accumulation in SN is thought to participate in neuronal death in PD, which subsequently resulted in oxidative stress and overexpression of a-synuclein caused by iron metabolism protein disorder. In our study, KuA could chelate cellular iron content and decrease iron influx. Moreover, KuA could upregulate the expression of ferroportin1 and Hephaestin, downregulate the expression of DMT1, TfR, and Ferritin to maintain cellular iron homeostasis avoiding neuronal death from cellular iron deposition. Moreover, KuA could decrease the expression of a-synuclein in cells. All the results indicated that KuA protected against neurotoxininduced PD due to the apoptosis inhibition and iron homeostasis maintaining.Conclusion: KuA treatment might represent a neuroprotective treatment for PD.

Heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G is down-regulated in the spinal cord of the Tg(SOD1*G93A)1Gur(TG)amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse model.However,most studies have only examined heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G expression in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis model and heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G effects in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis pathogenesis such as in apoptosis are unknown.In this study,we studied the potential mechanism of heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G in neuronal death in the spinal cord of TG and wild-type mice and examined the mechanism by which heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G induces apoptosis.Heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G in spinal cord was analyzed using immunohistochemistry and western blotting,and cell proliferation and proteins(TAR DNA binding protein 43,superoxide dismutase 1,and Bax)were detected by the Cell Counting Kit-8 and western blot analysis in heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G siRNA-transfected PC12 cells.We analyzed heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G distribution in spinal cord in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis model at various time points and the expressions of apoptosis and proliferation-related proteins.Heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G was mainly localized in neurons.Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mice were examined at three stages:preonset(60-70 days),onset(90-100 days)and progression(120-130 days).The number of heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G-positive cells was significantly higher in the anterior horn of the lumbar spinal cord segment of TG mice at the preonset stage than that of control group but lower than that of the control group at the onset stage.The number of heterogenous nuclear ribonucleoprotein G-positive cells in both central canal and surrounding gray matter of the whole spinal cord of TG mice at the onset stage was significantly lower than that in the control group,whereas that of the lumbar spinal cord segment of TG mice was significantly higher than that in the control gr

As a typical refractory material,the DD6 nickelbased single-crystal superalloy has important applications in the aviation industry.Ultrasonic-assisted drilling is an advanced machining method that significantly improves machining of refractory materials.The drilling thrust force influences the hole surface quality,burr height,and bit wear.Therefore,it is necessary to predict the thrust force during ultrasonic-assisted drilling.However,there are few reports on the modeling of the thrust force in the ultrasonicassisted drilling of micro-holes.A thrust force prediction model for ultrasonic-assisted micro-drilling is proposed in this study.Based on the basic cutting principle,the dynamic cutting speed,dynamic cutting thickness,and acoustic softening effect caused by ultrasonic vibrations are factored into this model.Through model calibration,the specific friction force and specific normal force coefficients were determined.The model was verified through ultrasonic-assisted drilling experiments conducted at different feed rates,spindle speeds,frequencies,and amplitudes.The maximum and minimum errors of the average thrust force were 10.5%and 2.3%,respectively.This model accurately predicts the thrust force based on the parameters used for ultrasonic-assisted micro-hole drilling and can assist in the analysis and modeling of DD6 superalloy processing.
