Data driven analysis reveals prognostic genes and immunological targets in human sepsis-associated acute kidney injury

BACKGROUND:The molecular mechanism of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury(SA-AKI)is unclear.We analyzed co-differentially expressed genes(co-DEGs)to elucidate the underlying mechanism and intervention targets of SA-AKI.METHODS:The microarray datasets GSE65682,GSE30718,and GSE174220 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO)database.We identified the co-DEGs and constructed a gene co-expression network to screen the hub genes.We analyzed immune correlations and disease correlations and performed functional annotation of the hub genes.We also performed single-cell and microenvironment analyses and investigated the enrichment pathways and the main transcription factors.Finally,we conducted a correlation analysis to evaluate the role of the hub genes.RESULTS:Interleukin 32(IL32)was identified as the hub gene in SA-AKI,and the main enriched signaling pathways were associated with hemopoiesis,cellular response to cytokine stimulus,inflammatory response,and regulation of kidney development.Additionally,IL32 was significantly associated with mortality in SA-AKI patients.Monocytes,macrophages,T cells,and NK cells were closely related to IL32 and were involved in the immune microenvironment in SA-AKI patients.IL32 expression increased significantly in the kidney of septic mouse.Toll-like receptor 2(TLR2)was significantly and negatively correlated with IL32.CONCLUSION:IL32 is the key gene involved in SA-AKI and is significantly associated with prognosis.TLR2 and relevant immune cells are closely related to key genes.

Investigation on the stall types in impellers with different blade numbers

Stall is a complex flow phenomenon and its existence usually shows significant differences in different impeller forms.In this paper,the flow field characteristics and mechanism of stall types in impellers with different blade numbers were studied through the combination of experiment and numerical simulation at stall inception stage.In the experiments,it was observed that the five-blade impeller entered the rotating stall stage from a relatively stable flow field within a small flow rate interval.For the six-blade impeller,the root cause that stall vortices appeared in channels alternately rather than each one evenly was also reasonably explained.The validated numerical simulation method was utilized to reveal the three-dimensional flow field in impeller channels.The results indicate the swirling vortex near the impeller shroud was periodically sucked in and escaped from region near the blade suction side,which was the fundamental driving force of rotating stall.The sudden change of flow field caused by the fusion of the separation vortex at the channel inlet and the vortex induced by the swirling vortex near shroud is the essential reason for the formation of alternating stall.What’s more,the stall inception flow field is clearly defined in impellers,which is of great significance for the further analysis of stall characteristics.Based on the distribution characteristics of vortex structure near impeller shroud with different blade numbers at different flow rate conditions,this paper deeply investigated the formation mechanism of different stall types in impellers.

From Furan to High Quality Bio-based Poly(ethylene furandicarboxylate)

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid（2,5-FDCA） has been regarded as the ideal bio-based alternative to terephthalic acid（TPA）. In recent years, great efforts have been made to synthesize 2,5-FDCA through the following methods：（1） oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural（HMF） in the presence of complex biocatalyst or metallic catalyst;（2） conversion of 2-furoic acid via the well-known Henkel Reaction. Herein, a new strategy for the synthesis of 2,5-FDCA from furan and acetic anhydride under mild condition is reported. The purity of the resulted 2,5-FDCA was above 99.9%. Acetic acid and iodoform generated in the reaction were recyclable and no other harmful by-products were detected. The thus-obtained 2,5-FDCA was applied for the preparation of poly（ethylene furandicarboxylate）（PEF） of high quality in terms of high molecular weight and good appearance.

Pituitary metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma:A case report

BACKGROUND Pituitary gland metastasis is an unusual event,and pituitary metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma is extremely rare and associated with poor prognosis.To date,approximately 15 cases have been reported.CASE SUMMARY Here,we present the case of a 64-year-old woman with pituitary metastasis derived from lung adenocarcinoma,which was difficult to distinguish from other sellar tumors.The patient presented to the neurosurgery clinic with blurred vision and intermittent headache.During hospitalization,brain computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pituitary macroadenoma.Chest CT revealed irregular nodules in the basal segment of the lower lobe of the left lung,which were likely lung cancer.Positron emission tomography-CT revealed a carbohydrate metabolism tumor in the lungs and sellar region,which was considered malignant.Postoperative pathological examination of the sellar tumor revealed lung adenocarcinoma.CONCLUSION Excision of pituitary metastases combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy should be a priority treatment for patients with pituitary metastasis.

Electrochemically activated nickel-cobalt double hydroxide for aqueous ammonium-zinc hybrid battery

Aqueous rechargeable ammonium-ion(NH^(4+))batteries(AAIBs)with ammonium ions as charge carriers possess many advantages,yet the relatively low discharge capacities(e.g.,<200 mAh·g^(−1))of the reported NH_(4)^(+)host materials hinder the development of AAIBs.Herein,we study the NH_(4)^(+)storage properties of an electrochemically activated NiCo double hydroxide(A-NiCo-DH)in neutral ammonium acetate electrolyte for the first time.The activation process extracts the interlayer anions(NO3from the host material,providing additional cation accommodation sites for charge storage.The introduced H vacancies in A-−)NiCo-DH could activate the O sites,leading to the enhanced cation adsorption capability for the electrode.Therefore,A-NiCo-DH exhibits a high discharge capacity of 280.6 mAh·g^(−1)at 0.72 A·g^(−1)with good rate capability.Spectroscopy studies suggest A-NiCo-DH experiences a NH4+/H+coinsertion mechanism.A NH4+-Zn hybrid cell is assembled using A-NiCo-DH as the cathode and Zn foil as the anode,respectively.The device delivers an energy density of 306 Wh·kg^(−1)at the power density of 745.8 W·kg^(−1)(based on the active mass of A-NiCo-DH).This work provides a new NH_(4)^(+)storage material and would push forward the development of aqueous NH4+-based batteries.

Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)have become useful tools to extend human abilities and capacities.Currently UAVs are being used for the surveillance of environmental factors related to the transmission of infectious diseases.They have also been used for delivering therapeutic drugs and life-saving supplies to patients or isolated persons in extreme conditions.There have been very few applications of UAVs for disease surveillance,control and prevention to date.However,we foresee many uses for these machines in the fight against zoonotic disease.The control of zoonoses has been a big challenge as these diseases are naturally maintained in animal populations.Among 868 reported zoonoses,echinococcosis(hydatid disease)is one of the most severe public health problems and listed as one of 17 neglected tropical diseases targeted for control by the World Health Organization.Infected dogs(domestic or stray)play the most important role as definitive hosts in maintaining the transmission of echinococcosis.However,the actual contribution of wild canines to transmission has received little attention as yet,but should certainly not be ignored.This paper summarizes the history of development and application of UAVs,with an emphasis on their potential use for zoonosis control.As an example,we outline a pilot trial of echinococcosis control in the qinghai-Tibet Plateau region,in which UAVs were used to deliver baits with praziquantel for wildlife deworming.The data suggested that this is a cost-effective and efficient approach to the control of zoonotic diseases transmitted among wild animal populations.

Cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness globally.Over the years,researchers have achieved significant progress in developing state-of-the-art machine learning techniques for automatic cataract classification and grading,aiming to prevent cataracts early and improve clinicians′diagnosis efficiency.This survey provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances in machine learning techniques for cataract classification/grading based on ophthalmic images.We summarize existing literature from two research directions:conventional machine learning methods and deep learning methods.This survey also provides insights into existing works of both merits and limitations.In addition,we discuss several challenges of automatic cataract classification/grading based on machine learning techniques and present possible solutions to these challenges for future research.

Synthesis and Properties Investigation of Thiophene-aromatic Polyesters: Potential Alternatives for the 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid-based Ones

In order to explore new substitutes for 2,5 furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA)or poly(ethylene 2,5 furandicarboxylate)(PEF)and try to develop more ideal bio based polyesters,several thiophene aromatic polyesters(PETH,PPTH,PBTH,and PHTH)were synthesized from dimethyl thiophene 2,5-dicarboxylate(DMTD)and different diols,including ethylene glycol,1,3-propanediol,1,4-butanediol,and 1,6-hexanediol.The chemical structures of obtained polyesters were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(H-NMR and 1'C-NMR).Determined by GPC measurement,their average molecular weight(M.)varied from 5.22 x 10*g/mol to 7.94 x 10*g/mol with the molar-mass dispersity of 1.50-2.00.Based on the DSC and TGA results,the synthesized polyesters PETH,PPTH,and PBTH displayed comparable or even better thermal properties when compared with their FDCA-based analogues.From PETH to PHTH,their Tg varied from 64.6°Cto-1°C while Tsm ranged from 409 C to 380°C in nitrogen atmosphere,PETH showed elongation at break as high as 378%,tensile strength of 67 MPa,and tensile modulus of 1800 MPa.Meanwhile,the CO2 and O2 barrier of PETH was 12.0 and 6.6 folds higher than those of PET,respectively,and similar to those of PEF.Considering the overall properties,the synthesized thiophene aromatic polyesters,especially PETH,showed great potential to be used as an excellent bio based packaging material in the future.

Rapid diagnostic method for transplutonium isotope production in high flux reactors

Transplutonium isotopes are scarce and need to be produced by irradiation in high flux reactors.However,their production is inefficient,and optimization studies are necessary.This study analyzes the physical nature of transplutonium isotope produc-tion using ^(252)Cf,^(244)Cm,^(242)Cm,and ^(238)Pu as examples.Traditional methods based on the Monte Carlo burnup calculation have the limitations of many calculations and cannot analyze the individual energy intervals in detail;thus,they cannot sup-port the refined evaluation,screening,and optimization of the irradiation schemes.After understanding the physical nature and simplifying the complexity of the production process,we propose a rapid diagnostic method for evaluating radiation schemes based on the concepts“single energy interval value(SEIV)”and“energy spectrum total value(ESTV)”.The rapid diagnostic method not only avoids tedious burnup calculations,but also provides a direction for optimization.The optimal irradiation schemes for producing ^(252)Cf,^(244)Cm,^(242)Cm,and ^(238)Pu are determined based on a rapid diagnostic method.Optimal irradiation schemes can significantly improve production efficiency.Compared with the initial scheme,the optimal scheme improved the production efficiency of ^(238)Pu by 7.41 times;^(242)Cm,11.98 times;^(244)Cm,65.20 times;and ^(252)Cf,15.08 times.Thus,a refined analysis of transplutonium isotope production is conducted and provides a theoretical basis for improving production efficiency.

The Influencing Factors of Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Prognostic Marker for Sepsis:Analysis from a Large Database

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an important predictive prognostic tool. However, its accuracy for predicting sepsis remains debatable. This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing the ability of NLR to predict sepsis. Adult patients with sepsis or septic shock from the eICU database were enrolled in this study. Results showed that there was a significant difference in NLR between the survival and nonsurvival groups (median [lower quartile–upper quartile], 15.27 [7.92–26.28] vs. 17.97 [8.94–31.85], P = 0.008). Area under the curve (AUC) of NLR on the sixth day was the highest. AUC of NLR was significantly higher in the Simplified Acute Physiological Score (SAPS) 3 ≤52 group than that in the SAPS3 > 52 group (0.78 ± 0.05 vs. 0.69 ± 0.03, P = 0.007). AUC of NLR in the nonshock group was significantly higher than that in the shock group (0.72 ± 0.04 vs. 0.65 ± 0.05, P < 0.01). The ability of NLR as a prognosis predictor of sepsis was influenced by admission time, SAPS3, and shock.
