Evolution of Cenozoic sedimentary architecture in Central and Southern South China Sea basins

The Central and Southern South China Sea(CSSCS) has a complex tectonic dynamic background and abundant oil and gas resources, which has always been a hot topic of academic and industrial ***, systematic analyses are still lacking regarding its sediment filling structure and evolution, mostly due to limited borehole penetration and poor quality of seismic reflection data for deeply buried sequences. No consensus has been reached yet on the sedimentary infilling processes, which impeded the reconstruction of the palaeogeography of Southeast Asia and the oil-and-gas exploration undertakings. Here, we illustrate the Cenozoic sedimentary evolution of the CSSCS region by synthesizing relevant data from previous literature and our own observations and displaying the evolution of depositional systems in sequential reconstructions. Besides, the controlling factors of preferred sedimentary scenarios in the CSSCS incorporate the latest interpretations of the spreading of South China Sea(SCS) as well as the demise of the hypothetical Proto-South China Sea(PSCS). The results show that there are three types of sedimentary basins in the CSSCS(foreland,strike-slip, and rift basins) with different sedimentary filling structures. The foreland basins formed a depositional pattern of ‘transition from deep water to shallow water environments', dominated by deep-water depositional systems which were formed before the Early Oligocene with submarine fans developed. Later,the foreland basins were gradually dominated by shallow-water depositional systems with deltas and shallow marine facies. The strike-slip basins showed the depositional architecture of ‘transition from lake to marine environments', i.e. the basins were dominated by lacustrine deposits during the Eocene and evolved into the marine depositional environment since Oligocene with delta developed in the western part of the basin. The injection of a polymer chain into a small circular cavity under tangential self-propelled force is studied by using Langevin dynamics *** indicate that the injection dynamics of the active polymer shows strong correlation with the polymer conformation inside the cavity depending on the polymer rigidity(k_(b)).The injection timeτvaries nonmonotonously with increasing k_(b),and reaches its minimum at k_(b)^(*).When k_(b) is small(k_(b)≪k_(b)^(*)),the polymer is nearly random coil in the cavity,and spends a long time at the final stage of the injection process due to the large repulsion between monomers inside the *** k_(b) is moderate(k_(b)∼k_(b)^(*)),the part of polymer inside the cavity forms spiral configuration under the tangential active force,and the whole polymer moves synchronously with a constant velocity during the injection process,leading to a small injection *** k_(b) is large(k_(b)≫k_(b)^(*)),the polymer is nearly straight at the initial stage of the injection process,and takes a long time to bend itself,leading to a large injection time.

Fast neutron absorption spectroscopy is widely used in the study of nuclear structure and element analysis. However,due to the traditional neutron source pulse duration being of the order of nanoseconds, it is difficult to obtain a high-resolution absorption spectrum. Thus, we present a method of ultrahigh energy-resolution absorption spectroscopy via a high repetition rate, picosecond duration pulsed neutron source driven by a terawatt laser. The technology of single neutron count is used, which results in easily distinguishing the width of approximately 20 keV at 2 MeV and an asymmetric shape of the neutron absorption peak. The absorption spectroscopy based on a laser neutron source has one order of magnitude higher energy-resolution power than the state-of-the-art traditional neutron sources, which could be of benefit for precisely measuring nuclear structure data.

Saline wastewater is regarded as a challenge for wastewater treatment plants because high-salinity conditions negatively affect on traditional biological *** granular sludge(AGS)has gained attention as a promising technology for saline wastewater treatment because of its compact structure and the ability to withstand toxic ***,this study investigated the saltresistance performance,sludge properties and microbial community of AGS under low-salinity and high-salinity conditions,with the saline concentrations ranging from 0 to 50 g/*** results showed that AGS could withstand long-term saline stresses,and the maximum salinity reached 50 g/L within 113 *** salinities of 10,30,and 50 g/L,the chemical oxygen demand(COD)removal efficiencies were 90.3%,88.0%and 78.0%,*** also its maintained strength and aggregation at salinities of 10 and 30 g/*** of extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)by non-halophilic bacteria that enhanced sludge *** compact structure that ensured the microorganisms bioactivity helped to remove organic matters under salinities of 10 and 30 g/*** a salinity of 50 g/L,moderately halophilic bacteria,including Salinicola,Thioclava,Idiomarina and Albirhodobacter,prevailed in the *** dominant microbial communities shifted to moderately halophilic bacteria,which could maintain aerobic granular stabilization and remove organic matters under 50 g/L *** results in this study provide a further explanation for the long-term operation of AGS for treating saline wastewater at different *** is hoped that this work could bring some clues for the mystery of salt-resistance mechanisms.

Ti-6Al-4V is a benchmark Ti alloy. Laser wire additive manufacturing(LWAM) offers advanced manufacturing capability to the alloy for applications possibly including exploration of outer space. As a typical multiple-variable process, LWAM is complex, which, however, can be analyzed, predicated or even optimized by artificial intelligence(AI) methods such as machine learning(ML). In this study, printing parameters of the Ti-6Al-4V is firstly optimized using single-track-single-layer experiments, and then single-track-multiple-layer samples are printed, whose properties in terms of hardness and compressive strength are analyzed subsequently by both experiments and ML. The two ML approaches, artificial neural network(ANN) and support vector machine(SVM), are employed to predict the experimental results, whose coefficients of determination R2 show good values. Further optimized properties are realized by adopting genetic algorithm(GA) and simulated annealing(SA) approaches, which contribute to high mechanical properties achieved, for instance, an engineering compressive strength of about 1694 MPa. The results here indicate that important mechanical properties of the LWAM-prepared Ti alloys can be well predicted and enhanced using suitable ML approaches.
