Review of chiplet-based design: system architecture and interconnection

Chiplet-based design, which breaks a system into multiple smaller dice(or “chiplets”) and reassembles them into a new system chip through advanced packaging, has received extensive attention in the post Moore's law era due to its advantages in terms of cost, performance, and agility. However, significant challenges arise in this implementation approach, including the mapping of functional components onto chiplets, co-optimization of package and architecture, handling the increased latency of communication across functions in different dies, the uncertainty problems of fragment communication subsystems, such as maintaining deadlock-free when independently designed chiplets are combined. Despite various design approaches that attempt to address these challenges, surveying these approaches one-after-another is not the most helpful way to offer a comparative viewpoint. Accordingly, in this paper, we present a more comprehensive and systematic strategy to survey the various approaches. First, we divide them into chiplet-based system architecture design and interconnection design, and further classify them based on different architectures and building blocks of interconnection. Then, we analyze and cross-compare each classification separately, and in addition, we present a topical discussion on the evolution of memory architectures, design automation, and other relevant topics in chiplet-based designs. Finally, some discussions on important topics are presented,emphasizing future needs and challenges in this rapidly evolving field.

Geometric error is the main factor affecting the machining accuracy of hybrid machine *** calibration is an effective way to improve the geometric accuracy of hybrid machine *** necessity to measure both position and orientation at each pose,as well as the instability of identification in case of incomplete measurements,severely affects the application of traditional calibration *** this study,a kinematic calibration method with high measurement efficiency and robust identification is proposed to improve the kinematic accuracy of a five-axis hybrid machine ***,the configuration is introduced,and an error model is ***,by investigating the mechanism error characteristics,a measurement scheme that only requires tool centre point position error measurement and one alignment operation is ***,by analysing the effects of unmeasured degrees of freedom(DOFs)on other DOFs,an improved nonlinear least squares method based on virtual measurement values is proposed to achieve stable parameter identification in case of incomplete measurement,without introducing additional ***,the proposed calibration method is verified through simulations and *** proposed method can efficiently accomplish the kinematic calibration of the hybrid machine *** accuracy of the hybrid machine tool is significantly improved after calibration,satisfying actual aerospace machining requirements.

For rough machining of a complex narrow cavity,e.g.,a complex blisk channel on an aero-engine,the typically used cutting tools are the slender cylindrical cutter and conical ***,as neither of the two is particularly suited for rough machining,wherein the main purpose is to remove a large volume as quickly as possible,the machining efficiency is low,especially when the part materials are of hard-to-cut types(e.g.,Titanium-alloy)for which it often takes days to rough machine a ***,disc machining provides a new and efficient roughing solution,since a disc cutter with a large radius enables a much larger cutting speed and thus a larger material removal ***,due to the large radius of the disc cutter,its potential collision with narrow and twisted channels becomes a serious *** this paper,we propose a novel twophase approach for efficiently machining a complex narrow cavity workpiece using a disc-shaped cutter,i.e.,3+2-axis disc-slotting of the channel by multiple layers(rough machining)+five-axis disc-milling of the freeform channel side surfaces(semi-finish machining).Both simulation and physical cutting experiments are conducted to assess the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed *** experimental results show that,with respect to a same cusp-height threshold on the channel side surfaces,the total machining time of the tested part by the proposed method is about only 36%of that by the conventional approach of plunging-milling(for roughing)plus milling by a slender cylindrical cutter(for semi-finishing).

SWG: an architecture for sparse weight gradient computation

On-device training for deep neural networks(DNN) has become a trend due to various user preferences and scenarios. The DNN training process consists of three phases, feedforward(FF), backpropagation(BP), and weight gradient(WG) update. WG takes about one-third of the computation in the whole training process. Current training accelerators usually ignore the special computation property of WG and process it in a way similar to FF/BP. Besides, the extensive data sparsity existing in WG, which brings opportunities to save computation, is not well explored. Nevertheless, exploiting the optimization opportunities would meet three underutilization problems, which are caused by(1) the mismatch between WG data dimensions and hardware parallelism,(2) the full sparsity, i.e., the sparsity of feature map(Fmap),error map(Emap), and gradient, and(3) the workload imbalance resulting from irregular sparsity. In this paper, we propose a specific architecture for sparse weight gradient(SWG) computation. The architecture is designed based on hierarchical unrolling and sparsity-aware(HUSA) dataflow to exploit the optimization opportunities of the special computation property and full data sparsity. In HUSA dataflow, the data dimensions are unrolled hierarchically on the hardware architecture. A valid-data trace(VDT) mechanism is embedded in the dataflow to avoid the underutilization caused by the two-sided input sparsity. The gradient is unrolled in PE to alleviate the underutilization induced by output sparsity while maintaining the data reuse opportunities. Besides, we design an intra-and inter-column balancer(IIBLC) to dynamically tackle the workload imbalance problem resulting from the irregular sparsity. Experimental results show that with HUSA dataflow exploiting the full sparsity, SWG achieves a speedup of 12.23× over state-of-the-art gradient computation architecture, Train Ware. With advancements in mobile communication technologies, there have been multiple user device(UD) connections to cellular networks. Because of changes in the spatial distribution of UDs and application requirements, the traditional offloading mechanism based on the nearest distance will result in heavy loads for some base stations(BSs). Because there is a high-order relationship between the energy consumption of the BS processing tasks and the number of computing tasks, the traditional offloading mechanism will result in high energy consumption, and UD’s offloading decision must be dynamically adjusted. The offloading decision of UDs is optimized based on detailed information about various parameters associated with a network from the standpoint of distribution. This information includes details regarding the spatial distribution of UDs,application requirements, and the offloading period of computing tasks. Based on optimal transport theory,an energy consumption optimization algorithm is suggested to lower the total amount of energy consumed by the offloading process of UDs’ computing tasks by reasonably planning the offloading BSs of the UDs in the networks. The simulation results show that the proposed offloading mechanism based on energy consumption optimization reduces the total energy consumption of the offloading process by 28.09% when compared to the traditional offloading mechanism, and the traffic managed by each BS is balanced.

Precipitation plays a crucial role in the water cycle of Northwest *** accurate precipitation data is crucial for regional water resource management,hydrological forecasting,flood control and drought ***,the applicability of multi-source precipitation products for long time series in Northwest China has not been thoroughly *** this study,precipitation data from 183 meteorological stations in Northwest China from 1979 to 2020 were selected to assess the regional applicability of four precipitation products(the fifth generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)atmospheric reanalysis of the global climate(ERA5),Global Precipitation Climatology Centre(GPCC),Climatic Research Unit gridded Time Series Version 4.07(CRU TS v4.07,hereafter CRU),and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM))based on the following statistical indicators:correlation coefficient,root mean square error(RMSE),relative bias(RB),mean absolute error(MAE),probability of detection(POD),false alarm ratio(FAR),and equitable threat score(ETS).The results showed that precipitation in Northwest China was generally high in the east and low in the west,and exhibited an increasing trend from 1979 to *** with the station observations,ERA5 showed a larger spatial distribution difference than the other *** overall overestimation of multi-year average precipitation was approximately 200.00 mm and the degree of overestimation increased with increasing precipitation *** multi-year average precipitation of GPCC and CRU was relatively close to that of station *** trend of annual precipitation of TRMM was overestimated in high-altitude regions and the eastern part of Lanzhou with more *** the monthly scale,GPCC performed well but underestimated precipitation in the Tarim Basin(RB=-4.11%),while ERA5 and TRMM exhibited poor accuracy in high-altitude ***5 had a large bias(RB≥120.00%)in winter months

There is a perpetual pursuit for free-form glasses and ceramics featuring outstanding mechanical properties as well as chemical and thermal *** is a promising idea to shape inorganic materials in three-dimensional(3D)forms to reduce their weight while maintaining high mechanical properties.A popular strategy for the preparation of 3D inorganic materials is to mold the organic–inorganic hybrid photoresists into 3D micro-and nano-structures and remove the organic components by subsequent ***,due to the discrete arrangement of inorganic components in the organic-inorganic hybrid photoresists,it remains a huge challenge to attain isotropic shrinkage during ***,we demonstrate the isotropic sintering shrinkage by forming the consecutive–Si–O–Si–O–Zr–O–inorganic backbone in photoresists and fabricating 3D glass–ceramic nanolattices with enhanced mechanical *** femtosecond(fs)laser is used in two-photon polymerization(TPP)to fabricate 3D green body *** subsequent sintering at 1000℃,high-quality 3D glass–ceramic microstructures can be obtained with perfectly intact and smooth ***-suit compression experiments and finite-element simulations reveal that octahedral-truss(oct-truss)lattices possess remarkable adeptness in bearing stress concentration and maintain the structural integrity to resist rod bending,indicating that this structure is a candidate for preparing lightweight and high stiffness glass–ceramic nanolattices.3D printing of such glasses and ceramics has significant implications in a number of industrial applications,including metamaterials,microelectromechanical systems,photonic crystals,and damage-tolerant lightweight materials.
