Modulation of Spike Count Correlations Between Macaque Primary Visual Cortex Neurons by Difficulty of Attentional Task

Studies have shown that spatial attention remarkably affects the trial-to-trial response variability shared between neurons.Difficulty in the attentional task adjusts how much concentration we maintain on what is currently important and what is filtered as irrelevant sensory information.However,how task difficulty mediates the interactions between neurons with separated receptive fields(RFs)that are attended to or attended away is still not clear.We examined spike count correlations between single-unit activities recorded simultaneously in the primary visual cortex(V1)while monkeys performed a spatial attention task with two levels of difficulty.Moreover,the RFs of the two neurons recorded were non-overlapping to allow us to study fluctuations in the correlated responses between competing visual inputs when the focus of attention was allocated to the RF of one neuron.While increasing difficulty in the spatial attention task,spike count correlations were either decreased to become negative between neuronal pairs,implying competition among them,with one neuron(or none)exhibiting attentional enhancement of firing rate,or increased to become positive,suggesting inter-neuronal cooperation,with one of the pair showing attentional suppression of spiking responses.Besides,the modulation of spike count correlations by task difficulty was independent of the attended locations.These findings provide evidence that task difficulty affects the functional interactions between different neuronal pools in V1 when selective attention resolves the spatial competition.

Adsorption Mechanism and Kinetic Characterization of Bituminous Coal under High Temperatures and Pressures in the linxing-Shenfu Area

The majority of coalbed methane(CBM) in coal reservoirs is in adsorption states in coal matrix pores. To reveal the adsorption behavior of bituminous coal under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and to discuss the microscopic control mechanism affecting the adsorption characteristics, isothermal adsorption experiments under hightemperature and high-pressure conditions, low-temperature liquid nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments and CO2 adsorption experiments were performed on coal samples. Results show that the adsorption capacity of coal is comprehensively controlled by the maximum vitrinite reflectance(Ro, max), as well as temperature and pressure conditions. As the vitrinite reflectance increases, the adsorption capacity of coal increases. At low pressures, the pressure has a significant effect on the positive effect of adsorption, but the effect of temperature is relatively weak. As the pressure increases, the effect of temperature on the negative effect of adsorption gradually becomes apparent, and the influence of pressure gradually decreases. Considering pore volumes of pores with diameters of 1.7-100 nm, the peak volume of pores with diameters 10-100 nm is higher than that from pores with diameters 1.7-10 nm, especially for pores with diameters of 40-60 nm, indicating that pores with diameters of 10-100 nm are the main contributors to the pore volume. The pore specific surface area shows multiple peaks, and the peak value appears for pore diameters of 2-3 nm, indicating that this pore diameter is the main contributor to the specific surface area. For pore diameters of 0.489-1.083 nm, the pore size distribution is bimodal, with peak values at 0.56-0.62 nm and 0.82-0.88 nm. The adsorption capability of the coal reservoir depends on the development degree of the supermicroporous specific surface area, because the supermicroporous pores are the main contributors to the specific pore area. A Novel Intelligent System for Dynamic Observation of Cotton Verticillium Wilt

Verticillium wilt is one of the most critical cotton diseases,which is widely distributed in cotton-producing countries.However,the conventional method of verticillium wilt investigation is still manual,which has the disadvantages of subjectivity and low efficiency.In this research,an intelligent vision-based system was proposed to dynamically observe cotton verticillium wilt with high accuracy and high throughput.Firstly,a 3-coordinate motion platform was designed with the movement range 6,100 mm×950 mm×500 mm,and a specific control unit was adopted to achieve accurate movement and automatic imaging.Secondly,the verticillium wilt recognition was established based on 6 deep learning models,in which the VarifocalNet(VFNet)model had the best performance with a mean average precision(mAP)of 0.932.Meanwhile,deformable convolution,deformable region of interest pooling,and soft non-maximum suppression optimization methods were adopted to improve VFNet,and the mAP of the VFNet-Improved model improved by 1.8%.The precision–recall curves showed that VFNet-Improved was superior to VFNet for each category and had a better improvement effect on the ill leaf category than fine leaf.The regression results showed that the system measurement based on VFNet-Improved achieved high consistency with manual measurements.Finally,the user software was designed based on VFNet-Improved,and the dynamic observation results proved that this system was able to accurately investigate cotton verticillium wilt and quantify the prevalence rate of different resistant varieties.In conclusion,this study has demonstrated a novel intelligent system for the dynamic observation of cotton verticillium wilt on the seedbed,which provides a feasible and effective tool for cotton breeding and disease resistance research.

Application of osteoinductive calcium phosphate ceramics in giant cell tumor of the sacrum:report of six cases

This study aimed at evaluating the possibility and effectiveness of osteoinductive bioceramics to fill the tumor cavity following the curettage of sacral giant cell tumor(GCT).Six patients(four females and two males,25–45 years old)underwent nervesparing surgery,in which the tumor was treated by denosumab,preoperative arterial embolization and extensive curettage.The remaining cavity was filled with commercial osteoinductive calcium phosphate(CaP)bioceramics,whose excellent osteoinductivity was confirmed by intramuscular implantation in beagle canine.All patients were followed by computed tomography(CT)scans postoperatively.According to the modified Neer criterion,five cases obtained Type I healing status,and one case had Type II.At the latest follow-up,no graft-related complications and local recurrence were found.The CT scan indicated a median time of healing initiation of 3months postoperatively,and the median time for relatively complete healing was 12months.The excellent bone regenerative ability of the ceramics was also confirmed by increased CT attenuation value,blurred boundary and cortical rim rebuilding.In conclusion,osteoinductive CaP bioceramics could be an ideal biomaterial to treat the large remaining cavity following extensive curettage of sacral GCT.However,further investigation with more cases and longer follow-up was required to confirm the final clinical effect.

A nonmulberry silk fibroin-based robust mandruka for rapid hemostasis treatment

Uncontrolled hemorrhage resulting from traumas causes severe health risks.There is an urgent need for expeditious hemostatic materials to treat bleeding incidents.Here,we developed a natural protein-based hemostatic sponge extracted from nonmulberry cocoons that exhibited rapid coagulation and effective absorption.We first built a degumming and dissolution system suitable for the Dictyoploca japonica cocoons to obtain regenerated silk fibroin(DSF).The DSF was then combined with carboxymethyl chitosan(CMCS)by glutaraldehyde(GA)crosslinking to ensure the structural stability of sponges.The resulting DSF–CMCS–GA exhibited remarkable hemostatic properties,displaying the highest absorption rate.It also demonstrated comparable efficacy to commercial hemostatic sponges.The blood-clotting index and hemolysis test showed that the prepared sponge possessed hemostatic activity and good hemocompatibility.Compared with mulberry silk fibroin hemostatic sponges(SF–CMCS–GA),DSF–CMCS–GA showed slightly better effects,making them a potential alternative to mulberry silk.In conclusion,our study introduces the use of Dictyoploca japonica silk fibroin for hemostasis,highlighting the exploitation of wild silkworm resources and providing an excellent silk fibroin-based hemostatic sealant for acute accident wounds and biomedical applications involving massive hemorrhage.

Nitrogen release characteristics of polyethylene-coated controlled-release fertilizers and their dependence on membrane pore structure

In this study, controlled-release fertilizers （CRFs） with five different nitrogen release periods were pre- pared by coating large urea particles with polyethylene （PE） membranes under various experimental conditions. The preliminary and differential solubility rates, release periods, and membrane pore sizes of the obtained CRFs were measured using water immersion, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury porosimetry. For all CRF samples, the median pore diameters of the membranes were equal to 4.5-5.3 nm and pores with sizes smaller than 10 nm accounted for 86-96% of the total pore surface area. The obtained pore diameter distributions differed for the five studied types of CRF, having release periods of 1,2, 4, 6, and 8 months. Thus, for the CRFs with a 1-month release period, the maximum pore diameter reached a magnitude of 4000 nm, while this value did not exceed 30 nm for the CRFs with a release period of 8 months. Hence, we have established a relationship between the release period of CRFs and their effective maximum pore sizes.

Dear Editor,African swine fever virus(ASFV),the sole member of the family Asfarviridae,is the causative agent of African swine fever(ASF),a viral disease that leads to high mortality in domestic pigs.Since firstly identified in Kenya in the 1920s,ASFV has been prevalent in Africa,Europe,and Russian Federation(Sanchez et al.,2019).Recently,ASFV was introduced to Asian countries including China,Mongolia,Vietnam,Cambodia,Laos and South Korea,which lead to huge economic losses to local pig industries(li and Tian,2018;Gaudreault and Richt,2019).The first case of ASFV in China was reported in August 2018(Zhou et al.,2018).

Whisker of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics: Osteoimmunomodulatory behaviors

Immune systems play a critical role in the regulation of bone formation and homeostasis,which arouses a growing interest in the development of biomaterials that can modulate both immune response and osteogenesis.In this study,biphasic calcium phosphate(BCP)ceramics were modified with different whiskered surface,and their effects on macrophage polarization and functional status were investigated.The results showed that compared to BCP-W ceramics with long and solid whiskers,BCPHW ceramics with short and hollow whiskers surface were conducive to protein adsorption and macrophage elongation.Furthermore,BCP-HW ceramics down-regulated the expression of M1 macrophage markers(Il1β,Tnfα,and iNos),promoted the expression of M2 macrophage markers(Il10 and Arg)and growth factors(Tgfβ1 and Bmp2),which might be attributed to the differential integrin expression regulated by different whisker structures.The conditioned medium derived from the supernatant of macrophage/whiskered ceramic co-culture was further used to culture MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts to evaluate the effects of whiskered ceramic-mediated macrophage secretion on osteogenesis in vitro.Compared with BCP-W ones,the secretion pattern induced by BCP-HW ceramics could promote the expression of bone markers in pre-osteoblasts,which might due to the activation of intracellular signaling cascades like BMP/Smad and TGF-β/Smad signaling pathways.A murine intramuscular implantation model suggested that after implantation for 1,2,and 3 weeks,BCP-HW ceramics drove the switch of macrophages to ARG+wound-healing M2 phenotype,while BCP-W ceramics increased the proportion of iNOS+M1 inflammatory macrophages.At 2 months,only BCP-HW could induce ectopic bone formation.Taken together,these results indicated that BCP ceramics with hollow whiskers were capable of creating a proper inflammatory microenvironment to induce bone formation.These whiskered BCP ceramics with good osteo-immunomodulatory capacity hold promise in serving as bone grafts to achieve desired bone repair and regenerat

PMCMC for Term Structure of Interest Rates under Markov Regime Switching and Jumps

A parameter estimation method,called PMCMC in this paper,is proposed to estimate a continuous-time model of the term structure of interests under Markov regime switching and jumps.There is a closed form solution to term structure of interest rates under Markov regime.However,the model is extended to be a CKLS model with non-closed form solutions which is a typical nonlinear and non-Gaussian state-space model(SSM)in the case of adding jumps.Although the difficulty of parameter estimation greatly prevents from researching models,we prove that the nonlinear and non-Gaussian state-space model has better performances in studying volatility.The method proposed in this paper will be implemented in simulation and empirical study for SHIBOR.Empirical results illustrate that the PMCMC algorithm has powerful advantages in tackling the models.
