The Observed Near-Surface Energy Exchange Processes over Arctic Glacier in Summer

Under Arctic warming, near-surface energy transfers have significantly changed, but few studies have focused on energy exchange over Arctic glacier due to limitations in available observations. In this study, the atmospheric energy exchange processes over the Arctic glacier surface were analyzed by using observational data obtained in summer 2019 in comparison with those over the Arctic tundra surface. The energy budget over the glacier greatly differed from that over the tundra, characterized by less net shortwave radiation and downward sensible heat flux,due to the high albedo and icy surface. Most of the incoming solar radiation was injected into the glacier in summer,leading to snow ice melting. During the observation period, strong daily variations in near-surface heat transfer occurred over the Arctic glacier, with the maximum downward and upward heat fluxes occurring on 2 and 6 July 2019,respectively. Further analyses suggested that the maximum downward heat flux is mainly caused by the strong local thermal contrast above the glacier surface, while the maximum upward heat transfer cannot be explained by the classical turbulent heat transfer theory, possibly caused by countergradient heat transfer. Our results indicated that the near-surface energy exchange processes over Arctic glacier may be strongly related to local forcings, but a more indepth investigation will be needed in the future when more observational data become available.

Molecular solid solution of lanthanide-titanium-oxo clusters with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Molecular solid solutions of metal clusters containing different metal centers with well-defined structures can accurately regulate the HOMO-LUMO gap,but are rarely available.Herein,a series of colorless lanthanide-titanium-oxo clusters Ln_(2)Ti_4(μ_(2)-O)_(2)(μ_(3)-O)_4(Piv)_(10)(THF)_(2)(Ln_(2)Ti_4,Ln = Eu,Gd,Tb,and Ce,HPiv = pivalic acid) were synthesized by the reaction of pivalic acid with Ln(Ac)_(3) and titanium isopropoxide.The light yellow crystal of cluster solid solutions Eu_(2)Ti_(4-x)Cd_(x),containing a mixture of Eu_(2)Ti_4 and Eu_(2)Ti_(3)Cd,was obtained by in situ doping Cd^(2+) and S^(2–).Eu_(2)Ti_(3.92)Cd_(0.08) displays efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity without a co-catalyst,which is up to 2.6 times that of Eu_(2)Ti_4.Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and spin-polarized density functional calculations showed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of Eu_(2)Ti_(4-x)Cd_(x) can be attributed to the narrower HOMO-LUMO gap and lower LUMO position than that of Eu_(2)Ti_4.This studyprovides an in situ doping method to realize the simple preparation of cluster solid solution.

Acupoint catgut-embedding therapy ameliorates DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis in BALB/c mice by regulating Th2 type immune response and reducing infiltration of CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)cells

Background:This study aimed to assess how acupoint catgut-embedding therapy influences Th2-type immune response and the infiltration of CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)cells in DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis in BALB/c mice.It also conducted an initial examination of the underlying molecular mechanisms.Methods:Seventy-two mice were randomly divided into four groups:normal control,DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis model(AD),AD with acupoint catgut-embedding treatment(ADA),and AD with sham-acupoint catgut-embedding treatment.After DNCB challenge to induce AD,the ADA group received acupoint catgut-embedding therapy treatment at Zusanli(ST 36)and Quchi(LI 11)acupoints every other week from day 8.Mice in the AD with sham-acupoint catgut-embedding treatment group underwent the same procedure as the ADA group but without catgut implantation.Severity was assessed using SCORAD on treatment days 1,10,and 20.On day 18,nine mice per group were euthanized,and the remaining on day 28.Histopathological changes were observed using hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemistry staining.TNF-α,IL-4,IL-6,and IL-13 levels were analyzed by ELISA,and GATA3 and STAT6 protein levels by western blot.Results:After 20 days of acupoint catgut-embedding therapy treatment,mice showed reduced dermatitis scores compared to DNCB-induced AD-like mice.Significant decreases occurred in serum IL-4,IL-6,IL-13,and TNF-αlevels.Skin analysis revealed marked reductions in CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)cell infiltration,as well as GATA3 and STAT6 protein levels.Conclusion:Acupoint catgut-embedding therapy may effectively alleviate atopic dermatitis by suppressing Th2 immune responses via the STAT6-GATA3 pathway and reducing CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)T cell infiltration in skin lesions.

Study on the preservation effects of the amputated forelimb by machine perfusion at physiological temperature

Purpose:Ischemia and hypoxia are the main factors limiting limb replantation and transplantation.Static cold storage(SCS),a common preservation method for tissues and organs,can only prolong limb ischemia time to 4-6 h.The normothermic machine perfusion(NMP)is a promising method for the preservation of tissues and organs,which can extend the preservation time in vitro by providing continuous oxygen and nutrients.This study aimed to evaluate the difference in the efficacy of the 2 limb preservation methods.Methods:The 6 forelimbs from beagle dogs were divided into 2 groups.In the SCS group(n=3),the limbs were preserved in a sterile refrigerator at 4°C for 24 h,and in the NMP group(n=3),the perfusate prepared with autologous blood was used for the oxygenated machine perfusion at physiological temperature for 24 h,and the solution was changed every 6 h.The effects of limb storage were evaluated by weight gain,perfusate biochemical analysis,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay,and histological analysis.All statistical analyses and graphs were performed using GraphPad Prism 9.0 one-way or two-way analysis of variance.The p value of less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance.Results:In the NMP group,the weight gained percentage was 11.72%±4.06%;the hypoxia-inducible factor-1αcontents showed no significant changes;the shape of muscle fibers was normal;the gap between muscle fibers slightly increased,showing the intercellular distance of(30.19±2.83)μm;and the vascularα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)contents were lower than those in the normal blood vessels.The creatine kinase level in the perfusate of the NMP group increased from the beginning of perfusion,decreased after each perfusate change,and remained stable at the end of perfusion showing a peak level of 4097.6 U/L.The lactate dehydrogenase level of the NMP group increased near the end of perfusion and reached the peak level of 374.4 U/L.In the SCS group,the percentage of weight gain was 0.18%±0.10%,and the contents of hypoxia-inducible factor-1αin

BACKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage using electrocautery-enhanced(ECE)delivery of lumen-apposing metal stent(LAMS)is gradually being re-cognized as a viable palliative technique for malignant biliary obstruction after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)failure.However,most of the studies that have assessed its efficacy and safety were small and hetero-geneous.Prior meta-analyses of six or fewer studies that were published 2 years ago were therefore underpowered to yield convincing evidence.AIM To update the efficacy and safety of ECE-LAMS for treatment of biliary ob-struction after ERCP failure.METHODS We searched PubMed,EMBASE,and Scopus databases from the inception of the ECE technique to May 13,2022.Primary outcome measure was pooled technical success rate,and secondary outcomes were pooled rates of clinical success,re-intervention,and adverse events.Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model following Freeman-Tukey double-arcsine transformation in R soft-ware(version 4.1.3).RESULTS Fourteen eligible studies involving 620 participants were ultimately included.The pooled rate of technical success was 96.7%,and clinical success was 91.0%.Adverse events were reported in 17.5%of patients.Overall reinter-vention rate was 7.3%.Subgroup analyses showed results were generally consistent.CONCLUSION ECE-LAMS has favorable success with acceptable adverse events in relieving biliary obstruction when ERCP is impossible.The consistency of results across most subgroups suggested that this is a generalizable approach.

Probiotics intervention in colorectal cancer:From traditional approaches to novel strategies

The intestine harbors a large population of microorganisms that interact with epithelial cells to maintain host healthy physiological status.These intestinal microbiota engage in the fermentation of non-digestible nutrients and produce beneficial metabolites to regulate host homeostasis,metabolism,and immune response.The disruption of microbiota,known as dysbiosis,has been implicated in many intestinal diseases,including colorectal cancer(CRC).As the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide,CRC poses a significant health burden.There is an urgent need for novel interventions to reduce CRC incidence and improve clinical outcomes.Modulating the intestinal microbiota has emerged as a promising approach for CRC prevention and treatment.Current research efforts in CRC probiotics primarily focus on reducing the incidence of CRC,alleviating treatment-related side effects,and potentiating the efficacy of anticancer therapy,which is the key to successful translation to clinical practice.This paper aims to review the traditional probiotics and new interventions,such as next-generation probiotics and postbiotics,in the context of CRC.The underlying mechanisms of probiotic anti-cancer effects are also discussed,including the restoration of microbial composition,reinforcement of gut barrier integrity,induction of cancer cell apoptosis,inactivation of carcinogens,and modulation of host immune response.This paper further evaluates the novel strategy of probiotics as an adjuvant therapy in boosting the efficacy of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.Despite all the promising findings presented in studies,the evaluation of potential risks,optimization of delivery methods,and consideration of intra-patient variability of gut microbial baseline must be thoroughly interpreted before bench-to-bedside translation.

The conversion of chalcogen atoms into other types of chalcogen atoms in transition metal dichalcogenides exhibits significant advantages in tuning the bandgaps and constructing lateral heterojunctions.However,despite atomic defects at the atomic scale were inevitably formed during conversion process,the construction of dislocations remains difficult.Here,we conducted in-situ sulfurization to achieve structural transformation from monolayer WSe2to WS2successfully.We probe these transformations at atomic scale using high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy（HAADF-STEM） and study structural defects of sulfurizedWS2by strain and displacement fields.We discovered that high-quality WSe2flakes were completely sulfurized while dislocations were successfully constructed,manifesting atomic surface roughness and structural disorders.Our work provides insights into designing and optimizing customized Transition metal dichalcogenides（TMDs）materials in controlled synthesis and defect engineering.

Relationship between physical activity and specific working memory indicators of depressive symptoms in university students

BACKGROUND The detection rate of depression among university students has been increasing in recent years,becoming one of the main psychological diseases that endangers their physical and mental health.According to statistics,self-harm and suicide,for which there is no effective intervention,are the second leading causes of death.AIM To explore the relationship between different elements and levels of physical activity and college students’depression-symptom-specific working memory indicators.METHODS Of 143 college students were analyzed using the Beck Depression Self-Rating Scale,the Physical Activity Rating Scale,and the Working Memory Task.RESULTS There was a significant difference between college students with depressive symptoms and healthy college students in completing verbal and spatial working memory(SWM)tasks correctly(all P0.05).CONCLUSION An increase in physical exercise among college students,particularly medium-and high-intensity exercise and exercise of 30 min or more,can improve the correct rate of completing working memory tasks.

The gut microbiome interacts with the host to maintain body homeostasis,with gut microbial dysbiosis implicated in many diseases.However,the underlying mechanisms of gut microbe regulation of host behavior and brain functions remain unclear.This study aimed to elucidate the influence of gut microbiota on brain functions via post-translational modification mechanisms in the presence or absence of bacteria without any stimulation.We conducted succinylome analysis of hippocampal proteins in germ-free(GF)and specific pathogen-free(SPF)mice and metagenomic analysis of feces from SPF mice.These results were integrated with previously reported hippocampal acetylome and phosphorylome data from the same batch of mice.Subsequent bioinformatics analyses revealed 584 succinylation sites on 455 proteins,including 54 up-regulated succinylation sites on 91 proteins and 99 down-regulated sites on 51 proteins in the GF mice compared to the SPF mice.We constructed a panoramic map of gut microbiota-regulated succinylation,acetylation,and phosphorylation,and identified cross-talk and relative independence between the different types of post-translational modifications in modulating complicated intracellular pathways.Pearson correlation analysis indicated that 13 taxa,predominantly belonging to the Bacteroidetes phylum,were correlated with the biological functions of post-translational modifications.Positive correlations between these taxa and succinylation and negative correlations between these taxa and acetylation were identified in the modulation of intracellular pathways.This study highlights the hippocampal physiological changes induced by the absence of gut microbiota,and proteomic quantification of succinylation,phosphorylation,and acetylation,contributing to our understanding of the role of the gut microbiome in brain function and behavioral phenotypes.

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a severe malignancy that poses a serious threat to human health.Owing to challenges in early diagnosis,most patients lose the opportunity for radical treatment when diagnosed.Nonetheless,recent advancements in cancer immunotherapy provide new directions for the treatment of HCC.For instance,monoclonal antibodies against immune check-point inhibitors(ICIs)such as programmed cell death protein 1/death ligand-1 inhibitors and cytotoxic t-lymphocyte associated antigen-4 significantly improved the prognosis of patients with HCC.However,tumor cells can evade the immune system through various mechanisms.With the rapid development of genetic engineering and molecular biology,various new immunotherapies have been used to treat HCC,including ICIs,chimeric antigen receptor T cells,engineered cytokines,and certain cancer vaccines.This review summarizes the current status,research progress,and future directions of different immunotherapy strategies in the treatment of HCC.
