Relationship between serum C3/C4 ratio and prognosis of immunoglobulin A nephropathy based on propensity score matching

Background:Aberrant activation of the complement system plays an important role in the pathogenesis and development of immunoglobulin A nephropathy(IgAN).The relationship between serum complement and the clinical-histopathological features and outcomes of IgAN is *** retrospective study aimed to examine the relationship between the complement 3/4(C3/C4)ratio and the clinicopathologic changes and prognosis of patients with ***:A total of 397 patients with primary IgAN from January 2007 to December 2012 at the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital were included in this *** correlation test and Chi-square test or one-way analysis of variance test were performed to evaluate the relationship between the C3/C4 ratio and other clinical-pathological *** score matching and a multivariate Cox regression model were used to calculate the risk factors of renal ***:The median follow-up period was 75 *** the follow-up period,62 patients(15.6%)developed into the endstage renal disease(ESRD).The C3/C4 ratio at baseline was associated with the level of serum creatinine(SCr),24 h urinary protein excretion(24 h Upre),global glomerular sclerosis,and tubulointerstitial *** level of SCr and 24 h Upre and the degree of chronic kidney injury were statistically different among groups defined by different C3/C4 ratio *** survival rates of patients among groups with different C3/C4 ratio levels were *** propensity score matching,eighty-eight pairs of patients were successfully matched,and the C3/C4 ratio was an influencing factor for the patients5 outcome(hazard ratio 0.587,95%confidence interval 0.329-0.880).Patients with a C3/C4 ratio<3.6 had a poorer outcome compared with the others(P=0.002).Conclusions:IgAN patients with decreased C3/C4 ratio displayed significantly more severe clinical symptoms and chronic renal injury than patients with higher ratios.A low C3/C4 ratio could be a risk

Progress of small ubiquitin-related modifiers in kidney diseases

Objective: Small ubiquitin-related modifiers (SUMOs) are a group of post-translational modification proteins extensively expressed in eukaryotes. Abnormal SUMOylation can lead to the development of various diseases. This article summarizes the progress on research of the role of SUMOs in various types of kidney diseases to further increase the understanding of the regulatory functions of SUMOylation in the pathogenesis of kidney diseases. Data sources: This review was based on articles published in the PubMed databases up to January 2018, using the keywords including "SUMOs," "SUMOylation," and "kidney diseases." Study selection: Original articles and critical reviews about SUMOs and kidney disease were selected for this review. A total of 50 studies were in English. Results: SUMO participates in the activation of NF-κB inflammatory signaling pathway, playing a central regulatory role in the inflammation and progression of DN, and the secretion of various chemokines in AKI. SUMO involves in the regulation of TG2 and Nrf2 antioxidant stress, affecting renal tubular injury in AKI. SUMO affects the MAPK/ERK pathway, regulating intracellular signal transduction, modulating the transcription and expression of effector molecules in DN. SUMO contributes to the TGF-β/Smad pathway, leading to fibrosis of the kidney. The conjugate combination of SUMO and p53 regulates cell proliferation and apoptosis, and participates in the regulation of tumorigenesis. In addition, SUMOylation of MITF modulates renal tumors secondary to melanoma, Similarly, SUMOylation of tumor suppressor gene VHL regulates the occurrence of renal cell carcinoma in VHL syndrome. Conclusions: Tissue injury, inflammatory responses, fibrosis, apoptosis, and tumor proliferation in kidney diseases all involve SUMOs. Further research of the substrate SUMOylation and regulatory mechanisms of SUMO in kidney diseases will improve and develop new treatment measures and strategies targeting kidney diseases.

Sea level variability in East China Sea and its response to ENSO

Sea level variability in the East China Sea （ECS） was examined based primarily on the analysis of TOPEX/Poseidon altimetry data and tide gauge data as well as numerical simulation with the Princeton ocean model （POM）. It is concluded that the inter-annual sea level variation in the ECS is negatively correlated with the ENSO index, and that the impact is more apparent in the southern area than in the northern area. Both data analysis and numerical model results also show that the sea level was lower during the typical E1 Niflo period of 1997 to 1998. E1 Nifio also causes the decrease of the annual sea level variation range in the ECS. This phenomenon is especially evident in the southern ECS. The impacts of wind stress and ocean circulation on the sea level variation in the ECS are also discussed in this paper. It is found that the wind stress most strongly affecting the sea level was in the directions of 70° and 20° south of east,, respectively, over the northern and southern areas of the ECS. The northwest wind is particularly strong when E1 Nifio occurs, and sea water is transported southeastward, which lowers the sea level in the southern ECS. The sea level variation in the southern ECS is also significantly affected by the strengthening of the Kuroshio. During the strengthening period of the Kuroshio, the sea level in the ECS usually drops, while the sea level rises when the Kuroshio weakens.

Sea level change under IPCC-A2 scenario in Bohai, Yellow, and East China Seas

Because of the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of anthropogenic sea level rise （SLR）, it is very important to understand the processes leading to past and present SLRs towards more reliable future SLR projections. A regional ocean general circulation model （ROGCM）, with a grid refinement in the Bohai, Yellow, and East China Seas （BYECSs）, was set up to project SLR induced by the ocean dynamic change in the 21st century. The model does not consider the contributions from ice sheets and glacier melting. Data of all forcing terms required in the model came from the simulation of the Community Climate System Model version 3.0 （CCSM3） under the International Panel on Climate Change （IPCC）-A2 scenario. Simulation results show that at the end of the 21st century, the sea level in the BYECSs will rise about 0.12 to 0.20 m. The SLR in the BYECSs during the 21st century is mainly caused by the ocean mass redistribution due to the ocean dynamic change of the Pacific Ocean, which means that water in the Pacific Ocean tends to move to the continental shelves of the BYECSs, although the local steric sea level change is another factor.

Seasonal and interannual variabilities of mean velocity of Kuroshio based on satellite data

Combining sea level anomalies with the mean dynamic topography derived from the geoid of the EGM08 global gravity field model and the CLS01 mean sea surface height, this study examined the characteristics of global geostrophic surface currents and the seasonal and interannual variabilities of the mean velocity of the Kuroshio （the Kuroshio source and Kuroshio extension）. The patterns of global geostrophic surface currents we derived and the actual ocean circulation are basically the same. The mean velocity of the Kuroshio source is high in winter and low in fall, and its seasonal variability accounts for 18% of its total change. The mean velocity of the Kuroshio extension is high in summer and low in winter, and its seasonal variability accounts for 25% of its total change. The interannual variabilities of the mean velocity of the Kuroshio source and Kuroshio extension are significant. The mean velocity of the Kuroshio source and ENSO index are inversely correlated. However, the relationship between the mean velocity of the Kuroshio extension and the ENSO index is not clear. Overall, the velocity of the Kuroshio increases when La Nina occurs and decreases when E1 Nino occurs.

Effect of short neuropeptide F signaling on larval feeding in Mythimna separata

Mythimna separata is a notorious phytophagous pest which poses serious threats to cereal crops owing to the gluttony of the *** short neuropeptide F(sNPF)and its receptor sNPFR are involved in a diversity of physiological functions,especially in functions related to feeding in insects,it is a molecular target for pest ***,an sNPF and 2 sNPFRs were identified and cloned from *** analysis revealed that the sNPF and its receptors had a highly conserved RLRFamide C-terminus and 7 transmembrane domains,*** sNPF and its receptor genes were distributed across larval periods and tissues,but 2 receptors had distinct expression *** starvation-induced assay elucidated that sNPF and sNPFR expression levels were downregulated under food deprivation and recovered with subsequent *** interference knockdown of sNPF,sNPFR1,and sNPFR2 by injection of double-stranded RNA into larvae not only suppressed food consumption and increased body size and weight,but also led to decrease of glycogen and total lipid contents,and increase of trehalose compared with double-stranded green fluorescent protein ***,molecular docking was performed on the interaction mode between sNPFR protein and its ligand sNPF based on the 3-dimensional models constructed by AlphaFold;the results indicated that both receptors were presumably activated by the mature peptide *** results revealed that sNPF signaling played a considerably vital role in the feeding regulation of *** and represents a potential control target for this pest.

To the Editor:Aging is associated with kidney dysfunction and an increased risk of cardiovascular *** connection between the cardiovascular system and kidney function is apparent,even in the early stage of renal *** C(CYSC),one of the cystatin superfamily that is expressed in all the nucleated cells,was considered to be one of the best indicators for evaluating renal function.[1]CYSC is a potent inhibitor of cathepsin B(CTSB),which is strictly regulated by CYSC in extracellular matrix *** between CYSC and CTSB are connected with atherosclerosis(AS),coronary heart disease,and chronic kidney disease with aging-related *** previous study confirmed that serum CTSB levels were associated with age and decreased cardiovascular-renal functions in healthy adults,[2]suggesting that CTSB exhibits heightened sensitivity to changes in cardiovascular and glomerular *** present investigation,underlining the role of synthetic and degradative pathways in the aging process,emphasizes that cardio-renal interaction with aging could depend partly on differential expression of some genes leading to an imbalance of functional *** this study,we analyzed the association between renal function,measured by CYSC and estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR),and vascular parameters in a healthy Chinese population.
