Comprehensive evaluation of 20 pomegranate(Punica granatum L.) cultivars in China

Recent investigations on pomegranate products have significantly increased and successfully drawn consumers’ attention to nutritional and medicinal values, promoting the pomegranate industry’s development worldwide. However, little information on pomegranates grown in China is available. Morphological and chemical characterizations of fruits and arils from 20 pomegranate cultivars in six regions of China were investigated. Combined with overall scores by principal component analysis, ‘Yushiliu No. 1’, ‘Taishanhong No. 2’, ‘Tunisia’ and ‘Mollar’ were promising cultivars, and Chinese researchers bred the first two. It was surprising that ‘Mollar’ had bigger fruit size and more aril moisture grown in China than in Spain. Cultivars with higher anthocyanin content in arils were ‘Turkey’, ‘Moyu’ and ‘Red Angel’, which might be used as the source of natural red food colourants. While red husk ‘Hongruyi’ and ‘Hongshuangxi’ with higher vitamin C, aril moisture and lower titratable acid in arils, might also be promising cultivars for further various utilization. Furthermore, the comparison of ‘Tunisia’ fruits from four regions revealed that cultivation locations had more influence on fruit traits than genotypes. Maturity index classification was established for Chinese pomegranate cultivars. Therefore, the results would provide a valuable guide for agricultural cultivation, industrial utilization, and breeding.

The therapeutic effect of CORM-3 on acute liver failure induced by lipopolysaccharide/D- galactosamine in mice

BACKGROUND： Acute liver failure （ALF） is a severe and life- threatening clinical syndrome resulting in a high mortality and extremely poor prognosis. Recently, a water-soluble CO-releas- ing molecule （CORM-3） has been shown to have anti-inflam- matory effect. The present study was to investigate the effect of CORM-3 on ALF and elucidate its underlying mechanism. METHODS： ALF was induced by a combination of LPS/D-GalN in mice which were treated with CORM-3 or inactive CORM-3 （iCORM-3）. The efficacy of CORM-3 was evaluated based on survival, liver histopathology, serum aminotransferase activi- ties （ALT and AST） and total bilirubin （TBiL）. Serum levels of inflammatory cytokines （TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and IL-10） and liver immunohistochemistry of NF-KB-p65 were determined; the expression of inflammatory mediators such as iNOS, COX-2 and TLR4 was measured using Western blotting. RESULTS： The pretreatment with CORM-3 significantly improved the liver histology and the survival rate of mice compared with the controls; CORM-3 also decreased the levels of ALT, AST and TBiL. Furthermore, CORM-3 significantly inhibited the increased concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines （TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β） and increased the anti-in- flammatory cytokine （IL-10） productions in ALF mice. More- over, CORM-3 significantly reduced the increased expression of iNOS and TLR4 in liver tissues and inhibited the nudear ex- pression of NF-KB-p65. CORM-3 had no effect on the increased expression of COX-2 in the ALF mice. An iCORM-3 failed to prevent acute liver damage induced by LPS/D-GalN. CONCLUSION： These findings provided evidence that CORM-3 may offer a novel alternative approach for the management of ALF through anti-inflammatory functions.

Mycophenolic acid derivatives from cultures of the mushroom Laetiporus sulphureu

AIM: To investigate the chemical constituents of the cultures of Laetiporus sulphureus(Bull.) Murrill. METHOD: Compounds were isolated and purified by various chromatographic techniques. The structure of the new compound was determined by interpretation of MS and 1D-, 2D-NMR spectroscopic data, while the known compounds were identified by comparison of their data with those reported. RESULTS: Three mycophenolic acid derivatives, 6-((2E, 6E)-3, 7-dimethyldeca-2, 6-dienyl)-7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-4-methylphtanlan-1-one(1), 6-((2E, 6E)-3, 7, 11-trimethyldedoca-2, 6, 10-trienyl)-5, 7-dihydroxy-4-methylphtanlan-1-one(2), and 6-((2E, 6E)-3, 7, 11-trimethyldedoca-2, 6, 10-trienyl)-7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-4-methylphtanlan-1-one(3) were isolated. CONCLUSION: Among them, compound 1 was new, and compound 2 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, and MCF-7 cells, with IC50 values of 39.1, 31.1, 27.4, and 35.7 μmol·L-1, respectively.

Association of CT perfusion imaging with plasma levels of TGF-β1 and VEGF in patients with NSCLC

Objective: To study the association of CT perfusion imaging parameters with plasma level of transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1) and vascular endothelial growth(VEGF) in patients with non small cell cancer(NSCLC). Methods: A total of 67 patients with NSCLC(NSCLC group) and 64 patients with benign lesion(control group) were given with CT perfusion imaging to obtain blood flow, blood volume, mean transit time, time to peal and permeability surface through CT perfusion software. The plasma levels of TGF-β1 and VEGF were tested by ELISA. The relationship between plasma levels of TGF-β1, VEGF and CT perfusion imaging parameters were analyzed. Results: CT perfusion imaging parameters and the plasma levels of TGF-β1 and VEGF of NSCLC group were significantly higher than the control group(P<0.05), while CT perfusion parameters and the levels of TGF-β1 and VEGF in NSCLC group showed significant difference in different tumor node metastasis stages(P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that the level of plasma TGF-β1 and VEGF were positively correlated with blood flow, blood volume, and mean transit time(P<0.05), and negatively correlated with time to peal(P<0.05). There was no significant correlation between TGF-β1 and VEGF with the permeability surface. Conclusions: CT perfusion imaging parameters in patients with NSCLC is closely associated with plasma TGF-β1, VEGF and its biological characteristics. CT perfusion imaging is a convenient method to detect tumor blood perfusion.

Excellent irradiation resistance is the basic property of nuclear materials to keep nuclear *** high-entropy design has great potential to improve the irradiation resistance of the nuclear materials,which has been proven in ***,whether or not high entropy can also improve the irradiation resistance of ceramics,especially the mechanism therein still needs to be *** this work,the irradiation and helium(He)behaviors of zirconium carbide(ZrC)-based high-entropy ceramics(HECs),i.e.,(Zr_(0.2)Ti_(0.2)Nb_(0.2)Ta_(0.2)W_(0.2))C,were investigated and compared with those of ZrC under 540 keV He ion irradiation with a dose of 1×10^(17) cm^(−2) at room temperature and subsequent *** ZrC and(Zr_(0.2)Ti_(0.2)Nb_(0.2)Ta_(0.2)W_(0.2))C maintain lattice integrity after irradiation,while the irradiation-induced lattice expansion is smaller in(Zr_(0.2)Ti_(0.2)Nb_(0.2)Ta_(0.2)W_(0.2))C(0.78%)with highly thermodynamic stability than that in ZrC(0.91%).After annealing at 800℃,ZrC exhibits the residual _(0.2)0%lattice expansion,while(Zr_(0.2)Ti_(0.2)Nb_(0.2)Ta_(0.2)W_(0.2))C shows only 0.10%.Full recovery of the lattice parameter(a)is achieved for both ceramics after annealing at 1500℃.In addition,the high entropy in the meantime brings about the favorable structural evolution phenomena including smaller He bubbles that are evenly distributed without abnormal coarsening or aggregation,segregation,and shorter and sparser *** excellent irradiation resistance is related to the high-entropy-induced phase stability,sluggish diffusion of defects,and stress dispersion along with the production of vacancies by valence *** present study indicates a high potential of high-entropy carbides in irradiation resistance applications.

Effect of Molybdenum Disulfide Exfoliation Conditions on the Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites

In this work, the MoS2 fillers were prepared through chemical exfoliation method and used as fillers to fabricate epoxy (EP)/MoS2 nanocomposites. The effects of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) intercalation conditions on the properties of EP/MoS2 nanocomposites were investigated. As the intercalation time was prolonged, the surface of MoS2 exhibited a totally crumpled structure and more functional groups formed. Because of the higher functional group concentration, the interfacial adhesion force between EP and MoS2 was enhanced. With the addition of 1.0 wt% exfoliated MoS2 fillers, the tensile strength and tensile modulus of EP were even improved ~500% and ~6800%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides a facile way to produce high-performance EP nanocomposites.
