By automatically learning the priors embedded in images with powerful modelling ca-pabilities,deep learning-based algorithms have recently made considerable progress in reconstructing the high-resolution hyperspectral(HR-HS)image.With previously collected large-amount of external data,these methods are intuitively realised under the full supervision of the ground-truth data.Thus,the database construction in merging the low-resolution(LR)HS(LR-HS)and HR multispectral(MS)or RGB image research paradigm,commonly named as HSI SR,requires collecting corresponding training triplets:HR-MS(RGB),LR-HS and HR-HS image simultaneously,and often faces dif-ficulties in reality.The learned models with the training datasets collected simultaneously under controlled conditions may significantly degrade the HSI super-resolved perfor-mance to the real images captured under diverse environments.To handle the above-mentioned limitations,the authors propose to leverage the deep internal and self-supervised learning to solve the HSI SR problem.The authors advocate that it is possible to train a specific CNN model at test time,called as deep internal learning(DIL),by on-line preparing the training triplet samples from the observed LR-HS/HR-MS(or RGB)images and the down-sampled LR-HS version.However,the number of the training triplets extracted solely from the transformed data of the observation itself is extremely few particularly for the HSI SR tasks with large spatial upscale factors,which would result in limited reconstruction performance.To solve this problem,the authors further exploit deep self-supervised learning(DSL)by considering the observations as the unlabelled training samples.Specifically,the degradation modules inside the network were elaborated to realise the spatial and spectral down-sampling procedures for transforming the generated HR-HS estimation to the high-resolution RGB/LR-HS approximation,and then the reconstruction errors of the observations were formulated for measuring the network modelling performance.By cons

Urban development and resource endowments shape natural resource utilization efficiency in Chinese cities

Improving the efficiency with which natural resources are utilized is an indispensable for achieving sustainable development and carbon neutrality. By analyzing the utilization efficiency of energy, water, and land, we established a comprehensive natural resource utilization efficiency index(NRUEI). We then calculated the 2016 index for 165 cities in China,and investigated what caused it to vary. We found three main results:(1) the NRUEI varied greatly across China and there were significant positive correlations between urban energy utilization efficiency(EUE), water utilization efficiency(WUE) and land utilization efficiency(LUE);(2) the NRUEI showed a significant positive correlation with a city’s population size,economy(Gross Domestic Product(GDP)), and the level of urban social development(GDP per capita);(3) cities in East China have the highest natural resource utilization efficiency,while cities in Northeast China have the lowest. These results indicate that China’s increasing urban development is associated with rising natural resource utilization efficiency and that the city’s endowment of natural resources is an important factor affecting that efficiency. Further, the results showed that the determinants of a city’s NRUEI differed in large and small cities. Lastly, our results suggest that improving EUE is key for improving NRUEI in urban China, and different efficiencies can be improved intertwined. A major takeaway of this study is that there is great potential for improving natural resource utilization efficiency in Chinese cities and we include city-specific suggestions for efficiency improvements.

Integrating nanoscale zero-valent iron(nZVI) with biological treatment processes holds the promise of inheriting significant advantages from both environmental nano-and biotechnologies. nZVI and microbes can perform in coalition in direct contact and act simultaneously, or be maintained in separate reactors and operated sequentially. Both modes can generate enhanced performance for wastewater treatment and environmental remediation. nZVI scavenges and eliminates toxic metals, and enhances biodegradability of some recalcitrant contaminants while bioprocesses serve to mineralize organic compounds and further remove impurities from wastewater. This has been demonstrated in a number of recent works that nZVI can substantially augment the performance of conventional biological treatment for wastewaters from textile and nonferrous metal industries. Our recent laboratory and field tests show that COD of the industrial effluents can be reduced to a record-low of 50 ppm. Recent literature on the theory and applications of the nZVI-bio system is highlighted in this mini review.

Unconventional oil and gas resources have become the most important and realistic field for increasing China’s domestic oil and gas reserves and production.At present,the production scale does not match the massive amount of resources and the rapid growth of proven geological reserves.The challenges of technology,cost,management,and methodology restrict large-scale and economic development.Based on successful practices,a"one engine with six gears"system engineering methodology is put forward,which includes life-cycle management,overall synergy,interdisciplinary cross-service integration,marketoriented operation,socialized support,digitalized management,and low-carbon and green development.The methodology has been proved to be effective in multiple unconventional oil and gas national demonstration areas,including the Jimusar continental shale oil demonstration area.Disruptive views are introduced-namely,that unconventional oil and gas do not necessarily yield a low return,nor do they necessarily have a low recovery factor.A determination to achieve economic benefit must be a pervasive underlying goal for managers and experts.Return and recovery factors,as primary focuses,must be adhered to during China’s development of unconventional oil and gas.The required methodology transformation includes a revolution in management systems to significantly decrease cost and increase production,resulting in technological innovation.

D-optimal Designs for Multiresponse Linear Models with a Qualitative Factor Under General Covariance Structure

This paper considers a linear regression model involving both quantitative and qualitative factors and an m-dimensional response variable y. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate D-optimal designs when the levels of the qualitative factors interact with the levels of the quantitative factors. Under a general covariance structure of the response vector y, here we establish that the determinant of the information matrix of a product design can be separated into two parts corresponding to the two marginal designs. Moreover, it is also proved that D-optimal designs do not depend on the covariance structure if we assume hierarchically ordered system of regression models.

A dynamic quantitative theory and measurement of power or dominance structures are proposed.Such power structures are represented as directed networks.A graph somewhat similar to the Lorenz curve for inequality measurement is introduced.The changes in the graph resulting from network dynamics are studied.Dynamics are operationalized in terms of added nodes and links.Study of dynamic aspects of networks is essential for potential applications in many fields such as business management,politics,and social interactions.As such,we provide examples of a dominance structure in a directed,acyclic network.We calculate the change in the D-measure,which is a measure expressing the degree of dominance in a network when nodes are added to an existing simple network.

Inhibition of thrombin by functionalized C_(60)nanoparticles revealed via in vitro assays and in silico studies

The studies on the human toxicity of nanoparticles（NPs） are far behind the rapid development of engineered functionalized NPs. Fullerene has been widely used as drug carrier skeleton due to its reported low risk. However, different from other kinds of NPs, fullerene-based NPs（C_（60） NPs） have been found to have an anticoagulation effect, although the potential target is still unknown. In the study, both experimental and computational methods were adopted to gain mechanistic insight into the modulation of thrombin activity by nine kinds of C_（60） NPs with diverse surface chemistry properties. In vitro enzyme activity assays showed that all tested surface-modified C_（60） NPs exhibited thrombin inhibition ability. Kinetic studies coupled with competitive testing using 3 known inhibitors indicated that six of the C_（60） NPs, of greater hydrophobicity and hydrogen bond（HB） donor acidity or acceptor basicity, acted as competitive inhibitors of thrombin by directly interacting with the active site of thrombin. A simple quantitative nanostructure-activity relationship model relating the surface substituent properties to the inhibition potential was then established for the six competitive inhibitors.Molecular docking analysis revealed that the intermolecular HB interactions were important for the specific binding of C_（60） NPs to the active site canyon, while the additional stability provided by the surface groups through van der Waals interaction also play a key role in the thrombin binding affinity of the NPs. Our results suggest that thrombin is a possible target of the surface-functionalized C_（60） NPs relevant to their anticoagulation effect.

Reverse-selective membranes have attracted considerable interest for bioethanol production.However,to date,the reverse-separation performance of ethanol/water is poor and the separation mechanism is unclear.Graphene-based membranes with tunable apertures and functional groups have shown substantial potential for use in molecular separation.Using molecular dynamics simulations,for the first time,we reveal twoway selectivity in ethanol/water separation through functional graphene membranes.Pristine graphene(PG)exhibits reverse-selective behavior with higher ethanol fluxes than water,resulting from the preferential adsorption for ethanol.Color flow mappings show that this ethanol-permselective process is initiated by the presence of ethanol-enriched and water-barren pores;this has not been reported in previous studies.In contrast,water molecules are preferred for hydroxylated graphene membranes because of the synergistic effects of molecular sieving and functional-group attraction.A simulation of the operando condition shows that the PG membrane with an aperture size of 3.8Åachieves good separation performance,with an ethanol/water separation factor of 34 and a flux value of 69.3 kg∙m‒2∙h‒1∙bar‒1.This study provides new insights into the reverse-selective mechanism of porous graphene membranes and a new avenue for efficient biofuel production.

Within the framework of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model,we simulate^(129)Xe+^(119)Sn collisions in an incident energy range of 20 to 190MeV/nucleon and discuss the liquid-gas phase transition with density fluctuations.For comparison,we also extract the effective Fisher parameter τ_(eff),multiplicity of intermediate-mass fragments(IMFs),and information entropy.It is found that the Fisher parameter and maximum information entropy of collisions have peak values at E_(beam)=50-80 MeV/nucleon.In addition,the maximum multiplicity of IMFs has a plateau around 70 MeV/nucleon.For higher-order density moments in a larger central region of[-5,5]^(3) fm^(3) in the collision system,a maximum plateau also appears as function of beam energy at energies exceeding 70 MeV/nucleon.These observables,which are consistent with each other,indicate a liquid-gas phase transition around 70 MeV/nucleon for the^(129)Xe+^(119)Sn system.
