Cr 4+ ∶YAG crystal was used as a saturable absorber in an active-passive mode-locked Nd∶YAG laser. The stable and complete mode-locked pulse train was achieved at 1064 nm. The duration of ～0.8 ns to 2.4 ns for a single pulse was obtained by using Cr 4+ ∶YAG crystals with the different initial transmissions, and there was a shortest pulse width. The mode-locking dynamic process of Cr 4+ ∶YAG crystal was discussed to explain the experimental result, and the effect of excited-state absorption was considered.

The effect of incoherent population pumping on the steady-s tate population inversion and the quadrature squeezing spectra produced in the resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom is investigated. In the presence of incoherent population pumping, the steady-state population inversion is increased for small frequency detuning but is not changed for large frequency detuning. For resonant excitation at low intensities, the weak incoherent pumping degrades the degree of the squeezing and shifts the position of the maximum squeezing; for off-resonant excitation at strong intensities, the weak incoherent pumping hardly changes the squeezing spectra. But when the incoherent pumping is strong the squeezing may be completely destroyed for both cases.

In order to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we have decribed the wavepacket propagation algorithm with wave function splitting in detail. With this method, much interested information can be got from the evolution of *** with the general time-consumed two-order differencing method, thewavepacket propagation algorithm can save computation time especially for the case of ultra-intense interaction. As an cxample, the harmonic emission and the multiphoton ionization probability of an atomic helium exposed in an intense laser pulse were calculated.

A method for inertial confinement fusion driven by powerful long wavelength electromagnetic pulses(EMPs), such as CO2 laser pulses or high power microwave pulses, is proposed. Due to the high efficiency of generating such long wavelength electromagnetic pulses, this method is especially important for the future fusion electricity power. Special fuel targets are designed to overcome the shortcomings of the long wavelength electromagnetic pulses.

Multidimensional instabilities always develop with time during the process of radiation pressure acceleration,and are detrimental to the generation of monoenergetic proton *** this paper,a sharp-front laser is proposed to irradiate a triple-layer target(the proton layer is set between two carbon ion layers)and studied in theory and *** is found that the thin proton layer can be accelerated once to hundreds of MeV with monoenergetic spectra only during the hole-boring(HB)*** carbon ions move behind the proton layer in the light-sail(LS)stage,which can shield any further interaction between the rear part of the laser and the proton *** this way,proton beam instabilities can be reduced to a certain extent during the entire acceleration *** is hoped such a mechanism can provide a feasible way to improve the beam quality for proton therapy and other applications.

The influence on the level of amplified spontaneous emission （ASE） contrast resulting from the different seed pulse energies has been experimentally studied in a 10-TW-level femtosecond Ti：sapphire chirped pulse amplification laser. It is found that, with the seed pulse energy increasing, the ASE pedestal is suppressed more efficiently, and the ASE contrast is improved with a saturable tendency. The measurement of -2×10^-8 ASE contrast in the range of more than 50 ps before the main pulse is achieved in the laser.
