Interannual modulation of intraseasonal sea level variability along the southern coast of Java

The intraseasonal variability(ISV) of sea level anomalies(SLAs) along the southern coast of Java and its interannual modulation were studied based on a gridded SLA product produced from the Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanography dataset. This ISV is induced by the propagation of intraseasonal Kelvin waves derived from the central equatorial Indian Ocean(EIO). Wavelet analysis and empirical mode decomposition of intraseasonal SLAs along the southern coast of Java showed interannual variability, with weaker ISV events during El Ni years and positive Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD) years than during normal years. This interannual modulation of the ISV is influenced by the El Ni-Southern Oscillation teleconnection via the Walker Circulation and eastern Indian Ocean upwelling connected to IOD events. The anomalously weaker Walker Circulation during El Ni events generates anomalous surface easterlies over the central-eastern tropical Indian Ocean that produce upwelling Kelvin waves in the EIO and offshore water transport along the southern coasts of Sumatra and Java, resulting in negative SLAs along the southern coast of Java. These negative SLAs damp the positive SLAs induced by the eastward propagation of downwelling Kelvin waves from the central EIO during the following March–May of El Ni years. Similar features of SLAs and sea surface wind anomalies also occur during positive IOD years. Consequently, the sea level ISV along the southern coast of Java is weaker in El Ni and positive IOD years.

Climate variability and predictability associated with the Indo-Pacific Oceanic Channel Dynamics in the CCSM4 Coupled System Model

An experiment using the Community Climate System Model(CCSM4), a participant of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase-5(CMIP5), is analyzed to assess the skills of this model in simulating and predicting the climate variabilities associated with the oceanic channel dynamics across the Indo-Pacific Oceans. The results of these analyses suggest that the model is able to reproduce the observed lag correlation between the oceanic anomalies in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean and those in the cold tongue in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean at a time lag of 1 year. This success may be largely attributed to the successful simulation of the interannual variations of the Indonesian Throughflow, which carries the anomalies of the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD) into the western equatorial Pacific Ocean to produce subsurface temperature anomalies, which in turn propagate to the eastern equatorial Pacific to generate ENSO. This connection is termed the "oceanic channel dynamics" and is shown to be consistent with the observational analyses. However, the model simulates a weaker connection between the IOD and the interannual variability of the Indonesian Throughflow transport than found in the observations. In addition, the model overestimates the westerly wind anomalies in the western-central equatorial Pacific in the year following the IOD, which forces unrealistic upwelling Rossby waves in the western equatorial Pacific and downwelling Kelvin waves in the east. This assessment suggests that the CCSM4 coupled climate system has underestimated the oceanic channel dynamics and overestimated the atmospheric bridge processes.

Wind-forced equatorial wave dynamics of the Pacific Ocean during 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 E1 Nino events

The equatorial wave dynamics of interannual sea level variations between 2014/2015 and2015/2016 El Nino events are compared using the Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics,Institute of Atmospheric Physics Climate Ocean Model(LICOM) forced by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP) reanalysis I wind stre s s and heat flux during *** addition,the LICOM can reproduce the interannual variability of sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTA) and sea level anomalies(SLA) along the equator over the Pacific Ocean in comparison with the Hadley center and altimetric data *** extracted the equatorial wave coefficients of LICOM simulation to get the contribution to SLA by multiplying the meridional wave *** 2014/2015 El Nino event,upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves from the western boundary in April2014 reach the eastern Pacific Ocean,which weakened SLA in the eastern Pacific ***,no upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves from the western boundary of the Pacific Ocean could reach the eastern boundary during the 2015/2016 El Nino *** wave model results also demonstrate that upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves in both 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 from the western boundary can reach the eastern ***,the contribution from stronger westerly anomalies forced downwelling equatorial Kelvin waves overwhelmed that from the upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves from the western boundary in ***,the western boundary reflection and weak westerly wind burst inhibited the growth of the 2014/2015 El Nino *** disclosed equatorial wave dynamics are important to the simulation and prediction of ENSO events in future studies.

Objective array design for three-dimensional temperature and salinity observation:Application to the South China Sea

In this study,a moored array optimization tool(MAOT)was developed and applied to the South China Sea(SCS)with a focus on three-dimensional temperature and salinity *** of the MAOT involves two steps:(1)deriving a set of optimal arrays that are independent of each other for different variables at different depths based on an empirical orthogonal function method,and(2)consolidating these arrays using a K-center clustering *** with the assumed initial array consisting of 17 mooring sites located on a 3°×3°horizontal grid,the consolidated array improved the observing ability for three-dimensional temperature and salinity in the SCS with optimization efficiencies of 19.03%and 21.38%,*** with an increased number of moored sites showed that the most cost-effective option is a total of 20 moorings,improving the observing ability with optimization efficiencies up to 26.54%for temperature and 27.25%for *** design of an objective array relies on the ocean phenomenon of interest and its spatial and temporal *** this study,we focus on basin-scale variations in temperature and salinity in the SCS,and thus our consolidated array may not well resolve mesoscale *** MAOT can be extended to include other variables and multi-scale variability and can be applied to other regions.

Correlation analysis of the North Equatorial Current bifurcation and the Indonesian Throughflow

Based on monthly mean Simple Ocean Data Assimilation （SODA） products from 1958 to 2007, this study analyzes the seasonal and interannual variability of the North Equatorial Current （NEC） bifurcation latitude and the Indonesian Throughflow （ITF） volume transport. Further, Empirical Mode Decomposition （EMD） method and lag-correlation analysis are employed to reveal the relationships between the NEC bifurcation location, NEC and ITF volume transport and ENSO events. The analysis results of the seasonal variability show that the annual mean location of NEC bifurcation in upper layer occurs at 14.33°N and ITF volume transport has a maximum value in summer, a minimum value in winter and an annual mean transport of 7.75×10^6 m^3/s. The interannual variability analysis indicates that the variability of NEC bifurcation location can be treated as a precursor of El Nino. The correlation coefficient between the two reaches the maximum of 0.53 with a time lag of 2 months. The ITF volume transport is positively related with E1 Nifio events with a maximum coefficient of 0.60 by 3 months. The NEC bifurcation location is positively correlated with the ITF volume transport with a correlation coefficient of 0.43.

Seasonal variability of the isopycnal surface circulation in the South China Sea derived from a variable-grid global ocean circulation model

In this study, we develop a variable-grid global ocean general circulation model （OGCM） with a fine grid （1/6）° covering the area from 20°S-50°N and from 99°-150°E, and use the model to investigate the isopycnal surface circulation in the South China Sea （SCS）. The simulated results show four layer structures in vertical： the surface and subsurface circulation of the SCS are characterized by the monsoon driven circulation, with basin-scaled cyclonic gyre in winter and anti-cyclonic gyre in summer. The intermediate layer circulation is opposite to the upper layer, showing anti-cyclonic gyre in winter but cyclonic gyre in summer. The circulation in the deep layer is much weaker in spring and summer, with the maximum velocity speed below 0.6 cm/s. In fall and winter, the SCS deep layer circulation shows strong east boundary current along the west coast of Philippine with the velocity speed at 1.5 m/s, which flows southward in fall and northward in winter. The results have also revealed a fourlayer vertical structure of water exchange through the Luzon Strait. The dynamics of the intermediate and deep circulation are attributed to the monsoon driving and the Luzon Strait transport forcing.

Effect of barium sulfate modification on the SO2 tolerance of V2O5/TiO2 catalyst for NH3-SCR reaction

Sulfur poisoning of V_2O_5/BaSO_4–TiO_2（VBT）,V_2O_5/WO_3–TiO_2（VWT） and V_2O_5/BaSO_4–WO_3–TiO_2（VBWT） catalysts was performed in wet air at 350℃ for 3 hr,and activities for the selective catalytic reduction of NO_x with NH_3 were evaluated for 200–500℃.The VBT catalyst showed higher NO_x conversions after sulfur poisoning than the other two *** introduction of barium sulfate contributed to strong acid sites for the as-received catalyst,and eliminated the redox cycle of active vanadium oxide to some extent,which resulted in a certain loss of *** decomposable sulfate species formed on VBT-S instead of inactive sulfates on *** decomposable sulfates increased the number of strong acid sites *** sulfate species escaped during catalyst preparation and barium sulfate was reproduced during sulfur poisoning,which protects vanadia from sulfur oxide attachment to a great ***,the VBT catalyst exhibited the best resistance to sulfur poisoning.

A harmonic analyzed parameterization of tide-induced mixing for ocean models

The tide-induced mixing plays an important role in the regulation of ocean *** simulation of continental shelf circulation is found to exhibit an unreasonable vertical thermohaline structure without consideration of tide *** this study,we establish a harmonic analyzed parameterization of tide-induced（HAT） mixing,by which means to derive time-depended function of mixing coefficient based on harmonic analysis of the vertical mixing *** employing HAT mixing parameterization scheme,a series of numerical experiments are conducted for the Yellow *** results show that an ocean circulation model with the HAT mixing involved is capable of reproducing the reasonable thermohaline structure of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass,similar to structures produced by explicit tidal forcing on the open *** advantage of the HAT method is its faster computation time,compared with models that directly resolve explicit tidal *** HAT parameterization for the tide-induced mixing has potential to improve both the accuracy and efficiency of ocean circulation and climate models.

Detecting maize leaf water status by using digital RGB images

To explore the correlation between crop leaf digital RGB(Red,Green and Blue)image features and the corresponding moisture content of the leaf,a Canon digital camera was used to collect image information from detached leaves of heading-stage maize.A drying method was adopted to measure the moisture content of the leaf samples,and image processing technologies,including gray level co-occurrence matrices and grayscale histograms,was used to extract the maize leaf texture feature parameters and color feature *** correlations of these feature parameters with moisture content were *** is found that the texture parameters of maize leaf RGB images,including contrast,correlation,entropy and energy,were not significantly correlated with moisture ***,it was difficult to use these features to predict moisture *** the six groups of eigenvalues for the leaf color feature parameters,including mean,variance,energy,entropy,kurtosis and skewness,mean and kurtosis were found to be correlated with moisture ***,these features could be used to predict the leaf moisture *** correlation coefficient(R2)of the mean-moisture content relationship model was 0.7017,and the error of the moisture content prediction was within±2%.The R2 of the kurtosis-moisture content relationship model was 0.7175,and the error of the moisture content prediction was within±1.5%.The study results proved that RGB images of crop leaves could be used to measure moisture content.

Vertical velocity and transport in the South China Sea

Deep water in the South China Sea is renewed by the cold and dense Luzon Strait ***,from where and how the deep water upwells is poorly understood *** on the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model reanalysis data,vertical velocity is derived to answer these ***-integrated vertical velocity is of two maxima,one in the shallow water and the other at depth,and separated by a layer of minimum at the bottom of the *** analysis shows that this two-segmented vertical transport is attributed to the vertical compensation of subsurface water to the excessive outflow of shallow water and upward push of the dense Luzon Strait overflow,*** the abyssal basin,the vertical transport increases upward from zero at the depth of 3500–4000 m and reaches a maximum of 1.5×10^(6) m^(3)/s at about 1500 *** water upwells mainly from the northeastern and southwestern ends of the abyssal basin and off the continental *** explain the upward velocity arising from slope breaks,a possible mechanism is proposed that an onshore velocity component can be derived from the deep western boundary current above steep slopes under bottom friction.
