Identification and anatomy of oceanic arcs within ancient orogenic belt are significant for better understanding the tectonic framework and closure process of paleo-ocean basin.This article summarizes the geological,geochemical,and geochronological characteristics of upper crust of Proto-Tethyan Lajishan intra-oceanic arc and provides new data to constrain the subduction evolution of the South Qilian Ocean.The intra-oceanic arc volcanic rocks,including intermediate-mafic lava,breccia,tuff,and minor felsic rocks,are distributed along southern part of the Lajishan ophiolite belt.Geochemical and isotopic compositions indicate that the intermediate-mafic lava were originated from depleted mantle contaminated by sediment melts or hydrous fluids,whereas the felsic rocks were likely generated by partial melting of juvenile mafic crust in intra-oceanic arc setting.Zircons from felsic rocks yield consistent and concordant ages ranging from 506 to 523 Ma,suggesting these volcanic rocks represent the relicts of upper crust of the Cambrian intra-oceanic arc.Combined with the Cambrian forearc ophiolite and accretionary complex,we suggest that the Cambrian intra-oceanic arc in the Lajishan ophiolite belt is belonging to the intra-oceanic arc system which was generated by south-directed subduction in the South Qilian Ocean at a relatively short interval between approximately 530 and 480 Ma.

Episodic Paleozoic Adakitic Magmatism in the Eastern Tianshan,Southern Altaids:Implications for Petrogenesis and Geodynamics

The adakites rocks are typically considered as direct diagnostic evidence for subduction and continental growth,as well as the important evidence to determine the location of the major oceanic basin and evolution history of lost oceanic basins,which are longstanding conundrums for understanding the tectonics of the Paleo-Asian Ocean(PAO).As the processor of the Altaids,the PAO was a long-lived ocean,and its multiple subductions led to substantial continental growth in the Central Asian continent.Here we report our newly discovered Paleozoic adakitic rocks(granite and dacite)developed in Jijitaizi in the Eastern Tianshan of the southern Altaids to address the above issues.The Jijitaizi granite and dacite contain high concentrations of Sr(203-343 ppm)and low concentrations of Y(3.00-6.36 ppm)and Yb(0.23-0.62 ppm),indicative of the adakitic affinity.Zircon U-Pb dating results show that the adakitic rocks were formed in three episodes at 372.26±1.51 Ma,356.02±1.11 Ma and 334.51±0.68 Ma from the Late Devonian to Carboniferous.The rocks are depleted in Nb,P and Ti,and possess variable Mg#values(28.51-57.22),high Na_(2)O/K_(2)O ratios(1.39-4.94),as well as relatively depleted Hf isotopic compositions,all of which point to a subduction origin from slab melting.Our new finding with the date from the Jijitaizi complex(ca.321 Ma)suggests continuing subduction of the Paleo-Asian oceanic slab beneath the Central Tianshan from the Late Devonian to Carboniferous.Our work provides a solid line of key evidence demonstrating that continuous oceanic subduction of the major PAO evolved into its mature stage following subducting beneath the Central Tianshan from ca.372 to 321 Ma.

The chemical evolution and pressure-temperature conditions of subduction zone magmatism along ancient suture zones in orogenic belts can provide important information regarding plate convergence processes in paleo-oceans.Carboniferous magmatism in West Junggar is key to understanding the tectonothermal and subduction history of the Junggar Ocean,which was a branch of the Paleo-Asian Ocean,as well as the accretionary processes in the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB).We undertook a geochronological,mineralogical,geochemical,and Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotopic study of volcanic rocks from the Baikouquan area of West Junggar.We used these data to determine the petrogenesis,mantle source,and pressure-temperature conditions of these magmas,and further constrain the subduction and tectonic history of the Junggar Ocean.The studied volcanic rocks yielded zircon U-Pb ages of 342-337 Ma and are characterized by enrichments of large-ion lithophile elements(LILEs),and depletions in high-field-strength elements(HFSEs),indicative of an island arc affinity.The volcanic rocks have positiveƐNd(t)(5.83-7.04)andƐHf(t)(13.47-15.74)values,87Sr/86Sr(t)ratios of 0.704023-0.705658,and radiogenic 207Pb/204Pb(t)and 208Pb/204Pb(t)ratios at a given 206Pb/204Pb(t)ratio,indicative of a depleted mantle source contaminated by subduction-related materials.Geochemical modeling calculations indicate that≤1%of a subduction component comprising fluid and sediment melt could have generated the source of the parental melts of the Baikouquan volcanic rocks.Clinopyroxene phenocrysts in the volcanic rocks are classified as high-and low-Ti clinopyroxene,and pressure-temperature calculations suggest the host rocks formed at high temperatures(~1300℃)and shallow to moderate depths(<2 GPa).The magma was probably generated by hot and hydrous melting in a mantle wedge in response to subduction of young,hot oceanic lithosphere.The present results,combined with published data,suggest that the Baikouquan volcanic rocks record a transition in tectonic setting fro

The Central Tianshan Block is one of numerous microcontinental blocks within the Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB)that overlies Precambrian basement rocks.Constraining the evolution of these ancient basement rocks is central to understanding the accretionary and collisional tectonics of the CAOB,and their place within the Rodinia supercontinent.However,to date,the timing and tectonic settings in which the basement rocks in the Central Tianshan Block formed are poorly constrained,with only sparse geochemical and geochronological data from granitic rocks within the northern segment of the block.Here,we present a systematic study combining U-Pb geochronology,whole-rock geochemistry,and the Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of newly-identified granitic gneisses from the Bingdaban area of Central Tianshan Block.The analyzed samples yield a weighted mean Neoproterozoic 206Pb/238U ages of 975-911 Ma.These weakly-peraluminous granitic rocks show a common geochemical I-type granite affinity.The granitic gneisses are calc-alkaline and enriched in large ion lithophile elements(LILEs)and light rare earth elements(LREEs),but they are depleted in high field strength elements(HFSEs);these characteristics are similar to those of typical subduction-related magmatism.All samples show initial(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr)(t)ratios between 0.705136 and 0.706745.Values forεNd(t)in the granitic gneisses are in the range from-5.7 to-1.2,which correspond to Nd model ages of 2.0-1.7 Ga,indicating a role for Mesoproterozoic to Paleoproterozoic rocks in the generation of the granitic protoliths.The documented geochemical features indicate that the protoliths for the gneisses have a similar petrogenesis and magmatic source,which may reflect partial melting of thickened crust with the addition of small amounts of mantle-derived material.The Central Tianshan Block probably constitute part of an exterior orogen that developed along the margin of the Rodinian supercontinent during the Early Neoproterozoic and underwent a transition from subduction to syn-collisio

Rhenium-Osmium Isotope Constraints on the Origin of the Tianyu Cu-Ni Deposit in the East Tianshan Orogenic Belt, Xinjiang, NW China

The Tianyu Cu-Ni sulfide deposit occurs in the north margin of the Central Tianshan Arc in East Tianshan orogenic belt, Xinjiang, NW China. The intrusions consist of gabbro, peridotite, and olivine pyroxenite. The peridotite and pyroxenite are the main host rock for the Cu-Ni ores. Rhenium and osmium isotopic analyses of Ni-and Cu-bearing sulfide minerals from the deposit have been used to determine the source of osmium, and by inference, the sources of ore metals. Sulfide ore samples have Os and Re concentrations varying in the ranges 1.85 to 4.58 ppb and 93.56 to 146.00 ppb, respectively. An initial ^(187)Os/^(188)Os ratio ranges from 0.86 to 1.23 for the ores and the γOs values from 592 to 2227. Osmium isotopic data suggest that the Tianyu intrusion and associated Cu-Ni mineralization has derived from crustal-contaminated mantle melts. The intrusions early show island-arc geochemical signatures, which indicate that the Hulu mafic–ultramafic intrusions, along with the Cu-Ni deposit, formed as a result of subduction of oceanic crust in the Early Permian.

Magma Replenishment as Revealed by Textural and Geochemical Features of Plagioclase Phenocrysts in Subduction-Related Lavas

Various petrographic features and geochemical characteristics indicative of disequilibrium are preserved in plagioclase phenocrysts from basaltic to andesitic lavas in East Junggar, northwest China. These characteristics indicate that they crystallized in a magma chamber, which was replenished by less differentiated and high-temperature magmas. The petrographic and geochemical features of the plagioclase phenocrysts are interpreted to record responses to changes in temperature, composition and mechanical effect during magma replenishment. Distinct rare earth element(REE) patterns between cores and rims of the same plagioclase crystal suggest derivation from two end-member magmas. From core to rim, plagioclase phenocrysts commonly display sharp fluctuations of anorthite(An) content up to 20, which either correspond to reverse zoning associated with ovoidal cores and resorption surface(PI), or normal zoning with euhedral form and no resorption surface(P2). Plagioclase crystals with diverse textures and remarkably different An content coexist on the scale of a thin-section. Cores of these plagioclases in each sample display a bimodal distribution of An content. From core to rim in PI, concentrations o f FeOT and Sr increase remarkably as An content increases. During magma replenishment, pre-existing plagioclase phenocrysts in the andesitic magma, which were immersed into hotter and less differentiated magmas, were heated and resorbed to form ovoidal cores, and then were overgrown by a thin rim with much higher contents of An, FeO^T and Sr. However, pre-existing plagioclase phenocrysts in the basaltic magma were injected into cooler and more evolved magmas, and were remained as euhedral cores, which were later enclosed by oscillatory zoned rims with much lower contents of An, Sr and Ba.

Zircon U-Pb Ages and Geochemistry of Permo-Carboniferous Mafic Intrusions in the Xilinhot Area, Inner Mongolia: Constraints on the Northward Subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB) resulted from accretion during the Paleozoic subduction of the PaleoAsian Ocean. The Xilinhot area in Inner Mongolia is located in the northern subduction zone of the central-eastern CAOB and outcropped a large number of late Paleozoic mafic intrusions. The characteristics of magma source and tectonic setting of the mafic intrusions and their response to the closure process of the Paleo-Asian Ocean are still controversial. This study presents LA-ICPMS zircon U-Pb ages and geochemical features of mafic intrusions in the Xilinhot area to constrain the northward subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. The mafic intrusions consist of gabbro, hornblende gabbro, and diabase. Their intrusion times can be divided into three stages of 326-321 Ma, 276 Ma and 254 Ma by zircon U-Pb ages. The first two stages of the 326-276 Ma intrusions mostly originated from subduction-modified continental lithospheric mantle sources that underwent a variable degree partial melting(5-30%), recording the subduction of oceanic crust. The third stage of the 254 Ma mafic rocks also show arc-related features. The primary magma compositions calculated by PRIMELT2 modeling on three samples of ~326 Ma and two samples of ~254 Ma show that these mafic samples are characterized by a variable range in SiO2(47.51-51.47 wt%), Al2O3(11.46-15.55 wt%), ΣFeO(8.27-9.61 wt%), MgO(13.01-15.18 wt%) and CaO(9.13-11.67 wt%), consisting with the features between enriched mantle and lower continental crust. The source mantle melting of mafic intrusions occurred under temperatures of 1302-1351°C and pressures of 0.92-1.30 GPa. The magmatic processes occurred near the crust-mantle boundary at about 33-45 km underground. Combined with previous studies, it is concluded that Carboniferous to early Permian(~326-275 Ma) northward subduction of the Paleo-Asian oceanic crust led to the formation of the mafic magmatism in the Baolidao arc zone. Early Carboniferous High Ba-Sr Granitoid in Southern Langshan of Northeastern Alxa: Implications for Accretionary Tectonics along the Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Voluminous granitoids are widely distributed in the Langshan region,northeast of the Alxa block,and record the evolutionary processes of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt.The Dabashan pluton was emplaced into the Paleoproterozoic Diebusige complex.Early Carboniferous zircon LA-ICP MS U-Pb ages were from 327 Ma to 346 Ma.The Dabashan pluton can be classified as monzogranite and syenogranite,and exhibits high K2 O contents and K2 O/Na2 O ratios,which reveal a high-K calc-alkaline nature.The samples display strongly fractionated REE patterns,and are enriched in large ion lithophile elements(LILE)relative to high field strength elements(HFSE).The Dabashan plutons display unusually high Ba(823–2817 ppm)and Sr(166–520 ppm)contents and K/Rb ratios(315–627),but low Rb/Ba ratios(0.02–0.14),and exhibit fertile zircon Hf isotopic compositions[εHf(t)=-14 to-20],which are comparable to those of typical high Ba–Sr granitoids.Based on the geochemical compositions of the samples,we suggest that subducted sediments and ancient crustal materials both played important roles in their generation.Basaltic melts were derived from partial melting of subcontinental lithophile mantle metasomatized by subducted sediment-related melts with residual garnet in the source,which caused partial melting of ancient lower crust.Magmas derived from underplating ascended and emplaced in the middle–upper crust at different depths.The resultant magmas experienced some degree of fractional crystallization during their ascent.Given these geochemical characteristics,together with regional tectonic,magmatic,and structure analysis data,an active continental margin environment is proposed for the generation of these rocks.

The successive I^(–)/I^(0)/I^(+)redox couples in the four-electron zinc-iodine aqueous battery(4eZIB)is plagued by the instability of the electrophilic I~+species,which could either be hydrolyzed or be neutralized by the I_(3)~–redox intermediates.We present an adsorption-catalysis approach that effectively suppresses the hydrolysis of ICl species and also provides an enhanced reaction kinetics to surpass the formation of triiodide ions.We elucidate that the improved stability is attributed to the pronounced orbital hybridization between the d orbitals of Fe-N_4 moieties(atomic Fe supported on nitrogen doped carbon)and the p orbitals of iodine species(I_(2)and ICl).Such d-p orbital hybridization leads to enhanced adsorption for iodine species,increased energy barrier for proton detachment from the ICl.HOH intermediate during hydrolysis,and efficient catalysis of the iodine redox reactions with high conversion efficiency.The proposed 4eZIB demonstrates practical areal capacity(>3 mAh cm^(-2))with a near-unity coulombic efficiency,high energy density of 420 Wh kg^(-1)(based on cathode mass),and long-term stability(over 10,000 cycles).Even at–20℃,the battery exhibits stable performance for over 1000 cycles with high iodine utilization ratio.
