Quantum simulation of particle pair creation near the event horizon

Though it is still a big challenge to unify general relativity and quantum mechanics in modern physics, the theory of quantum field related with the gravitational effect has been well developed and some striking phenomena are predicted, such as Hawking radiation. However, the direct measurement of these quantum effects under general relativity is far beyond present experiment techniques. Fortunately, the emulation of general relativity phenomena in the laboratory has become accessible in recent years. However, up to now,these simulations are limited either in classical regime or in flat space whereas quantum simulation related with general relativity is rarely involved. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a quantum evolution of fermions in close proximity to an artificial black hole on a photonic chip. We successfully observe the acceleration behavior, quantum creation, and evolution of a fermion pair near the event horizon:a single-photon wave packet with positive energy escapes from the black hole while negative energy is captured. Our extensible platform not only provides a route to access quantum effects related with general relativity, but also has the potentiality to investigate quantum gravity in future.

Higher-order topological insulators,as newly found non-trivial materials and structures,possess topological phases beyond the conventional bulk-boundary *** previous studies,in-gap boundary states such as the corner states were regarded as conclusive evidence for the emergence of higher-order topological ***,we present an experimental observation of a photonic higher-order topological insulator with corner states embedded into the bulk spectrum,denoted as the higher-order topological bound states in the ***,we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new way to identify topological corner states by exciting them separately from the bulk states with photonic quantum superposition *** results extend the topological bound states in the continuum into higher-order cases,providing an unprecedented mechanism to achieve robust and localized states in a bulk *** importantly,our experiments exhibit the advantage of using the time evolution of quantum superposition states to identify topological corner modes,which may shed light on future exploration between quantum dynamics and higher-order topological photonics.

High-capacity,long-distance underwater optical communication enables a global scale optical network covering orbit,land,and *** communication using photons as carriers has a high channel capacity;however,the light scattering and absorption of water lead to an inevitable huge channel loss,setting an insurmountable transmission distance for existing underwater optical communication ***,we experimentally demonstrate the photon-inter-correlation optical communication(PICOC)in air-water *** retrieve additional internal correlation resources from the sparse single-photon stream with high *** successfully realize the 105-m-long underwater optical communication against a total loss up to 120.1 d B using only a microwatt *** demonstrated underwater light attenuation is equivalent to the loss of 883-m-long Jerlov type I water,encouraging the practical air-water optical communication to connect deeper underwater worlds.

To realize a large-scale quantum network,both quantum memory and the interference of retrieved indistinguishable photons are essentially required to perform multi-photon synchronization and quantum-interference-mediated entanglement *** progress has been achieved in low-temperature and well-isolated ***,linking independent quantum memories at room temperature remain ***,we present an experimental demonstration of Hong–Ou–Mandel interference between single photons from two independent room-temperature quantum *** manage to simultaneously operate two such quantum memories and individually obtain a memory-built-in quantum correlation of Stokes and anti-Stokes photons by a far-off-resonance Duan–Lukin–Cirac–Zoller *** also successfully enhance the Hong–Ou–Mandel interference rate up to about 15 times by increasing each photon rate,which is achieved by coordinating two quantum memories with a repeat-until-success *** observe the visibility of quantum interference up to 75.0%without reduction of any background noise,well exceeding the classical limit of 50%.Our results,together with its straightforward,broadband,and room-temperature features,open up a promising way towards realizing large-scale quantum networks at ambient conditions.

Quantum computer,harnessing quantum superposition to boost a parallel computational power,promises to outperform its classical counterparts and offer an exponentially increased *** term“quantum advantage”was proposed to mark the key point when peo-ple can solve a classically intractable problem by artificially control-ling a quantum system in an unprecedented scale,even without er-ror correction or known practical *** sampling,a problem about quantum evolutions of multi-photons on multimode photonic networks,as well as its variants,has been considered as a promising candidate to reach this ***,the current photonic platforms suffer from the scaling problems,both in pho-ton numbers and circuit ***,we propose a new variant of the problem,membosonsampling,exploiting the scaling of the prob-lem can be in principle extended to a large *** experimentally verify the scheme on a self-looped photonic chip inspired by mem-ristor,and obtain multi-photon registrations up to 56-fold in 750,000 modes with a Hilbert space up to *** results exhibit an inte-grated and cost-efficient shortcut stepping into the“quantum advan-tage”regimeina photonic systemfarbeyondpreviousscenarios,and provide a scalable and controllable platform for quantum information processing.

Google Page Rank is a prevalent algorithm for ranking the significance of nodes or websites in a network,and a recent quantum counterpart for Page Rank algorithm has been raised to suggest a higher accuracy of ranking comparing to Google Page *** quantum Page Rank algorithm is essentially based on quantum stochastic walks and can be expressed using Lindblad master equation,which,however,needs to solve the Kronecker products of an O(N^(4))dimension and requires severely large memory and time when the number of nodes N in a network increases above ***,we present an efficient solver for quantum Page Rank by using the Runge-Kutta method to reduce the matrix dimension to O(N^(2))and employing Tensor Flow to conduct GPU parallel *** demonstrate its performance in solving quantum stochastic walks on Erdos-Rényi graphs using an RTX 2060 *** test on the graph of 6000 nodes requires a memory of 5.5 GB and time of 223 s,and that on the graph of 1000 nodes requires 226 MB and 3.6 *** with QSWalk,a currently prevalent Mathematica solver,our solver for the same graph of 1000 nodes reduces the required memory and time to only 0.2%and 0.05%.We apply the solver to quantum Page Rank for the USA major airline network with up to 922 nodes,and to quantum stochastic walk on a glued tree of 2186 *** efficient solver for large-scale quantum Page Rank and quantum stochastic walks would greatly facilitate studies of quantum information in real-life applications.
