This paper celebrates Professor Yongqi GAO's significant achievement in the field of interdisciplinary studies within the context of his final research project Arctic Climate Predictions: Pathways to Resilient Sustainable Societies-ARCPATH(https://***/en/projects/finished-projects/arcpath). The disciplines represented in the project are related to climatology, anthropology, marine biology, economics, and the broad spectrum of social-ecological studies. Team members were drawn from the Nordic countries, Russia, China, the United States, and Canada. The project was transdisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary as it included collaboration with local knowledge holders. ARCPATH made significant contributions to Arctic research through an improved understanding of the mechanisms that drive climate variability in the Arctic. In tandem with this research, a combination of historical investigations and social, economic, and marine biological fieldwork was carried out for the project study areas of Iceland, Greenland, Norway, and the surrounding seas, with a focus on the joint use of ocean and sea-ice data as well as social-ecological drivers. ARCPATH was able to provide an improved framework for predicting the near-term variation of Arctic climate on spatial scales relevant to society, as well as evaluating possible related changes in socioeconomic realms. In summary, through the integration of information from several different disciplines and research approaches, ARCPATH served to create new and valuable knowledge on crucial issues, thus providing new pathways to action for Arctic communities.

Cancer statistics for young adults aged 20 to 49 years in China from 2000 to 2017:a population-based registry study

An increasing cancer incidence among adults younger than 50 years has been reported for several types of cancer in multiple *** aimed to report cancer profiles and trends among young adults in *** from the China Cancer Registry Annual Report were used to estimate incidence and mortality among young adults(ages 20–49 years)in China in 2017,and an age-period-cohort model was employed to estimate the average annual percent change(AAPC)in incidence and mortality from 2000 to *** 25 cancer types were grouped into obesity-or overweight-associated cancers(12 cancer types)and additional cancers(13 cancer types).In 2017,there were 681,178new cases and 214,591 cancer deaths among young adults in *** young adults,the most common cancers were thyroid,breast,cervical,liver,lung,and colorectal cancer,and the leading causes of cancer deaths were liver,lung,cervical,stomach,breast,and colorectal *** 2000 to 2017,the cancer incidence increased for all cancers combined among young adults,with the highest AAPC(1.46%)for adults aged 20–24 years,while cancer mortality decreased,with the highest AAPC(-1.63%)for those aged 35–39 *** conclusion,the cancer incidence in China has increased among young adults,while cancer mortality has decreased for nearly all *** control measures,such as obesity control and appropriate screening,may contribute to reducing the increasing cancer burden among young adults.

Night warming increases wheat yield by improving pre-anthesis plant growth and post-anthesis grain starch biosynthesis

Global climate change is characterized by asymmetric warming,i.e.,greater temperature increases in winter,spring,and nighttime than in summer,autumn,and *** experiments were conducted using four wheat cultivars,namely‘Yangmai 18’(YM18),‘Sumai 188’(SM188),‘Yannong 19’(YN19),and‘Annong 0711’(AN0711),in the two growing seasons of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021,with passive night warming during different periods in the early growth *** treatments were night warming during the tillering-jointing(NW_(T-j)),jointing-booting(NWj-B),and booting-anthesis(NWB-A)stages,with ambient temperature(NN)as the *** effects of night warming during different stages on wheat yield formation were investigated by determining the characteristics of dry matter accumulation and translocation,as well as sucrose and starch accumulation in wheat *** wheat yields of all four cultivars were significantly higher in NW_(T-j)than in NN in the 2-year *** yield increases of semi-winter cultivars YN19 and AN0711 were greater than those of spring cultivars YM18 and *** NW_(T-j)increased wheat yield mainly by increasing the 1,000-grain weight and the number of fertile spikelets,and it increased dry matter accumulation in various organs of wheat at the anthesis and maturity stages by increasing the growth rate at the vegetative growth *** flag leaf and spike showed the largest increases in dry matter ***_(T-j)also increased the grain sucrose and starch contents in the early and middle grain-filling stages,promoting yield ***,night warming between the tillering and jointing stages increased the pre-anthesis growth rate,and thus,wheat dry matter production,which contributed to an increase in wheat yield.

A set of novel red phosphors Li_(8)CaLa_(2)Ta_(2)O_(13):Eu^(3+)(LCLTO:xEu^(3+))were successfully prepared using a solid-state reaction *** properties of the prepared samples,including phase purity,elemental composition,and morphology,were systematically investigated using x-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy *** 610 nm maximum emission peak is attributed to the^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(2)transition of Eu^(3+)ion under 394 nm *** all the LCLTO:xEu^(3+)phosphors,LCLTO:0.6Eu^(3+)showed the strongest emission intensity because of the concentration quenching effect of the electric dipole-dipole in-teraction among the Eu^(3+)ions,which was also demonstrated by the decay ***,the emission intensity of the optimal LCLTO:0.6Eu^(3+)phosphor,which exhibited a high internal quantum efficiency of 49.30%and excellent color purity of 96.79%,was approximately 2.29 times higher than that of commercial Y203:Eu^(3+)red *** thermal stability of the LCLTO:0.6Eu^(3+)sample with good color stability was meticulously *** fabricated white-light-emitting diode(WLED)exhibited a superior color-rendering index of Ra=82 and chromaticity coordinates of(0.3260,0.3639),suggesting that LCLTO:0.6Eu^(3+)has potential applicability in developing efficient and high-quality ***,the prepared LCLTO:0.6Eu^(3+)/PDMS composite film demonstrated exceptional flexural resistance and chemical stability,indicating considerable promise for practical anti-counterfeitingapplications.

ADAM8 has been identified as the fibronectin-cleaving enzyme in human degenerative intervertebral disc(IVD)tissues.^(1)Increase of the active form of ADAM8 and its cleavage product,fibronectin fragment,correlated with an increased degree of IVD degeneration.1 Furthermore,fibronectin fragments have been shown to accelerate the progression of IVD degeneration.^(2)These findings suggest that ADAM8 may play a role in degenerative disc disease,a clinical problem with tremendous socioeconomic burdens in the United States.

Carrimycin ameliorates lipopolysaccharide and cecal ligation and puncture-induced sepsis in mice

Carrimycin(CA),sanctioned by China’s National Medical Products Administration(NMPA)in 2019 for treating acute bronchitis and sinusitis,has recently been observed to exhibit multifaceted biological activities,encompassing anti-inflammatory,antiviral,and anti-tumor *** these applications,its efficacy in sepsis treatment remains *** study introduces a novel function of CA,demonstrating its capacity to mitigate sepsis induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS)and cecal ligation and puncture(CLP)in mice *** research employed in vitro assays,real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR),and RNA-seq analysis to establish that CA significantly reduces the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines,namely tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),interleukin 1 beta(IL-1β),and interleukin 6(IL-6),in response to LPS ***,Western blotting and immunofluorescence assays revealed that CA impedes Nuclear Factor Kappa B(NF-κB)activation in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 *** these findings,in vivo experiments demonstrated that CA effectively alleviates LPS-and CLP-triggered organ inflammation in C57BL/6 *** insights were gained through 16S sequencing,highlighting CA’s pivotal role in enhancing gut microbiota diversity and modulating metabolic pathways,particularly by augmenting the production of short-chain fatty acids in mice subjected to ***,a comparative analysis revealed that CA’s anti-inflammatory efficacy surpasses that of equivalent doses of aspirin(ASP)and ***,these findings suggest that CA exhibits significant therapeutic potential in sepsis *** discovery provides a foundational theoretical basis for the clinical application of CA in sepsis management.

Prevention of urinary tract infection using a silver alloy hydrogel-coated catheter in critically ill patients: A single-center prospective randomized controlled study

Background:A new type of silver alloy hydrogel-coated(SAH)catheter has been shown to prevent bacterial adhesion and colonization by generating a microcurrent,and to block the retrograde infection ***,these have only been confirmed in ordinary *** study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a SAH catheter for preventing urinary tract infections in critically ill ***:This was a prospective single-center,single-blind,randomized,controlled study.A total of 132 patients requiring indwelling catheterization in the intensive care unit(ICU)of the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China between October 2022 and February 2023 and who met the study inclusion/exclusion criteria were randomly divided into two *** in the SAH catheter group received a SAH catheter,while patients in the conventional catheter group received a conventional siliconized latex Foley *** main outcome measure was the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections(CAUTIs).Secondary outcome indicators included urine positivity for white blood cells and positive urine cultures on 3 days,7 days,10 days,and 14 days after catheterization,number of viable bacteria in the catheter biofilm on day 14,pathogenic characteristics of positive urine cultures,length of ICU stay,overall hospital stay,ICU mortality,and 28-day *** the data were compared between the two ***:A total of 68 patients in the conventional catheter group and 64 patients in the SAH catheter group were included in the *** day 7 after catheter placement,the positivity rate for urinary white blood cells was significantly higher in the conventional catheter group than in the SAH catheter group(33.8%vs.15.6%,P=0.016).On day 10,the rates of positive urine cultures(27.9%vs.10.9%,P=0.014)and CAUTIs(22.1%vs.7.8%,P=0.023)were significantly higher in the conventional catheter group than in the SAH catheter *** day 14,the numb
