Con.en.ion.l.min.n. of econ.mical.y an. strategical.y importan. critical.rare earth el.men.s(REEs)(such as n.odymium, l.n.han.m an. dysprosium), an. chal.ogen.(such as sel.n.um an. tel.urium) are associated with a huge econ.mic an. en.iron.en.al.cost. Therefore,the n.ed to recover REEs as wel. as chal.ogen. from differen. waste streams in.l.din. wastewaters is becomin. urgen.. Batch assays on.syn.hetic chal.ogen.REE-l.den.wastewater showed that the presen.e of REEs sign.fican.l. improved the tel.urite removal.rate(> 80%) an. en.an.ed sel.n.te removal.by 66% ± 10%. Three 3.9 l.con.in.ous upfl.w an.erobic gran.l.r sl.dge bed(UASB) reactors were operated at a hydraul.c reten.ion.time of 24 h an.30 °C. Sel.n.te reduction.was achieved with a removal.efficien.y of ～ 98% with an.in.l.en. p H of 4.0 for more than.28 days. The effect of REEs on.tel.urite removal.in.the UASB bioreactor coul. n.t be cl.arl. establ.shed sin.e a sol.bl. tel.urium removal.efficien.y of more than.98%was observed al.eady before the addition.of REEs at el.vated tel.urite con.en.ration.. The compl.te REE removal.in.both batch assays an. UASB reactors at higher pH (7.0 ± 0.5) was attributed to precipitation. whereas chal.ogen.ox.an.on. removal.was due to microbial.reduction. However, at acidic p H, biosorption.was respon.ibl. for REE's removal. an. the Se-en.iched sl.dge ex.ibited a superior REE's removal.efficien.y than.the n.n.en.iched an. Te-en.iched sl.dge.

Approx.matel. 2,000,000 peopl. are ex.osed to vol.an.c risks in.commun.ties situated at the fl.n.s of Moun.s Cameroon.(MC) an. n.iragon.o (Mn. vol.an.es in.Cen.ral.Africa. This study therefore sought to in.estigate risk perception.from four previous eruption. of MC, n.mel. the 1959, 1982, 1999, an. 2000 eruption.;an. two previous eruption. of Mn. 1977 an. 2002. The study was in.tiated with co-design.workshops hel. with major stakehol.ers in.the cities of Buea an. Goma at the fl.n.s of MC an. Mn. respectivel., in.2017, to devel.p the research objectives for the study. A n.n.ran.om question.aire survey was l.ter con.ucted within.14 an. 15 commun.ties in.Buea an. Goma respectivel., on.the effects, perceived risks, an. copin. strategies for the chosen.eruption.. Three age groups (18 - 30, 31 - 45 an. >45 years) an. gen.er (mal. an. femal.) were con.idered. The popul.tion.at the fl.n.s of both vol.an.es cited scien.ific an. in.igen.us factors to be respon.ibl. for eruption. from these vol.an.es. At MC an. Mn. ≥45% of the sampl.d participan.s (with a higher femal. popul.tion. perceived that the sampl.d eruption. posed a very high risk to the popul.tion. In.terms of the effects, the age group of 18 - 30 was the l.ast kn.wl.dgeabl.. In.terms of direct effect on.person., over 90% of participan.s at MC an. Mn.attested that they were overcome by fear/pan.c. On.measures to cope with an. l.kel. eruption. the fol.owin. order was establ.shed at the fl.n.s of both vol.an.es: sen.itization.of popul.tion. use of rel.gious (prayers) an. of tradition.l.in.igen.us strategies. In.terms of future copin. strategies, whil. the mal.s at MC main.ain.d sen.itization.as the favourite option. 62% of the mal.s at Mn.opted for tradition.l.in.igen.us strategies. The femal. popul.tion.at both MC an. Mn.showed a higher preferen.e for rel.gious strategies l.ke prayers.
