Laser direct-writing enables micro and nanoscale patterning,and is thus widely used for cutting-edge research and industrial *** nanolithography methods,such as near-field,plasmonic,and scanning-probe lithography,are gaining increasing attention because they enable fabrication of high-resolution nanopatterns that are much smaller than the wavelength of ***,conventional methods are limited by low throughput and scalability,and tend to use electron beams or focused-ion beams to create *** this study,we developed a procedure for massively parallel direct writing of nanoapertures using a multi-optical probe system and superresolution near-fields.A glass micro-Fresnel zone plate array,which is an ultra-precision far-field optical system,was designed and fabricated as the multi-optical probe *** a chalcogenide phase-change material(PCM),multiple layers of Sb_(65)Se_(35) were used to generate the super-resolution near-field effect.A nanoaperture was fabricated through direct laser writing on a large-area(200×200mm^(2))multi-layered PCM.A photoresist nanopattern was fabricated on an 8-inch wafer via near-field nanolithography using the developed nanoaperture and an i-line commercial exposure *** other methods,this technique allows high-throughput large-area nanolithography and overcomes the gap-control issue between the probe array and the patterning surface.

On Rayleigh expansion for nonlinear long water waves

We consider strongly nonlinear long waves on the surface of a homogeneous fluid *** modifying the formulation for the high-order spectral(HOS)method for waves in water of finite depth,we present a higher-order nonlinear system for the surface elevation and the velocity potential on the free surface to describe the two-dimensional evolution of large amplitude long *** is shown that the resulting system preserves the Hamiltonian structure of the Euler equations and can be transformed to the strongly nonlinear long-wave model for the depth-averaged *** to truncation of the linear dispersion relation for water waves,both the system for the surface velocity potential and that for the depth-averaged velocity are ill-posed when the order of approximation is odd and even,*** avoid this ill-posedness,fully dispersive models are also *** the same order approximation,the long-wave model is found more effective for numeral studies of large amplitude long waves than the finite-depth model.

Prediction of Essential Proteins Using Topological Properties in GO-Pruned PPI Network Based on Machine Learning Methods

The prediction of essential proteins, the minimal set required for a living cell to support cellular life, is an important task to understand the cellular processes of an organism. Fast progress in high-throughput technologies and the production of large amounts of data enable the discovery of essential proteins at the system level by analyzing Protein-Protein Interaction （PPI） networks, and replacing biological or chemical experiments. Furthermore, additional gene-level annotation information, such as Gene Ontology （GO） terms, helps to detect essential proteins with higher accuracy. Various centrality algorithms have been used to determine essential proteins in a PPI network, and, recently motif centrality GO, which is based on network motifs and GO terms, works best in detecting essential proteins in a Baker＇s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae PPI network, compared to other centrality algorithms. However, each centrality algorithm contributes to the detection of essential proteins with different properties, which makes the integration of them a logical next step. In this paper, we construct a new feature space, named CENT-ING-GO consisting of various centrality measures and GO terms, and provide a computational approach to predict essential proteins with various machine learning techniques. The experimental results show that CENT-ING-GO feature space improves performance over the INT-GO feature space in previous work by Acencio and Lemke in 2009. We also demonstrate that pruning a PPI with informative GO terms can improve the prediction performance further.

Network Motif Detection: Algorithms, Parallel and Cloud Computing,and Related Tools

Network motif is defined as a frequent and unique subgraph pattern in a network, and the search involves counting all the possible instances or listing all patterns, testing isomorphism known as NP-hard and large amounts of repeated processes for statistical evaluation. Although many efficient algorithms have been introduced, exhaustive search methods are still infeasible and feasible approximation methods are yet ***, the fast and continual growth of biological networks makes the problem more challenging. As a consequence, parallel algorithms have been developed and distributed computing has been tested in the cloud computing environment as well. In this paper, we survey current algorithms for network motif detection and existing software tools. Then, we show that some methods have been utilized for parallel network motif search algorithms with static or dynamic load balancing techniques. With the advent of cloud computing services, network motif search has been implemented with MapReduce in Hadoop Distributed File System（HDFS）, and with Storm, but without statistical testing. In this paper, we survey network motif search algorithms in general, including existing parallel methods as well as cloud computing based search, and show the promising potentials for the cloud computing based motif search methods.

A new database of building-space-specific internal loads and load schedules for performance based code compliance modeling of commercial buildings

Building-level loads and load schedules prescribed by current modeling rules save modelers time and provide standards during whole building performance ***,recent studies show that they sometimes insufficiently capture the entire building performance due to the varied loads and load schedules for different space *** a solution to this issue,this paper presents a database of default building-space-specific loads and load schedules for use in energy modeling,and in particular code compliance modeling for commercial *** existing sets of default loads and load schedules are reviewed and the challenges behind using them for specific research topics are ***,the proposed method to develop the building-space-specific loads and load schedules is *** that,the database for these building-space-specific loads and load schedules is *** addition,one case is studied to demonstrate the applications of these loads and load *** this case study,three methods are used to develop building energy models:space-specific(using knowledge of the distribution and location of space types and applying the space-specific data in the developed database),building-level(assuming a lack of knowledge of the space types and using the building-level data in the developed database),and calculated-ratio(assuming knowledge of the distribution of space types but not their locations and calculating weighted average values based on the space-specific data in the developed database).The energy results simulated by using these three methods are compared,which shows building-level methods can produce significantly different absolute energy and energy savings results than the results using space-specific ***,this paper discusses the application scope and maintenance of this new database.

Tribological properties of multilayer tetrahedral amorphous carbon coatings deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon(ta‐C)has emerged as an excellent coating material for improving the reliability of application components under high normal ***,we present the results of our investigations regarding the mechanical and tribological properties of a 2‐μm‐thick multilayer ta‐C coating on high‐speed steel *** composed of alternating soft and hard layers are fabricated using filtered a cathodic vacuum arc with alternating substrate bias voltages(0 and 100 V or 0 and 150 V).The thickness ratio is discovered to be 1:3 for the sp2‐rich and sp3‐rich *** results show that the hardness and elastic modulus of the multilayer ta‐C coatings increase with the sp3 content of the hard *** hardness reached approximately 37 GPa,whereas an improved toughness and a higher adhesion strength(>29 N)are *** friction performance(μ=0.07)of the multilayer coating is similar to that of the single layer ta‐C thick coating,but the wear rate(0.13×10^(–6) mm^(3)/(N∙m))improved under a high load of 30 *** further demonstrate the importance of the multilayer structure in suppressing crack propagation and increasing the resistance to plastic deformation(H3/E2)ratio.

Guaranteeing almost fault-free tracking performance from transient to steady-state:a disturbance observer approach

In this paper, we propose an output-feedback fault-tolerant controller(FTC) for a class of uncertain multi-input single-output systems under float and lock-in-place actuator faults. Of particular interest is to recover a fault-free tracking performance of a(pre-defined) nominal closed-loop system, during the entire time period including the transients due to abrupt actuator faults. As a key component, a highgain disturbance observer(DOB) is employed to rapidly compensate the lumped disturbance, a compressed expression of all the effect of actuator faults(as well as model uncertainty and disturbance) on the *** implement this high-gain approach, a fixed control allocation(CA) law is presented in order to keep an extended system with a virtual scalar input to remain of minimum phase under any patterns of faults. It is shown via the singular perturbation theory that the proposed FTC, consisting of the high-gain DOB and the CA law, resolves the problem in an approximate but arbitrarily accurate sense. Simulations with the linearized lateral model of Boeing 747 are performed to verify the validity of the proposed FTC scheme.

Overlooked impact of precursor mixing:Implications in the electrochemical performance of battery electrode materials

Solid-state reactions are an essential part of the synthesis of various cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).Despite the simplicity and effectiveness for mass production,a subtle variation in synthesis conditions can often give rise to unexpectedly different physical properties,significantly affecting the electrochemical performance of electrode ***,this aspect has long been overlooked in the LIB community,which should focus on advancement in understanding the influence of synthesis *** solid-state reactions occur only at the interface of precursor materials,maximizing the interfacial contact area between mixed precursor powders is *** milling and/or mixing are common practices that have been performed in both academia and industry for this *** the common belief that this pre-treatment before calcination would be of great benefit for the preparation of high-performance LIB materials,we revealed in this work that this practice is not always successful for this *** our case study of the preparation of LiCoO_(2),we demonstrated that mechanical mixing-a routinely implemented process for homogeneous mixing of precursors-can be harmful if it is performed without assuring optimal working conditions for *** underlying reasons for this surprising result are elucidated in this work,and we hope that this new insight can help avoid the potential pitfall of routine implementations performed for LIB materials.

Acceleration Workspace of Cooperating Multi-Finger Robot Systems

We present a mathematical method for acceleration workspace analysis of cooperating multi-finger robot systems using a model of point-contact with friction. A new unified formulation from dynamic equations of cooperating multi-finger robots is derived considering the force and acceleration relationships between the fingers and the object to be handled. From the dynamic equation, maximum translational and rotational acceleration bounds of an object are calculated under given constraints of contact conditions, configurations of fingers, and bounds on the torques of joint actuators for each finger. Here, the rotational acceleration bounds can be applied as an important manipulability index when the multi-finger robot grasps an object. To verify the proposed method, we used a set of case studies with a simple multi-finger mechanism system. The achievable acceleration boundary in task space can be obtained successfully with the proposed method and the acceleration boundary depends on the configurations of fingers.
