Technical Note on a Track-pattern-based Model for Predicting Seasonal Tropical Cyclone Activity over the Western North Pacific

Recently, the National Typhoon Center （NTC） at the Korea Meteorological Administration launched a track-pattern-based model that predicts the horizontal distribution of tropical cyclone （TC） track density from June to October. This model is the first approach to target seasonal TC track clusters covering the entire western North Pacific （WNP） basin, and may represent a milestone for seasonal TC forecasting, using a simple statistical method that can be applied at weather operation centers. In this note, we describe the procedure of the track-pattern-based model with brief technical background to provide practical information on the use and operation of the model. The model comprises three major steps. First, long-term data of WNP TC tracks reveal seven climatological track clusters. Second, the TC counts for each cluster are predicted using a hybrid statistical-dynamical method, using the seasonal prediction of large-scale environments. Third, the final forecast map of track density is constructed by merging the spatial probabilities of the seven clusters and applying necessary bias corrections. Although the model is developed to issue the seasonal forecast in mid-May, it can be applied to alternative dates and target seasons following the procedure described in this note. Work continues on establishing an automatic system for this model at the NTC.

Beta-nerve growth factor gene therapy alleviates pyridoxine-induced neuropathic damage by increasing doublecortin and tyrosine kinase A in the dorsal root ganglion

Beta-nerve growth factor(β-NGF) is known to be a major leading cause of neuronal plasticity. To identify the possible action mechanisms of β-NGF gene therapy for sciatic nerve recovery, experimental dogs were randomly divided into control, pyridoxine, and pyridoxine + β-NGF groups. We observed chronological changes of morphology in the dorsal root ganglia in response to pyridoxine toxicity based on cresyl violet staining. The number of large neurons positive for cresyl violet was dramatically decreased after pyridoxine intoxication for 7 days in the dorsal root ganglia and the neuron number was gradually increased after pyridoxine withdrawal. In addition, we also investigated the effects of β-NGF gene therapy on neuronal plasticity in pyridoxine-induced neuropathic dogs. To accomplish this, tyrosine kinase receptor A(TrkA), βIII-tubulin and doublecortin(DCX) immunohistochemical staining was performed at 3 days after the last pyridoxine treatment. TrkA-immunoreactive neurons were dramatically decreased in the pyridoxine group compared to the control group, but strong TrkA immunoreactivity was observed in the small-sized dorsal root ganglia in this group. TrkA immunoreactivity in the dorsal root ganglia was similar between β-NGF and control groups. The numbers of βIII-tubulin-and DCX-immunoreactive cells decreased significantly in the pyridoxine group compared to the control group. However, the reduction of βIII-tubulin-and DCX-immunoreactive cells in the dorsal root ganglia in the β-NGF group was significantly ameliorated than that in the pyridoxine group. These results indicate that β-NGF gene therapy is a powerful treatment of pyridoxine-induced neuropathic damage by increasing the TrkA and DCX levels in the dorsal root ganglia. The experimental protocol was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC) of Seoul National University, South Korea(approval No. SNU-060623-1, SNU-091009-1) on June 23, 2006 and October 9, 2009, respectively.

Kinetic study on catalytic gasification of a modified sludge fuel

A new type of mixture fuel, sludge–oil–coal agglomerate (SOCA), was catalytically gasified with steam in a thermobalance reactor under atmospheric pressure. All the four catalysts studied (K2CO3, CaO, NiO and Fe2O3) were found capable of enhancing the steam gasification rate and significantly increasing the conversion of carbon. The ranking of catalytic activity was found to be K2CO3 CaO > NiO > Fe2O3. A modified volumetric-reaction model in the literature was used to describe the conversion behavior of the steam gasification studied by evaluating the kinetic parameters. Expressions of the apparent gasification rates for SOCA were presented for the design of catalytic gasification processes.

Acupuncture for Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective：To assess the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment option for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder（ADHD）.Methods：The literatures were searched using 15 databases,including MEDLINE, AMED,CINAHL,EMBASE,Psyclnfo,the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews,six Korean medical databases and two Chinese databases without language *** controlled clinical studies of any type of acupuncture therapy for ADHD autistic patients were *** in which acupuncture was part of a complex intervention were also *** articles were read by two independent reviewers,who extracted data from the articles according to predefined criteria. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias ***：Of 114 articles,only three randomized clinical trials（RCTs） met our inclusion *** RCT found that electroacupuncture（EA） plus behavioural treatment was superior to sham EA plus behavioural *** RCTs reported a significant benefit of acupuncture or auricular acupuncture over conventional drug ***：Limited evidence exists for the effectiveness of acupuncture as a symptomatic treatment of *** that the risk of bias of the included studies was high,firm conclusions cannot be drawn.

Thermal Degradation Kinetics of iPP/Pd Nanocomposite Prepared by a Drying Process

Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were incorporated into isotactic polypropylene (iPP) film by a one-step dry process. iPP film was exposed to the sublimed Pd(acac)2 vapor in a glass vessel at 180oC. The Pd nanoparticles were observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), and it was found that metallic nanoparticles were selectively loaded on the amorphous regions between the lamellae in iPP. Thermal degradation kinetics was investigated by introducing the data of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to Flynn & Wall equation. TGA data showed that thermal degradation temperature (Td) of the neat iPP was improved about 35oC by loading 0.27 wt% Pd nanoparticles. Thermal degradation activation energy (Ed) for iPP/Pd nanocomposite was 227.85 kJ/mol while that of neat iPP was 220.57 kJ/mol. These results meant that the Pd nanoparticles acted as a retardant in the thermal degradation of neat iPP polymer chain.
