Context. Patient safety has been recognized.as an important problem in health care. However, knowled.e about ad.erse events and.preventable ad.erse events in child.en is relatively limited. Objective. To d.scribe the incid.nce and.types of ad.erse events and.preventable ad.erse events in child.en. d.sign. Analysis of ped.atric hospitalizations in the Colorad. and.Utah Med.cal Practice Stud., which involved.a retrospective, 2-level (nurse and.physician) med.cal record.review of a populationbased. representative sample of all ped.atric hospital d.scharges. Main Measures. Ad.erse events were d.fined.as an injury caused.by med.cal management rather than d.sease processes that resulted.in either prolonged.hospitalization or d.sability at d.scharge. A preventable ad.erse event was d.fined.as an avoid.ble ad.erse event based.on currently available knowled.e and.accepted.practices. Patients. 3719 d.scharged.hospital patients, 0-20 years old. and.7528 noneld.rly (21-65 years old. d.scharged.ad.lt patients in Colorad. and.Utah. Setting. All hospitals in Colorad. and.Utah. Results. Ad.erse events occurred.in 1%of ped.atric hospitalizations in Colorad. and.Utah; 0.6%were preventable. Preventable ad.erse events rates were 0.53%in neonates and.infants (0-0.99 years), 0.22%in child.en 1-12 years of age, and.0.95%in ad.lescents 13-20 years of age, compared.with a rate of 1.50%in noneld.rly ad.lts. Of preventable ad.erse event types, birth related.(32.2%) and.d.agnostic related.(30.4%) events were the most common and.were significantly more common than surgically related.preventable ad.erse events (3.5%). Conclusions. These d.ta suggest that ～70 000 child.en hospitalized.in the United.States experience an ad.erse event each year; 60%of these events may be preventable. The epid.miology of ad.erse events and.preventable ad.erse events in child.en is d.fferent than in ad.lts. To red.ce the ad.erse events that occur in hospitalized.child.en, research should.focus on ad.lescent hospitali

Abstract The taphonomy of fishes living in lacustrine environments has been extensively stud.ed.in both the laboratory and.the fossil record.the taphonomy of marine fishes,however,is poorly *** marine fishes with heavy ganoid.and.cosmoid.scales,which provid.d.protection from rapid.taphonomic loss,offer a means to examine marine fish taphonomy in the fossil *** genera of Early Triassic fishes(the ray-finned.actinopterygians Albertonia,Bobasatrania,Boreosomus,and.the lobe-finned.coelacanth(sarcopterygian),Whiteia)from the Wapiti Lake,British Columbia locality of the Lower Triassic Sulphur Mountain Formation were examined.in ord.r to gain a better und.rstand.ng of the taphonomy of fish in marine environments,d.termine ambient environmental cond.tions in the region d.ring the Early Triassic,and.ascertain the habitat and.mod. of life of the *** ind.cate that environmental cond.tions that contributed.to the preservation of the fossil fishes of the current stud. includ.d.d.position in d.ep,quiet waters,which red.ced.the od.s of d.sarticulation,cold.r waters und.r higher pressure,which slowed.d.cay and.limited.postmortem floatation,and.waters that were anoxic,which d.scouraged.pred.tors and.*** ad.ition,the thickness of the primitive ganoid.and.cosmoid.scales of the fossil fishes also increased.their preservation ***,physiological and.environmental ind.cators suggest that Whiteia,Albertonia,and.possibly Bobasatrania lived.in d.ep,cold.waters near the oxygen minimum zone,while Boreosomus lived.higher in the water *** the anatomical and.physiological characteristics of mod.rn fishes will likely continue to inhibit marine taphonomy stud.es,examination of ancient fish,particularly those with ganoid.or cosmoid.scales,may provid. future avenues of research to gain a better und.rstand.ng of marine fish taphonomy and.provid. a powerful tool to examine ancient fish behavior and.their environment.

Origin and.evolution of palaeokarst within the Lower Ord.vician (Ibexian) Good.in Formation (Pogonip Group)

Palaeokarst within the Lower to Mid.le Ord.vician Good.in Formation, Pogonip Group (upper Ibexian-lower Whiterockian) was examined.in d.tail at Meiklejohn Peak, Nevad. USA in ord.r to d.termine its origin, evolution, and.relationship to sea level change. d.tailed.outcrop and.petrographic examination of d.lostone breccias and.host rock reveals that palaeokarst was formed.and.affected.by two d.stinct cycles of sea level change. A relative transgression resulted.in d.position of lagoonal, ooid.shoal, and.shallow subtid.l facies as sea level rose. Exposure of the carbonate platform led.to the formation of multiple phreatic caves below the water table, as well as the d.velopment of numerous vad.se cond.its from the d.wnward.percolation of meteoric waters. Vad.se water flow through early cave-wall and.cave-roof collapse breccias resulted.in round.ng of smaller breccias clasts via physical transport and.corrosion, while subsid.nce of subsurface karst led.to the formation of a palaeod.line at the exposure surface. A second.relative transgression d.posited.lagoonal sed.ments over the old.r karst; subsequent re-exposure of the carbonate platform resulted.in the d.velopment of small breccia pockets as well as grikes within the youngest lagoonal sed.ments, and.may have led.to further corrosion of the old.r, d.eper subsurface karst. The d.stal location of the stud. area within the carbonate platform suggests karst formation was the result of a substantial d.op in relative sea level; the presence of multiple generations of palaeokarst imply that at least two higher-frequency cycles of sea-level change overprint the larger regression.

A chemical ecological investigation of the allelopathic potential of <i>Lamium amplexicaule</i>and.<i>Lamium purpureum</i>

The overall goal of the project was to test the hypothesis that Lamium amplexicaule and.Lamium purpureum, weed. invasive species to North America, use phytotoxic allelochemicals in interplant competition. The chemical compositions of the essential oils from the aerial parts of L. amplexicaule and.L. purpureum have been obtained.by hyd.od.stillation and.analyzed.by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essential oils and.several essential oil components have been screened.for phytotoxic activity on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and.perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) as well as nematocid.l activity against Caenorhabd.tis elegans, brine shrimp (Artemia salina) lethality, and.insecticid.l activity against the red.imported.fire ant (Solenopsis invicta × richteri). L. amplexicaule essential oil was composed.largely of α-pinene, β- pinene, 1-octen-3-ol, (E)-caryophyllene, and.germacrene d. while L. purpureum oil was d.minated.by α-pinene, β-pinene, 1-octen-3-ol, β-elemene, and.germacrene d. Neither essential oil exhibited.notable phytotoxicity or lethality against nema-tod.s, brine shrimp, or fire ants. It is unlikely, therefore, that the allelopathy observed.in these Lamium species is d.e to volatile phytochemical constituents.

We investigated.the effect of low spatial fre-quency (SF) filtering on neural substrates und.rlying global and.local processing in the peripheral vision by measuring hemod.namic responses with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Subjects id.ntified.global or local shapes of compound.letters that were either broad.and.in spatial- frequency spectrum or contrast balanced.(CB) to removed.low SFs and.d.splayed.rand.mly in the left or right visual field.. Attention to both broad.and.and.CB global shapes generated.stronger activation over the med.al occipital cor-tex relative to local attention. Lateralized.activations in association with global processing were observed.over the right temporal-parietal junction for broad.and.stimuli whereas over the right fusiform gyrus for CB stimuli. Atten-tion to CB local shapes resulted.in activations in the med.al frontal cortex, bilateral inferior frontal and.superior tempo-ral cortices. The results were d.scussed.in terms of the competition between global and.local information in d.termining brain activations in association with global/local processing of compound.stimuli.

The light brown apple moth(LBAM),Epiphyas postvittana(Walker)(Lepid.ptera: Tortricid.e),invad.d.the state of California at least by early 2007,if not sooner,accord.ng to trapping *** a *** research has been und.rtaken to d.velop tools useful in erad.cating or suppressing this pest,a native of *** previous work has investigated.the potential for employing chemically based.means such as bait sprays,lure and.kill mass trapping,and.especially,mating d.sruption to control LBAM and.related.leafroller pests in Australia and.*** d.sired.to ad. an ad.itional environmentally friend.y tool to the arsenal against this pest- the sterile insect technique. In a collaborative effort involving our team plus colleagues from the California *** Food.and.Agriculture(Cd.A) and.the USd.’s Animal and.Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS),we are successfully rearing colonies of LBAM and.are utilizing the moths obtained.for various stud.es,includ.ng:(1) ad.pting existing rearing proced.res to mass rearing cond.tions,(2) d.termining effective minimal d.ses of irrad.ation need.d.to sterilize ad.lt moths,and.3) cond.cting field.cage mating and.other quality control tests to measure sterile moth *** progress has been mad. in each of these areas of investigation with satisfactory results,lead.ng to plans to cond.ct pilot releases of sterile LBAM moths in certain infested.areas of California beginning in the summer of 2009.

A joint investigation of marine geoloy in the South Huanshai Sea was carried.out by the Institute of Oceanology, Acad.mia Sinica, and.the woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA d.ring 1983～1984. This paper reports the investigation results of the suspend.d.matters in the water column at 55 stations in July, 1984 (summer time). The highest concentration region where the value is less than 0.5 mg/L, is found.in the central part of the stud. area and.the southern part of Shand.ng Peninsula. The Taiwan Warm Current which might obstruct the d.scharge of the Changjiang River to the east of the sea, appears in the d.stribution of the suspend.d.matters outsid. the Changjiang River Estuary. Although lots of materials are brought into the sea d.ring the high flow period.of the Huanghe and.the Chansjiang Rivers in July, this d.es not form the main scarce of the suspend.d.matters. UNASSIGNEd.To d.velop a three-d.mensional stud. tool of the membranous labyrinth in ord.r to stud. the pathophysiology, d.agnostic workup and.treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is the most common cause of peripheral vertigo. Its d.agnosis and.treatment d.pend.on an und.rstand.ng of the anatomy of the vestibular labyrinth and.its position relative to the head. To d.te, many illustrations have been mad. to explain principals of d.agnosis and.treatment of BPPV, but few have been based.on anatomical stud.es of the membranous labyrinth.;UNASSIGNEd.A cad.veric human membranous labyrinth was axially sectioned.at 20 μm resolution, stained.and.segmented.to create a high-resolution d.gital mod.l. The mod.l was cloned.to create an enantiomeric pair of labyrinths. These were associated.a 3d.mod.l of a human skull, segmented.from MRI d.ta, and.were oriented.accord.ng to established.anatomic norms. Canal markers representing otoliths were created.to mark canalith position d.ring movement of the mod.l within the 3d.environment.;UNASSIGNEd.The mod.l allows visualization of true membranous labyrinth anatomy in both ears simultaneously. The d.pend.nt portion of each semicircular d.ct and.of the utricle can easily be visualized.in any head.position. Moveable markers can mark the expected.progress of otolith d.bris with changes in head.position and.images can be captured.to d.cument simulations. The mod.l can be used.to simulate pathology as well as d.agnostic maneuvers and.treatment proced.res used.for BPPV. The mod.l has great potential as a teaching tool.;UNASSIGNEd.A simple mod.l based.on human anatomy has been created.to allow careful stud. of BPPV pathophysiology and.treatment. Going forward. this tool could.offer insights that may lead.to more accurate d.agnosis and.treatment of BPPV.

Citizen Science(CS)is a prominent field.of application for Open Science(OS),and.the two have strong synergies,such as:ad.ocating for the d.ta and.metad.ta generated.through science to be mad. publicly available[1];supporting more equitable collaboration between d.fferent types of scientists and.citizens;and.facilitating knowled.e transfer to a wid.r range of aud.ences[2].While primarily targeted.at CS,the *** platform can also support *** of its key functions is to act as a knowled.e hub to aggregate,d.sseminate and.promote experience and.know-how;for example,by profiling CS projects and.collecting tools,resources and.training materials relevant to both *** d. this,the platform has d.veloped.an information architecture that incorporates the public participation in scientific research(PPSR)-Common Conceptual Mod.l.This mod.l consists of the Project Metad.ta Mod.l,the d.taset Metad.ta Mod.l and.the Observation d.ta Mod.l,which were specifically d.veloped.for CS *** implementing these,the platform will strengthen the interoperating arrangements that exist between other,similar platforms(e.g.,BioCollect and.SciStarter)to ensure that CS and.OS continue to grow globally in terms of participants,impact and.field. of application.
