Photoelectrochemical(PEC)H_(2)O_(2)production through water oxidation reaction(WOR)is a promising strategy,however,designing highly efficient and selective photoanode materials remains challenging due to competitive reaction pathways.Here,for highly enhanced PEC H_(2)O_(2)production,we present a conformal amorphous titanyl phosphate(a-TP)overlayer on nanoparticulate TiO_(2)surfaces,achieved via lysozyme-molded in-situ surface reforming.The a-TP overlayer modulates surface adsorption energies for reaction intermediates,favoring WOR for H_(2)O_(2)production over the competing O_(2)evolution reaction.Our density functional theory calculations reveal that a-TP/TiO_(2)exhibits a substantial energy uphill for the O·*formation pathway,which disfavors O_(2)evolution but promotes H_(2)O_(2)production.Additionally,the a-TP overlayer strengthens the built-in electric field,resulting in favorable kinetics.Consequently,a-TP/TiO_(2)exhibits 3.7-fold higher Faraday efficiency(FE)of 63%at 1.76 V vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)under 1 sun illumination,compared to bare TiO_(2)(17%),representing the highest FE among TiO_(2)-based WOR H_(2)O_(2)production systems.Employing the a-TP overlayer constitutes a promising strategy for controlling reaction pathways and achieving efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

A versatile use of a sulfur self-doped biochar derived from Camellia japonica(camellia)flowers is demonstrated as a multifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting and a supercapacitor.The native sulfur content in the camellia flower facilitates in situ self-doping of sulfur,which highly activates the camellia-driven biochar(SA-Came)as a multifunctional catalyst with the enhanced electron-transfer ability and long-term durability.For water splitting,an SA-Came-based electrode is highly stable and shows reaction activities in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions,with overpotentials of 154 and 362 mV at 10 mA cm^(−2),respectively.For supercapacitors,SA-Came achieves a specific capacitance of 125.42 F g^(−1)at 2 A g^(−1)and high cyclic stability in a three-electrode system in a 1 M KOH electrolyte.It demonstrated a high energy density of 34.54 Wh kg^(−1)at a power density of 1600 W kg^(−1)as a symmetric hybrid supercapacitor device with a wide working potential range of 0-1.6 V.

Restimate:Recovery Estimation Tool for Resilience Planning

The U.S.National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST)published the Community Resilience Planning Guide in 2016.The NIST Guide advocates for a participatory process for developing a performance measurement framework for the jurisdiction’s resilience against a scenario hazard.The framework centers around tables of expected and desired recovery times for selected community assets,such as electricity,water,and natural gas infrastructures.The NIST Guide does not provide a method for estimating the expected recovery times.However,building high-fidelity computer models for such estimations requires substantial resources that even larger ju-risdictions cannot cost-justify.The most promising approach to recovery time estimation is to systematically use data elicited from people to tap into the wisdom of the(knowledgeable)crowd.This paper describes a novel research-through-design project to enable the computer-supported elicitation of recovery time series data.This work is the first in the literature to examine people’s ability to estimate recovery curves and how design in-fluences such estimations.Its main contribution to resilience planning is three-fold:development of a new elicitation tool called Restimate,understanding its potential user base,and providing insights into how it can facilitate resilience planning.Restimate is the first tool to enable evidence-based expert elicitation in any community with limited resources for resilience planning.Beyond resilience planning,those who facilitate high-stakes planning activities under large uncertainties(e.g.,mission-critical system design and planning)will benefit from a similar research-through-design process.

Pregnant and postnatal women are a high-risk population particularly prone to rapid progression to sepsis with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide.Moreover,severe maternal infections can have a serious detrimental impact on neonates with almost 1 million neonatal deaths annually attributed to maternal infection or sepsis.In this review we discuss the susceptibility of pregnant women and their specific physiological and immunological adaptations that contribute to their vulnerability to sepsis,the implications for the neonate,as well as the issues with antimicrobial stewardship and the challenges this poses when attempting to reach a balance between clinical care and urgent treatment.Finally,we review advancements in the development of pregnancy-specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and how these can be used to optimize the care of pregnant women and neonates.

Production of chitosan-based composite film reinforced with lignin-rich lignocellulose nanofibers from rice husk

Lignocellulosic nanofibers(LCNFs),implying lignin-containing cellulose fibers,maintain the prop-erties of both lignin and cellulose,which are hydrophobic and hydrophilic,respectively.The pres-ence of hydrophobic lignin in LCNFs is expected to be an economical and attractive option that can improve the thermal and mechanical properties of polymers.Thus,this study was conducted to produce lignin-rich LCNFs from sugar-rich waste obtained from rice husks after acidic pretreat-ment.The LCNFs were produced from the lignin-rich solid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis,which were then incorporated as an additive into a chitosan-based film.The variations in lignin content in the range of approximately 50.6%-66.8%in differently obtained LCNFs gave significantly different optical strengths and mechanical properties.These controllable processes may allow for customized film formation.Additionally,the glucose-rich liquid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis were used as a substrate for ethanol fermentation to achieve total utilization of rice husk biomass waste.In conclusion,the lignin-rich biomass fraction holds promise as a suitable material for chitosan-LCNF film and has the potential to increase the economic feasibility of the biomaterial industry.

Simply Fine-Tuned Deep Learning-Based Classification for Breast Cancer with Mammograms

A lump growing in the breast may be referred to as a breast mass related to the tumor.However,not all tumors are cancerous or malignant.Breast masses can cause discomfort and pain,depending on the size and texture of the breast.With an appropriate diagnosis,non-cancerous breast masses can be diagnosed earlier to prevent their cultivation from being malignant.With the development of the artificial neural network,the deep discriminative model,such as a convolutional neural network,may evaluate the breast lesion to distinguish benign and malignant cancers frommammogram breast masses images.This work accomplished breastmasses classification relative to benign and malignant cancers using a digital database for screening mammography image datasets.A residual neural network 50(ResNet50)model along with an adaptive gradient algorithm,adaptive moment estimation,and stochastic gradient descent optimizers,as well as data augmentations and fine-tuning methods,were implemented.In addition,a learning rate scheduler and 5-fold cross-validation were applied with 60 training procedures to determine the best models.The results of training accuracy,p-value,test accuracy,area under the curve,sensitivity,precision,F1-score,specificity,and kappa for adaptive gradient algorithm 25%,75%,100%,and stochastic gradient descent 100%fine-tunings indicate that the classifier is feasible for categorizing breast cancer into benign and malignant from the mammographic breast masses images.

Data-driven sparse polynomial chaos expansion for models with dependent inputs

Polynomial chaos expansions(PCEs)have been used in many real-world engineering applications to quantify how the uncertainty of an output is propagated from inputs by decomposing the output in terms of polynomials of the inputs.PCEs for models with independent inputs have been extensively explored in the literature.Recently,different approaches have been proposed for models with dependent inputs to expand the use of PCEs to more real-world applications.Typical approaches include building PCEs based on the Gram–Schmidt algorithm or transforming the dependent inputs into independent inputs.However,the two approaches have their limitations regarding computational efficiency and additional assumptions about the input distributions,respectively.In this paper,we propose a data-driven approach to build sparse PCEs for models with dependent inputs without any distributional assumptions.The proposed algorithm recursively constructs orthonormal polynomials using a set of monomials based on their correlations with the output.The proposed algorithm on building sparse PCEs not only reduces the number of minimally required observations but also improves the numerical stability and computational efficiency.Four numerical examples are implemented to validate the proposed algorithm.The source code is made publicly available for reproducibility.

Impact of clay particle reattachment on suffusion of sand-clay mixtures

The detached clay particles directly filtrated through the sand-clay mixture lead to suffusion;however,if the detached clay particles are subjected to reattachment,the degree of suffusion may be less significant.This study investigates the impact of clay particle reattachment on suffusion of sand-clay mixtures through laboratory soil-column experiments.The observed breakthrough curves(BTCs)of kaolinite,illite,and montmorillonite for 5 different column lengths(3 in,6 in,9 in,12 in,and 18 in;1 in=2.54 cm)indicated that a higher breakthrough concentration was observed as the column length(L)decreased for kaolinite and illite,whereas a reverse trend was observed for montmorillonite.In addition,the increase in the fraction of filtrated clay particles(Me)with an increase in L(Me=10.42%for L=3 in and Me=3.59%for L=18 in)for the sand-illite mixture indicated that the reattachment effect became more significant as the travel length of detached clay particles increased.The observed BTCs,retention profiles after injection,and fraction of filtrated clay presented herein suggest the need to incorporate the reattachment effect when assessing the suffusion of clay-containing soils.

Will the collaboration of surgery and external radiotherapy open new avenues for hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein thrombosis?

Portal invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)occurs in 12.5%-40%of patients diagnosed with cancer and yields poor clinical outcomes.Since it is a common cause of inoperability,sorafenib was regarded as the standard treatment for HCC in the Barcelona Clinic of Liver Cancer guidelines.However,the median survival of the Asian population was only approximately 6 mo,and the tumor response rate was less than moderate(<5%).Various locoregional modalities were performed,including external beam radiotherapy(EBRT),transarterial chemoembolization,hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy,and surgery,alone or in combination.Among them,EBRT is a noninvasive method and can safely treat tumors involving the major vessels.Palliative EBRT has been commonly performed,especially in East Asian countries,where locally invasive HCC is highly prevalent.Although surgery is not commonly indicated,pioneering studies have demonstrated encouraging results in recent decades.Furthermore,the combination of neo-or adjuvant EBRT and surgery has been recently used and has significantly improved the outcomes of HCC patients,as reported in a few randomized studies.Regarding systemic modality,a combination of novel immunotherapy and vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor showed results superior to that of sorafenib as a first-line agent.Future clinical trials investigating the combined use of these novel agents,surgery,and EBRT are expected to improve the prognosis of HCC with portal invasion.
