Geotechnical investigation of low-plasticity organic soil treated with nano-calcium carbonate

Soil stabilization using nanomaterials is an emerging research area although,to date,its investigation has mostly been laboratory-based and therefore requires extensive study for transfer to practical field *** present study advocates nano-calcium carbonate(Ncc)material,a relatively unexplored nanomaterial additive,for stabilization of low-plasticity fine-grained soil having moderate organic *** plasticity index,compaction,unconfined compressive strength(UcS),compressibility and permeability characteristics of the 0.2%,0.4%,0.6%and 0.8%Ncc-treated soil,and untreated soil(as control),were determined,including investigations of the effect of up to 90-d curing on the UcS and permeability *** terms of UcS improvement,0.4%Ncc addition was identified as the optimum dosage,mobilizing a UcS at 90-d curing of almost twice that for the untreated *** treated soil,particle aggregation arising from Ncc addition initially produced an increase in the permeability coef-ficient,but its magnitude decreased for increased curing owing to calcium silicate hydrate(cSH)gel formation,although still remaining higher compared to the untreated soil for all dosages and curing periods *** index decreased for all Ncc-treated soil *** mic.o-graphs indicated the presence of gel patches along with particle aggregation.X-ray diffraction(XRD)results showed the presence of hydration products,such as *** increases in UcS are initially attributed to void filling and then because of cSH gel formation with increased curing.

This laboratory study examines the potential use of an anionic polyacrylamide(PAM)-based material as an environmentally sustainable additive for the stabilization of an expansive soil from South *** experimental program consisted of consistency limits,sediment volume,compaction and oedometer cyclic swell-shrink tests,performed using distilled water and four different PAM-to-water solutions of P_(D)=0.1 g/L,0.2 g/L,0.4 g/L and 0.6 g/L as the mixing ***,the relative swelling and shrinkage strains were found to decrease with increasing number of applied swell-shrink cycles,with an‘elastic equilibrium’condition achieved on the conclusion of four *** propensity for swelling/shrinkage potential reduction(for any given cycle)was found to be in favor of increasing the PAM dosage up to P_(D)=0.2 g/L,beyond which the excess PAM molecules self-associate as aggregates,thereby functioning as a lubricant instead of a flocculant;this critical dosage was termed‘maximum flocculation dosage’(MFD).The MFD assertion was discussed and validated using the consistency limits and sediment volume properties,both exhibiting only marginal variations beyond the identified MFD of P_(D)=0.2 g/*** accumulated axial strain progressively transitioned from‘expansive’for the unamended soil to an ideal‘neutral’state at the MFD,while higher dosages demonstrated undesirable‘contractive’states.

New neurons are integrated into the circuitry of the olfac.ory bulb throughout the lifespan in the mamma- lian brain--including in humans. These new neurons are born in the subventricular zone and subsequently mature as they are guided over long distances via the rostral migratory stream through mechanisms we are only just beginning to understand. Regeneration after brain injury is very limited, and although some neuroblasts from the rostral migratory stream will leave the path and migrate toward cortical lesion sites, this neuronal replacement is generally not sustained and therefore does not provide enough new neurons to alleviate functional deficits. Using newly discovered mic.otissue engineering techniques, we have built the first self-contained, implantable constructs that mimic the architecture and function of the rostral migratory stream. This engineered mic.otissue emulates the dense cord-like bundles of astrocytic somata and processes that are the hallmark anatomical feature of the glial tube. As such, our living mic.otissue-en- gineered rostral migratory stream can serve as an in vitro test bed for unlocking the secrets of neuroblast migration and maturation, and may potentially serve as a living transplantable construct derived from a patient＇s own cells that can redirect their own neuroblasts into lesion sites for sustained neuronal replace- ment following brain injury or neurodegenerative disease. In this paper, we summarize the development of fabrication methods for this mic.otissue-engineered rostral migratory stream and provide proof-of-princi- ple evidence that it promotes and directs migration of immature neurons.

At least 25 genes,many involved in trafficking,localisation or shaping of membrane organelles,have been identified as causative genes for the neurodegenerative disorder hereditary spastic paraplegia（HSP）.one of the most commonly mutated HSP genes,atlastin-1, encodes a dynamin-like GTPase that mediates homotypic fusion of endoplasmic reticulum（ER） ***,the molecular mechanisms of atlastin-1-related membrane fusion and axonopathy remain *** better understand its mode of action,we used affinity purification coupled with mass spectrometry to identify protein interac.ors of atlastin in *** of 72 identified proteins revealed that the atlastin interac.ome contains many proteins involved in protein processing and transport,in addition to proteins with roles in mRNA binding,metabolism and mitoc.ondrial *** highest confidence interac.or from mass spectrometry analysis, the ubiquitin-selective AAA-ATPase valosin-containing protein（VcP）,was validated as an atlastin-interacting protein,and VcP and atlastin showed overlapping subcellular ***,VcP acted as a genetic modifier of atlastin：loss of VcP partially suppressed an eye phenotype caused by atlastin overexpression,whereas overexpression of VcP enhanced this *** interactions between atlastin and VcP suggest a functional relationship between these two proteins,and point to potential shared mechanisms between HSP and other forms of neurodegeneration.
