BACKGROUND Non-secretory multiple myeloma(MM)is a rare condition that accounts for only 3%of MM cases and is defined by normal serum and urine immunofixation and a normal serum free light chain ***-secretory MM with multiple extramedullary plasmacytomas derived from endobronchial lesions is extremely rare and can be misdiagnosed as metastasis of solid *** SUMMARY A 36-year-old man presented with progressive facial swelling and nasal congestion with *** imaging studies revealed an endobronchial mass in the left bronchus and a large left maxillary mass with multiple destructive bone metastatic *** initially presented with lung cancer and multiple ***,pathologic reports showed multiple extramedullary plasmacytomas in the left maxilla and the left *** was no change in the serum and urine monoclonal protein levels,and no abnormalities were observed in laboratory examinations,including hemoglobin,calcium,and creatinine *** bone marrow was hypercellular,with 13.49%plasma *** patient was diagnosed with non-secretory MM expressed as multiple extramedullary plasmacytomas with endobronchial lesions in a rare *** therapy for symptomatic lesions with high-dose dexamethasone was started,and the size of the left maxillary sinus lesion dramatically *** the future,chemotherapy will be administered to control lesions in other *** We present a rare case of non-secretory MM with multiple extramedullary plasmacytoma with an endobronchial lesion.

This paper studies the discrete minus one norm least-squares methods for the stress formulation of pure displacement linear elasticity in two dimensions. The proposed least-squares functional is defined as the sum of the L2- and H-1-norms of the residual equations weighted appropriately. The minus one norm in the functional is replaced by the discrete minus one norm and then the discrete minus one norm least-squares methods are analyzed with various numerical results focusing on the finite element accuracy and multigrid convergence performances.

The American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition staging system for the pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: is it better than the 7th edition?

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death and has a poor prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of 9%. In 2019, 56,770 new PDAs and 45,750 deaths are projected to occur in the United States (1). Because of the dismal prognosis, it is important to predict the course of the disease precisely. The TNM staging system is a widely used not only for predicting prognosis but also for collecting and exchanging cancer information. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Cancer Staging Manual, 8th edition was introduced in October 2016 and there were many changes in the staging of PDA compared with the previous one. Of the several controversies related with the previous edition, the most important one was the reproducibility of the T-category. In the 7th edition, there were discrepancies in opinion among pathologists about pT3 (extension beyond the pancreas). Because the pancreas does not have a capsule, it is difficult to determine if there is an extra-pancreatic extension in the presence of inflammation or desmoplasia. Therefore, in the revised staging system, T-category was classified by size, regardless of the extra-pancreatic invasion: pT1, ≤2 cm in maximal diameter;pT2,>2 cm but ≤4 cm;pT3, >4 cm;pT4, locally unresectable due to involvement of major arteries (the celiac axis or the superior mesenteric artery). Another controversy in the 7th edition was that the N-category is simply divided into pN0 and pN1. It has been suggested that the N-category should be subdivided because the number of metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) affects prognosis (2).

The use of artificial nest boxes by Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) in South Korea

In this study, we examined the use of artificial nest boxes by Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) in three coniferous and mixed forests in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Six hundred and twelve boxes with different sized entry holes (ranging from 3 to 7 cm in diameter) were placed in the forests between 2004 and 2009. Pteromys volans used nine boxes in the coniferous forests and two boxes in the mixed forests. The squirrels only used boxes with entrance holes measuring 3.5, 4, and 5 cm in diameter, showing a strong and moderate preference for boxes with 5 and 4-cm holes, respectively, and a strong avoidance for boxes with 3- and 7-cm holes. Therefore, we suggest placing artificial nest boxes with entrance holes 5 cm in diameter to encourage breeding activity. Most nests made in the artificial boxes were composed of fibrous materials from woody vines. We recommend placing artificial nest boxes with holes of 5-cm diameter in coniferous forests, which support dense populations of P. volans, to survey whether this approach would positively affect the breeding habits and population maintenance of this species.

Preparation of human decellularized peripheral nerve allograft using amphoteric detergent and nuclease

Animal studies have shown that amphoteric detergent and nuclease(DNase I and ribonuclease A) is the most reliable decellularization method of the peripheral nerve. However, the optimal combination of chemical reagents for decellularization of human nerve allograft needs further investigation. To find the optimal protocol to remove the immunogenic cellular components of the nerve tissue and preserve the basal lamina and extracellular matrix and whether the optimal protocol can be applied to larger-diameter human peripheral nerves, in this study, we decellularized the median and sural nerves from the cadavers with two different methods: nonionic and anionic detergents(Triton X-100 and sodium deoxycholate) and amphoteric detergent and nuclease(3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate(CHAPS), deoxyribonuclease I, and ribonuclease A). All cellular components were successfully removed from the median and sural nerves by amphoteric detergent and nuclease. Not all cellular components were removed from the median nerve by nonionic and anionic detergent. Both median and sural nerves treated with amphoteric detergent and nuclease maintained a completely intact extracellular matrix. Treatment with nonionic and anionic detergent decreased collagen content in both median and sural nerves, while the amphoteric detergent and nuclease treatment did not reduce collagen content. In addition, a contact cytotoxicity assay revealed that the nerves decellularized by amphoteric detergent and nuclease was biocompatible. Strength failure testing demonstrated that the biomechanical properties of nerves decellularized with amphoteric detergent and nuclease were comparable to those of fresh controls. Decellularization with amphoteric detergent and nuclease better remove cellular components and better preserve extracellular matrix than decellularization with nonionic and anionic detergents, even in large-diameter human peripheral nerves. In this study,water-dispersible graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))photocatalysts were successively prepared through the chemically oxidative etching of bulk g-C_(3)N_(4) that was polymerized thermally in different calcination atmospheres such as air,CO_(2),and N_(2).The different calcination atmospheres directly influenced the physicochemical and optical properties of both bulk and water-dispersible g-C_(3)N_(4),changing the photocatalytic degradation behavior of methylene blue(MB)and tetracycline hydrochloride(TCHCl)for water-dispersible g-C_(3)N_(4).The bubble-burst process in the thermal polymerization of thiourea produced defective edges containing C=O groups that preferred substituting the C-NHx groups over bulk g-C_(3)N_(4).In the oxygen-free N_(2) atmosphere among the different calcination atmospheres,more C=O functional groups were generated on the defective edges of bulk g-C_(3)N_(4),resulting in the highest N vacancy of the tri-s-triazine *** the successive chemical oxidation,S-or O-containing functional groups were introduced onto water-dispersible g-C_(3)N_(4).The water-dispersible g-C_(3)N_(4) photocatalyst from the oxygen-free N_(2) atmosphere(NTw)contained the most O-and S-functional groups on the g-C_(3)N_(4) ***,NTw exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity in the MB and TC-HCl photodegradation because of its slowest recombination process,which was ascribed to the unique surface properties of NTw such as abundant functional groups on the defective edges and N-deficient property.

BACKGROUND Complex regional pain syndrome(CRPS)is characterized by pain as well as sensory,motor,and sudomotor ***,it is classified into two types CRPS-I and *** is no single diagnostic test or treatment approach for CRPS,and a multidisciplinary approach is gaining attention to improve patients’symptoms and their quality of *** SUMMARY A 35-year-old woman with an unremarkable medical history sought treatment for CRPS at a hospital of Korean *** her first visit,she was wheelchairbound due to severe pain in her left lower *** had edema and discoloration of the left *** was treated with a combination of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)approaches,including acupuncture,moxibustion,pharmacopuncture,and herbal decoction,for approximately 20 *** foot and ankle outcome score(FAOS)and visual analog scale(VAS)score for pain were evaluated,along with general signs and *** symptoms,signs,FAOS,and VAS scores improved after treatment,with a significant 7-degree decrease in the VAS score and a 62-point increase in the FAOS ***,the foot swelling and discoloration gradually *** the phone follow-up,5 mo after the last visit,additional improvements in outcomes were *** Combined TCM treatment may be a reasonable and safe option for alleviating symptoms and improving function in patients with CRPS.

Changes of the Flowering Time of Trees in Spring by Climate Change in Seoul, South Korea

Flowering onset has attracted much attention in ecological research as an important indicator of climate ***,warmer temperatures advance flowering *** effect of climate warming on flowering onset is more pronounced in spring because the difference between atmospheric and water temperatures creates more rapid convection than in other *** analyzed the correlation between 73 species of spring woody plants in Hongneung Arboretum in Seoul,South Korea and the spring minimum temperature and average precipitation over the past 50 years(1968–2018).The spring minimum temperature and average precipitation have increased over the past 50 years,resulting in the advance of the first flowing date(FFD)in all 73 species by 8.5 days on average.A comparison of FFD changes over time by dividing the survey period into three time periods confirmed the advance of the FFD in 50 species(68%of investigated species)by 11.1 days on average in both Period 2(1999–2008)and Period 3(2009–2018)relative to Period 1(1968–1975).Additionally,a delay of the FFD by 3.2 days on average was observed in 8 *** FFD of Lonicera chrysantha(Caprifoliaceae)advanced by over 40 days and was highly correlated with the increased spring minimum *** of the sensitivity of plant responses to climate change revealed that a temperature rise of 1℃ was associated with an FFD advance of 1.2 days in all *** species that was most sensitive to temperature change was Spiraea pubescens ***(Rosaceae),whose FFD advanced by 4.7 days per 1℃ temperature *** increase in precipitation by 1 mm was found to result in a 0.1-day advance of the FFD of all *** tomentosa(Rosa-ceae)was the most sensitive species,that advanced by 2.6 days for each 1 mm increase in ***,for all species,the FFD was more sensitive to the change in temperature than in *** that the current greenhouse gas(GHGs)emission levels or atmospheric CO_(2) conc
