Corrosion characteristics of single-phase Mg-3Zn alloy thin film for biodegradable electronics

Biodegradable metals as electrodes, interconnectors, and device conductors are essential components in the emergence of transient electronics, either for passive implants or active electronic devices, especially in the fields of biomedical electronics. Magnesium and its alloys are strong candidates for biodegradable and implantable conducting materials because of their high conductivity and biocompatibility, in addition to their well-understood dissolution behavior. One critical drawback of Mg and its alloys is their considerably high dissolution rates originating from their low anodic potential, which disturbs the compatibility to biomedical applications. Herein, we introduce a single-phase thin film of a Mg-Zn binary alloy formed by sputtering, which enhances the corrosion resistance of the device electrode, and verify its applicability in biodegradable electronics. The formation of a homogeneous solid solution of single-phase Mg-3Zn was confirmed through X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the dissolution behavior and chemistry was also investigated in various biological fluids by considering the effect of different ion species. Micro-tensile tests showed that the Mg-3Zn alloy electrode exhibited an enhanced yield strain and elongation in relation to a pure Mg electrode. Cell viability test revealed the high biocompatibility rate of the Mg-3Zn binary alloy thin film. Finally, the fabrication of a wireless heater demonstrated the integrability of biodegradable electrodes and highlighted the ability to prolong the lifecycle of thermotherapy-relevant electronics by enhancing the dissolution resistance of the Mg alloy.

Lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs)have emerged as promising power sources for high-performance devices such as electric ***,the poor energy density of LSBs owing to polysulfide shuttling and passivation has limited their further market *** mitigate this challenge,two-dimensional(2D)siloxene(2DSi),a Si-based analog of graphene,is utilized as an additive for sulfur *** 2DSi is fabricated on a large scale by simple solvent extraction of calcium disilicide to form a thin-layered structure of Si planes functionalized with vertically aligned hydroxyl groups in the *** stoichiometric reaction of 2DSi with polysulfides generates a thiosulfate redox mediator,secures the intercalation pathway,and reveals Lewis acidic sites within the siloxene *** 2DSi utilizes the corresponding in-situ-formed electrocatalyst,the 2D confinement effect of the layered structure,and the surface affinity based on Lewis acid-base interaction to improve the energy density of 2DSi-based LSB *** with the commercial carbon-based current collector,2DSi-based LSB cells achieve a volumetric energy density of 612 Wh Lcell^(−1) at 1 mA cm^(−2) with minor degradation of 0.17%per cycle,which rivals those of state-of-the-art *** study presents a method for the industrial production of high-energy-dense LSBs.

Background The benefit of statin use after acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction （STEMI） has been well established, however, the influence of the timing of statin administration has not been elucidated. The objective of this study focused on early clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI）. Methods This analysis of the Korea Working Group on Myocardial Infarction registry （KorMI） study included 3,584 STEMI patients （mean age, 63 ±13 years;male, 2,684, 74.9%） undergoing PCI from January 2008 to june 2009. Rates of major adverse cardiac events （MACE：all-cause death, recurrent MI, and target lesion revascularization） were compared among patients grouped according to statin therapy timing：I, both during and after hospitalization （n=2,653, 74%）;II, only during hospita-lization （n=309, 8.6%）;III, only after discharge （n=157, 4.4%）;and IV, no statin therapy （n=465, 13%）. Mean follow-up duration was 234 ± 113 days. Results Multivariate factors of statin use during hospitalization included prior statin use, multiple diseased vessels, final thrombolysis in myocardial infarction flow grade III, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level. At 6-month follow-up, groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ had the highest MACE rates （2.3%, 3.9%, 5.1%, and 4.9%for groups I-IV, respectively, P=0.004）. After adjusting for confounders, groups Ⅱ-Ⅳ had a higher MACE risk than group Ⅰ [hazard ratio （HR）：3.20, 95%confidence interval （95%CI）：1.31-7.86, P=0.011;HR：3.84, 95%CI：1.47-10.02, P=0.006;and HR：3.17, 95%CI：1.59-6.40, P=0.001;respectively]. Conclusions This study, based on the national registry database, shows early and continuous statin therapy improvs early outcomes of STEMI patients after PCI in real-world clinical prac-tice.

Mechanical alloying of platinum with 5% ZrO_2 nanoparticles for glass making tools

Synthesis and characterization of mechanically alloyed Pt-5%ZrO2(volume fraction) for structural components in the glass industry were described. Zirconia(ZrO2) nanoparticles(<100 nm) were produced by the electrical explosion of zirconium(Zr) wires, and blended with platinum(Pt) powders(<44 ?m) for 2-72 h in ambient atmosphere. The Pt particle size followed the typical decreasing trend of the normal ball milling process up to 48 h, but particle agglomeration was observed at 72 h. The grain size evolution was similar to that of the particle size, dropping down to around 50 nm at 48 h. The root mean square strain of the Pt crystallites showed the opposite behavior, maximizing at 48 h with a subsequent relaxation process. For the 48 h ball milled powders, spark plasma sintering was carried out to form a bulk disk. The measured mass loss of the sintered bulk sample shows a decent thermal stability despite its relatively low density.

To investigate the characteristic radiologic findings of cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) which can be differentiated from other similar bowel disease and to assess their clinical behavior. METHODSTwenty pathologically and clinically confirmed CMUSE patients (males:females = 8:12; mean age: 40.4 years) between March 2002 and August 2015 from seven academic centers in South Korea were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated small bowel series (SBS; n = 25), computed tomography (CT) enterography (n = 21), magnetic resonance (MR) enterography (n = 2), and abdominopelvic CT (n = 18) images, focusing on enteric and perienteric manifestations. Any change in radiologic features during follow-up period was recorded. We evaluated clinical data including presenting symptoms, laboratory finding and presence of relapse from electronic medical records. Histopathologic findings were also evaluated. RESULTSThe main symptoms were abdominal pain (n = 12) and anemia (n = 10). All patients showed small bowel strictures (n = 52, mean: 2.6 per patient) on initial CT/MR, located in the ileum (n = 47) or jejunum (n = 5). Strictures showed short-length (mean: 10.44 mm) and circumferential bowel wall thickening (mean: 5.56 mm) with layered enhancement (n = 48) that were also noted on initial SBS (n = 36) with shallow ulcers (n = 10). Some ulcerative lesions or wall thickening progressed into strictures on follow-up SBS/CT, and some strictures revealed recurrent ulceration on follow-up SBS. There were no penetrating disease features like fistula or abscess and no gastrointestinal tract involvement except the small bowel. Nine patients experienced disease recurrence (median relapse-free period: 32 mo) even post-operatively. Histopathologic features of surgically resected specimens were characterized as multiple superficial ulcerations confined to mucosa or submucosa and multiple strictures. Interface engineering of an electrospun nanofiber-based composite cathode for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells

Sluggish oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)kinetics are a major obstacle to developing intermediate-temperature solid-oxide fuel cells(IT-SOFCs).In particular,engineering the anion defect concentration at an interface between the cathode and electrolyte is important for facilitating ORR kinetics and hence improving the electrochemical *** developed the yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)nanofiber(NF)-based composite cathode,where the oxygen vacancy concentration is controlled by varying the dopant cation(Y2O3)ratio in the YSZ *** composite cathode with the optimized oxygen vacancy concentration exhibits maximum power densities of 2.66 and 1.51 W cm^(−2)at 700 and 600℃,respectively,with excellent thermal stability at 700℃ over 500 h under 1.0 A cm^(−2).Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and distribution of relaxation time analysis revealed that the high oxygen vacancy concentration in the NF-based scaffold facilitates the charge transfer and incorporation reaction occurred at the interfaces between the cathode and *** results demonstrate the high feasibility and potential of interface engineering for achieving IT-SOFCs with higher performance and stability.

Improvement of resolution in 2-D gel analysis by simple pre-treatment of human urine with EDTA

Regardless of thermodynamic stability, less complex proteome than plasma, convenient and noninvasive sampling of urine, reproducibility and comparability of the data among laboratories are challenges for the urine proteome analysis. Pretreatment of urine with 10 mM EDTA in conjunction with desalting methods to remove interfering molecules significantly improved the presentation of urine proteome on 2-D gels. Statistical analysis of the average ratio of the spot numbers on 2-D gels between EDTA-treated and non-treated samples were 1.35 ± 0.167, 1.26 ± 0.091, and 1.24 ± 0.095 for dialysis, ultrafiltration, and desalting column, respectively, with the p-value of 5.85 × 10–6 for the overall comparison. This result came from the fact that EDTA-treated samples showed better resolutions with less streaks and clearer spots on 2-D gels than the control samples. The results suggest that a simple and non-fractionating EDTA-treatment can be employed to the procedures for the high resolution 2-D gel analysis and other urinary proteomic analysis.

Evidence from a familial case suggests maternal inheritance of primary biliary cholangitis

Primary biliary cholangitis(PBC) is an idiopathic autoimmune liver disease characterized by chronic cholestasis and destruction of the intrahepatic bile ducts. Similar to other autoimmune diseases, the pathogenesis of PBC is considered to be a complex etiologic phenomenon involving the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Although a number of common variants associated with PBC have been reported from genome-wide association studies, a precise genetic mechanism underlying PBC has yet to be identified. Here, we describe a family with four sisters who were diagnosed with PBC. After the diagnosis of the index patient who was in an advanced stage of PBC, one sister presented with acute hepatitis, and two sisters were subsequently diagnosed with PBC. Notably, one half-sister with a different mother exhibited no evidence of PBC following clinical investigation. Our report suggests the possibility of a maternal inheritance of PBC susceptibility. Moreover, judging from the highpenetrance of the disease observed in this family, we inferred that a pathogenic genetic variant might be the cause of PBC development. We describe a family that exhibited diverse clinical presentations of PBC that included asymptomatic stages with mildly increased liver enzyme levels and symptomatic stages with acute hepatitis or advanced liver fibrosis. Additional studies are needed to investigate the role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of this rare autoimmune disease.

Mg and its alloys are the lightest structural metals available and are extremely attractive for applications as lightweight components, particularly in the automobile, electronic, and aerospace industries. The global market for wrought Mg alloys has steadily expanded over the past decade. And numerous studies have been carried out to meet this increasing demand of high-performance Mg alloys. However, Mg extrusion alloys have had a very limited usage so far. To overcome existing industrial challenges, one desirable approach is the development of low-cost rare earth(RE) free Mg extrusion alloys with superior mechanical properties. This review will introduce the recent research highlights in the extrusion of Mg alloys, specifi cally focusing on low-cost RE-free Mg alloy. The results from both the literature and our previous study are summarized and critically reviewed. Several aspects of RE-free Mg extrusion alloys are described in detail:(1) novel alloying designs including Mg–Al-, Mg–Zn-, Mg–Ca-, Mg–Sn-, and Mg–Bi-based alloys,(2) advanced extrusion techniques, and(3) extrusion-related severe plastic deformation(SPD) processing. Accordingly, considering the large gap in mechanical properties between the current RE-free Mg alloys and high-performance aluminum alloys, new alloy design, processing route control, and recommendations for future research on RE-free Mg extrusion alloys are also proposed. We hope this review will not only off er insightful information regarding the extrusion of RE-free Mg alloys but also inspire the development of new Mg extrusion technologies.
