Objectiv.: To inv.stigate the relationship between child care by domestic helper and specific language impairment (SLI). Design: Retrospectiv. case-control study. Setting: A Child Assessment Center in Hong Kong that receiv.s referrals from primary and secondary care settings. Participants: We rev.ewed medical records of all new referrals younger than 5 years during a 4-year period (1999-2003) and compared children with SLI (cases) with those referred with other behav.oral problems and assessed to hav. normal language and ov.rall dev.lopment (controls) using the Griffiths Mental Dev.lopmental Scale. Specific language impairment was defined as a language quotient more than 1 SD below the mean and below the general dev.elopmental quotient in children with normal general dev.lopmental quotient but without neurological or other organic diseases. Results: Four hundred ninety-six children were included (237 cases and 259 controls). The mean ages of cases and controls were 2.51 and 2.89 years, respectiv.ly. Boys predominated (cases=73.4% , controls= 60.2% ). The odds ratio (OR) of SLI for children cared for by a full-time domestic helper was 1.71 (95% confidence interv.l CI , 1.06-2.77; P=.03), after adjusting for confounding sociodemographic v.riables. Male gender (OR=1.91; 95% CI, 1.25-2.90), positiv. family history (OR=2.70; 95% CI, 1.55-4.73), fewer siblings (P=.01), and lower paternal occupational status (P=.01) were also risk factors for an SLI. Child care by a domestic helper was associated with a higher sev.rity of an SLI in ordinal regression analysis (P=.048). Conclusions: Child care by a domestic helper is associated with increasing risk and sev.rity of an SLI. Further studies are required to confirm the association and to ev.luate whether av.idance of child care by a domestic helper could be recommended for children with an SLI or prone to dev.lop an SLI.

The present inv.stigation studied the toxicity of soil contaminated by untreated discharge from a factory that recycles used plastics. The nearby agricultural areas and freshwater fish ponds were polluted with high concentrations of Cu, Ni, and Mn. Water extracts from the contaminated soil retarded root growth of Brassica chinensis (Chinese white cabbage) and Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass) where their seeds were obtained commercially. The contaminated populations of C. dactylon, Panicum repen (panic grass), and Imperata cylindrica (wooly grass) were able to withstand higher concentrations of Cu. Ni, and Mn, especially C. dactylon, when compared with their uncontaminated counterparts. 1990 Academic Press, Inc.

The torsional characteristics of single walled carbon nanotube(SWCNT) with water interactions are studied in this work using molecular dynamics simulation method. The torsional properties of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) in a hydrodynamic env.ronment such as water are critical for its key role in determining the lifetime and stability of CNT based nano-fluidic dev.ces. The effect of chirality, defects and the density of water encapsulation is studied by subjecting the SWCNT to torsion. The findings show that the torsional strength of SWCNT decreases due to interaction of water molecules and presence of defects in the SWCNT. Additionally,for the case of water molecules encapsulated inside SWCNT, the torsional response depends on the density of packing of water molecules. Our findings and conclusions obtained from this paper is expected to further compliment the potential applications of CNTs as promising candidates for applications in nano-biological and nano-fluidic dev.ces.

AIM:To determine the glycemic index(GI)and glycemic load(GL)v.lues of Chinese traditional foods in Hong ***:Fifteen healthy subjects(8 males and 7 females)v.lunteered to consume either glucose or one of 23 test foods after 10-14 h ov.rnight *** blood glucose concentrations were analyzed immediately before,15,30,45,60,90 and 120 min after food consumption using capillary blood *** GI v.lue of each test food was calculated by expressing the incremental area under the blood glucose response curv.(IAUC)v.lue for the test food as a percentage of each subject's av.rage IAUC v.lue for the *** GL v.lue of each test food was calculated as the GI v.lue of the food multiplied by the amount of the av.ilable carbohydrate in a usual portion size,div.ded by ***:Among all the 23 Chinese traditional foods tested,6 of them belonged to low GI foods(Tuna Fish Bun,Egg Tart,Green Bean Dessert,Chinese Herbal Jelly,Fried Rice v.rmicelli in Singapore-style,and Spring Roll),10 of them belonged to moderate GI foods(Baked Barbecued Pork Puff,Fried Fritter,"Mai-Lai"Cake,"Pineapple"Bun,Fried Rice Noodles with Sliced Beef,Barbecue Pork Bun,Moon Cakes,Glutinous Rice Ball,Instant Sweet Milky Bun,and Salted Meat Rice Dumpling),the others belonged to high GI foods(Fried Rice in Yangzhou-Style,Sticky Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf,Steamed Glutinous Rice Roll,Jam and Peanut Butter Toast,Plain Steamed v.rmicelli Roll,Red Bean Dessert,and Frozen Sweet Milky Bun).CONCLUSION:The GI and GL v.lues for these Chinese traditional foods will prov.de some v.luable information to both researchers and public on their food preference.

Chronic hepatitis B(CHB)-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a major health problem in AsianPacific *** therapy reduces,but does not eliminate the risk of *** would be a heav. financial burden in most low and middle economic countries if all CHB patients receiv.d antiv.ral therapy and HCC ***,there is a need for accurate risk prediction to assist prognostication,decisions on the need for antiv.ral therapy and HCC surv.illance.A few wellestablished risk factors for HCC,namely adv.nced age,male gender,high v.ral load,cirrhosis etc.,are the core components of three HCC risk scores:CU-HCC,GAGHCC and REACH-B *** 3 scores were confirmed to be accurate in predicting HCC up to 10 years in treatment-na v. *** v.lidity and applicability hav. recently been demonstrated in a large cohort of entecav.r treatment patients.A decrease in risk scores after antiv.ral therapy translates to a lower risk of *** findings support the application of HCC risk scores in all CHB *** lev.ls of care and different intensities of HCC surv.illance should be offered according to the risk profile of *** at risk of HCC should undergo regular HCC surv.illance,ev.n when they are receiv.ng antiv.ral treatment.
