Cardiac mucosa at the gastroesophageal junction:An Eastern perspective

AIM:To investigate the nature and origin of cardiac mucosa(CM).METHODS:Biopsy samples from sixty-one individuals were included in this study. The specimens were taken "at","just below",or "just above" the gastroesophageal junction,including the histologic squamocolumnar junction. Clinical data were obtained by reviewing electronic medical records for each patient. Patients with a history of stomach adenoma or carcinoma and esophageal carcinoma were excluded,and cases that were endoscopically suspicious of Barrett's esophagus or a polyp were also ruled out. Histologic and endoscopic reviews were performed blinded to the patient's clinical data. Histologic evaluation wasconducted by two pathologists,and endoscopic review was performed by a endoscopist with wide experience in the field. Histologically,the columnar epithelium of squamocolumnar junction,presence and severity of acute and chronic inflammation,atrophy,intestinal metaplasia,and presence of carditis were evaluated. Endoscopically,reflux esophagitis was evaluated by Los Angeles(LA) classification,hiatal hernias were classified by Hill grade,and gastroesophageal flap valves were assessed. RESULTS:Fifty-nine of the 61(96.7%) patients were Korean; 65.6%(40/61) of the patients underwent endoscopy according to the schedule of the National Health Insurance Program as a screening inspection. Of these,only 20.0%(8/40) of cases had reflux s y m p t o m s. C M w a s p r e s e n t i n 4 1 / 6 1( 6 7. 2 %) individuals,and its presence was associated with older age compared to oxyntocardiac mucosa/oxyntic mucosa(60.59 ± 2.02 years vs 51.55 ± 3.35 years; P = 0.018). The presence of CM was associated with endoscopic diagnosis of esophagitis according to the LA classification(P = 0.022). CM was associated with mononuclear cell infiltration and neutrophilic infiltration,which were statistically significant(P = 0.001,and P = 0.004,respectively). Invasive species have potentially devastating effects on ecological communi- ties and ecosystems. To understand the invasion process of exotic forest pests in South Korea, we reviewed four major species of exotic forest pests： the pine needle gall midge （Thecodiplosis japonensis）, pine wilt disease caused by the pine wood nematode （Bur- saphelenchus xylophilus）, the fall webworm （Hyphantria cunea） and the black pine bast scale （Matsucoccus thunbergianae）. We consider their biology, ecology, invasion history, dispersal patterns and related traits, and management as exotic species. Among these species, the dispersal process of fall webworm was linear, showing a constant range expan- sion as a function of time, whereas the other three species showed biphasic patterns, rapidly increasing dispersal speed after slow dispersal at the early invasion stage. Moreover, human activities accelerated their expansion, suggesting that prevention of the artificial movement of damaged trees would be useful to slow expansion of exotic species. We believe that this information would be useful to establish management strategies for invasion species.

A major issue in radar quantitative precipitation estimation is the contamination of radar echoes by non-meteorological targets such as ground clutter,chaff,clear air echoes *** this study,a fuzzy logic algorithm for the identification of non-meteorological echoes is developed using optimized membership functions and weights for the dual-polarization radar located at Mount *** selected precipitation and non-meteorological events,the characteristics of the precipitation and non-meteorological echo are derived by the probability density functions of five fuzzy parameters as functions of reflectivity *** membership functions and weights are then determined by these density ***,the nonmeteorological echoes are identified by combining the membership functions and *** performance is qualitatively evaluated by long-term rain *** detection accuracy of the fuzzy logic algorithm is calculated using the probability of detection（POD）,false alarm rate（FAR）,and clutter–signal ratio（CSR）.In addition,the issues in using filtered dual-polarization data are alleviated.

Anode materials for rechargeable electric car batteries are obtained from Li-metal owing to their extremely high specific capacity and low redox ***,safety concerns related to dendrite formation on the anode surface caused by the uneven distribution of Li-ions during the discharge process interfere with the use of Li-metal in industrial *** this study,methyl vinyl sulfone(MVS),a sulfone-based functional electrolyte additive,is used in an additive engineering strategy to control Lielectrolyte interactions and address the aforementioned *** dendrite growth may be restricted,and transition metal degradation on the surface of the cathode can be reduced by the MVS-derived functional electrolyte additive interfacial *** electrochemical performance of an ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate(EC/DMC)+1 wt% MVS Li-metal anode of a Li||Li symmetric cell exhibits remarkable cycle stability,maintaining a low overvoltage for over 750 h at 1 mA cm^(-2),and capacity of 1 mA h cm^(-2).Additionally,LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)(NCM811) full cells with the MVS additive exhibit enhanced electrochemical stability for 250 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g^(-1).This study provides an innovative approach for stabilizing the metal-electrolyte interfacial layer that may be used for practical applications in metal-based rechargeable batteries.

Homogeneous co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment were used to prepare nano- and highly dispersed Ni O/YSZ(yttria-stabilized zirconia) composite powders. Composite powders of size less than 100 nm were successfully prepared. This process did not require separate sintering of the YSZ and Ni O to be used as the raw materials for solid oxide fuel cells. The performance of a cell fabricated using the new powders(*** density ~0.87 W/cm^2) was higher than that of a cell fabricated using conventional powders(max. power density ~0.73 W/cm^2). Co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment proved to be very effective processes for reducing cell production costs as well as improving cell performance.
