Experimental and computational study of smoke dynamics from multiple fire sources inside a large-volume building

Fire in large-volume buildings poses separate and distinct challenges from compartmented *** particular,the risk it poses on life safety is mostly due to the smoke it produces,its effects on the evacuation process,and how it can affect the firefighters when they approach the building to fight the fire and rescue the *** is why smoke control in large-volume enclosures is of utter importance for life safety,property protection and business *** research presents an experimental and numerical study of the smoke dynamics from four fire sources(combined heat release rate of 5.2 MW)with different ignition times and under transient ventilation conditions,inside a 20 m high cubic *** measurements in the plume and close to the walls have been recorded using 59 *** data was used in the determination of the smoke layer interface height,with the least-square and the N-Percent *** show that significantly worse conditions are induced by multiple sources than those in a single fire of equal *** results have been obtained using the computational fluid dynamics code FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator,v6.7.1).The comparison shows that in the far field the temperature predictions are accurate inside the smoke layer(10 m and 15 m)with discrepancies lower than 10%,whereas higher significant discrepancies were observed at the smoke layer interface,i.e.5 m high,with discrepancies up to 20%.Furthermore,a grid analysis has been performed showing that grid resolutions,D*/δ,based on the global HRR of the fire might be sufficient to predict the fire induced conditions far from the *** analysis confirmed the applicability of FDS to the assessment of the smoke dynamics under complex fire conditions away from ***,the present work shows the importance of considering fires with multiple sources due to the faster smoke production compared with single fires.

Comparison of the standard Euler-Euler and hybrid Euler-Lagrange approaches for modeling particle transport in a pilot-scale circulating fluidized bed

Particle transport phenomena in small-scale circulating fiuidized beds （CFB） can be simulated using the Euler-Euler, discrete element method, and Euler-Lagrange approaches. In this work, a hybrid Euler-Lagrange model known as the dense discrete phase model （DDPM）, which has common roots with the multiphase particle-in-cell model, was applied in simulating particle transport within a mid-sized experimental CFB facility. Implementation of the DDPM into the commercial ANSYS Fluent CFD package is relatively young in comparison with the granular Eulerian model. For that reason, validation of the DDPM approach against experimental data is still required and is addressed in this paper. Additional difficulties encountered in modeling fluidization processes are connected with long calculation times. To reduce times, the complete boiler models are simplified to include just the combustion chamber. Such simplifications introduce errors in the predicted solid distribution in the boiler. To investigate the conse- quences of model reduction, simulations were made using the simplified and complete pilot geometries and compared with experimental data. All simulations were performed using the ANSYSFLUENT 14.0 package. A set of user defined functions were used in the hybrid DDPM and Euler-Euler approaches to recirculate solid particles.

Numerical approach for modeling particle transport phenomena in a closed loop of a circulating fluidized bed

Numerical modeling of a large scale circulating fiuidized bed （CFB） imposes many complexities and difficulties. Presence of a dense solid phase, a variety of spatial and time scales as well as complex model geometries requires advanced numerical techniques. Moreover, the appropriate selection of a numerical model capable of solving granular flow, and geometrical model simplification can have a huge impact on the predicted flow field within the CFB boiler. In order to reduce the cost of the numerical simulations, the complex CFB boiler geometry is reduced to that of the combustion chamber. However, a question arises as to bow much one can simplify the geometrical model without losing accuracy of numerical simulations. To accurately predict the gas-solid and solid-solid mixing processes within subsequent sections of the CFB boiler （combustion chamber, solid separator, drain section）, a complete 3D geometrical model should be used. Nevertheless, because of the presence of various spatial and temporal scales within subsequent boiler sections, the complete model of the 3D CFB boiler is practically unrealizable in numerical simulations. To resolve the aforementioned problems, this paper describes a new approach that can be applied for complete boiler modeling. The proposed approach enables complex particle transport and gas flow problems within each of the boiler sections to be accurately resolved, It has been achieved by dividing the CFB boiler geometry into several submodels, where different numerical approaches can be used to resolve gas-solid transport. The interactions between computational domains were taken into account by connecting the inlets/outlets of each section using a set of user-defined functions implemented into the solution procedure. The proposed approach ensures stable and accurate solution within the separated boiler zones.

Concentration-Dependent Solar Thermochemical CO_(2)/H_(2)O Splitting Performance by Vanadia-Ceria Multiphase Metal Oxide Systems

The effects of V and Ce concentrations(each varying in the 0-100%range)in vanadia-ceria multiphase systems are investigated for synthesis gas production via thermochemical redox cycles of CO_(2) and H_(2)O splitting coupled to methane partial oxidation *** oxidation of prepared oxygen carriers is performed by separate and sequential CO_(2) and H_(2)O splitting *** and chemical analyses of the mixed-metal oxides revealed important information about the Ce and V interactions affecting their crystal phases and redox *** CeO_(2) and pure V_(2)O_(5) are found to offer the lowest and highest oxygen exchange capacities and syngas production performance,*** mixed-oxide systems provide a balanced performance:their oxygen exchange capacity is up to 5 times higher than that of pure CeO_(2) while decreasing the extent of methane *** addition of 25%V to CeO_(2) results in an optimum mixture of CeO_(2) and CeVO4 for enhanced CO_(2) and H_(2)O *** higher V concentrations,cyclic carbide formation and oxidation result in a syngas yield higher than that for pure CeO_(2).

Incidence of human papilloma virus in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in patients from the Lublin region

AIM:To assess the prevalence of human papilloma virus(HPV) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) in the south-eastern region of ***:The study population consisted of 56 ESCC patients and 35 *** controls were patients referred to our department due to other nonesophageal and non-oncological disorders with no gross or microscopic esophageal pathology as confirmed by endoscopy and *** the ESCC patients,samples were taken from normal mucosa(56 mucosa samples) and from the tumor(56 tumor samples).Tissue samples from the controls were taken from normal mucosa of the middle esophagus(35 control samples).Quantitative determination of DNA was carried out using a spectrophotometric *** DNA was isolated using the QIAamp DNA Midi *** infection was identified following PCR amplification of the HPV gene sequence,using primers MY09 and MY11 complementary to the genome sequence of at least 33 types of *** sequencing results were computationally analyzed using the basic local alignment search tool ***:In tumor samples,HPV DNA was identified in 28 of 56 patients(50%).High risk HPV phenotypes(16 or/and 18) were found in 5 of 56 patients(8.9%),low risk in 19 of 56 patients(33.9%) and other types of HPV(37,81,97,CP6108) in 4 of 56 patients(7.1%).In mucosa samples,HPV DNA was isolated in 21 of 56 patients(37.5%).High risk HPV DNA was confirmed in 3 of 56 patients(5.3%),low risk HPV DNA in 12 of 56 patients(21.4%),and other types of HPV in 6 of 56 patients(10.7%).In control samples,HPV DNA was identified in 4 of 35 patients(11.4%) with no high risk *** occurrence of HPV in ESCC patients was significantly higher than in the controls [28 of 56(50%) vs 4 of 35(11.4%),P < 0.001].In esophageal cancer patients,both in tumor and mucosa samples,the predominant HPV phenotypes were low risk HPV,isolated 4 times more frequently than high risk phenotypes [19 of 56(33.9%) vs 5 of 56(8.9%),P < 0.001].A higher prevalence of HPV

Collective migrations in an epithelial-cancerous cell monolayer

Collective cell migration is extensively observed in embryo development and cancer *** these processes,the interactions between cells with distinct identities and fates are of importance for boundary formation and host defense against *** this paper,we explore the collective dynamics of a two-dimensional cell mixing monolayer consisting of non-tumorigenic mammary epithelial cells and breast cancer *** show that the epithelial-cancerous cell mixing system displays unique sorting *** epithelial cells aggregate to form scattered clusters,which perform random motion with simultaneous translation and rotation,strikingly distinct from the classical persistent random walk of individual migratory *** motility of cancer cells is markedly promoted by the epithelial clusters,exhibiting remarkable contact enhancement of locomotion.A discrete model based on the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts contact mechanics is proposed to identify the influence of intercellular interactions,active migration forces and cell-substrate friction forces on the collective cell *** findings could advance our understanding of many biological processes,such as cancer metastasis and tissue morphogenesis.

The application of metal nanoparticles as an efficient drug delivery system is one of the directions of cancer therapy ***,this strategy requires precise information about how the drug interacts with the applied *** this study,atomic force microscopy combined with infrared spectroscopy(AFM-IR)was used for the first time to investigate the erlotinib adsorption structure on two different types of 15 nm metal nanoparticle mono-layers,namely,silver nanoparticle(AgNP)and gold nanoparticle(AuNP)*** the metal nanoparticles are loosely bound samples,only the tapping AFM-IR mode is suitable for the collection of IR maps and spectra for such a *** obtained results indicated the relevance of the AFM-IR technique for characterizing drug interactions with a metal mono-layer *** investigated drug interacts with the AgNPs mainly through phenyl rings and methoxy moieties,while quinazoline,amino,and ethoxy moieties appear to be farther from the *** the AuNPs,the interaction occurs through both the phenyl ring and the quinazoline ***,the aliphatic groups of erlotinib directly participate in this *** novelty of the present work is also related to the use of the tapping AFM-IR mode to study metal NP mono-layers with a drug adsorbed on *** collected IR maps for the most enhanced erlotinib bands show specific areas with very high signal *** connection between these areas and the"hot spots"typical for the surface plasmon resonance phenomenon of metals is considered.
