we constructed a physical map of O. sativa ssp. japonica cv. ZH11 and compared it and its random sample sequences with the Nipponbare RefSeq derived from the same subspecies. This comparison showed that the two japonica genomes were highly syntenic but revealed substantial differences in terms of structural variations, rates of substitutions and indels, and transposable element content. For example, contractions/expansions as large as 450 kb and repeat sequences that were present in high copy numbers only in ZH11 were detected. In tri-alignment regions using the indica variety 93-11 sequence as an outgroup, we found that：（1） the substitution rates of the two japonica-indica inter- subspecies comparison combinations were close but almost a magnitude higher than the substitution rate between the japonica rice varieties ZH11 and Nipponbare; （2） of the substitutions found between ZH11 and Nipponbare, 47.2% occurred in ZH11 and 52.6% in Nipponbare; （3） of the indels found between ZH11 and Nipponbare, the indels that occurred in ZH11 were 15.8 times of those in Nipponbare. Of the indels that occurred in ZH11, 75.67% were insertions and 24.33% deletions. Of the indels that occurred in Nipponbare, 48.23% were insertions and 51.77% were deletions. The ZH11 com- parative map covered four Nipponbare physical gaps, detected assembly errors in the Nipponbare sequence, and was integrated with the FSTs of a large ZH11 T-DNA insertion mutant library. Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment works （SCISTw and STSTw） in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at （1） determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, （2） comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and （3） characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants （STPs）. Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes （from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ns/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTw and SCISTw, respectively）. It was noted that STSTw was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTw with average total removal effidency 94.4% ± 4.12% us. 79.2% ± 7.48% （p 〈 0.05）. The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples （dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTw and STSTw, respectively） than liquid samples （final efffluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTw and SCISTw, respectively）. Despite the impressive capability of STSTw and SCISTw in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs （1.85 and 39.3 ks/year, respectively for the two STPs） being discharged into Hone Kon coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.

The scattering of Love waves by an interface crack between apiezoelectric layers and an elas- tic substrate is investigated byusing the integral transform and singular integral equationtechniques. The dy- namic stress intensity factors of the left andthe right crack tips are determined. It is found from numericalcalculation that the dynamic response of the system dependssignificantly on the crack configuration, the ma- terial combinationand the propagating direction of the incident wave. It is expectedthat specifying an appro- priate material combination may retard thegrowth of the crack for a certain crack configuration.

Nitrous oxide （N2O） emission has been reported to be enhanced during denitrification when internally-stored compounds are used as carbon sources. However, negligible N2O emissions have been detected in the few studies where polyhydroxyalkanoates （PHA） were specifically used. This study investigated and compared the potential enhancement of N2O production, based on utilization of an internally-stored polymer and external carbon （acetate） by a denitrifying phosphorus removal culture. Results indicated that at relatively low chemical oxygen demand-to-nitrogen （COD/N） ratios, more nitrite was reduced to N2O in the presence of an external carbon source as compared to an internal carbon source （PHA）. At relatively higher COD/N ratios, similar N2O reduction rates were obtained in all cases regardless of the type of carbon source available. N2O reduction rates were, however, generally higher in the presence of an internal carbon source. Results from the study imply that when the presence of an external carbon source is not sufficient to support denitrification, it is likely competitively utilized by different metabolic pathways of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms （DPAOs） and other ordinary denitfifiers. This study also reveals that the consumption of PHA is potentially the rate-limiting step for N2O reduction during denitrification.

Enhanced photocatalytic activity and mechanism of CeO_(2) hollow spheres for tetracycline degradation

Photocatalytic disinfection has been well-studied for water treatment. However, the post-separation of photocatalyst remains a major challenge for practical application. This study developed a novel method for photocatalytic disinfection, which used a "partition system" to retain the photocatalyst. Cadmium indium sulfate （CdIn 2 S 4 ） coupled with regenerated cellulose membrane gave the best performance. 4 log-reduction of a Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, and 5 log-reduction of a Gram-positive bacterium, Microbacterium Barkeri, （initial cell density 2×10 5 cells/mL） were achieved within 4 and 6 h, respectively. Scavenger study revealed that H 2 O 2 is the major reactive species for bacterial inactivation in the "partition system". The study provides an alternative cost-effective method for the application of photocatalysis in water disinfection.

Recently, researchers have focused on designing and fabricating highly efficient catalysts for photocatalytic organic pollutant removal. Herein, CeO_(2) hollow spheres were prepared through a simple template method followed by calcination at different temperatures for the tetracycline(TC) degradation under simulated solar light illumination. with a calcination temperature ranging from400 to 800 ℃, the as-prepared CeO_(2) hollow structure annealed at 600 ℃(C_(600)) exhibited the best degradation performance with a degradation rate constant of0.066 min-1, which was about six and five times higher than those of the uncalcined sample(C_(0)) and the sample calcined at 800 ℃(C_(800)), respectively. Moreover, sample C_(600)was also superior to the CeO_(2) solid particle photocatalyst. The characterisation results showed that the improved photocatalytic performance was mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of large specific surface areas, high crystallisation and excellent light scattering ability. Furthermore, the results of active species trapping experiments demonstrated that the superoxide anion(·O_(2)^(-)) radical and hole(h^(+)) played dominant roles in TC degradation. Subsequently, the possible TC degradation pathways and photocatalytic mechanism of CeO_(2) hollow spheres were proposed on the basis of high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, main active species and band edge positions of CeO_(2). The results of this study provide a basis for designing and exploring hollow structure catalysts for energy conversion and environmental remediation.
